Things people say when you lose weight

"you have no bum now" or "you look gaunt"...yeah but Im squatting like buggery and chasing abs dear.
PS I do Crossfit haha.9 -
For me, the worst comments are the ones I don't hear. My mom is so focused on appearances for women, and I remember all the remarks she made about my sister's diet. So she is likely saying the same things about me now. I won't tell her what I weigh because she will announce it to the whole church, and larger family, and probably the grocery store too. Sad because I could use her support.

When I dropped from a size 18 to a size 2, I felt terribly uncomfortable and was told I looked sickly. I agreed though. I put on a bit too much. Now back on track I finally feel more comfortable in my skin and don't honestly hear the comments people make I just want to help others7

My favorite is when people double take at me just to be sure that I'm still me. That's my favorite.
The one that gets me the most is when someone asks "what happened to you....you going through some life or you trying to lose weight on purpose?"9 -

I’ve lost around 41 pounds since February with the help of MFP, calorie counting and some cardio now and again. My starting weight was 184lbs. In the beginning, family told me I was doing great but now I’m getting comments such as “You’ll need to watch what you’re doing, you’re losing a LOT of weight” and “You’re getting skinny, you need to stop now”
I’m far from skinny at 5”5 and 143lbs. Yes, I’ve lost a significant amount of weight and I do look slimmer but I’m definitely not skinny. I’m also in the healthy weight range of the BMI chart. If I’m seen eating a piece of chocolate or crisps, the same relatives will say Ohh, you shouldn’t be eating that, should you? 🙄
I feel like I can’t win. One minute they tell me I should stop losing weight and the next, they tell me I shouldn’t be eating certain things if I’m trying to lose weight 🤷♀️ Talk about a mindf*#ck!
Envy?5 -
A very well meaning friend of 40 years asked me how I stayed so slender. It was a compliment and we were about to sit down to a delicious meal that she had cooked. So I just said "I don't eat very much" (I don't) and left it at that. I felt that it wasn't an appropriate moment to talk about MFP etc.12

When you are at a family event, and decide to either eat at maintenance/don't log for the day and everyone is so obsessed over what you are eating. "I thought you were on a diet???" or the looks when you go for seconds.
In the back of my mind I'm thinking just shutup and relax, it's one day aka no difference in the long run xD.16 -
My husband told me he had trouble finding me in line at a store because he couldn’t recognize me from behind lol
I guess it sneaked up on him.
Don’t like when people ask how much weight I’ve lost. I know not to ask that...11 -
My husband and I both recently lost weight. Friends and family always made comments about his weight loss and how great he looked (-25 lbs) and no one commented about me at all (-15lbs). I’m very proud of him, but jealous for sure!25
-
"Well now I'm going to be the only fat person at work. Thanks."
"Your personality is different now." (Said with tone)
"What pills are you taking? No one loses that much weight without pills or surgery."
"You leave things on your plate because you want people to notice you're not eating."
"You look sick, now."
"Of course you won't eat that. There is no point me even asking."
Basically, if I wasn't so stubborn, I think the comments I got would have broken me. I did get positive comments from my family and close friends. But sadly the negative ones are the ones I remember.43 -

I don't need to lose weight and tell me I'll look 'ill'
'you must be super healthy' because I go to the gym every day. I'm not, that's why I am doing it
I did like, 'where's the other half of you?'3 -
How about what the DON'T say? Oh, I would just looooove to have your lose skin!7

Oh God. There’s something new every day.
My supervisor asking how I’m losing so much weight, after I’d explained CICO and counted her day’s calories for her/done the math on how many she would need a day to feesibly lose up to ten pounds in a month, digging into a bag of Doritos and cracking open a cherry Pepsi... then continuing to say “I just can’t lose weight no matter what I do.” Week after week after week since then.
There are good things too. Our boss seeing me after being on vacation for a week and going “Geez, you’re like half of the person I used to know!” With a huge smile.
Other coworkers asking how I do it and actually listening to the advice and managing to lose, then thanking me for the help.
Same supervisor as before, when someone else asked me what I’d lost (this was a few pounds ago, though, I’ve lost 66 now) and I’d said “58 pounds”, in a very snotty tone said “You have not.” Yes... because my scale, that always stays in the same place, and that I always measure on in the nude, is definitely lying and even though all of my clothes are several sizes too large on me I’m definitely wrong here.
One of my coworkers/friends has an eating disorder, and when another of our friends asked me about it that same supervisor butted in and said “How can she have an eating disorder, she’s not anorexic thin. I thought she was gaining weight.” Yes, because everyone knows when you develop an eating disorder in the 200’s that you most definitely turn instantly sickly thin. Not to mention how rude it is to hear two people talking in hushed tones as to not include you in a personal, concerned discussion, and walk over and insert yourself in it.13 -

Exactly. We're always consciously or unconsciously tracking anyhow. Unlike the commentators who are unable to wrap their head around calorie deficit/how the math works out.4 -

I get the the "you need to stop now" sentiment all the time. I'm trying to slow down but I still have probably close to 10 pounds to go, but everyone has opinions.9 -

And it does not stop either. I haven't lost anything over the last 2 years Been steady in maintenance. Yet my parents are convinced I am still loosing and that I am, and I quote "crashing my body due to too much exercise"
Now for sure my body has changed over the last year and a half as I have become a decent runner and with weight training. My GP is most impressed by my body stats as I score in the athletic range.
Sad to say I come from a naturally lazy background. Een my husband was commenting on it last time we were there how lazy my family is5 -

Two years in maintenance is great! I'm starting to figure out the balance I'd like between running and weight training. I've done almost no weight training. I've just started going to the gym 1-2 days a week. I'm usually running 5 days a week2 -
I lost almost 38kg's over the last 10 months. All the comments I received have been encouraging and great to the ego to hear. During the last few weeks, 3 women (different days) approached me. 2 Complimented me on my weight loss, telling me that I am inspiring. The 3rd lady asked me "Are you aware that you lost a lot of weight?" I couldn't help but to smile and answered, yes I am aware of it. I didn't add that I have been working my butt of (literally and figureratively). But it was still appreciated.4

I was at a planning meeting for a dive trip, and I ran into some folks I hadn't seen in a year. I got to the shop early to transact some business, and there was one fellow there that's been on the trip several times. I caught myself asking if he'd lost some weight because he looked better. I didn't "catch" myself until it was out of my mouth. He said yes, and I told him it showed, and he looked better. He smiled and said about 21 down and 50 to go. It was actually nice to make the connection.
The guy I drove down with also was there. He looked like he had lost some weight, but I didn't say anything. During the meeting, someone suggested that if some folks had lost a bit of weight, and especially if they are going to be diving with a drysuit, to make sure their neck seals are still the right size. This person raise his hand when the announcement was made, so I figured it would be ok to breach the topic at the end of the meeting. Again, it was a nice way to connect with someone I know but don't see often. He also had lost about 20. He's using another app that I won't mention because it's a violation of the terms of service to mention other weight loss apps here I told him I'm using MFP.
I had brought my drysuit in to get a new neck seal proactively. It probably would be good for another 25 dives or more (I don't plan to do more than 24 dives on this trip), but a blown seal on the boat is not a fun thing (reminds me of a joke; ask me on my profile). It can be repaired, but the glue takes a day to dry -- no diving without exposure protection! Anyway, the woman who had made the comment about neck seals for people who lost weight made a point to ask what size I was getting. I told her, and she was concerned, so I tried on the size I thought I needed. The guy who does work on drysuits said it was PLENTY tight, and even after stretching, might need some trimming. I hate trimming my neck seals, so I'll just leave it as-is. And it's the right size. But it was nice to hear from folks who noticed my change over the last couple years.
None of the comments -- mine or others -- were taken with any other context than they were offered. I think we're all happy for each other. Being a healthy weight supports so many other aspects of life. Diving is an activity where many of the participants are overweight or more. Some WAY more. Part of that, I think, is that once in the water, you are neutrally buoyant. I can only imagine how great that must feel if you are carrying 50 or 100 pounds more than your frame wants to support. Still -- the health implications of being overweight put divers at risk of medical issues at depth, and nobody wants that. It's actually good to see the dive industry taking notice and encouraging divers to get healthy and stay healthy. And I think everyone in the conversations at the meeting were glad to hear others noticed. Smiles all around!21 -
My friends/coworkers will tell me in one moment how well I'm doing, and in the next tell me that I need to "splurge now and again." If I splurged half as often as they told me to, I'd be back where I was. I'm going to just keep on going, and save the splurges for when I REALLY need/want them.15

I was having a medical procedure recently and the doc asked me of any eating/dietary or weight changes that i had noticed. I said "Yes, I've lost 34 lbs!" He said "Deliberately ? and why?". To which I replied, "Well I was too fat". Followed by "I talk a lot when I am nervous". The doc smiled, and said well done.....then carried out the procedure. I am also well aware of my resting HR due to fitbit - the monitor was showing a very elevated HR due to nerves - I told the doc that too. He must have thought I was mad :-)5

@Deanner03 -- I'll tell you too: you should splurge now and then. It's good for the psyche. But yeah, not all the time! It looks like you've been on your journey for a while, so you already know this, and you certainly allow yourself a splurge from time to time. Way to go!7

I totally do it from time to time. They say this almost every day! They mean well, but they're killing me!4 -
@Deanner03 Splurge or Cheat Meals all amount to the same thing in my estimation. Cheat Meals can lead to cheat weeks and cheat months. It can all come undone. People will say...you don't want to get too skinny now but that's mostly just blowback. Not everyone has our best interests at heart, I've learned that along the way. Some are even secretly saying it won't belong before she eats it all back. You know they've never been able to stick with anything for very long.
No one has to live in our body and I refuse to let them. Let all of it roll off like water off a duck's back and keep tooling along.9 -

I agree with this wholeheartedly. I'm ALREADY hearing "you're going to be too skinny." Yeah...I have a good 30lbs to lose before I hit a "normal" BMI. Then I hear "but you have a large frame!" No, I don't. It's normal sized. I've seen it on x-ray. I just let it roll. I think MOST people actually mean well, but I know my own body.10 -
Just smile, say "Thanks! Great idea. Guess what? I do splurge from time to time." Then keep doing what you're already successful at.
I don't think saying, "Yeah, and maybe you shouldn't splurge so often" would help other folks "get it."
I posted a recent splurge in another thread. I'll repeat it here because I enjoyed it SO MUCH. I love many of the food vendors at Oregon Country Fair, and even though I can't try them ALL (and frankly, I never bother with some of them), I can try to maximize my indulgence:- Eggs Benedict
- Eggs Florentine
- Veggie Scramble with potatoes
- Liege waffle with sunny-side up egg, bacon, and Vermont maple syrup
- Two dinners of wonderful vegetarian Indian food including some fried veggies
- Slab of ham
- Knish, knish, and more knish
- Sushi, sushi, and more sushi
- Ravioli
- Humus, tabbouleh, and lamb with tzatziki
- Chocolate chip cookie
- Baklava
- Avocado dreamboat (stuffed avo)
- El Burrito
- Momos
- Gumbo
- Part of a gluten-free cupcake
- etcetera!
Burp.8 -
I have lost about 16 pounds, not much but not a word from any one. I am happy with the loss.22

I get that -- it wasn't until I hit the 50 lb mark that I started getting a few comments at the office. I figured by that time nobody was going to say anything, which was fine by me. (And when they asked me "how much have you lost" I didn't give a number, I just said "a lot.")
