11.1 lovely trail miles today.
60 for June I think so far. Happy Father's Day to yall!7 -
16.25 miles this morning. Felt easy for about two hours, but the last 37 or so minutes were pretty brutal. 77F, 85% humidity, 20mph. Only had 12 oz of water on me. Tried to ration it, but when it ran out, and the sun came out, that was pretty much the end.
And felt weighted down with soul crushing guilt and regret, because I quit my '2nd job' software development contract. I tried to put up with it for 3 weeks, but each day was worse than the last. The knot in my stomach grew bigger every day, and I just couldn't take the stress any longer. I feel like I committed career suicide 😭. But if I would have stayed, it might have been the other kind. Maybe Home Depot is hiring....
[/img]
Spain is hiring. Perhaps we could look at a running commune of sorts.
There’s a shift in our house regarding career changes too, I can’t elaborate just yet. Life’s to short to sell out for corporate America. I know it’s cliche, but I have met people that gladly stepped back and out of certain careers that were just a horrible fit, and they are much happier. If you don’t stand for something, you stand for nothing.MegaMooseEsq wrote: »eleanorhawkins wrote: »@shanaber It's all about training. And owner attitude. Some dogs, like children, are more sociable/outgoing/boisterous or whatever than others. Not an excuse. Trouble is some people don't care, or are just plain clueless. This guy was walking a dog that is of a size that requires a muzzle to be loose in public here without even a collar on. Also, this was on a trail with massive signs at each banning dogs from being allowed to run loose on it as it's a nesting area. So no respect for the rest of the human race or nature either.
@MegaMooseEsq my situation is similar to yours (work from home, very long hours at the desk) and I find pilates/yoga-type stuff essential for my back. As long as I keep that up I'm fine, but as soon as I miss a couple of days, I find I can't turn over in bed at night without squealing. Well done on resisting the trying to run and see urge, that isn't easy even when you know it makes sense!
@Avidkeo how are you feeling?
About the Garmin. Firstly, @Elise4270 you have a heart that is bigger than you but no way could I accept that! I currently have a fitbit (he doesn't know how much that cost either! gotta love marriage sometimes) that is about a year old. When it dies, I will replace it with a Garmin. To this end, I am saving up every bit of loose change he leaves in his pockets, change from groceries, etc etc. I could have afforded to get myself one with a little bit of money my great-aunt left me when she died. But I spent it on tickets to the Bon Jovi concert in Madrid next month. And a hotel room there, and train tickets to get there. I've been waiting 25 years to see Bon Jovi in concert. And it's almost here! 3 weeks and 2 days to go!!!! Not that I'm counting!!!! Can you tell I'm excited, much? lol
No run for me today. Friday is my rest day. Plus I have to get to the city to pick up my T-shirt and number for tomorrow night's race. Feeling a little more confident I can finish under the cutoff time now, not sure my legs will approve of me doing so though. Oh well.
Hey, I've got an old Garmin 620, totally functional, lying around gathering dust. It's yours if you want it, just pm me an address.
Send me a PM and I’ll chip in on shipping! No sense letting a perfectly functional Garmin gather dust when it could have a loving home. Think of the poor, lonely Garmin, @eleanorhawkins!
I’ve got a paypal account, I could chip in too if I can remember how it works... “help! I need a teenager!” Haha.
I love this group. Everyone gets a Garmin and we all move to Spain. Make room @eleanorhawkins , mfp is coming over. 😉 dh has been wanting to really buckle down on his Spanish. He speaks to me in Spanish, I reply in German. Haha!
If we are chipping in to send @eleanorhawkins a garmin, let me know! I've received some incredible generosity from people here and I want to pay it forward! Won't be much but every little helps.
I love the idea of a commune in Spain, I visited Malaga and Seville about 10 years ago and LOVED it. And I can do everyone's xrays! Haha
Everyone is still recovering. We've changed our moving schedule slightly, doesn't look like we are leaving till Wednesday now. That's OK, can handle that. I think its finally hit hubby, he kept breaking down crying yesterday while packing. I get that. This was our first home. Our kids learned to crawl, walk etc here. So many memories. It still hasn't really hit me yet. I think it will as we leave.
So it's Monday, more packing, moving of big furniture into storage, fridge is being sold today, fortunately we don't have to clean much as we did that for the open homes!7 -
I'm here.. I'm late to the party but I made it! Have been recovering from a rolled ankle and pulled my knee cap off track but I'm back to running 5k so just happy I'm back at it!
I've got 103km up for June.. Hoping to make it past 200km for the month!8 -

Real Goals: Get back to running regularly without injuring myself.
Today's [and this week's] notes – Today has been a good day, after a frustrating week. I let go of tracking this thread (missed 128 messages) in a funk of wondering if I'd ever be able to run like I used to. What happened:
Wednesday evening I went to a 3 mile group run. I wanted 5 miles, so I added a mile out and back along the Genesee Riverway trail. Right at 3 miles, I notice the river was quite pretty, so I stopped to take upstream and downstream pictures to show you guys. Pictures didn't get posted till now:
So I'm running along, having a wonderful time wrapping up the run and congratulating myself on having the discipline to do an out and back holding the route to 5 miles instead of running to the next bridge that turned out would push the distance to over 6 miles, maybe close to 7. And at 4.4 miles, I get an ache in a part of my thigh that I've never injured before (and thus don't know the correct anatomical term for). No, not really an ache. More of a "Stop Running NOW!" pain. So I slowed to a walk. Picked up to a jog to get across the next intersection when traffic paused for me, and it hurt. Bad. Oh, *kitten*.
I think the hurt part is part of the groin. It was very odd. Didn't bother me at all walking. None of my routine stretches hit that part directly, though a couple seemed to touch it if I was sloppy about them. Next morning, I couldn't even jog the hallway while my eggs cooked. So the extra rest day would have been mandatory even if I didn't decide on it before I walked out the rest of the Wednesday route.
Friday I honored the normal rest day. The hurt spot let me do the egg-timing jog, but I could still feel it.
Saturday morning I went to a group run. It had loops of 5, 3, and 3 miles. The plan was to run 5 miles and call it good. A bit over 2 miles in, that same spot twinged. I stopped running immediately and walked back to base, crossing paths with slower pace groups as they headed out, and being passed by faster pace groups as I got close. The only good news was that I was able to run across intersections with no pain. So I got as much sleep as I could last night, and hoped for the best.
This morning I could feel the spot as I jogged the hall while my eggs cooked. It wasn't bad; but it seemed like the kind of thing that could go out on me in the middle of a run, without warning. So I drove off to the race site, thinking to limit my warmup so as to delay the possible injury. Got there, and had another thought. Decided to do a course preview warmup, as I would if I were healthy. Then if the groin went out, I'd be okay walking back to start and taking a DNS.
Turned out I could run 3 easy miles without a problem. Didn't get a full 5K in the warmup, because I mis-remembered the course and cut some distance; but it was close enough to line up and start. And there's a racing story here.
My club has a new member in my age group. I'd been working on getting him to join since I met him at this race 2 years ago, and he joined this week. He asked what I'd run; I said I didn't think I had a sub-20 5K in me, I might struggle to break 21 minutes, and I could end up walking at any point due to injury. He's trying to break 21 minutes, so he said he'd pace off me. I coached him to line up forward, since it's gun time. Make sure that everyone he's behind is someone he knows is faster than he is.
And the gun goes off. He leaves me behind instead of pacing off me. I take a few paces of trying to keep up, feel the groin, and back off to what my body will tolerate. Lose sight of him for a while. At the one mile flag, I hear the announcer call out 6:30 when I'm one step from his position. That's a slow first mile of a 5K for me, but right about where I should be with the pre-injury plan of running the race at T pace or a little faster. And I see our new club member in the distance. I pass him perhaps 1.5 miles into the race, and tell him now it's all endurance. Hold a fairly steady pace most of the rest of the way, and manage a bit of a kick late.
I end up running the race in 20:19. If I were in true racing condition, I'd expect to be below 20 minutes for this course in good weather. For the condition I'm really in, this is 30 to 40 seconds faster than the best I had thought possible today. And the worst would have been walking more than a mile to finish the race.
The groin faded into obscurity somewhere between a half mile and a mile out. From there on, it was simply managing pace and cardio. I wasn't wiped out like I would be from running a hard race, but it felt like I put forth reasonable effort. Call it running about 10K race pace for most of the 5K, with a modest kick at the end.
And nothing hurt. Did my stretches anyway. Went to my car, dried off, put on a dry shirt and hat, warmup pants, and a jacket. That felt better for standing around than shorts and singlet did. Turned out I won my age group. My new team mate came in second, at 20:58, and was delighted to break 21 minutes for a 5K for the first time. He ran the first mile in 6:15, which was too fast for him to go out; but he hung on enough to break 21 anyway. Third in the age group was another team mate.
No medal, but I got a $20 gift certificate to Medved, which I will probably use to defray part of the cost of a pair of running shorts.
And after the race, I feel great physically and much more optimistic about being able to return to regular running. Optimism notwithstanding, I will still honor the planned rest day tomorrow. Just because I'm optimistic doesn't mean I should be stupid.

I've been very busy packing for the move (this week!), so didn't get a lot of miles in this week. Today was no exception - only half as many miles as I would have liked. Part of it was because I was tired, but also part of it is because I could have made the time to put in the miles I wanted and had another issue. I was struggling to keep BG up and I always carry glucose tablets, but was taking way more than I normally do and still struggling to keep BG at a safe level. I was almost out of glucose tablets and decided to go home while I could. I don't think I would have been able to get to the 15 miles I wanted without running out of glucose tablets and still going low / possibly needing outside assistance (probably someone would have noticed me since I was at the park and called an ambulance or something).
Anyway, I ended up with 7.56 miles. My ticker is on the computer that is now packed up, so imagine it here:
55.48 miles completed / 80 miles goal8 -
Yesterday I had a nice time running around a lake a couple times. It was a little bit shorter than I wanted, so I added some out and backs on side trails to end up with an even 20k. Stopped a couple times to check in with my family as they were out on a paddle boat or swimming.
Then we had a birthday party at the campsite and went to the speedway for some races. Fun stuff.
I feel better about next week's race, as I hadn't had a run this long in a while. Slow but steady and I should be fine
June goal 100 miles
Upcoming races:
June 22: Rockwood Rotary HM (rail trail between Rockwood & Garrett, PA)9 -
Back from my week in Detroit—my colleague and I rocked the 5K on Wednesday, and had a great time. Two days later she even asked when we were going to run next, so I think she’s hooked! We tried to go on one more run, but got caught in too much traffic and didn’t have time. Then I got home on Saturday morning, ran two super easy miles in the afternoon, and then 8 beautiful ones today. I’m super beat from the intensity of the work trip, but it’s been so good to keep up some runs in there. A week from today I’ll be on a plane again to New Zealand, and I’m hoping the jet lag is manageable for both working and running there...

I had a really nice 10 mile run today. It was a little warmer than it was earlier in the week, but not as hot as I expected it to be. I got up early so I could beat the heat and I'm glad I got the run done early. I've never been a morning person, but I really like getting my run done early. We had some thunderstorms this afternoon too, so I was especially glad I ran earlier.
I hope all of you dad's had a Happy Father's Day!
@rheddmobile Happy belated birthday. Sounds like you had a great!
Congrats to all of you who raced this weekend!

Rained all morning yesterday and was almost not hot in the afternoon. Garmin says it was 23 degrees. Plan wanted 12km, but I somehow missed a turn and ended up with 10.5, and was too lazy to do some laps of the block to make it up. My legs wanted to go faster but my lung capacity did not. Made for a funny zigzag pattern in pace that looked like bad interval training. But I had a blast.11 -
Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes!
3.1 miles down the wagon trail, around Cox park, then back to WC Johnson, just at sunset. In fact the last half of this run was mostly in the dark, which isn’t ideal since you aren’t legally allowed to be on the wagon trail after dark (true of most trails here.) Not to mention that the pavement is buckled due to roots so that it’s very uneven, and it’s not safe to run it without being able to see. Should have gotten out earlier, but my husband was spending time with his dad.
Anyway there were a couple of benefits of getting out so late! WC Johnson’s boardwalk is open until 11 so we took our post run walk there, and we saw a zillion lightning bugs, and an armadillo! Contrary to popular perception, armadillos do not spawn dead at the side of the road, they are sometimes alive! This is only the second live one I’ve ever seen. And armadillos can run and leap about like crazy it turns out. We seem to have scared this one and he took off, then realized he had no idea where he was headed and started acting crazy to try to throw us off the trail. I had read previously that frightened armadillos leap straight up in the air as a defense against predators, but never seen it. That’s one of the reasons they are so poorly suited to crossing roads - if a car passes over a dillo, it will jump straight up into the undercarriage.
The park was so full of daddies and their children when we arrived that it was impossible to park, and completely empty when we left. I hope all the fathers here on the running thread had a lovely day!
And I want to offer a hug to anyone else who is like me and spent the day missing their own father. I was thinking of mine during the days after his stroke, when he was still in rehab and very confused from vascular dementia. He told me he was worried about something, that in the morning the staff were taking him down the hall for vocational therapy. “But I don’t know what vocation they expect me to learn,” he said. “Who is going to hire me?” He was deeply concerned that he wouldn’t be able to provide for his family. At this point he was 82 and had been retired for a dozen years. I told him not to worry, that he had taken care of us all his life and it was time for us to take care of him. But he never did stop trying to figure out how to get back to taking care of everyone, it wasn’t in his nature. My father was not a demonstrative man at all, he rarely hugged or said “I love you,” and his way of showing love was to work hard for his family, both at his job and in ways such as household repairs, giving good advice, and teaching skills. He also thought Father’s day was very silly and a waste of money. I miss him a lot!13 -

@rheddmobile happy belated birthday, I swear my computer doesn't show me all the posts on this thread, I think I read everything but then someone refers to something I haven't noticed. Either that or this perimenopause lark is totally addling my brain!
@polskagirl01 if you decide to run something here let me know, I'll come cheer you on at the very least!
@Avidkeo hugs... it will be tough leaving the place your family started behind but remember you're about to start on a new stage of your family's future and you'll be creating some incredible new memories there soon. About the Garmin, @noblsheep has offered to send me her old one which is so amazingly generous I'm all kinds of tearful about it!
@MobyCarp great to hear you bounced back, I'm in awe of your time for that race, I couldn't do that that fast on perfectly healthy legs, let alone injured!
I found some official rankings for Saturday's race online. They have my time down as 1:04:56. I'll definitely take it as a PR even if the course may have been a little short. I came in 169th out of 178 women, and there were also 9 men who finished behind me. Not at all bad considering my aim was to finish under the 1:15:00 cut-off time even if I was the last one in! Legs are tired and a bit sulky still, but not as bad as I thought they would be. Maybe I'll come down off the high and manage to get some work done soon.

@rheddmobile – Happy Belated Birthday! What a great way to enjoy your day!
@simcon1 – Glad you got to run in Detroit. The last marathon I did (and probably the last I will ever do) was in Detroit. I don’t think I ever would have chosen to visit Detroit otherwise but I ended up really enjoying the city!
Congratulations @eleanorhawkins, @katharmonic and @mobycarp on your races. Loved reading all the race reports. (Hope I didn't miss anyone.)
@lazy_Bones_85 – Yes, I think burnout from running is very normal. Not only is taking a few days off good for your mind, but it’s good for your body as well, especially if you aren’t in the middle of training for a big race. If you are in the middle of a training cycle, try to limit the number of days off and just power through your scheduled runs. Some runs you feel great. Others suck. But you will feel better after powering through them!
Beautiful full moon on this morning’s run. 68F and 98% humidity made it a real sweat fest.

Yes, I'm sure I miss posts too!
Happy Belated Birthday @rheddmobile!
@MobyCarp such a great race after coming back from injury! You are such an inspiration.
6.2 miles this morning. Nothing great, but had all negative splits.

Was off work last week but still managed a few gym sessions and a run. Also got to the gym this morning despite only managing about 5 hours sleep. Feels good to get back in to a sort of routine!5

Thank you @shanaber and @Teresa502!
@rheddmobile happy belated birthday! Love the nature encounters - you are a disney princess! Awesome job on the Sally push-up challenge, way to go! I love your birthday goals. And hugs for missing your dad, he sounds like a great man. I miss mine too, who had a lot of similar traits, and I get a little smile imagining what he would think about my running and obstacle races. He would have gotten a kick out of it.
@shanaber great river pics! Glad your legs were feeling better. It definitely puts it into perspective when you think about what others are facing.
@eleanorhawkins congrats on your 10k! Awesome!
@MobyCarp great job on your race and glad your sore spot held up okay! Nice pics of the river.
@midwesterner85 good luck with your move!
@simcon1 great job on your 5k last week - and yay to getting a friend hooked!
@Lazy_Bones_85 I think that's totally normal to feel like you just need to rest for a bit, even if nothing is actively wrong. I try to just take one rest day and then maybe really easy short runs (even just 15 minutes) for a couple of days when it feels like this, just to maintain the habit but give myself a break.
Hope I'm all caught up, sorry if I missed any races/events.
I volunteered at the Spartan race yesterday and it was such a fun experience. I will definitely do that again. I was at the first obstacle on the course, which was a 5-ft (I think) wall. Pretty easy for most people, although a lot get a boost from a friend (or stranger). So I didn't have much "coaching" to do, just encouraging them for getting up the first hill (most of the way, I didn't point out there was still a bit to go before the top) and defeating the first obstacle. It was fun to see the "backstage" of the race a little. The elite and age group heats were a little boring, as they all ran through pretty fast and I had several minutes of nothing to do before the next heat (every 15 minutes). But the open heats were more fun as the racers were spread out an I got to talk to and encourage more people. There was even one woman who arrived at the wall completely hating the race already and she broke into tears and said she was quitting. The guy she was with and I spent several minutes trying to encourage her to just try it. I told her that she would feel absolutely amazing if she did this thing, no matter how long it takes, and it was just getting her head over the wall more than her body. And then she did it - with no boost, all by herself. It was the best moment. The guy mouthed "thank you" to me as they took off. I really hope she finished and did feel amazing.
The results for the race showed I was in the top 25% in my age group, and of all our team of 16 from the gym, I had the fastest time (along with the two people I was with, edging them out by a couple of seconds). Now, this is not really fair, because the team ran in small groups and waited for and helped each other so it's not like everyone was running their own race for time. But still. I was second oldest on the team, and held my own with all of them including those two I ran with who are almost half my age. So excited.eleanorhawkins wrote: »Maybe I'll come down off the high and manage to get some work done soon.

That's so awesome!
I found a compromise to the high/slacking off issue... I work for 10 minutes then let myself have a couple of minutes of excitement then work for another 10 minutes... etc. etc. etc.
Not helped by the fact I just got an email offering me the chance to pay now for parking for the Bon Jovi concert. Not relevant as I'm taking the train to Madrid, but it reminded me LESS THAN 3 WEEKS TO GO.
