Going out of town in a few days to visit family. Planning to pick up some healthy breakfast ideas. Am concerned about dinners at restaurants. Pre-checked the menus & I’m going to need to be creative. Maybe order a salad with chicken or fish? Dressing on the side?
Do you all have any thoughts on this?

Many restaurants will give you simple things not on the menu, like a vegetable plate or a simpler preparation of meat/fish. Ask politely, the worst that can happen is they'll say "no".
I've been vegetarian for 45 years, so I've asked for modifications often, especially years back when vegetarian items on menus were less common.3 -
My sister does plant based, no oils & on a recent cruise, she asked about this. They "bent over backwards", lol, to accomodate her wishes. Her food looked better than what was on the menu, lol.1

Welcome to the group all the new peeps! There is no right or wrong way to get healthy as long as you're making progress by doing what works for you. Generally, cutting back on calories, making better choices for the calories you're consuming, exercising a bit more and being consistent and dedicated to whatever plan you come up with will get you where you need to be health wise.
As we get older, exercise becomes even more important than it was when we were younger. As we age we automatically lose muscle mass so anything you can do to prevent, or even reverse that loss (yes it is possible), will be to your benefit.
Walking, swimming, running, and a bit of resistance training about 6 to 9 hours a week can make a world of difference in your mobility, ability to bounce back from injuries, as well as overall health markers.
I nearly died in 2012 from a very weird set of worst case circumstances and in 2013 I took charge of my health and reversed every single thing that was wrong with me...................and I haven't looked back. Believe me, if I can do it, so can you!
Stay dedicated to your health!8 -
Turned 64 this year and I feel pretty good. Run three days a week with some resistance training (weights/kettlebells/etc) twice per week. Trying to lose about 8lbs of fat to get in the "zone". Good to see so many getting at it!7

I had no clue yesterday when I wrote this that I would live the words this morning LOL. I totally tripped on my way into the gym and landed completely spread eagle on the ground. My left knee and right wrist and thumb broke my fall but neither of them broke. I honestly credit the work I do at the gym as well as hiking and swimming with my ability to bounce back. I even went on and got a decent workout in. I'm sore but not broken. A lot of women my age (69) are just one fall away from a wheelchair or hip surgery.
I might just be lucky but I like to think I'm also prepared...................

I haven't yet, but had a couple of "near misses". Frankly, I am terrified of falling despite my exercising; terrified over how falls might affect or damage the implanted hips! Hope I don't find out anytime soon.1 -
@geraldaltman, yes be careful with those new hips. I've always been an accident waiting to happen and honestly, I'm always shocked when I fall.............LOL
My family nicknamed me Grace for a reason I guess.2 -

I hear you. As a boy, I drew a less graceful nickname..."un-co-ordinated plus". I had a tendacy to trip when there was nothing visible nearby to trip over, 🤣2 -

LOL, I didn't see anything to trip over this morning other than my own two feet............so embarrassing!0 -
Today I had to take my client to her Dr's appt for lab follow up. This is the 4th wednesday in a row for Dr's, ugh. anyway, I usually take her to Starbucks after so the last few times I've been eating lunch there. Their food is good & fairly low cal. I had a little bit of Tilapia fish for breakfast (I know) & a chicken panini at Starbucks. It filled me up. Normally I don't like eating out at all & try to avoid it but their food seems to agree with me1

I trip a LOT and for a long time any trip landed me face down on a scraped knee. Sometimes I land with my arms tucked under me and my nose just above the ground! Since doing water aerobics my balance has improved and reflexes too. I still trip a lot on cracks in the sidewalk or over my own feet?? but I don't fall as much. I find that I trip usually if I am trying to hurry or just trying to walk faster and my one foot drags.1 -
@pacsnc6, I think I'm pretty lucky that I didn't hurt myself worse yesterday. I trip a lot too but generally have good enough reflexes that I don't actually fall. Yesterday totally freaked me out and I even remember thinking on the way down that I might be in trouble..............LOL
You're right we probably just need to slow down our pace and pay attention to where we're going!0 -

Right there with you!
I was walking down the dock after rowing not quite two weeks ago, tripped on a warped board, and did the full-body equivalent of a face-plant, landing hard mostly on my lower jaw and ribcage. The only difference from your account was that I don't remember thinking anything on the way down, it was so quick. Gouged a chunk out of my inside lip on one of my teeth, internally-bruised the bejeepers out of my ribcage (still hurts), and felt profoundly grateful that - as a woman already diagnosed osteopenic - that nothing actual seems to have broken. Whew!
Also glad I wasn't carrying a boat or oars at the time!
Now being much more careful . . . .4 -

Doesn't involve tripping, though I probably did! As a boy we played ballgames (and other activities) in a large field behind our house. It was rectangular right field was about 100 feet away from home and left field about 980! One time a "pop-up" fly ball was hit my way--I GOT! I GOT IT!! I scream. I got it alright...right between the eyes! Broke my glasses and cut my nose. Guess who was sent to "deep" left field next time he was allowed to play? 🤣2

@AnnPT77 thank goodness it wasn't any worse. I guess we just need to keep our head down when we walk lol, but then we'll probably walk into a post or something............uggghhh. Hope the rib cage improves.
I work with a trainer occasionally, he's a former Marine and I've worked with him off and on since 2014. He's also a Physical Therapist and is in nursing school so fairly knowledgeable about many physical issues. When I told him I fell he pulled me aside from my normal workout today and gave me some balance and mobility exercises to incorporate into my work at the gym. Many of them I can also do at home and in the pool...............I think he has a point. I'm quite strong but I'm still not as sure footed as I was when I was younger.
@geraldaltman I remember those kind of experiences as a kid too. I nearly ripped one of my toes off riding my bike barefooted..............LOL And I was great at climbing trees but terrified to come down.
Let's all make a pact...............no more falls, let's be more aware of our surroundings and try not to do anything stupid!
Have a great weekend everyone!

Mine are usually because I trip over the cats or the dogs either pull me over or knock me over but I still love them even though I have a bad hip knee and back now.0 -

Those that have counted calories before, do you find you become more disciplined and more aware of what your eating.
It’s so easy on Slimming World to eat so much, and I never lose the weight and keep it of?
Diane
Hi, I'm 53 and have doing slimming world all my adult life on and off but got a lightbulb moment recently that it actually doesn't work long term as the only way to lose or maintain is to be in calorific deficit. You are never going to be able to eat the same as Betty who is sat next to you in class and lose the same amount of weight as every ones baseline is different. learn your own baseline and adjust it accordingly using calories.. no such thing as points/syns in food.. only calories2 -

I find single leg exercises like kettlebell deadlifts and split squats helpful for improving balance. Thanks for the reminder, @fitlulu4150 - I need to put those back in the regular rotation.

@alteredsteve175, good idea! I think I'll add some single leg work back in. I'm getting over a hip issue so I need to do that anyway!
@Nayghtymuffin & @barbarajane22. I've never tried Slimming World but did try Nutri-System about 35 years ago and the weight just fell off but as soon as I stopped the weight came right back on. I discovered that I really didn't learn anything about healthy eating because they did all the work for me.
I've kept 50 lbs off for 5 years and even a little more than that off and on. I tend to gain up to 10 lbs from time to time and then have to crack down again to get it off. Counting calories, exercise and making sure that I have a well rounded and satisfying diet is what finally worked for me.
Good luck on your journey!2 -
I'm glad I'm not the only one who falls. I'm so sorry for your falls. I got ran into by dogs running several times. Gotten 2 severe injuries, first one to my knee,2n'd broken wrist, although that didn't hurt, the sprained wrist is the one that hurt. I've also fallen flat on my face due to a piece of pavement sticking up from the ground, ugh. I also got hit by a car & thrown off my bike on my way to riding my bike to work & landed on my injured knee & got bruised ribs. What has changed for me is I always walk around next to the fence at the dog park so don't get a chance to visit much with other ppl there, only when it's safe, which isn't often. After I got hit off my bicycle from a car from a side street, I couldn't drive on the freeway anymore, too freaked out by fast moving vehicles on sides of me & can barely travel with someone else driving on freeway so I just don't travel anymore, too stressful6

Oh dear how awful, I have always been nervous on the road cycling and with my bad knee don't do it anymore. Usually it's my own pets that cause me to fall lol.1 -

I would add that person as a friend on MFP. add friends on MFP:
1) Click on the username in the left sidebar. A window showing the username will open.
2) Click on the username again. The user's profile will open.
3) Click on the "Add Friend" button on the user's profile page. There is an option to send a message along with the request. That's always a good idea - just a short note mentioning where you saw the user, some common interests or goals, etc.2 -

How's everyone's Sunday going? I work on week ends, only couple hours on Saturday & about 3.5 hrs on Sunday. Sunday's I take my client grocery shopping then church so it's mostly driving & being out. I do get tired of going out so if I ever get a different client I'm getting one where I stay put & clean & I go out alone for groceries. I haven't lost any more weight. Some days I do well, some not so much. It's mostly with exercising that I lose weight with since I end up eating at maintenance or a small deficit. I just can't eat only a little over 1200 cal/day in order to lose. Also I noticed since my last B day in March, I don't have all the stamina I used to before. I do 2 step classes a week which include weights every so many minutes but since I've been baby sitting 2yr old grand son, I haven't been going extra to the gym after I'm done with him. I'm not giving up- every day I plan to eat no more than 1300 cal, but I get too hungry. The long hot summer is coming to an end so maybe I'll do better without all this heat because I spend as little time in kitchen as possible. We don't eat or order out but I don't take the time to plan my meals as I do during the cooler weather. Today I bought the 3lb pk of ground turkey I usually did. I make 9 patties out of it for me & husband, freeze some & have it with veggies or add a slice of bread cut in half for a burger. They're very filling .3
-
Busy!! Burned some yard clippings, painted in a bedroom, did laundry, paid the bills, I'm done!!!5
-
@Evamutt I find ground turkey filling as well and I enjoy the fact that it's almost like having a hamburger.....but what I find even better is lean chicken breast. We cook chicken breasts about 3 or 4 times a week for dinner and then we can add them to a salad or sandwich for lunch during the week.3
