Hi everyone! Happy May😊!
I have been reading everyone’s posts. So much good information and advise!
Barbie-Thank you for keeping this group going.
Rori-Glad your injuries aren’t worse and you are smiling!
Heather-Was it you saying something about having pronated feet and managing to walk and run and get the weight off despite of it? Thanks for sharing as I have that problem.
My new mirrored closet doors are keeping me motivated. I have to look at myself a lot now and I don’t like what I see. This will keep me focused.
Had a busy and stressful day. Did go to Balance Challenge class at senior center. Then took my mom to Costco for hearing aid adjustment. I got a great workout taking mom in her transport chair to the Hearing Center. Then outside again to get a cart. Then shopping while mom is taken care of. Outside to put goods in the car. Then back inside to collect mom and get her to the car!
With all that didn’t plan dinner. Made a quick dinner of mushrooms, bell pepper, diced tomatoes and sausage over Shirataki noodles! Now I can relax a bit.
Lost 4 pounds in April.
I think I will try setting goals for the week.
Exercise class 3X
Walk at least 5000 steps at least 3X
Log foods every day
Stay within my calorie limit
Loss at least one pound
Fifteen minutes of filing/shredding each day
When under stress take a deep breath and Smile 😊 It’s not as bad as it seems!

That being said, I haven't felt deprived at all having discovered Skinnytaste.com and the genius that is Gina and her incredible recipes. If you haven't checked her out you should no matter what your diet preference (gluten free, keto, low carb, weight watcher) or tools of preference (instapot, crock pot, air fryer, oven, stove). I have never had light recipes with SO MUCH flavor or had so much fun planning, prepping and cooking. The entire house is losing weight, not to mention the money we are saving on eating out. I can't recommend her recipes enough... and it's working. I am not affiliated with Gina or Skinnytaste in any way.. just a HUGE fan!
Shari
I refer to several different recipe sites, and one of them is Skinnytaste.
Slender Kitchen is another one: https://www.slenderkitchen.com/
Emily Bites: https://emilybites.com/
Cooking Light: https://www.cookinglight.com/
I've "liked" them all so that recipes appear in my facebook newsfeed just about every day.

Welcome to May. Thank you Barbi for the new thread. Wishing everyone well this month.
My goals for May are to log food daily and get in the habit of logging before a single bite. 😉 It works so well but I get lazy. This will be my last month in Washington until fall. I’ll head back to Alaska at the end of May. I won’t have internet and I’ll miss connecting with this community daily.
And I’ll miss my husband but he doesn’t like my summer life and prefers to remain in Washington. He used to visit for a couple weeks each year but about 10 years ago he decided living without electricity and indoor plumbing was too difficult. So he stays home and takes care of the house and yard and I go back home with Ella and come back around freeze up. . It works for us, but his friends tease him that we haven’t really been married for 26 years because I’m gone for a third of each year. :-)
Have a good day everyone. It’s sunny and warm today already. Spring is such a pleasure.
Betsy in NW Washington
What's in Alaska? Peace and quiet?
I lived without electricity, indoor plumbing, etc. etc. ... completely off the grid for my first year in Australia, and that was enough for me. If I were to go off the grid again, I'd do it differently. It's a lot of work!!

In the past I've been on threads with 4-10 people or so. It seems like way more here. It seems like some of you guys know one and other really well. It'll take a while to get to know everyone.
In the interests of getting to know each other ... (we haven't done this in a little while) ... a question for everyone here ...
Who are you?
I am Machka.
Machka is actually a nickname I've had for about 17 years and I use it on and off forums. When I was going through my divorce from my first marriage, I wanted to create something of a new identity for myself and so I chose a name to use on cycling forums. I'm Serbian and love cats, so Machka is the Serbian word for cat ... I also liked the name because it includes parts of my birth names. For reference, Machka is pronounced something like: Match-ka. It's a hard "ch".
My husband and I "met" on a cycling forum first, and then in person on a very long bicycle ride in France called the Paris-Brest-Paris in 2003. So he knew me as Machka first, and still calls me Machka.
I am Canadian-Australian. I was born in Canada and lived all over western Canada, and then moved to Australia in 2009. I became a citizen on April 2, 2016. My husband is Australian and we met in person in France (as I mentioned above), started our relationship in 2005, then had a long distance relationship until I moved in 2009. However we were married in Canada in 2008 in a very quiet ceremony on a dock on Lake Annette near Jasper, after cycling a century (100 mile ride).
I was nearly finished my Bachelor of Education, so I stayed in Canada, and he returned to Australia.
Unfortunately, in early 2009 there was a massive bushfire in Victoria, Australia and my husband's home and many of the surrounding places were wiped out. About 175 people died in that fire. It was devastating! My husband narrowly escaped with his life ... he left his place as it was going up in flame. 3 months later I moved into the area. There were no places to live, but fortunately his boss offered us a very rustic shack on the back of the orchard property ... so we lived about 2 km off the grid for my first year in Australia. I learned to cook over an open fire! And to haul water and firewood and everything. When I was able to get a job, it was in bushfire recovery.
When the area had more or less "recovered", we were a bit burnt out, so to speak, so we popped everything into storage and did a Round-The-World trip for 8 months in 2012. Then in 2013 we moved to Tasmania where we've been since.
I work full time, attend uni part time working toward my Master's degree in IT, and am my husband's carer after his workplace accident in 2018.
I'm also a long distance cyclist (although there hasn't been much of that in the past year), and love being active: walking, running, rowing, weights, etc. etc. etc.
So that's me in a [rather large] nutshell.
Who are you?1 -
Rory,, so good you’re in a boot and can drive. So good on the recumbent bike. 😉
Kim, yes I suction dredge in Alaska from breakup to freezeup. My husband says someone has to be brain dead or born to it to do what I do. Funny. I’ve been doing it all of my life and enjoy my summers. Sometimes my adult children and/or grandkids join me.

I am Laura,
I’m 66 years old. Lived in Los Angeles all my life. Have one son I raised by myself.
Retired last June from a job as a school clerk for twenty years. (Took the job for employer provided health care)
In 2013 I sold my house and moved in with my mom after my dad died.
Since then my mom has had a series of accidents and illnesses. She now needs a lot of care and I am her main caregiver.
When I had my own house I enjoyed hosting travelers. I belong to an international women’s group that promotes friendship across borders and cultures. I couldn’t afford to travel for a long time. The women’s group brought the world to me! I was also a Workaway host. I have met and made friends with the most interesting and amazing people from around the world by hosting. No room in mom’s house for that. I still meet people who visit LA and enjoy showing them my favorite places! I love playing tour guide!

So much added here in one day. Good seeing people set goals for the month and keep working.
Who am I? Still trying to figure that out.
64, will be 65 in November. Widowed nearly 4 years ago (we were married 29 years). Two sons and a step son. Oldest son and step married to beautiful women (and while they are physically beautiful, I am referring more to their spirit). 5 grandkids.
Still work in an executive position which keeps me busy. Not sure when I will retire. Actually still having fun. Still working on getting used to being on my own. Grief is such a strange process, but it does get better. This weight loss journey is part of me redefining myself and taking care of me. I am enjoying my life and am trying different things slowly.

I am Barbie. I live with my husband who is the love of my life and my dogs, Bessie and Sasha, and my cat, Bernie. We used to travel a lot in an RV and now stay home most of the time except for day trips around the North Olympic Peninsula in Washington where we live now. I found MFP in 2009 and began the umpteenth weight loss attempt of my life not knowing that it would be the one that would work. I found this thread almost immediately and after a year or so, the woman who posted the new thread each month asked me to fill in for her because she was going on a long vacation. I have been starting the thread each month ever since except for one month when I got stressed and forgot and someone took the reins and filled in. I am an introvert and value time alone. I have a few friends but primarily avoid social situations. I walk my dogs for about two hours every morning no matter what the weather (there is no bad weather, just the wrong clothing) usually with a friend for part of the time. I walk them again for shorter walks during the day by myself. My husband has health problems that limit his energy so I spend a lot of time riding my exercise bike next to his recliner while we watch TV together. I retired from teaching first grade in public school in Northern California in 2004 and moved to Washington where I found a line dance class and fell in love with it. Now I dance weekly in an intermediate class and teach a weekly beginner class. I lost over 50 pounds with the help of MFP and this thread and have kept it off by continuing to log food and exercise. The women on this thread have become the family I never had. I have learned so much from them not only about healthy eating and exercise but also about how to deal with real life situations.

Evening, ladies,
See, I knew there was something off. Someone I know showed me how to reset some things on my goals, and VOILA, there was a 500+ calorie difference. I think an update that I wasn’t aware of shifted things on me: that’s happened before. Maybe a blessing—this horrible cold is killing my appetite so I may be able to shift into this new calorie level easier than I thought I would. Thanks for all of the reminders, that will help too. What a lovely bunch this is💜
Let’s see, who am I? I’m a nurse, married to a doctor for 34 years. I’m a mom of 3: two sons, 32 and 31 y/o and a daughter, 20 y/o. She is adopted from Guatemala, and fits right in with the guys because my husband is Spanish. I’m Polish, none of them look anything like me! John and I are originally from the Chicago area and after a few moves made our way to the Home of the Corvette, been here 27 years this month. I finished my Master’s degree a year ago, and cannot get a teaching or staff development position. So, we are all in school, on 3 different schedules—just like old times! My oldest son will be married 2 years next month. Love my DIL to pieces. The chaos of last year with my daughter trying to go back to live with her birth family, some may remember, but it is better and she is still home with us. My husband was retired by his anesthesia group at Christmas, 2013, the week we moved into our new house. We will both have degrees in medical billing and coding, we finish about 4 months apart. We will be off traveling again, once we can do the billing and coding remotely— have computer, can travel and work! Depending on where we hire on, we may have to spend some time in an actual facility. I have a big family and between them all there are 10 other nieces and nephews, so I still spend a lot of time in Chicago. My Mom is 80, very healthy but my dad died in 2000, my father in law in 2010 and I never met john’s mom. We have 2 of the silliest dogs on the planet: a 3 yr old Havanese (who to this day cannot drink water without nearly drowning) and a 9 yr old Yorkie that we rescued right off of the street (who thinks she is the size of a bull mastiff, belches like you wouldn’t believe after eating, and barks at anything in the dark, including my daughter’s car parked in the driveway). They wrestle and run laps several times a day and you just have to get out of the way. If i ever figure out again how to post a picture, I will.
Thanks for starting this, Machka!

Happy May Day!!
Who am I??
Let’s see...I’m Connie and I live in KY. I lived in Columbus, OH for about ten years while I completed my masters in public health at The Ohio State University. My true occupation is clinical laboratory technologist. I worked for many years, completed my masters and did research for Ohio State. I moved back to my hometown 11 years ago so I could care for aging family. I’m a single mom to a 15 year old daughter who is an aspiring ballerina.
Why am I here? Due to a lot of emotional upheaval last fall, I let my type 2 diabetes get out of control. I got back to MFP and the gym. I’ve lost 42 or 43 pounds since November. It really helps having everybody here. I’m pleased to say my diabetes is now well controlled.
Happy Derby!!

Barbie thanks for the new thread.
Today was my Mom’s 73rd Birthday, she is in a nursing home and my brother called me from there tonight so we could talk. She was not having a good memory day today. She thought my girls were still young and didn’t seem to know who I talked about when I mentioned Jonah’s name.
I have about 30 pages left to read of the last book and have asked what else I should study, I was told that I have done well and the rest of what I would need to know would be taught in training and learned through experience. Now I just need to have the meeting with the owner and to be told I have the job.
Who am I?
My name is Tracey and I live in Edmonton, Alberta. I was born and raised in Hartland, New Brunswick and when I say home that is usually where I’m talking about. I turned 50 last September, have been married almost 32 years. We have two adult daughters, Lauryn is 30, married to Ryan and they have given me two beautiful Grands. Jonah who shares a birthday with me is 7 and his sister Michaela is 3. My youngest daughter Kaitlyn is marrying her sweetheart in July of this year after 10 years of being together.
I am currently unemployed and trying desperately to find a job and have a lead on one in an industry I have never worked on so I have been studying up on what I can learn on my own.
I have lost 25 lbs over the last year and a bit, but have really only been maintaining since January. I am working on getting back to the losing though for the last week or so. I mostly walk and do some squats and such when I think of it. Tomorrow night I will start my 3rd set of swimming lessons since last April, a friend asked me to join her on this round of them. I hope my suit still fits me.
I didn’t have time to comment on everyone’s posts today but I have read.
Hugs to all that need them and cheers to all the successes.

Hi Gals,
Who are you?
I’m Kim, I live in Northern California, single – never married (just never found mr right/or even mr almost right), am 60 years old. I am “mom” to Levi my English springer spaniel, God mom to a 27 year old young man and a 22 year old young lady, and Auntie Kim to an almost 21 year old nephew and a 16 (today) year old step nephew.
I am self employed, I own 2 small business, a machine embroidery business that I do mostly afternoons/evenings and weekends and a gardening business that happens 4-5 mornings a week. My gardening clients include a pesticide free small urban farm for a children’s camp. This keeps me pretty darn busy.
I am also a domestic violence survivor, my abuser is my younger brother, who is now dying of colon rectal cancer – karma- be careful of how you treat the world.
I have been on mfp since 2014 have lost 30lbs, have 20-30 more to go.

Newbie to this forum but not to calorie counting! I am 71 years old and figure if I want to live to see 72, I need to get some of this weight off. Today (Wednesday) marked 4 weeks of of healthy eating. I didn't weigh myself when I started but did so yesterday. Will weigh myself again in a month.6

Forgot to mention that I live in Houston, TX.3

Hi Gals,
So some of you may have seen the feather patches I have been embroidering (I’ll add a pic) they are the “favor” for a friends wedding, it’s a very relaxed event, but happening about 250 miles away from my home. I have planned on going; have motel reservations, but have been dreading it. The bride and groom ride motorcycles and are in a few riding groups, motorcycles are not my thing, and as a result know very few of their friends. So a long drive, an expensive motel* (the town is way off the main road, so there are very limited accommodations) and I’d be having to be social with folks I don’t know. I have met a few and while those I have met are ok, it is a play hard, drink a lot, group. And while I would not label myself an introvert, I am not really an extrovert either. I find the being “on” exhausting. Well I was talking with a mutual friend of the brides and her plans for the wedding weekend folded, so she’s coming with me! And in contacting the Bride to tell her I found out that they had paid for the last hotel room in the really nice hotel she is staying at as the hotel would comp them 4 nights free for filling the hotel. So she’s only charging me $100 and the two of us will spilt the cost, it’s cheaper and a huge upgrade!
* the motel is a repainted motel 6 at $189 a night.
This will give me a buddy and save me a ton of money, until this all worked out this morning and I felt like a huge weight was being lifted off of me did I realize how stressed I was feeling about the money and the event.

Rori count me as an admirer at how you "flipped" your injuries. Powerful woman! I know you are going to heal up quickly!
Kim Love your embroidered feathers, what a treasured gift that will be. You know I totally relate to your anxiety about the wedding trip socially. SO glad that bringing someone along has lifted the weight off. Now is anyone expecting you to jump on a bike and roar down the road?
Laura your global hosting sounds so interesting, a way to learn about the wide world is fascinating to me.
Lisa loved the short video to say "I get to exercise", as a gift not a chore, mobility is a big gift, and I take it for granted too often.
Who am I, I'm a 57 year old music teacher, been with my DH for 30 years (22 of them married years) and raised a delightful daughter, Rachel, now a senior in college. Our lives together have been blessed, I truly enjoy teaching but am searching for my purpose on the next chapter aka, my third life. I hope it will be filled with volunteering, travelling, gardening, good healthy activity. For now I juggle work life and maintaining my weight loss and branching out a little more to take chances professionally, emotionally and socially. In short, I'm a work in progress!
NYKAREN7 -
Morning, afternoon, and evening, all,
Rori - You are truly the meaning of the word "marvelous," to be marveled at.
Kim - LOVE the feathers, they've turned out so well, glad the universe is looking out for you on your trip to the wedding.
Thanks, Machka, for the invite. I'm Lisa, I'll be 60 next year, I live in Arkansas with my second husband and love of my life, and one cat, Egg. He brought a 15-year-old son and a 17-year-old daughter with him, who both call me "Mom," (or sometimes, Mooooommmmmm! ) and my daughter's grandkids call me "Grandma," extremely heart-tugging for someone who after more than one surgery found out she was barren at the age of 25.
I've had a peripatetic life, authored three books, worked as: an assistant librarian, a flight attendant, a fitness center manager, a managing editor (three times), and among other less savory occupations, as an oilfield assistant controller, a consultant and a carnival ride operator. I am now a grant writer for Girl Scouts in Arkansas, mostly working out of my home. I had a gastric bypass in 2005, lost from 303 to 137 pounds, left my 27-year marriage, because losing weight fixes nothing in your marriage, and found my current and final husband in the deserts of West Texas a year later, probably because I wasn't looking.
Over the next eight years, also gained back 80 pounds of what I'd lost, because I eat when I'm happy. I've lost almost half that regain in the last year and a half, with the help and support of the amazing women here... We have been in Arkansas for a year now, and plan to stay here until we both croak over, and will probably still be remodeling this house when we do, even if it's 40 years from now.
Love y'all!

NYKaren, are you retiring soon, or planning for early retirement or something?
I've been teaching for ages. though it's a vocation I've been thinking I might like to move onto something else. I have sometimes thought teaching is good to do for just part of a career. my brother left tech and went into teaching at around 50. I have mostly taught. the idea of not teaching appeals to me.
Kate I think I might have liked being a librarian. did you like it? where in Greece and spain do you go?
Kim Awesome about the nice hotel and travel buddy. Lovely wedding gifts. I was thinking when going to an event like that I don't hesitate to hunker down in my room when I need to. hopefully there will be something or someone really worthwhile to connect with. so sorry about your brother and what you went through with him.
Hi Ruby, I'm new too, just 1 week old on this thread.
Tracey congratulations on weight loss and maintenance. I hope you get a job you like soon. what field are you looking into?
Connie great news about your health!
Machka. thanks for the question.
I checked in and then read up backwards and saw this recurring "who am I" question as a notable pattern! (lol!)
I'm gonna come back to that.
At present I'm mostly gonna whinge. I need to blow off a little steam. I'm feeling super stressed at present. I'm 55, a teacher. was a union rep last year; am still following up on some union stuff today and it stresses me out as the direction is not upright.
when I was young I would just leave if I didn't like something about a place, but at 55 it's less simple and also the economy is less good then in my youngun days.
though nothing super stressful happened, going to deal with this union thing today (I also had to wake up very early to listen to typescript and correct very erroneous minutes (the direction omits and twists things around).
So back home at 11ish to send something, some little mindless sweet eating (but still can maybe stay on track today) I had some dairy free coconut ice cream and a GF chocolate chunk cookie m&s, not a huge thing. but also good breakfast and an egg and lean meat for lunch.
I feel pain and chills and tired partly from stress, partly maybe from getting up so early.
I tend to feel chills when I feel stressed and want to crawl into bed.
I would like to chill after an intense long morning but my correctors are expecting to hear from me today.
also I'm stressed because the cheaper, less qualified one is available and I have to cancel out on the also good but less specialised and slightly more expensive (but not very expensive) one.
I would like to take a nap but need to contact the one I'm cancelling on and get some work done to send to the one I'm not cancelling on.
looking at my undone list, checking off some of that might make me feel good. 5 minutes meditation, then cleaning, then walk, then only the 2h will remain.
I think if I wasn't on this thread I would have had a mini indulgence. as it is I maybe caught myself in time. I'll see.
I enjoy reading your "who am I?"s and want to take the time to read them a few at a time.
thanks

Happy "May Day" plus 1!
Great day to hit the "reset" button for me. I started tracking and exercising in August. It has taken me all this time to lose 10 lbs, but I am ok with that. The problem now is that I have not been faithful tracking and 3 lbs. have crept back. Urghhhhhhh! I know that if I don't get back to my routines of exercising and tracking, I will gain it all back.
Goal for this month is to lose the 3 lbs. that I gained. I know what I need to do--I just need to do it! Have a great day ladies!4 -
Rori- Happy your injuries aren't more severe, but AH! both ankles requiring boot or non-weight bearing help? You are an amazing woman!
Heather- Your DH is fantastic with the kids! lol I love the way he lets them dress him up. Like Rori, I want to know if he went to the restaurant with the nail varnish still on! lol Either that, or in my mind, I am picturing him getting "unready" to go out as you get "ready" to go out! lol
Kim- Those patches are gorgeous! You did a great job! What a cool and unique wedding gift for guests!
New girls- There are a lot of us here, and don't get flustered if you can't keep us straight or keep up ( many of us skim posts from time to time). We all comment where we think we have something to offer. Feel free to do the same.
Lisa- Love that video! I am the "flipper" and that is the tact I use to get most of my stuff accomplished. "I get to" Oddly, I haven't used it with exercise. I need to start doing it.
Who am I
My name is KJ (Kelly). I am 52, 5'8" tall and need to lose about 80lb to reach my goal weight. I have been married for almost 30 years (in July). I am a mother of three (ages 32, 29, and 25) and grandmother of a two year old boy (grandbaby number two due in October). I am a childcare provider (25 years) and have a daycare in my home. So if you hear me talk about the kids; it is probably the daycare kids. My biggest hurdle as of late is the increase in hours I have had to take on due to my husband's health issues and job loss. My biggest life changer for how I handle everything has got to be my gratitude journal. I write down five things each day that I am grateful for. I got the idea from one of the ladies in this community (thank you again, Barbie)!
Three of my six kids are here, so I better scoot! Love to you all! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)7 -

I have heard nothing from the letters I sent.
Way too early to hear anything.
You'll get one of two reactions:
1) The letter will be considered one of many complaint letters which will either be ignored along with hundreds of others or you'll eventually get a formal letter thanking you for your letter and telling you they'll take it under consideration. If you get this kind of response, it will likely take 2-3 weeks, at least, because there are likely a pile of them to do and the office person might send out a dozen a day or something.
2) They'll consider it important enough to give you a real response, but in order to do so they'll have to send your letter to the lawyers and let the lawyers come up with a legally appropriate response. That'll take at least a month, probably more like 2 or 3 months.
Be patient! If you're going to get a good response from them, it will be a while.
