Who am I? I am Katla. I was the only child of older parents. My mom had two miscarriages before I was born. It was my job to be healthy. I’ve taken that to heart and do my best in that quarter.
My mom and dad were lifelong chain smokers and were rude about it. I grew up hating my parents’ cigarette smoking. After I married I wouldn’t allow cigarettes in my home. They thought I was being mean to them. Smoking was a primary cause of poor health and ultimately caused their deaths.
My DH is a celiac, diabetic, and also has MS. He is also gluten free, and it helps. He is working hard on figuring out how to enjoy life and stay healthy at the same time. We have four grandchildren. Our oldest granddaughter also has diabetes.
I feel very lucky that my health is good. I work at it. I exercise, take yoga regularly and ride my friend’s horse when I can.

Hello all!
Who am I?
I'm Elizabeth and I live in Decatur, GA, which is really part of Atlanta. I just turned 55. I grew up in the Los Angeles area (Northridge, if you know LA) and my dad still lives there. I have a sister who is my best friend and lives in Toronto. I married the love of my life almost 4 years ago. It took us a while to find each other! We have two cats, Linus and Lucy(that's Lucy in my profile pic), and a 10 month old corgi named Pippin. I somehow ended up in university administration and have been at Emory for almost 22 years.
I've always struggled with having to lose 10-20 pounds. My mom passed away suddenly in Sept. 2017 and the weight crept on through having to manage things and grief. I was up to 171 (I'm 5'3"), eating poorly and not exercising. I had tried a lot of things in the past, but read something about MFP and decided to try it. I had been steadfastly against counting calories, but gave it a try. I met my first goal (30 pounds) very recently and am going for 5 more. Which, of course, are being incredible difficult to get rid of! I walk at least 10K steps most days, work out with a personal trainer 2 days a week, and am, for the first time in my life, starting to run.
I read this board most days and want to get better about posting too, so people can get to know me.
May goals:
Lose that blasted 5 pounds!
Post every day on MFP
Cook dinner at least 1x a week
Start meditating again

I am just getting over my second cold of the season! I have applied as a substitute teacher while my husband is farming. I have to go fill out the paperwork today. I may only work a day here or there but it will break up the monotony. My husband works from 8:00am till 9:00pm if not later! The only day he has off is Sunday. We may head up to Winnipeg Canada one of those Sundays. I definitely need to keep myself busy. It’s a little chilly here. As soon as it warms up there is a huge swimming pool and frisbee golf course out my back door as well as a walking path. And of course I have a lot of playtime with Shep!

Hi ladies! I'm sticking pretty close to my goals so far, though I went over by 100-ish calories one day recently. It helps me a lot to know that other people can see what I'm doing/eating.
In a few minutes, I'll be going on my first bicycle ride in about 2-3 years. And more importanrly, my first since the 2 knees were replaced. I'm excited and scared at the same time.
I just set small goals for now, so I can achieve them and stay motivated. I am way out of shape, but not as bad as I thought.

Barbie we lived in Ukiah from 1959 til I went to Cal in 1968.
That is so interesting. I was at my son's track meet in Colton yesterday afternoon, and a family had baseball caps with the names of businesses on them -- but under each business name was "Ukiah, Oregon." I had never heard of it before, and now, two days in a row.
Strange world.

These "Who Am I" segments are so intetesting, I might just copy pertinent info down.💖 Just so I can know who's who, who's where, and what's what. Would you object? It wouldn't be anything I would save online. I am old-fashioned so it might just be an index card to be filed with what you're interested in. It makes chatting so much more personal.
Who is Rebecca?
I am from Gresham, a suburb of Portland, Oregon, currently living in Whidbey island off Washington state. I am married going on 35 years to a retired Navy Chief. I am going to be 57 in June. We have 3 sons, eldest active duty son, we are roommates with, here in the island. Our middle son is married soon to become a daddy on the 10th of this month! Eeek, I'm really excited! My youngest son is active Navy in Japan, doing the same rate job that my husband did.💖. He is my baby and I miss him so much! He's been gone since November, and he has 4 years over there. Hopefully he can come home next Christmas!
My husband had a complete liver transplant back in 2014, so he is retired, and I pretty much retired too, to care for him. Now that he's better, we are just lazy happy. There were many years he was sick, so we are just making up for lost time. My weight loss journey started when I was a child. Living on a farm, with access to so much healthy food, you'd think I would have been not overweight, but I had Betty Crocker for a mother. Still, no excuse I realize she did the best she could.
I was pretty normal weight when I first married, but being a sailors wife was pretty lonely, and we were stationed in Japan. Whatever I looked like, I felt as big as a house! I was a fat American in a sea of small people. I think I also used my fat as a barrier from society. Living on a base and a carrier would come back, it was 5000 guys all interested in you, opening doors etc. I felt conspicuous, and it was unsettling. In 2009 I did let silly Jenny Craig tell me how to eat, and I lost 70 lbs. I went from 265- 195 lbs, but sadly I didn't lose the weight in my head. My husband was getting sicker by then, eldest was going into the Navy, and it was many things I had no control over. Again just excuses I realize.
Presently I am 242, but I feel ok. I would love to get to 195 again. I remember what it felt like. I also have a morbid reason. One of the things to do when you're old is to plan what you wish to happen when you pass on. I found a company, that will accept bodies for medical purposes. They come get you, use you, and cremate you on their dime. They will return your ashes to your family or scatter them at sea. I was told you can't be too obese to qualify. Kind of a weird reason to lose weight huh? It is definitely not motivating me.

Carol - When my Grandmother went into the hospital and we found out she wouldn't be able to go home, they kept her at the hospital until a bed opened up in the nursing home, is that how it works there as well? You and Lisa both did so well with your knee surgeries. If I ever need one, you two will be my role models.
Kim - I like thrift store shopping too, when I went for jeans the other day I looked at the thrift store first. They didn't have any in the size I needed in the style I liked. I will be going there for some business clothes if I get this job, they had a good selection.
Michele - Denise is due this month isn't she? Is that why you are going there?
Heather - I think you are a tremendous Granny you just needed to be closer to enjoy it. Is there something in the Canesten that affects women over 65? That makes no sense to me why they won't sell it to you at a pharmacy. Interesting facts about obesity and poorer regions. I have often said that there must be a link. It is much more economical to eat processed foods than it is to eat fresh. I think it also has to do with education and how people are taught to cook.
Karen in VA - I totally agree with you, I bet that your childhood trauma did have an effect on your relationship with food. I am forever telling the people in my family to not force the kids to clean their plates. They know when they are hungry and when they are full and they should be allowed to stop. The problem is they say they are full and before the table is cleared are asking for a snack sometimes. So it's just that they don't want what was served. I don't know how to fix that part.

I started my third set of swim lessons last night, this one is stroke improvement. I learned a lot in just the first night and the instructor really pushed me so my heart rate was up the whole time. It was great.
I didn't have the chat I was expecting yesterday from the lady about the job, as a matter of fact I have not even had a response to my email which is very strange. I hope she is OK, she has been very quick in responding for over two weeks so I am a little concerned.
Today I am going to go into my craft room and make some cards for Mothers Day for my MIL and Mom. I should get them in the mail this weekend.
I am watching the snow fall yet again today. It is supposed to rain all weekend and then next week we are finally supposed to get some nice weather. I hope that the forecast is accurate.

Hi all,
I am Bonnie Lee. I am a 50-year old writer living in Vancouver, Canada with my husband and two cats who we liberated from the streets of Japan. When we moved to Vancouver (from Los Angeles) almost 5 years ago, I had just broken my ankle (walking on the streets of LA). I gained nearly 3 kilos which I had trouble losing because I always found an excuse to stay at my desk in my home office. About two years ago, I missed my first period, experienced my first hot flash, and started gaining more weight. Now I am working to lose at least 10 kilos and stop hiding in my writing and introverted tendencies. I am hardly good at being social or even likeable (my husband teases me by saying I am the archetype for bitchiness on my best days ), but I want to be better and more engaged in the world around me.
My goals this month:
Stick to calories limits
Run 3x a week
Walk every day to complete my move goals
Strengthen hip and glute muscles
Join a local hiking group
Oh and @coastalgosgal, Japan is a lovely country. We lived there for over ten years and miss it terribly. If you can, try and visit your son during New Years. They have a way of celebrating the holiday I found lovely. My mum and Grammie visited us there when they were 51 and 78. Grammie loved trying all the new foods and meeting my friends there.

Margaret -- what you said about mental illness and expectations made a lot of sense to me. I have been thinking about it a lot.
It still upsets me, and I think it is exactly what, about the whole thing with my son, that bothers me the most. I am not allowed to have any expectations, or rather what I would consider reasonable expectations for what an intelligent 23 year old should be doing. Over the years, I just keep lowering them and lowering them, and now, I am thrilled if he is out of bed and dressed. That makes me really sad.

Went to the water class today. The plan for tomorrow is to do a 30 minutes to fitness DVD
Kim – almost all of my clothes and many household items come from the Salvation Army. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on my clothes. If people only knew where things come from! Even Denise (who is VERY materialistic) complimented me on this one sweater that I wore. I didn’t tell her where it came from. The only thing I really can’t buy there are pants since I need a petite size and they very rarely have petites. I don’t buy bathing suits, underwear, or shoes there, either. Update: went there and got some yarn to make the loom hats while I'm at the Green Room. Actually, I'll probably take that craft up to Denise's.
Barbara – a guy at the Green Room gave me a scrap piece of this tulle material (the stuff tu-tu’s are made out of). That would work, but I can’t think of a stiffener that wouldn’t wash out in the rain. I tried this “OK to wash it” stuff but the bottle says that it is a fabric glue Update: didn’t work out too well.

Jess got accepted (transfer) to Iowa. However, she needs to “catch up” by taking some online courses which she has to complete by the end of August. I can’t help it – I worry. I’m just concerned that she’s going to be in VA and may not focus on her work. However, I keep telling myself that she’s committed. She said the reason she wanted to transfer was because the health care on the island wasn’t good. To me, she only had one more year. But it’s her life
Tracey – yup, that’s why I’m going to Denise’s. I’ve tried calling her, left 2 voice mail messages, sent her an email, sent Pete an email telling them that I plan to be there Tuesday. I don’t know how else to get in touch with her.
Vince and Jess want to go to Hibachi Grill for dinner tonight. I know what I’m going to have. You can get a plate of veggies and shrimp, have them grill it, you can ask that they don’t use any butter which is what I do, and then they have fruit for dessert. I usually get just water to drink
Tonight I'm supposed to usher at the Green Room. Really, I'm doing it because I want to see the play "the drowsy chaperone"
Oh, Newcomer stuff: this one lady died and I noticed that the girl who is taking over membership doesn't have the means to delete someone from the mail list so I did it. But yet, she needs to think "gee, this member died, I'm in charge of membership, how does this affect me". Besides, I have no clue or ability to delete someone from the website, which is fine by me. It really to me isn't that big a deal if she stays on the website.

Carol - meant to mention that Sunday will be three months for me since the replacement, and my knee no longer feels like dead weight that I'm dragging, it's moving right along with me! And the pain subsided somewhere in that time, as well. The occasional odd click or clunk, but research says that's natural. I just appreciate the lack of pain, after decades of it in varying amounts.

Who am I?
I am your fellow traveler on the road to health and fitness having been part of this awesome community since December of 2012. I've had weight issues my entire life, and after touching a high of 184, am now 149, and enjoy the strength, balance, endurance and holistic well-being that is a by-product of smart eating, regular exercise, a good attitude and the wisdom accrued after 63 spins around the sun.
I married my DH 32 years ago, and we have no kids, but have been adopted by a bossy leash-loving cat. DH is 11 years my senior, and started showing signs of dementia about 4 years ago. He is now stage 4, and I have retired from my 22 year career as a fundraising consultant for Girl Scouts of the USA to stay home and be his caregiver. He is very happy and healthy, but this disease has robbed me of the highly intelligent, vibrant, and productive man I married. I'm trying to make the best of this by planning vacations that work within his limitations. In fact, we will be celebrating his 75th in Portland next month. I have to constantly work at practicing compassion.
My free time is spent reading books on health, Reiki and fitness, container gardening, and trying new recipes. I am a shameless sports fan for all the Denver teams (Go Nuggets!), and our TV is usually tuned into a game.
And, as you all know, right now I'm recovering from two fractured ankles and a broken toe. After years of checking the Fitbit for high numbers of steps, I've now set myself goals like "stay under 1500 steps", and "less than 10 minutes of recorded activity". I find the irony hilarious. I am doing chair exercises, stretches and upper body work with a resistance band for now.

Bonnie Lee- Yes I loved Japan my second tour there. I had my eldest son, he was 2 yrs old when we got there. With a child I was able to integrate into society easier. I was part of a Japanese neighbors play group, and in fact by the time we moved back stateside, my son was scared of American children! On the downside his language skills weren't the best, speaking with no L's or R's! World was pronouced, "wowood"!
I miss the respectful way people treated each other. I miss how society respected their elders. I miss our favorite ramen place, with its steamy windows, and slurping sounds.

So, didn't have time to check out this thread yesterday-my goodness there were a lot of updates. Thanks to all who shared some about themselves. What an interesting and diverse group this is!

Connie in KY-I have Ph.D. from Ohio State and live about an hour from Columbus. Going there tomorrow to visit youngest son.
Tracey—hope you get a break on the employment front soon.
NYKaren—I am also giving thought to the next chapter. I have over the magic number for Ohio public retirement. Still enjoying my job, but within the next two years I will probably retire.
Carol in GA-my life is pretty uninteresting also, which means there is very little drama and that makes me happy
ALdogpile—I’m taking off my gain after having both hips replaced (one in 2016, the other Feb. of 18). It takes a while to get strength, exercise back, but you will get there.
Viv-I lost my husband almost four years ago. Moving out of the comfort zone has taken some time but I am getting there.
TerriRichards-the NHS in the UK seems to be more strict on the weight requirement before hip replacement than the US. I was at a low weight before my first replacement and the doctor said that would make it easier for me. Bone-on-bone pain being gone is wonderful.
Rori-good luck staying relatively inactive-but you need to heal. Chair exercises are a good compromise.
I had a vacation day today. Spent some time shopping picking up a few odds and ends. Nice not to have to fit that in to my weekend. Had nerve test to see if pain in foot is lower back related. Doctor said my nerve reactions were very good (like a 19 year old, whatever that means). He will send results to podiatrist. I personally think I would benefit from orthotics, but will keep up stretching, etc., which is helpful. Went for a nice long walk this afternoon after the rain finally moved out. Got in 15,000 steps today so feel good about that.
Meeting up with youngest son tomorrow in Columbus to go shopping for his birthday. I guess I am buying him a golf club. It is easiest sometimes to just go with them and pay for what they want.

When I walk my dogs in the morning I use an app on my phone called "Walk for a Dog". It maps my walk, tells me my average speed, how far I walked, and how long I walked. Here is the map from this morning's walk.

@michele - for the tulle you could try an outdoor grade clear varnish spray. A few coats should stiffen it and since it’s outdoor grade should hold up through rains and sun. They sell it at Michaels here in the spray paint section but hardware stores and Walmart carry it too. It’s not what it’s used for but it should work.

Hello ladies, I always miss y'all when I take a break. Went to my GP on the 1st and he took me off the HCT and potassium that you have to take with me since it is actually a diuretic. The next day I saw my GYN (who actually put me on it years ago, and now I have to keep a BP Chart AM/PM. He is actually the senior of the firm and nothing happens that doesn't go through him. The MD that he started with is still seeing some little old ladies who refuse to let any other MD to handle their GYN issues and he comes into the office every single day and looks at the age of 94 as good as he looked when I first starting going to him. Then he brought my GYN in and I became his patient and first problem pregnant woman. Hated him at first, told the older OB/GYN that I did NOT like him; but, love him now. He wants me to go to PT & Balance place to help me 'get off my cane'. I am not sure I will ever feel comfortable without it outside or in a place with steps. Talked to him about my appointment to the Neurologist the end of the month. Only a Neurologist is the kind of MD (in Georgia) that can determine whether or not you should drive even if another MD put you on a state-mandated law that you have to not have had a seizure for a continuous 6 month period of time. I had just come off a 6-month diving restriction in May 2 years ago, and 3 days later my 'sleep apnea' MD put me back on one until I saw my Neurologist; who in the meantime went back home because of a family matter and would be back after the first of the year. His receptionist did not say anything about it and I saw his NP (who can't take me off the D/R. The next time I went back she had decided that it would be my turn to see her again, even though he was there; then made another appointment that would have their flip/flop and it was my turn to see her again. After I see the NP for the NeuroSurgeon, I wanted to make sure I would SEE him in late May ... I did not want to see the NP again. They are not in my preferred MD, therefore, I have to pay out of my pocket the difference. Normally I do not have to pay anything when I go to the MD. but it doesn't matter at this point, my family does not think I need to drive any longer. My dear sweet Cutie of a granddaughter suggested that they take in for an early AM appointment, come get me and take me either to the mall or to the library to keep me from being bored. We'll see how that works. At least, maybe then I will get some exercise. So tired of this yo-yo-ing I seem to have started on. Now I am determined to lose what I have gained and more. I hope that when you are not on this site you get dropped. It took some work to be able to get to May, up and down the pages and knowing I can never catch up. So much has happened to me since I rolled down the steps and hit my head on the concrete and 2 or 3 bad falls that made me call my main MD in all this. She called my Neurologist's office to make sure I would actually see him on my next appointment. I guess we'll see ... me making a pure @$$ of myself. I realize that my family doesn't want me to drive anymore. After 21 months, I've gotten used to it. We'll work it out, something Louis told my 'sleep apnea' MD. Louis laughs and jokingly said he should have traded me in on two 21-year-olds. Now he would have to trade me in on three 21-year-olds and a baby or two and a toddler. He knows I am joking with him. I sometimes wonder if the original fall might have been another seizure (or even a small mini-stroke. They have suggested building a ramp; I want someone who knows how to add, subtract and basically realize how many steps you can make from the top of the deck down to the concrete floor. There is not a single step from the carport to top of the deck at 42". That first step down to the carport is 3 inches more or less; but, none of them is the same size. GGGrrrr!!!! I told them they could build a ramp when I was wheelchair bound; otherwise, they can find a carpenter to fix the steps. Sorry for ranting; just needed to say my peace around friends and you have been that to me. One reason I have stayed away from posting. Seems like I am a real *kitten*!8

Interesting ... my husband is on a waiting list to get a nerve test for his left leg and foot. Since waking from his coma, he has complained that his foot in particular, and leg to some extent, are partially numb and just don't feel right.
It's not his back ... he's had the tests for that. As an aside, it turns out that he and I both have osteoarthritis in our backs, in about the same locations! But that's not causing his foot and leg issues.
It could be a side effect of the brain injury, like when someone has a stroke and one side of their body is affected. Or it could be a side effect of all the drugs they used to keep him in the coma. But they would like to do the nerve test to, I think, determine which nerves are affected and perhaps to have some idea if they'll ever return to normal.
I see a podiatrist who gave me a bunch of stretching exercises for my feet and ankles, which I've started again, and I really should get orthotics. I must contact him again about that.
I hope that your podiatrist will be able to sort things out for you. Good job on the 15,000 steps!!

Had trouble finding. The thread. Probably cause my brain quit working several hours ago during a crazy shift at work. Finally figured out it is not April any more.
Going to Mexico tomorrow with 2 of my kids and 3 grandchildren. Lost 20 out of the 45 pounds I wanted to lose. It will have to do
Goals for may- get my shite together. I will be 63 and should not still be struggling with this. I need to slow down my life and get some activity accomplished.
