@lporter229 Great racing, congratulations!!

Just a short run for me tonight. I didn't feel like running at all - after a sunny spring weekend, the weather has decided to go back to winter. Which would be fine, but I took the bike to work, and on the way home there was an icy headwind that left me frozen and exhausted at the same time.
Took me an hour to warm up and gather my motivation to go out again. But I'm taking care of a friend's cat while he is out of town, he lives too close to justify taking the car (a bit less than 2km one way), and there was no way I was riding my bike in that icy wind again. So running it was...
There and back, 4km in total. Training plan said 4.8km for today, but training plans are more like suggestions anyway8 -

@lporter229 congrats on your races. Hope your hamstring feels much better. Dry needling is interesting - do you also get electrical stimulation with that?
@7lenny7 thanks - I had remembered you running in KC before and thought that kind of thing might be something you'd do. Sounds like you have some big combos in mind. Also, cool about running all the streets of your town. I remember you or @rusgolden maybe shared the website/app where you can track this before - what is that?
@elise4270 how are you recovering with your enhanced leg?

Another treadmill run before circuit training. I swear I'm getting slower and slower.
Legs and core today featuring box jumps again. Friday I was feeling so good about it and today the same height was messing with my mind. I nailed my shin pretty good on one attempt - even though it's a soft box it left a nice mark. All right, box. Next time.4 -

Hmmm.... I’m not sure if I shared why. tl;dr My femur was derped up and anteverted (37degrees) -rotated forwards. This causes a person to naturally turn the toes inward to align the femur/ acetabulum (hip socket). All this malalignment causes stress on soft tissues, my case the IT band and bursa (sx #2), the hip labrum and knee. Fair chance that without this correction, I’d need a hip replacement and/or a knee replacement at some point. And that won’t get me to Kona. Hehe. Nah, my running days may truly be over, but I won’t trip over my own feet any more, er as often, hopefully . So that’s why I tell you kids with hip pain “see a professional “. You never know what you are up against until you visit someone with imaging.
ETA
@katharmonic Recovery is brutal. Surgeon today said don’t panic the pain returns like it was earlier. A good day is 5/10 with narcotics (not very good ones mind you). First 10 days I was fine only when the narcotics knocked me out. Today I made it 12 hours,1834 steps (crutches) at Baylor and a 5 hour car ride before I was in pissed off pain and gave into 1 norco (5), 3 Advil, OJ and a nap.
@_nikkiwolf_ think I’d rather be Jessica Jones, but I’ll take wolverine
@shanaber probably. But there’s the full body scan so... I don’t think it’ll be a problem.
If you notice the bottom screw is bent. It’s meant to be that way. The rod is designed to have a set screw that allows the surgeon to have constant pressure on the two pieces of bone. It’s pulling the bottom of the rod upwards. Ya.. prob why my knee huuurts. No worries though. It’s getting better and I’m more mobile.

so I'm around 90 posts behind.
Thought of you all this morning as I fell hard on the concrete today, skinning my knee haha. I was running with a new person, and was pointing out an uneven bit of footpath - I'm used to the path so I know it, she has never run it before. But I missed the hollow right before it, caught my foot, and went down in a heap! Talk about embarrassing. got up kept going. just a minor skinning of my knee and bruised ego.
just a gentle 3k today after a lovely 8k yesterday.10 -

From what I understand, only the screws will come out. I’m kinda concerned about the bottom bent one, but have 100% faith and trust that my surgeon knows what’s he’s doing. I am lucky there! I have coxa profunda and protrusio acetabuli on the left, sure I see protrusio acetabuli on the right... I try to read these images and my mri’s but I tell ya, I’m rarely right! Hahaha!

The bent screw will come out fine, provided the sawbones has a big enough screwdriver!
Seriously, hope your recovery goes well.1 -

interesting! Cant see any protusio acetabuli on this pic, but since its not a dedicated pelvis image its hard to say for sure. Some good news, I cant see major evidence of arthritis yet! lol2 -

My c25k buddy has been sticking with it so far! We are currently midway through week 2 and she’s already noticing that it’s slowly getting easier so yay! I’m not running as long/far since I’m doing this with her, but I think it’s worth it since I get to see my friend and have a running buddy! We’ve also been doing some strength training at the gym after our runs which I’ve been seriously slacking on so it’s great!

lporter229 wrote: »I am not sure what it is about running Boston that seems to put everyone on the injury edge (based on conversations with running friends who are all in the same boat). I am quite sure it's probably mental more than physical, and the timing of the race definitely contributes to that. I keep reminding myself that the last time I ran it I took almost a month off in Feb-March and I maxed out at 16 miles for my long run. My hamstrings were in much worse shape and I still managed a pretty good finish. I really have nothing to prove here, as I am not shooting for a PR, but I really would like to feel like a gave it a solid effort. I think I am ready. Sorry for the blabber...I just needed to get that all out.
I trained almost to injury for my first Boston. In hindsight, the reason I didn't get injured was my coach telling me firmly to start taper early when I was really beat up and discouraged. And then I managed to injure myself by running too much, too soon, too hard after Boston that year.
I did better with my second Boston, but managed to catch the cold from hell a week out and have it peak the day before. Other than being sick, I was in pretty good shape.
The third year, 2018, was a race of faith. I *started* injured, and the entire training cycle was a process of rehab and base building. Then I had a really good race in the nor'easter, and an excellent recovery.
I think the thing that puts people on the injury edge is training right up to the limit. That's risky, and sometimes the risk bites you. Back off 5% to 10%, and it's much less risky; but for a lot of people, backing off 5% to 10% would mean not qualifying. So there's the dilemma.
I don't know how much attrition is due to running injury as opposed to other Life Happens stuff, but the 3 years I've looked only about 90% of the people who registered made it to the start line at Hopkinton. Then around 96% of the ones who started, finished. BAA will talk about the 96% finish rate, but is silent about the 90% rate of getting from September registration to the April starting line.8 -

@PastorVincent As far as i know i can and will run again. The doc was, of course, very cautious about making any guarantee. I'm prepared to just enjoy running for the sake of trying- should be less painful, and who knows.... I might be good at it then. If not, i gotta couple of bicycles and a gym membership with a pool.6

Well that sounds promising at least!0 -
All the talk about when to register for races inspired me to bite the bullet and sign up for the Vancouver HM, so now that’s firmly in the plans.. and I’ve been wanting to run the Lake Union 10K for three years now, and it’s happening on my birthday, so I’ll probably sign up for that one before the price goes up at the end of the month. Our dog woke me up at 3 am yesterday and I couldn’t get right back to sleep, so started perusing the race calendars.
Otherwise, nice 4.5 mi run that got pushed a little later than I wanted tonight because of work busyness and bad prep (forgot my shirt this time!). But once I got my act together I could run in short sleeves, and it was a beautiful big moon shining on the lake, so all was well.
And I’m liking the Garmin a lot! Only wishing I could figure out why it’s giving me negative calorie adjustments for 20K plus steps..

Thank you! I have run 54% of the streets in my suburb/village. It's not that big, so I could probably easily finish this, maybe a summer project. My next highest place was 27% done and I was surprised because it is somewhere I have only run once - a very small town that I did a half marathon in.3 -

Nominal March mileage goal: 200 miles
Real Goals: Train well toward Boston. Cut back before St. Patrick’s Day weekend, run the 8K hard, use the half as a training race. Remain uninjured, even if it means cutting back on planned mileage.
Today's notes – Went to club practice this evening, ran my warmup, listened to the pre-workout coach's talk. Didn't know what I wanted for speed work, so I talked to Coach. Went over what I'd done last week. He already knew about my race results this weekend. He told me to just run some easy miles and a few strides. So that's what I did.
The training plan had 10 x Yasso 800s for today. I had run 10 Yasso's a couple weeks ago on the track, knowing that I wouldn't want to run them on Cobb's Hill. And with the races last weekend, it wouldn't be very smart to work that hard today anyway. Mindlessly following the canned plan would carry too much risk of injury.
This is the very boring, unsexy part of training that doesn't get talked about much: Recovery. After working hard, you take it easy. Taking it easy doesn't mean bed rest, or even not running; but it does mean running that isn't fast or particularly noteworthy as an achievement. The purpose is to maintain the body's ability to run, while allowing the body to recover from running hard and having very low risk of injury. (Not zero; I could still trip on the sidewalk and fall down.)
27 days till Boston. I feel like I'm in good shape. I don't want to mess that up.
Eh. Didn't click "post," so this is getting posted the morning after I wrote it.

heh. Goes in spirts. Some days there are only like 50 new posts... other days 100s. I think it comes down to who mentions bunless hotdogs with ketchup first.7 -
@Elise4270 -Wow, woman! You have been through a lot. Your positive attitude and unwillingness to give in have been such an inspiration to so many of us here. I hope you already know that though.
@katharmonic -Yesterday was the first time I had the electrostimulation. It was, er, interesting. My hamstrings were much sorer yesterday than I remembered them being after my previous treatments. It was interesting to note that my PT was able to look at the needles after the pulses had been going for a few minutes and was able to tell me exactly where my tightest spots were by the way they responded in loosening up. And he was right. He said that I should expect some bruising on my left leg because it was the tightest and I definitely felt that. Will this help? Who knows. Even if it's only placebo effect, I guess that's still something...
@MobyCarp -Your 2018 "race of faith" sounds a lot like where I was in 2017. Only difference is that I had no delusions of running a strong race. My only goal was to finish under 4 hours and that had less to do with caring about my finishing time and more to do with the fact that I knew if I was running longer than 4 hours there would be some serious pain involved. This year I do have a bit of a race plan, mostly because I would like to make amends with the training mistakes I made last time. I definitely feel like I am in that "unsexy recovery" period right now. If I do any speed work from here on out it will be minimal. Like you, the goal is to avoid injury and go into the race as fresh as possible. It's amazing how much wiser you become once you have a few marathons (and training mistakes) in your rear view mirror. Good luck at Boston. Maybe I will get to see you there this time!3 -
Yikes… to say that was a slow run would be an understatement! I think a snail overtook me! This cough is really taking it out of me…

So myself and a friend have decided to join a 1000km in 2019 challenge now! So I guess given there's 10 months left I'll have to average 100km a month for the rest of the year!
Have decided that I will start training towards a marathon in October! They release more spots in July so I'm thinking I'll just start working towards it and see where I'm at by the end of June. If all is going well I'll sign up!
So, long story short, I'm in for 100km
Planned races

@katharmonic the site is citystrides.com
You have to allow it to sync to your Strava account and I think perhaps it allows you to use map my run and maybe one other as well.
Unfortunately, the data for my region is full of non-streets:
For my village, it shows that I am supposedly missing 73. I went through the list of missing streets - more than 60 of those are not streets at all, but schools, churches, hotels, shops, rivers, the country border, private residences, ... I went through the list and flagged them all for "deletion". Same for the neighbouring village - the site claims it has 266 streets. I estimate that 80% of those are incorrect. More than a hundred of those streets are actually building numbers on a research campus, and another 50 or so should not belong to this village at all, as they are in different villages or even on the other side of the Swiss-French border. Again I flagged all the obvious non-streets. And then I read the help forum and saw that the poor admin has to look at all flagged streets manually, there's no automated system.
On the other hand, the village where my parents live seems has no data at all, so there I'm at 0 of 0 streets. Which maybe means I'm not missing any, so i completed it?
Too bad, it sounded like a cool idea, but I guess it only works well if the data for your city is correct...1 -

@_nikkiwolf_ yes, the site isn't perfect. When I decide to start working on a town the first thing I do is browse through the street listing for that town to flag the non-streets and private streets. Then I mark them as manually completed so they don't show up as missing.
The issue, as I understand it, is that this site pulls in the data from Open Street Map and not everything is tagged correctly there. It's a work in progress and he CityStrides owner is working on a way to delete the non-streets with community efforts.
If nothing else, it gives you a combined look at where you've run, which is kind of interesting.2
