Count me in for a tribute run too - I didn't sleep well last night just thinking about @mobycarp and a life ended too soon. I've been scouring the web for local events to honour him on November 3rd but it may be easier to do my usual Sunday long run by myself.3

I have been awol for months due to ....stuff, but am always lurking and "liking" and "hugging".....and am deeply saddened by the loss of "our" MobyCarp and would be honored to participate in a memorial relay.8

I will definitely participate. I don't have anything scheduled yet, but Sunday's are my usual long run day so I will likely be running by myself that day.0 -

I’ll participate for sure on th tribute run. I’m still thinking of him, and what a loss it is.2

out of curiousity. where did he get his name from. mobycarp, not kevin
I don't know either, but being curious, I searched the MFP forums re "Mobycarp", didn't find anything specific to his user name. That said, saw a few interesting threads from his posts and replies.
Glad he chose to stick around per his original quote from one of his first notes of "I may or may not stick around; if I do, it will likely be for an active running community" He certainly made it active both physically and virtually. FYI - this from 9/2015 and in some of the links (not posted), I saw many of you that are still making this an active community as well!

My final post (I am way over my quota for 2019)
I just received this email from Strava. They are awarding 5 free NYC marathons for 2019. Based on the T&C's and the eligibility requirements, it is for US residents only and they are really gearing it towards 1st time marathoners and those that have a 1000 word or less compelling story might be selected
SO - my idea is this
1) Anyone from MFP looking to run their first NYC Marathon??
2) if yes, I know each of us has a story, but a collective story and perhaps one around this community including @MobyCarp and many others, etc might compel a winning entry over all of the others that might be just as powerful on why people chose to run.
3) I am not a content creator, only the idea maker.....so perhaps if there is someone that wants to run their first marathon and as a group project, the group could craft an inspirational essay that just outshines the best.

Come to kerikeri for the half on the 17th. Running together we will do a marathon for Kevin, 2 weeks late lol
Oh you already have something that day I think.
I've just discovered that the taranaki around the mountain relay is that weekend. I'd already decided I was keen to do it. Now I KNOW I'm going to. I'll try put a couple of stages together to hopefully do a full marathon that day.4 -

Damn not a US resident. This is awesome, hopefully someone here can get it0 -
I haven't been as active in these threads lately, but like so many others, I have to express my sadness over the news of @MobyCarp, a truly great runner who offered invaluable advice to all, no matter their level of ability. I dedicated my run to him this morning as a tribute, and as I ran, I thought about the nuggets of wisdom that have stuck with me:
- train in all weather, because you can't predict what it will be like on race day
- change your shoes at the recommended mileage, because new shoes are far cheaper than a physical therapist
- you don't need an egg timer to cook eggs if you have a hallway to run up and down in

I was just going to say the same thing when I saw the email from Strava in my inbox!
What an awesome tribute that would be!4 -
Ran outside again this afternoon. I just wasn't in the mood for the treadmill. We are getting bands of rain every few hours but it was pretty clear when I got off work, so I decided to suck it up and run outside. I was glad I did it. Not sure if I am up for long runs outside, but I am enjoying these shorter ones.

So I met with the trainer to talk about my Anti-T-Rex plan, and she told me she uses this app called "Tranerize" to put plans, track progress and stuff like that. Well, when you set up an account it asks you questions about your goals and what not. How does this sound (it is a free text field):

You know I can never cook eggs without thinking of him trotting up and down his hall way.6 -
The Strava thing is absolutely wonderful, if I didn't live on the wrong continent I would so be all over that.
Soooo come on, who's going to put their name down? I'm happy to try and pull the text together if nobody else wants to, though I think there are some better writers than me in the group.

I remember the question of how we came up with our username was done once as the question of the month?? but I can't remember what year/month we did that in. Did any of my fellow Long Timers in this group keep a link to that string??
I Like the Virtual NYC Marathon concept, I pouched the Time Zone translation badly last year for Dennis Ley (KeepRunningFatboy) so will try to do better this time.
My next event is mid August - Emperor's Challenge - ~ HM Trail Run over a mountain and will have MC and WWKD somewhere on my shirt or Bib.6 -
I have the spreadsheet ready to go and will try to get it into GoogleDocs tomorrow and I will set up a separate thread like @orphia did for @KeepRunningFatboy (Dennis). I did the spreadsheet based on EST and would love someone to check it for me; we can move the start of the 24 hour period up or down if it would make it easier for everyone in their time zones... @eleanorhawkins if you can track those who mentioned wanting to participate we can check to see who hasn't signed up later in October and tag them or send them a message to see if they are still in.
Also I sent Kevin's daughter a message on FB with a link to our challenge here in case she wants to read some of our messages. I am sure she is feeling completely at odds and I don't expect a reply anytime soon if at all.
@elise4270 - keep that head down and studying - we've got your back here! I will ping @kevaasen if I need help with the GoogleDocs part.
@kevaasen - I did enter that NYC Marathon Strava contest. I have never run a marathon but I have run 24 (25 in September) HMs since I started running 6 years ago. I also talked a little bit about @MobyCarp and what it would mean to me to run it in his honor.
@juliet3455 - I remember the question but I don't remember when we had it...10 -
Finally getting my mileage caught up here and seeing that I am a bit behind after several missed days for travel and then the dog bite yesterday. Thank you all for the well wishes with it. It seems to be healing but is still pretty sore and bleeding more than I expected. The injection site for the tetanus shot is also really really sore. It may make strength training tomorrow interesting. I have been stretching and moving my arm hoping that would help. I ran today and my leg was ok. Mostly I was worried it would start bleeding a lot but it was fine.
In other news the Animal Control officer came to see me today. Apparently it is a state requirement with any significant dog bite that the medical facility file a report. They seemed to know the dog even though I didn't give them the address or the people's name since I didn't have that information. DH saw a different officer at their house when I was at agility class and I am hoping they didn't take the dog away. Honestly he isn't a bad dog, just a typical Jack Russell terrier and I feel like he really, really needs training.

@mobycarp's daughter posted this to the newsfeed tonight. Thought I would repost here for those of you who were not 'friends' with him:
"My apologies, I was unsure of the best way to easily reach this community that meant so much to my father.
Dad passed away doing what he loved on Saturday, July 13th. If anyone is interested in further details, look up “Kevin Clinefelter” on Facebook. Any post I have tagged Dad in is visible to the public, so you can see further information, including the last photo taken of dad, taken roughly 90 minutes before his time of death at mile 9 of the Shoreline Half Marathon. He looks happy and healthy at mile 9 of the Shoreline Half Marathon. He tapped himself out and got the help he needed before passing suddenly from heart failure.
Life is fragile and uncertain. Tell your loved ones how you feel about them. Take care of yourself, properly hydrate for races. Stay safe and healthy out there, and most important of all: Do what you love and have fun.
Take care of each other. Dad loved you all ❤️

The start time of my HM that date has yet to be announced, but I imagine it will be around this time of day and a quick google just told me it's 3.15am in NYC right now. So I imagine, depending on our NZ ladies and possible @noblsheep if she wants to take part, I'll either be starting it off or at least taking a couple of the early slots.
Sure, count me in. I'd be glad to take a slot or two when all those people in North America are asleep.7 -
@shanaber that's me shedding tears as well. How like @MobyCarp to stop when he knew he was feeling bad - how many of us would even recognise that and just keep trying to push through? I guess his goal of 'stay healthy' just wasn't enough for him this time
Count me in for the relay @eleanorhawkins as part of a UK contingent to help cover some of those US sleepy hours. It worked well last time. Still can't believe we've lost another core member of the team - stay well everyone else!!!7 -
@eleanorhawkins I just checked my calendar and although I may be doing the 5k instead if my ankle doesn’t improve by then, I have a half marathon planned for Nov 2nd, which makes running on the 3rd a no go for me. However I’d like to participate in some way! Last year we ended up running our half the day before Dennis’s relay and there were enough kiwis and such in weird time zones that it ended up connecting to the relay anyway.3
-
@girlinahat oh yes, sorry I had forgotten you were this side of the world! Noted!
@rheddmobile I vaguely remember the one for Dennis turned into 30 hours or something, I expect that will happen with this one too! All this time zones, time travel stuff that means (from my perspective) the Australians etc are in tomorrow but the Americans are in yesterday makes it even more interesting.
1 -
Count me in for at least 2-3 hours worth for the relay (if I don't win the Strava NYC contest 😋)6

I, too, haven't been posting here on the threads (moved, school, trying to get my own routine & rhythm back) for a while. I've still been running & working out, posting to Nike & Strava. Then I started seeing several people posing about "Kevin", RIP. Sad.
It wasn't until I decided to lurk today that I realized exactly WHO he was! Now I'm in shock, for sure! My thoughts and positivity goes out to his family during this time. He was truly a friend to all and his words of wisdom will carry on. He will be missed by us all.
Run on, Kevin (aka Mobycarp).7
