April Weekly Miles
GOAL: 140 miles
04/06 -
04/13 -
04/20 -
04/27 -
04/30 -
TOTAL: 0.00 miles
April has 1 less weekend than March did, so even though I was well over my goal last month, I'm going keep it at 140... also, will have a taper week next week and a recovery week the following week, so I'm sure my mileage will be down a bit. I was late posting my March summary which included my 10K race last Sat., so including that below.March Weekly Miles
GOAL: 140 miles
03/02 - 13.25
03/09 - 29.91
03/16 - 40.53
03/23 - 38.83
03/30 - 25.67
03/31 - 03.96
TOTAL: 152.15 miles
I exceeded my goal and I exceeded my expectations for the 10K race on Sat. My previous 10K PR was 52:01 and I felt I could slide in under 50 minutes. I knew the race ended on an incline the last mile, so I went out a bit faster the first couple miles to build a cushion, but then pretty much kept up that pace throughout and ended up with a new PR of 48:06, so almost 4 minutes off the previous PR. This was good enough for 1st in age group out of 6 and 16th overall out of 184.

I got burned so many times as a kid... Still do as an adult, because they seem to like growing near geocaches
But from what I heard they aren't as bad as poison ivy, so I guess I shouldn't complain about them too much ^^
@_nikkiwolf_ Oh we definitely have nettles here. It's abundant but easy to spot. If you get the nettle sting, there's usually a plant nearby with a juicy stalk which will neutralize the sting. That plant is jewelweed and it has a long history of being used as a medicinal plant. Break off a bit, smash the stem to get the juice out and rub it on the sting. It works for other itchy/stingy plants as well.
Fun fact, nettles are edible. We used to pick the young leaves, saute them and add them to scrambled eggs.
For me, nettles are worse than poison ivy because I'm not allergic to poison ivy. But nettles are just a minor, short-lived irritation.
@workaholic_nurse it's great to see you posting again!
@Orphia don't be such a stranger! Though as one who usually disappears from this group in the summer, I get it.
My Achilles is getting better. What was an occasional sharp pain changed to a dull pain, and now it's just infrequently that I feel it. I've gone from not being able to do one eccentric calf drop without pain to doing 12 before I feel some minor pain. I've been working my core & glutes instead at night.
I was on the cusp of deciding to go for a test run last night but decided not to. I may go for 2 or 3 miles tonight to test it out. I really hope I can get decent runs in this weekend but my goal of back to back 20's is out, and certainly not on hilly terrain.
My dilemma is figuring out how I get vertical training in before my race, when hills are what will stress it the most. I've already decided that I will use trekking poles during the race and will also use them for any hilly trail running between now and then.8 -
@amymoreorless for me, finishing the race is the achievement and what I'm proud of, not the medal. I'd rather get a shirt, mug or something of use. So, for medal display, I don't really do anything. I have them all hanging in our bedroom from a hook thing that is there to hold up the curtain thing that isn't really a curtain (my wife could tell you what it is...I have no idea...it kind of looks like a curtain pulled to the side but you can't move it to cover anything so it's pretty much useless).
For bibs I used to be good about writing the details of the race on the back but don't even do that any more. I toss them in envelope. There are many without anything identifying which race it was for so I won't remember what those are for. I should probably toss them. The only bibs I'd really care about keeping are the milestone races...first at each distance, all marathons and longer distance races, and maybe PR races.
Most glasses and mugs I get I bring to work and put on my dusty shelf. I hate to get rid of them but there are only two use regularly. One for coffee, one for tea.

@rusgolden huge congrats on your 10K PR and 1st place AG! 48:06 is an impressive time!4

*makes mental note to send @Elise4270 some nettles in a jar...*
@7lenny7 - we use dock leaves for that same purpose of jewelweed. It usually grows nearby, probably just a placebo but we do it anyway.4 -
girlinahat wrote: »@elise4270 - no, not burrs - we have stuff like that, like goosegrass you throw at your friends so they walk around with it stuck to them, or little seedheads that animals get stuck.
no, nettles - (latin name urtica dioica) are about a metre high, some with little white flowers, usually in the hedgerows and rough ground. Touch them even lightly and you'll know about it - you'll get stung and come out with tiny little white welts. the sting lasts for ages. That's why most people wear long leggings to run off road.
nettle tea is very good for you - high in vitamin C I hear, and nettle soup is nice, but first catch your nettle.
I use my hubby's work gloves, dry them out and make tea3 -
we also have nettles and i found a few in the PNW hiking.
i react poorly to them.1 -
Date Miles Notes
4/1 ----5.5 ---Hoped to do 6 but needed to get to dinner plans w/my friend
4/2
1.0 ---test run of the new kicks
6.5/50
Went out for a super short test run of my new kicks last night. I always get anxious when I need to try a newer version of my go-to shoes. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop (pun FULLY intended) one of these days, and have a version that is totally awful. I've been running in Brooks Glycerins since I first started running, about 7ish years ago. My last pair of the 14's are reaching the end of their lifespan, and due to having stockpiled a few pairs + breaks due to injuries, the oldest models I can currently find in my size for some kind of a discount are the 16's. So far, they seemed great last night on my one mile test run!
Question of the month - I have always intended to do something with my medals and bibs but have never actually gotten around to it. I have done some labeling of races/times on the backs of bibs, but not all. My medals are all currently hanging off of a random hook, except for a couple I have hanging on my cubicle wall at work. Someday!!! I will get to it!!! Lol
- I've never encountered nettles but we do tend to get a bit of poison ivy around where I live. Either I've done a really good job avoiding it or I'm immune to it bc I have never gotten it. *knocks on wood*
- Another point in favor of this guy I've gone on a few dates with: he knows I like cats/have 2 of them and he just sent me a funny/cute cat vid. 10 brownie points to him12 -
@rusgolden fantastic performance!! You gotta be stoked about that!1
-
@KatieJane83 I’m running in those Glycerins now. Actually have been since they came out. I do well in Glycerins that I’m scared to try anything different, though I tried the Ghost sneakers because they are a bit cheaper. The Glycerins feel more comfortable to me.2

Same! I have a really hard time finding shoes that don't cause numbness in my feet. I've tried to find other options so I can have a varied rotation but it's a challenge. Only other shoes I've had success with are Altra Lone Peak trail shoes. I keep meaning to try their road shoes.0 -
April goal: 85 miles
4/2: 5.07 miles
4/3: 4.63 miles
4/4: 5.05 miles
14.75/85 miles completed
This morning's run was really nice. I ran 5.05 miles. It was a bit humid, but low 60's and not windy for a change so overall it was pretty nice. I just wore shorts and a t-shirt which is my favorite type of running wear. The new shoes have been really nice too. I also did a Zombie's run supply run and outran the zombies on all of the chases. (I am really ready for the new season to come out.) I think the zombie chases are kind of like fartleks so they are kind of like speedwork. I should probably do more speedwork, but I don't do it often.
This weekend and next week will be pretty busy. Both of my kids will be here. We are having a going away party for my son. And next week we will be taking him to the airport because he is moving to Japan for at least a year. I am really excited for him, but also kind of anxious about the whole thing. It will be good to have both of the kids together though. Plus my son is bringing his corgi to stay with us while he is gone so I am kind of looking forward to that. I will probably get way behind on this thread though so good luck to anyone who is racing this weekend!

@rusgolden huge congrats on your 10K PR and 1st place AG! 48:06 is an impressive time!
Yes indeed! What he said!!
@shanaber and @martaindale - Thank you for your supportive comments.
I ran just over 2.5 miles this morning with the dogs. Nice and easy, nevermind the 3 cats and the bunny that made things interesting. I'm getting better at keeping my heart rate out of zone 4, and might even be getting a teeny bit faster. Or it's just that the roads are not slushy and icy.
After this morning's run, I'm feeling a lot better about my race on Sunday. Though my real goal is to finish without injury, I've set myself a few different time goals: one that's probably out of reach, one that should be totally doable but still pushing it, and a PR (which only requires finishing since this is my first official 10k, though I hope to be faster than my practice 10k last month).9 -
When we moved the plan was to hang up my medals in the basement gym and use the bibs to paper the walls. That’s still the plan, we just haven’t gotten to it yet. Or unpacking the spare bedrooms. Or the garage. However, we did make a display in the living room that I’m pretty happy with. The shirt is from my first race ever, the bib from my first half, and the most recent race swag is in front.

@girlinahat like @mbaker566 mentioned we do have nettles in the PNW, and we have earthquakes too! Not so many poisonous snakes in western Washington though, so at least there’s that.
I’m so inspired by the question of them month! My medals are just hanging up randomly on hooks—including one at my work, because I did a run they have every year on campus, and the medals came in late, and so I guess they sent all the ones they could through campus mail. I kind of like it there, though—reminds me that I have a life beyond work when I’m feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities.3 -
I made it on my first work trip run this month! (of two cross country trips) The place I’m staying in center city Philly is right next to a running store, so I got in yesterday in time to check in with them for recommendations. Luckily they told me about a nice trail not too far from my place along the Schuylkill, so that’s where I got my 5 miles this morning, and the jet lag wasn’t even too bad! (East coast mornings tend to be tough for me the day after flying in.) Here’s a photo from my quasi Rocky moment:
April goal: 70 mi
4/2 5 mi
4/4 5 mi
April total: 10 mi
2019 Races:
3/16 Kirkland Shamrock Run 5K
4/13 Mud & Chocolate 4.5 mi trail run
5/6 Vancouver BMO Half Marathon
5/18 Your Canyon for a Day 35 mi Bike Tour, Yakima
8/11 Lake Union 10K?11 -

No nettles, but we do have poison ivy everywhere, especially in the woods on trails. In fact it’s growing under the holly bushes next to my front door and trying to creep up the door frame at this very moment, I keep ripping it out but need to get out there with some weed killer. Poison ivy comes in both shrub and vine form, and likes to spring up anywhere there is partial shade. How badly someone is affected by it differs by individual, but you can’t just sit back and relax if you are “immune” because repeated exposure causes sensitivity to it. My husband gets nothing, I get a few small itchy bumps, and my high school boyfriend would get a horrible weeping rash that took the skin off half his body and lasted a month. If someone accidentally throws some on a burn pile and stands downwind, it can severely injure and even kill people who inhale it.
We also have poison sumac and poison oak.
My personal phobia, though, is brown recluses, which my mom has in abundance throughout the house and barn. Recluses don’t intentionally seek out people, but do like to hide in things such as old clothes boxes and bedcovers, and can cause massive necrotic wounds. The initial bite is often painless and unnoticed, which means that during the summer I am convinced that every unexplained bump or welt is about to turn into a brown recluse bite.6 -

Truth. That's why I avoid it, even though I'm not affected by it at the moment. One time my friend and I found ourselves in a patch of it while wearing shorts. He got a hell of a case of poison ivy bumps and itching, but I got nothing.
I guy I worked with put a bunch on a burn pile and ended up in the ER. It affected him for weeks.
My personal phobia is deer ticks and Lyme disease. It's the only thing in Minnesota I can think of that I'm concerned about.9 -

This plan could backfire on you! You'll have them everywhere and won't like us anymore.
Medals: I bought a reasonably-priced rack online (via the Polish site allegro.pl). It's got a ton of room for new medals, and came with rubber bands to adjust the length of each ribbon (which I haven't used yet). I liked the city-countryside-mountain design.10 -

Nah. I’ll always love the mother land. 100% European I am. 72.1% English. Oi! Y’all me mates!
Love the rack, I’ll have to check it out. Ta. (Oh im feelin’ a Dr Who binge).

Here in North Georgia/S Carolina we have the gamut from poisonous snakes:water moccasins and several different kinds of rattles snakes, to spiders:brown recluses and black widows, along with wild hogs, poison ivy/oak and sumac, several different kinds of flying stinging insects:multiple types of wasps, hornets and yellow jackets. Not to mention rabid animals are on the uptick with summer coming around.6

My personal phobia is deer ticks and Lyme disease. It's the only thing in Minnesota I can think of that I'm concerned about.
In Central Texas the only things we have to really worry about are:- Diamond Back Rattlesnakes
- Coral snakes
- Water Moccasin snakes
- Western Cottonmouth snakes
- Copperhead snakes
- mountain lions
- scorpions
- Texas red-headed centipedes
- Black Widow spiders
- Brown Recluse spiders
- poison oak
- poison sumac
- poison ivy
- mosquitoes that carry Zika / Dengue Fever / West Nile Virus
- the Lonestar Tick (whose bite weirdly can cause a life-threatening allergy to red meat https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/alpha-gal-syndrome/symptoms-causes/syc-20428608)
- A Kissing Bug can give you Chagas Disease
I am sure I am forgetting a few things....10 -
3/1 = rest/dying from weekend overload day
3/2 = 3 struggle/sore recovery miles
3/3 = rest day
