Their sting feels kind of like an instant sunburn, with an itchy rash as a bonus.
I got burned so many times as a kid... Still do as an adult, because they seem to like growing near geocaches
But from what I heard they aren't as bad as poison ivy, so I guess I shouldn't complain about them too much ^^
No nettles, but we do have poison ivy everywhere, especially in the woods on trails. In fact it’s growing under the holly bushes next to my front door and trying to creep up the door frame at this very moment, I keep ripping it out but need to get out there with some weed killer. Poison ivy comes in both shrub and vine form, and likes to spring up anywhere there is partial shade. How badly someone is affected by it differs by individual, but you can’t just sit back and relax if you are “immune” because repeated exposure causes sensitivity to it. My husband gets nothing, I get a few small itchy bumps, and my high school boyfriend would get a horrible weeping rash that took the skin off half his body and lasted a month. If someone accidentally throws some on a burn pile and stands downwind, it can severely injure and even kill people who inhale it.
We also have poison sumac and poison oak.
My personal phobia, though, is brown recluses, which my mom has in abundance throughout the house and barn. Recluses don’t intentionally seek out people, but do like to hide in things such as old clothes boxes and bedcovers, and can cause massive necrotic wounds. The initial bite is often painless and unnoticed, which means that during the summer I am convinced that every unexplained bump or welt is about to turn into a brown recluse bite.
Truth. That's why I avoid it, even though I'm not affected by it at the moment. One time my friend and I found ourselves in a patch of it while wearing shorts. He got a hell of a case of poison ivy bumps and itching, but I got nothing.
I guy I worked with put a bunch on a burn pile and ended up in the ER. It affected him for weeks.
My personal phobia is deer ticks and Lyme disease. It's the only thing in Minnesota I can think of that I'm concerned about.9 -

This plan could backfire on you! You'll have them everywhere and won't like us anymore.
Medals: I bought a reasonably-priced rack online (via the Polish site allegro.pl). It's got a ton of room for new medals, and came with rubber bands to adjust the length of each ribbon (which I haven't used yet). I liked the city-countryside-mountain design.10 -

Here in North Georgia/S Carolina we have the gamut from poisonous snakes:water moccasins and several different kinds of rattles snakes, to spiders:brown recluses and black widows, along with wild hogs, poison ivy/oak and sumac, several different kinds of flying stinging insects:multiple types of wasps, hornets and yellow jackets. Not to mention rabid animals are on the uptick with summer coming around.6

In Central Texas the only things we have to really worry about are:- Diamond Back Rattlesnakes
- Coral snakes
- Water Moccasin snakes
- Western Cottonmouth snakes
- Copperhead snakes
- mountain lions
- scorpions
- Texas red-headed centipedes
- Black Widow spiders
- Brown Recluse spiders
- poison oak
- poison sumac
- poison ivy
- mosquitoes that carry Zika / Dengue Fever / West Nile Virus
- the Lonestar Tick (whose bite weirdly can cause a life-threatening allergy to red meat https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/alpha-gal-syndrome/symptoms-causes/syc-20428608)
- A Kissing Bug can give you Chagas Disease
I am sure I am forgetting a few things....10 -

Running-and-Who-related: I got this coffee travel mug for Christmas and love it:5 -
If I were to display my medals, I think I'd go the DIY route. Get some hardwood with some really nice grain, sand it, route the edges to give it a nice profile, stain it, then mount a decent tie rack to it.
Is anyone biting their tongue and trying hard not to say, "nice rack!" or is it just the immature teenage boy in me?18 -

I really want both of those. I’m saving the link. Maybe after my first comeback race I’ll treat myself to that hanger. If I can find the mug, I’ll grab it! I may snatch some thing that dh might like. His b day is Saturday.
ETA ordered. It’ll be a late gift but a surprise since he’ll think I got nothing.
Yes @7lenny7 only thread on the internet where “nice rack” is a well received compliment.4 -
I'm at 32 miles so far, aiming for 200.8

90, that's 90 posts! I've skimmed, hi @orphia and yeah I can see why you've taken a step back!
I turned off my alarm last night thinking I needed a lay in. Nope body woke at 520am so I went out and did 4k. Helps I had a great sleep though with some disturbing dreams.
The dreams were because I got an interview for that Job!! Applications for the position don't close till the 21st, and they've already booked me for an int3. Good sign right??
This means that I tell my boss on Tuesday. So dreams last night were of my boss getting really angry with me. Not likely to happen, I have such an amazing kind boss who's more likely to tear up at me leaving than get angry but obviously my subconscious was somewhat worried.
I'm so excited but also really sad. I love my job, and have an amazing workplace who really look after me. However it's time to move on, mostly for the kids. So I'm really excited, and guilty for being excited, and really sad to be leaving. No wonder I slept well, all these emotions are exhausting.
*note: no i dont have the job yet, and I don't count myself as having it till the official offer is signed. All signs look positive though.
Also have to tell my boss for 2 reasons, he's one of my references, and I want them to have plenty of time to put the advertising etc together, so if I do get the job they are ready to go. It will be hard for them to find a replacement.9 -
Reprise of swag display. This arrived in the mail today. It will go on my coffee table and my coffee mug will sit on it from time to time:
Actually, getting it was just a little depressing. I'd feel better about it if I were actually, like, *running* this week.15 -
girlinahat wrote: »@elise4270 - no, not burrs - we have stuff like that, like goosegrass you throw at your friends so they walk around with it stuck to them, or little seedheads that animals get stuck.
no, nettles - (latin name urtica dioica) are about a metre high, some with little white flowers, usually in the hedgerows and rough ground. Touch them even lightly and you'll know about it - you'll get stung and come out with tiny little white welts. the sting lasts for ages. That's why most people wear long leggings to run off road.
nettle tea is very good for you - high in vitamin C I hear, and nettle soup is nice, but first catch your nettle.
Yes. We have them around here - in East Tennessee. We call them stinging nettles. I don't think they are plentiful, but I have gotten into them before.0
