This 5k is the big finale for the local road race series and all the fast people show up - last year I don’t think I was even in the top half of my age group. So no real chance of a podium finish, the only person I need to beat is me. Last year I honestly thought I might pass out during the race due to the heat - the hair on my arms was standing up and I was getting goosebumps, which is a sign that your heat regulation is starting to get whack. This year so far I have been acclimating much better. But pushing it in the afternoon heat I still end up with positive splits - my legs, heart and lungs could keep going if my radiator worked better! I need giant ears like a Fennec Fox!
Anyway we did bring it in at 29 minutes with the first mile under 9 and pace gradually dropping after that. And I feel like maybe if I got one of those ice things that sit on your back we could have done the whole thing in 9 minute pace. Has anyone had experience with running with any of those ice hats, ice neck wraps, etc.?
By the way, I checked the weather history after we got home and the dewpoint when we ran was as high as I’ve ever seen it here - 78. No wonder I was wringing wet. Temperature 97.
We saw yet another bunny, which makes four runs in a row of seeing bunnies. This one was sitting right on the path watching us go by without a care. And we rescued a huge millipede from being run over by a bicycle. And listened to some song sparrows. Oh - and I looked up the unusual owl call we heard on our last run. Turns out it was Barred Owls after all, but the song we heard is their courting duet! They make a crazy cackling noise. If anyone is interested, the Cornell bird site has tons of stuff about owls.
https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Barred_Owl/sounds
Wow. That sounds pretty miserable.
I know @PastorVincent shared another site about dew point, but I came across this one recently that includes the temperature as well. Basically, it says to add them together and use that to determine your pace adjustment.
http://maximumperformancerunning.blogspot.com/2013/07/temperature-dew-point.html
The chart provided:
100 or less: no pace adjustment
101 to 110: 0% to 0.5% pace adjustment
111 to 120: 0.5% to 1.0% pace adjustment
121 to 130: 1.0% to 2.0% pace adjustment
131 to 140: 2.0% to 3.0% pace adjustment
141 to 150: 3.0% to 4.5% pace adjustment
151 to 160: 4.5% to 6.0% pace adjustment
161 to 170: 6.0% to 8.0% pace adjustment
171 to 180: 8.0% to 10.0% pace adjustment
Above 180: hard running not recommended
I didn't get my lunchtime yoga yesterday; instead I chose to take a shorter lunch and leave a little early for a couple errands after work. Today is scheduled for 4.5 miles, but I'm deferring that to tomorrow in favor of a rest day. Three days in a row is pushing it for me right now, I think.4 -

That site is way too optimistic and dangerous for less experienced runners, IMO. Running "hard" in 100 degrees with even a 0 dewpoint is foolish, and with a 70F dew is straight up dangerous, but that chart says it is fine with minor adjustment to pace. I knew about that chart and did not quote it because it is not at all geared to the normal runner, if anyone.
I am not a doctor, but I bet if you went to one and said "Yeah, humidity is kinda high, and temp is like 100, but this chart says I can run with 6-8% adjustment. What do you think? Should I go do a hard work out?" - they be like "How about Netflix?"6 -

Bugs find me very attractive! I will be soaked in DEET at the very least but that does not stop the cloud from swarming around!2 -
The move has caused a major reduction in mileage and the de-training is already showing. I went out for a few miles yesterday. Pace was good, but it felt much tougher. I'm hoping to get a long run done this weekend. I'm signed up for the Tupelo Marathon on 9/1, so I really need to get some miles in.
ETA: Will update my ticker whenever I finally get internet at my new home.9 -

Just 2 miles done on the treadmill as a warm-up today. I slept horribly last night and did not get to the gym early enough to do more. And I had to keep kicking it up a notch to even get to 2. But that's fine, I predicted as much.
It was a big day for me for strength training though - I did my first unassisted FULL PULL-UP! Some of you may recall I've been talking about this as a goal for a while now, and it was on my goal list for 2019. So very excited!14 -

What ball team does he think I'm on? There is no way I look like a high schooler.) Overall it really was a good run, though! Exactly what I needed.
I got a new bike(!) on Saturday and am trying to get back into cycling shape, which meant I missed yesterday's run because an 18-minute ride on the hills around here wiped me out. It's true - you can't just say, "I can run for __ hours, so I should be able to cycle/swim/etc. for an hour no problem". It just doesn't work that way!
June goal 100 miles - almost there!
Where’s a pic of the new bike?!!

June goal: 90 miles
6/2: 8.51 miles
6/4: 5.52 miles
6/5: 5.26 miles
6/6: 5.51 miles
6/9: 10.05 miles

6/19: 5.10 miles
6/20: 6.03 miles
6/23: 9.26 miles
6/25: 6.22 miles
6/26: 5.05 miles
6/27: 6.21 miles
104.68/90 miles completed
I ran 6.21 miles this morning. The temperature was 72F, the humidity was 95% and the dew point was 71. Yesterday the temp was 71F, humidity 88% and dew point 68. So the weather was nicer yesterday, but today's run was so much easier. I'm really surprised that a cup of coffee before a run made such a difference. My run this morning was really good. It was mostly uneventful, but nice. I played Zombies Run and I outran the zombies. I did see one dog that barked at me, but he didn't chase after me. It was awfully hot and I was very sweaty, but I still enjoyed it. Plus I had new shoes so that was good. I had a little issue at the beginning because I have a mosquito bite on my food and it was itching as I started out, but I guess I got used to it. Other than that my feet felt fine. And not only did I exceed my goal for June, I exceeded 100 miles.
@quilteryoyo I think that between the day are and ushering the baseball game you have your exercise for the day taken care of.
2019 races:
2/2/19: Catch the Groundhog Half Marathon - PR 2:15:17
5/18/19: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - Cancelled due to weather5 -
I would like to redesign the app to remove/ change the Done button so it will post my replies if I'm in the middle of one.
@PastorVincent I thought we were saying basically the same thing, with a different perspective or I would not have tagged you in my previous post. Thanks for being clear on your opinion. I disagree with some of your response but that's just my opinion.
Cross training for 30 minutes on the indoor bike done. Hopefully I can fit in yoga later.3 -
I officially started my HM training plan on Monday. My HM isn't until early November, but with trips and a week of flex in case I get sick or hurt, it's time to start. I'm enjoying a low mileage week! My husband and daughter are both out of town (visiting a friend and SUMMER CAMP!! respectively) so I am enjoying having the house to myself. Shorter runs = more time to chill alone at the house! I love being alone and it just never happens anymore, so this has been heavenly.
I also got to run outside yesterday. Super exciting! We've had storms rolling through the last several days and the timing worked out where I was perfectly between 2 bands of rain and the sun was covered by clouds. With a little breeze. It was downright pleasant, which is hard to come by in Houston at the end of June.
I read back through some of the posts I missed and I must say, cats are crazy!! I have 2 and they are always into something. Luckily no snake bites for us though!

I agree with the PRINCIPLE of the chart and would have liked to have quoted it, but the values are too optimistic and not at all suited to most runners. But I am not a trained coach, nor doctor and my opinion is based solely on my experience and the experiences of those I interact with or follow.
Running is a highly personalized sport so values always need to be fuzzy at best anyways It is all good. Not everyone agrees with me on all things. Like Ketchup on hotdogs.

This reminds me of the time one of my two grabbed and gobbled down 3 of my mom's pills - I believe they were calcium, some kind of supplement like glucosamine condroitin perhaps, and a prescription cholesterol pill! I was at work at the time, my mom panicked, brought him to the vet, they had to call animal poison control (which is when we learned that you have to pay for an animal poison control phone call - $59), and in the end he ended up being totally fine with no ill effects. Other than the freaking panic attacks he gave me and my mom

First two days of marathon training plan down! Tues was hot and humid, Wed was slightly hotter but half the humidity, so was more comfortable. I'm already sick of summer! Rest day today, another 3 miles tomorrow, gonna walk all over the Bronx Zoo again on Sat (yay new annual pass!), and 6 on Sun, which will bring me to my June goal! Yay!

@Squish815 - I had some problems with the Strava app and they recommended that I make sure I had the latest version of the app. I did but the problem went away anyways So you could send in a problem report and/or make sure you have the latest version of the app.0

I'm finding it relatively easy to get back in to a running/gym routine, but less easy to remember to check/post on the forum!
The only downside has been my Strava app playing up on my last 2 runs outside. It could be the GPS dropping out but I've run the same route many times without issues. Looks fine when I hit the 'finish' button then I get a completely different set of data - It's making it difficult to keep track of miles/pace. I might have to switch to a new app just to make my life easier.
Do you close the app during your run? I found it pauses the gps. And if your phone has a setting where it times out and closes apps could be an issue. If not like @shanaber said, sent them a report. Good luck!0 -

For what it’s worth I also think the chart is overly optimistic. It seems accurate at the lower temperatures, but not at the high end - high humidity and 100 degrees is just unsafe for runners who aren’t used to it, and takes way more than 10% off my times compared to 50 degrees and low humidity.1 -

Hot dogs themselves are yuck enough without adding ketchup to the mix... after which, it may not be safe for human consumption.4

@PastorVincent I think that is one that I have looked at before. You took some really awesome pictures with it. Thanks for the information.
@polskagirl01 Why would basketball player be the first thing that came to his mind when he saw you running? That's not the first thing I think of. Maybe I'm weird. Looks like you have some pretty scenery, despite the buzzards.
@shanaber That is so cool that your hawks are back. What kind are they?
@katharmonic Yeah! Congratulations on doing an unassisted pull-up. You've been working hard for that!!
@kgirlhart Love the new shoes! Sounds like you had a great run today.
I got home from work early today, so did a one mile walk and then spent 2 hours mowing the lawn. Plenty of exercise for me today.4 -

Today's notes – Training program kickoff session was at 6 PM. Getting across town to just about anywhere between 5 and 6 is a study in traffic frustration, but this location is worse than some others where I go to run at 6. So I went early, and got a 3 mile pre-run in before the program started. Did the pre-run too fast, tricked by starting downhill; it was closer to MP than easy. Also, it was 84° F (29° C) and the humidity was no longer subtle. I think the dew point was 59° F. Tolerable, but also noticeable. Of course, I got drenched in sweat.
As expected, the program leader had me lead the group on the "warmup" run over to the office park loop where we do the time trial. I was rather proud of holding myself to a 9 minute average (okay, 8:59) pace so people could keep up. And I felt better about that non-exercise 0.86 mile, having done the pre-run.
The plan was to run the 2 miles at interval pace, or about 5K race pace. It was warm and humid enough that I couldn't hold 5K race pace for 2 miles; I had slowed to about 6:35 per mile by the time I was told I ran 2 miles in 12:58. Then I ran a loop retro to cheer runners, and got confused about where I was. Had to walk a while to achieve mental clarity and know where I'd left my hydration belt with water and my phone. Turned out my "easy" retro loop was at an average pace of 7:09. No wonder I was whipped before running a second retro loop!
For the cool down back to the store, I took the long way around and got a full mile. Didn't look behind me, so I don't know whether others followed me the long way or went the short way; after a hard speed run and some time standing around, what felt like easy was a reasonable 7:55 per mile. Probably the one part of the evening where my pace was about what it should be.
I skipped the orientation (I've heard that speech several times), and came home to push a pill down my cat's throat. I have pilled cats before, but not this cat; so I didn't know what to expect. She didn't like it, but didn't give me much trouble. She's still a bit subdued after yesterday's dental ordeal. I haven't seen her jump up into any of the usual places, and when I see her resting it's typically on the floor or under the couch now.
Gratuitous picture of resting kitty under the cut:
Scheduled rest day tomorrow. 5-ish mile trail race Saturday, which (with warmup) should put me over the nominal mileage goal for June.

@polskagirl01 Love the bike! Beware of the fella. I’m always afraid they are “basement” types that strike up random conversations.
@MobyCarp Cats and pills don’t go well. My males are quick to put every claw in to you. But one will actually take capsules if you just put them on his plate. We are doing 2 liquid antibiotics twice a day... better than a pill that’s for sure. Hope your kitty is back to normal soon. Our females tend to hold grudges, so... maybe a special treat? New toy? She’s a pretty kitty!
I sure miss running with everyone...4
