Hello one and all.
This is one busy place. I have been enjoying reading about everyone's days and challenges. You all seem so supportive of each other.
Kindle - you do not have to have Amazon Prime to get free books from Amazon. I am an avid reader too (approximately 100 books a year - mostly novels). If one searches under Kindle Books >>> Best Sellers and More >>> Kindle Best Sellers one will find the Top 100 Paid and Top 100 Free. Some under the "free" section cost a dollar or two. There are many Indie writers and some are actually quite good. And, many times when a middling writer is getting ready to release a book one or two older ones are listed. Many of the classics can be found too.
The weather is simply beautiful today in SoFlo. We will have a high in the mid-80's today - after days upon days in the 90's it is a wonderful break. It's starting to feel like fall.
Husbands/Partners - yes, relationships can be challenging. Mine was a bit of a hypochondriac and would go to the doctor quite frequently. The one thing I asked him to do is to get his shortness of breath looked at - he blew me off time and again (yes, like many of you I gave up the nagging). That said, the night before he passed, he was in NJ taking care of his mother's estate, I begged him to go to the hospital (I was in SoFlo). He said he was tired and he was looking forward to coming home. We set up a morning call and when he did not answer my heart dropped. I ran home from work and called his relatives to check on him. He passed sometime that evening. That was a little over 10 years ago. Partners of stubborn partners - kick them in the ___ and drag them them to those doctor's appointments, if needed.
That said, I do believe when our time is up - it is up. Who knows he could have gone to the hospital, had a massive heart attack/stroke and been in a coma for years or worse. I do miss him and talk to him all of the time.
It's time to get 30 minutes of walking in before getting ready for work. I hope all of you have a wonderful day!
PS: Hit my September goal a little earlier than I expected. Down 12 pounds from late August. Looking forward to seeing the 170-range in October (it has been 2 years!). I am very happy I found MFP and decided it was time to make the needed changes. I truly want an active retirement (it's right around the corner).10 -
Good Morning, I am a 65 year old female new to this group. I am hoping to lose 29 pounds and lower both my cholesterol and triglycerides. I tend to be quite sedentary so I hope with this group I will get the motivation to move. I do great all day but the minute I walk in my house from work at night I eat anything in sight. Look forward to being part of this group.6

@natc1954.
I am new to the group too. Welcome.
Congratulations on your decision to lose the extra pounds. I, too, need to get back to healthy.
You may not be eating enough calories during the day. I sometimes find myself hungry as soon as I get home too. I usually plan out my meals and have been making sure I have some healthy snacks for when I walk in the door. I usually have some prepped fruits and veges for those times. I also try to make sure I have some light proteins available.
Dehydration can also appear as hunger. I have been making sure I drink a minimum of 6 cups of water during the workday - sometimes more. I carry around a 27 oz refillable bottle. My daily goal is to drink a full bottle before noon and another before I leave to come home.
Do not be too hard on yourself. Set up some mini goals and you will see the pounds will start to drop off.
Hope you have a good day.
PS: I was a couch potato too (I started my journey late August). I started by stepping in place during commercials and stepping in place while I was doing household chores such as folding laundry. These were some of the mini goals I set for myself. Within a week or two I found longer walks were much easier and now am walking a minimum of 30 minutes 4-5 times a week.
PSS: You can do this!4 -
Successful day yesterday... not sure why I was cranky and out of sorts earlier in the week.
To catch up on subjects:
Husbands--Can't get mine to go to the doctor either, but like most of you, can't make him do it, short of Tracey's frying pan upside the head, so I try not to stress. As I'm older than he is, I'm assuming he's just leveling the playing field a bit. That sounds facetious, but it's oddly reassuring.
Books--Have almost completely swapped over to e-books. My Kindle paperwhite is so old and slow that I've almost given up on it, and pretty much read on my Kindle Fire these days. I probably read two or three books on my non-busy work weeks, and a fair split between fiction and non-fiction. I occasionally pick up hardbacks at sales, but not many, and it takes me weeks to find the time and daylight to read them.
Bras--I wear the Genie bras, and most have lasted me around ten years... and are hard to find now at my usual shopping venue (Wally World). Need a few new ones, but will have to order them. As they're $20 for a three-pack at Amazon, it's not too bad. Effectively, they're a sports bra - no metal anywhere, and straps in the normal places. Racerbacks always make me feel like someone's trying to strangle me from behind every moment that I have them on.
Off to the gym, kiddos... Over the last eight weeks, I've only had one week where I didn't make it at least five days, and I still made it four that week. I'm sleeping seven hours a night most nights now, which makes me even happier. The days I don't go to the gym, I feel out of sorts and clunky/clumsy. Pleased with my progress there.
Welcome to those who are new, join in where it feels right.
Later, y'all,

I'm sitting here on the bed with my hair dye on my roots. Another 15 mins to go. Yesterday I did my nails, but I am saving the actual toe polish until next week. Slowly getting the body, clothes, toiletries, medicines sorted for the cruise.
I wanted my hair blonde for this weekend's lunch birthday party. Don't want to be a grey old lady!
Hope to go for a run after lunch. It's very sunny out, so I'm hoping it's not too hot. DH will walk beside me. Great to have him back.
Welcome new women! I started my fitness journey very slowly and lost weight at a snail's pace. But I developed good habits on the way and most of it, barring a few pounds, has stayed off. I don't have a secret, it's pure CICO and a largely Mediterranean diet. My biggest achievement was lowering my stubborn BP, although I still take a small dose of medication. I have got to the state where I do a lot of exercise, which enables me to eat happily without denying myself, but it has taken 7 years to reach this equilibrium. Most people do not have the time to burn 900 exercise calories a day. Some days I wonder myself why I do it, but I enjoy food and the whole culture associated with it, so I have chosen this lifestyle as the best option. I also love feeling fit! It just makes life in general so much easier and happier.
OK. Nearly time to wash my hair dye off.

@ginnytez my classmate friend had it partly removed but now has to have it all removed. sometimes I had thought of going back to liven the usa for retirement or other but the health insurance situation makes such a question not so easy. I think I could go only for a few months of a year taking out insurance or seeing about reciprocity agreements.1

I went to the gym for 1st time in 1 month or so!
15 minutes on bicycle and about 20 on weight training w arms and abs. arms need strengthening big time but I'm going super-slow (minimum weight lifted or moved and if 10 reps hurts, I cut it back to6 or 5 or 3 as needed) since last time it hurt my shoulder for several days. slow and steady
cooking veggies for 1st time In many many many days.

Welcome to the new ladies!
Just dropping in for a minute. Managed another day of no added sugar. Scale is bouncing around, but saw a few lower numbers I haven't seen in a while.
I always check my bank account in the morning. Just a habit I got into after my account was hacked a few years back. This morning I'm showing a $4000.00 deposit ... which neither I nor my husband made. So off to the bank this morning. Hoping it's just a bank error and not another case of someone having access to my account numbers. Don't mind deposits but pretty sure there's a withdrawal coming...

I made it to work! By lunchtime, my energy was dying off. I went for a short walk in the sunshine hoping to get some energy back but it didn't help. I really wanted to go home!! My plan was to come in, run 2 reports, load a set of data, and escape by about 1 pm.
However, work was very busy and complicated. I couldn't run one report until the early afternoon. And from the time I got in, there was a steady stream of emails about another issue. I finally got what I wanted to do done at 4:30 pm and I was dragging ... so I dashed out the door before another issue cropped up.
Got home and napped for 1.5 hours.
I'll try it again tomorrow! But I'm so glad tomorrow is Friday.

Happy Thursday, Supermodels!
Tracey - Sorry to hear about Rodger going to the ER after the wedding. Yep, men! (Loved the wedding photos by the way!! ) I was going to mention cast iron frying pan in my spoiler post yesterday but was trying to be kind and introspective, lol. I am no saint about dealing with him. I had to find a way of letting go of worrying about his health as it was affecting MY health. Guess it hit home with my recent surgery and some pre-op tests that were abnormal but not abnormal enough to not go under the knife.
Hey, supper last night was a hit. The package of chicken thighs I pulled out of the freezer turned out to be chicken breasts which DH likes better anyhow. Carrots and new potatoes were yummy, and he grabbed a can of cranberry sauce to go with it.
RVRita - how is your DH doing? Wow, how neat to be right there with those Pecos sunflowers. Lovely photos!
Kate - Welcome back home. The good thing about gaining weight quickly is that you'll lose it quickly, IMHO. Anyhow, works that way for me. Glad to hear you've signed up for the new brain series.
Margaret - thank you for posting the museum information and the photos. Fascinating to get a glimpse of their tools and lives from what - 2 centuries ago? Don't know how many of us could pick up and make a new home on the prairies and wilderness, really, like they did. They sure didn't have to worry about calories and weight-watching. Shame about that mailbox being broken into. Hope they had CCTV on it and catch the culprit. From now on I'm going inside the Post Office when I need to mail something important instead of depositing it into the blue boxes - thank you for the heads up!
Rebecca - thanks for your wise words about wife/caregiver roles. I value your insight a lot You've been through so much with Lee.
Allie - Taliah is just lovely!! I'll bet you 2 have a lot of fun together. Sweet little Chester.... such a hard decision for Tom. I think it's almost harder for guys to let go of their pets, at least the ones I know. I've generally been the one to say it's time and take them to the Vet. DH did once, many years ago, and was so frazzled he tore out of the place without paying the bill.
Katla - how was the visit to your niece's new home? So glad your DH is feeling better and going to yoga class. Hey you have a plane trip coming up shortly! Started packing yet?
Heather - you'll soon be on your trip as well. No one will believe you are 70!! They'll think you stole that shirt from someone decades older! Those Christmas balls are gorgeous. Isn't it fun to come upon the perfect thing like that - and at a good price too?
Rho - I'd almost rather go to the dentist for a crown prep than have to deal with car woes... they are both at the absolute bottom of my list. Very stressful! Sorry to hear about the tow woes. Say that five times fast, lol. Glad BF's procedure went well and got your derm visit in. Crossing fingers the lesion is nothing. Hooray for getting the walking in and lower fats!
Karen in VA - not sure I could foster a cat like Enzo. He'd be at our house to stay. Thanks for the allergy/rash info, by the way. Normally I have no reaction to band-aids or tape of any kind (I tape my toes at time with sport tape) or iodine products. Have even used Duct Tape to remove a wart and it worked! Stress and other factors likely contributed.
Julie - good for you heading back to the gym.
Barbara AHMOD - let us know how that Better Bones class is. I see a similar one offered at the college here. You know, Joe's MD might give him better insight on his eye situation, and MAYBE he'll be more prone to listen! With the right stimulus, they go from "No" to "Maybe" to "OK" pretty fast. Tracey's frying pan, lol.
Going to the new Master Gardener demo garden to see what's up at 9 and start some planning with the MG gal who oversees that area. Not rainy this morning but quite chilly so will dig out my winter stuff. Then off to lunch with my 2 MG gal pals. One of them has started a sugar busters type class offered by the local college, I think she's in detox right now so very interested to hear about it and how its going. Always anxious to pick up tips!
I need to start a plan on getting back to strength training. Light and slow. Still a week or two away, I can tell pretty quickly when I've done too much around here.
Barbie - any idea about how to get back on the horse? You've done so well after being sidelined, I know dancing is your main focus. Are you doing any weight bearing stuff?
Welcome all of you new gals! Please add your name or whatever you wish to be called and location to help us keep track of you, and on each post if you remember. Those of us who've been here a while know who everyone is but it takes us time to keep everyone straight, and it helps to have a name and idea of where you hale from.
OK, I've been at this masterpiece for over an hour. GACK! Enough.
Make it a fabulous day!!

Memories
A little snippet from my first year in Australia (2009), living in the cabin at the back of a property, off the grid ...
"walked into the dark toilet block, and shone my flashlight around ... up over toilet ... nothing there to drop on me; on the floor ... nothing crawling around; a quick scan of the walls ... nothing new or moving there; and a flash over the toiletpap......................... !!!!!!!!! A huge huntsman (we think) spider had the roll in its grasp!!"
My comments on the post:
This is a huntsman spider: https://farm3.static.flickr.com/2579/3660912595_9b10217c64.jpg
Only the one holding the toilet paper roll was fatter. They are, apparently harmless.
Most of the TP here in Australia is scented (ick, but what can you do?) ... we suspect this spider was attracted by the scent.
And my mother:
Maybe you can tame one and put it to work digging up your garden!!
I don't remember what the solution to that particular difficulty was ... I probably got a new roll and left that one to the huntsman.
Those were the days.

Changed and did a Personal Training with Jackie DVD since it was new and I wanted to see about it. Then I did a little of Kathy Smith’s Life Weights 2 Lose Weight DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to take the water class.
Barbie - I have both, too. Wish there were more nutrition books, tho. The one thing I don’t like about Hoopla is that you can only get 3 books per month. At least in Overdrive when you finish a book, you can send it back to the library and get another. The only limit is how many books you can take out at any one time. Fortunately, I have it linked where I can get books from NC and from our county in FL. It’s interesting, I have access to ALL books in NC but only the ones in my county in FL. Wish it was the entire state of FL
Rho – was the questionable lesion on your scalp under your hair? If so, how did they take the biopsy? I’ve always wondered that
Wii said that I lost .7 of that pound I put on from Rummikub. I’m getting there.
DebbieVA – happy birthday to your gs
SuziQ – I checked Amazon and they do have quite a few books. Now to figure out how to download them onto my tablet….. I’m so sorry about your hubby. Guess in one way it’s good that Vince will go to the MD for every little thing. Unfortunately, not me. I have to be REALLY sick. The hubby of a friend of mine was out in his garden. He felt funny so he called the paramedics. They couldn’t find anything wrong with him but they wanted to take him to the ER. He was changing out of his work clothes when he had a heart attack. The paramedics couldn’t revive him. They were right there! Like you said, when it’s your time, it’s your time.
Welcome everyone new!
Natc – lately I’ve been finding that when I’m hungry like late at night, having an apple fills me up.
Beth – I hope your account is safe, too
Green Room today. On the way back I think I’m going to stop at Food Lion to get chicken thighs which are on sale to grill for later next week. Many times the meats in stores are frozen so if I get it today, I can put it in the refrig and thaw it before it needs to marinate. Then, if Vince is working with his trains again, I will probably work on the popcorn. The positive is that it keeps me from eating. I do take some carrots and tomatoes out with me.
