I don't know exactly what to say to encourage everyone here, but I am so glad so many of you are making an AF choice. I pray that this choice strengthens you both physically and mentally.15

Awesome job everyone! We have a golf tournament later this week and not drinking. Typically in tournaments they have drink stations set up. Sparkling water for me.
Wishing everyone well! 👍❤️💃10 -

I have a serious fantasy of being a Jeopardy contestant. I'm going to take the online test in 4 minutes. I've taken it 3 times before . . . always after having a few drinks. Maybe this time will be the charm!9

Dang! I just finished it and can't blame alcohol this year.7

Over 5 months alcohol free!! Loving life, working out, meditating, writing poetry, working hard, no friends! Lol I’m a tad bit antisocial you could say, in that I am a natural loner. I just had to finally allow myself to be comfortable with it. Family is close and I am plenty personable to where I get my “social fill” with new people and friendly acquaintances. I’ve gotten back to my spirituality and allowed my magic to flow. Good to see you all here, fighting the good fight. How great to have support in doing what’s best!13

@donimfp Just watch the Cheers episode when Cliff Claven goes on Jeopardy, and copy all his answers...7

@KevinFletcher, LOL. There’s a CRAZY guy on Jeopardy now. Today he beat the all time record for a one-day total. The record was $76,000. Today he won $110,000. His 3 day total is 240,000. He’s a professional sports gambler and risks all his money but also seems to know everything so it’s not that much of a risk. Very fun to watch. My husband and I record and play every evening. I have to say I think we’re worse without alcohol. Or maybe we just thought we were brilliant with it.11

9 more sleeps until D-day! I am packing the contents of my china cabinet this morn and most of my pots...perhaps taking over a few small tables and waiting for the courier to come back today with my blinds that they attempted to deliver yesterday...Thankfully, I have today off and hopefully they arrive this morn so I don`t have to wait around the entire day. I took yesterday off from packing or moving anything and am in full swing today. I'm so thankful that I was able to have both places for this month to slowly get myself organized, but it is still a lot of work moving and now I fully remember why I do not want to move again for a very long time, IF EVER!! LOL 3 moves in 2 years is just too much, BUT this is a great space and I am certain it's the one for me.Today I have been working on perspective.
I am trying to develop coping skills and this is the one I am working on. Arming my tool belt with the tools to keep be sober!!
This is interesting to me and wondered if you feel like elaborating on perspective as a coping skill.
Hope y'all have a healthy, happy AF day!!7 -
@lorrainequiche59, have a wonderful day on your new adventure! How great to have found the space that suits you.5

@donimfp Based on how incredibly attractive I am to women when I'm drunk, I'd say you are probably SUPERB Jeopardy players under the influence...
@lorrainequiche59 We bought my Grandparents farm from my grandmother just before she passed, and have been living there for 26 years now. I've always said, if I ever have to move, I'm just plowing a fire break and thumping a match to it all.
@Ed_Zilla I typed out a long post about my bike riding past, and then hit the done button on my phone (AGAIN) instead of the reply button, so I lost it all. Suffice it to say, it was a witty, insightful, incredibly humorous, and intelligently written post, and the world is worse for it's demise...8 -

I am attempting to use perspective to slow down... analyze the situation and not let a stressor trigger the need for a drink.
This is what I said to a friend yesterday about perspective:Today I have taken each challenge and immediately looked at the worst case scenario. Knowing this will likely not happen, I asked myself "How do I want this to play out."
The one situation that required the most effort took about 1:30. I sat patiently as I was transferred to no fewer than 15 different people. I did not get my desired outcome, but only one step away. Perspective and patience saved me 2 days missed from work, probably $400 and 2 trips to Atlanta.
I swapped for 1 trip to a suburb, maybe 2-3 hours off work and about $150.
I did not use this technique this morning. I completely snapped at my husband and was a total B!+c#. Maybe I am still edgy... maybe it was 5:15 AM and I was still half asleep... no excuse, but I still snapped.
I am still working on this today

Hello everyone. I've been lurking here for a while wondering if I'd fit in with the sober crowd. I've been AF for 25 days now, and I can't believe I've gone that long without a drink! Last time I went that long without drinking was when I had my daughter almost 6 years ago. I've been drinking almost half my life (that sounds weird to say). I drank pretty heavily for a few years up until a year and a half ago. Last year I still drank regularly, but only on the weekends. Nothing specific happened to me last month but I figured enough is enough and I decided to try 30 days without alcohol and I'm almost there already! Once the 30 days is up I'm going to keep going because I'm just tired of alcohol and all the problems it causes and I just don't want to drink at all anymore.
I'm going through a lot in my life now and I originally thought, "this is the worst time to stop drinking!" But really, it's been the best time to stop drinking. I have a husband who still drinks. He cut down some himself in the past year but he has no plans to stop drinking completely and is not supportive of me not drinking. People who don't drink are "squares" to him. So I'm alone in this but I don't really care. I'm doing it for myself!14 -
@nbusam - Glad you dropped in on us. Don't be a stranger. Hope you will post some more.
@kevinrfletcher - hahaha - been there and done that too many times myself. I would type a longer message but I need to get on my bike before the cold weather returns tomorrow
@BuffMom84 - I am glad you quit lurking. My wife still drinks and now I don't. I never drank and drove so this works out OK because I was always sober chauffeur (until I got home and filled my tank with bourbon). We figured out how to make this work and I am sure you will figure out the same with your husband. Don't forget there are a lot of drinks that can be made as "virgin" with no alcohol.8 -
@nbusam YAY 5 months AF...natural loners aren`t necessarily anti-social. You`re likely selective in who you let in your space and that`s ok...less drama that way LOL WELCOME5

@Beka3695We`re all a "work" in progress4

@BuffMom84 I can relate to a couple of things you shared. #1 Nothing in particular happened to me either when I gave up alcohol...I too decided enough was enough and #2 The "worst" time to stop drinking IS the "best" time to stop drinking. When my BFF was diagnosed with ovarian cancer I was on one of my sober spells and thought I was really glad I was sober at that point because I could totally be there for her...although I did cave and continued to drink through that year until her death. A month later I gave it up....it will be the first anniversary of her death in 8 days and the first anniversary of my sobriety a month after that. On one hand it's hard to believe she's been gone a whole year, but it also feels like forever. It's just weird …10

@lorrainequiche59 Good luck on your move! Take only things that ‘spark joy”. I am furniture shopping. I went to a place that restores old furniture and decided to take a class from them (painting furniture). That will bring some life to some of the precious small pieces that I don’t want to leave behind, yet I don’t really like anymore. We shall see if painting turns out.
I am starting to really go through my things in the basement. I don’t want to leave behind my junk for the family to clean out one day, yet I am completely overwhelmed with all the “stuff” downstairs. I cried a little when I came across my wedding dress. Anyway, I am so much more productive sober. Each evening, I work out, eat dinner and go through my things for my move. I’ve got more energy that’s for sure without wine in my system.
@kevinrfletcher you make me laugh! Thanks for your humorous spin on things.
Regarding spouses that drink, I remember a sad moment for me. When I confided in him that I think I”m an alcoholic, he empathized and then promptly ordered himself a glass of wine (we were at a restaurant). Sure, he has the right to do that. But sometimes, thoughtfulness goes a long way. That was probably not the most empathetic thing he could have done after my confession.
On the other hand, it is our own journey. And not everyone has a problem with alcohol. I think in early sobriety I wish my husband took a break from drinking just to show some support. It was a delicate time for me and I was still feeling “resentful” that I couldn’t drink. That’s just my story and take on it. Everyone is on their own path.10 -
