I hate that! There isn't a lost-and-found nearby is there? I lost my driver's license on a run the other day and it was returned to the nearby university library...and they got it back to me.
Someone knows where it is, I hope
I ran 13 miles... some of it on roads, some on trial, some by a river... could be anywhere and I will not be out that way again till Wednesday, and thanks to DST it will be dark then. I will re-run the route though and see if I get lucky.4 -
Commitments for November:
1) Run at least 36 miles
2) Walk at least 36 miles
3) Finish the last 2 weeks of Active's C25K program
4) Finish the first 2 weeks of Active's 5K to 10K program

With this group I feel like I'm at a really cool party with nothing to talk about, being just a newbie still. I do have a race on the schedule, though. My first 5K will be on Dec 7. By that time I should have something to contribute... maybe? :-)
Being a newbie is the coolest though! You get to do everything for the first time! Every race is a new PR!
Seriously, there are probably people lurking right now who are even newer than you, considering starting c25k or working up the courage to run in public for the first time. You never know who you might be inspiring.
And for the experienced runners, seeing a new person having fun helps them remember why they got started in the first place.13 -

If I am attempting 15k next weekend should I consider taking some form of fuel with me?
For a 15km race, I wouldn't bother, however, it could be helpful to have a sugar hit around 10k to help you get to the finish line if you're starting to flag. That being said, they say nothing new on race day - gels are notorious for causing upset tummies. But if you're used to having something to snack on mid run, then go for it. Something inoffensive like jellybeans or dates could give you the boost you need without giving you a stomachache. You'll find the race probably has electrolyte drinks at the water stops which may be enough.
For me, if I eat carbs before starting, 10k without fuel is fine and 15k easy is fine but 15k at race pace would require something like a gummy (at around 10k as @ContraryMaryMary suggested) to keep me feeling my best. Different people are different though. What have you been doing in training?1 -
@7lenny7 Great race report. Your races always seem really interesting. So different from what I typically run
@Teresa5022 That race sounds very cool! Congrats on the course PR!3 -
@Teresa502 that course sounds beautiful! I didn’t know they had wild ponies in the Smokies, I wonder how they get on with the bears.
@7lenny7 Dude I almost missed my run because I got stuck reading your race report and forgot sunset was an hour earlier. Great job as usual! Love all the photos, you’re very photogenic when running.
I got 5k in at Shelby Farms, but ran the hilly trails instead of the flat Greenline because I am tired of being a wuss. Yesterday I woke up with my nose completely stopped up and mild fatigue, and I was worried that running today would be a bad idea, but it seems to have made me feel better. We saw deer, buffalo, coots, red winged blackbirds, and a great variety of good doggies and their owners. Tried to push the pace a little since we have been running a lot of slow miles lately, and honestly our pace was not great for the effort. It seems like adding more mileage makes me slower before it makes me faster.8 -
I did 5 miles tonight. Had my "fastest" 5k with my new watch which is basically my fastest 5k since I broke my leg. Seriously, how long do I get to use that as my measurement?
I even had doggo going pretty good. We had 14-minute miles for the first 2.10. I dropped her off and immediately got 2 minutes faster per mile.

@durhammfp your value to this group has ZERO to do with your mileage or your experience. I know how it feels. I came here several years ago as a total newbie as well.
Every runner, regardless of their current level started at the same place. You can't compare your chapter 1 with someone else's chapter 20.
I look forward to hearing about that 5k after you're done!12 -

@rheddmobile three short paragraphs, three great points.
You 2nd paragraph reminds me of what I did when I started running. I'd always get in my truck and drive to a park a few miles away because I was so self conscious that I didn't want our neighbors to see me running. And then when winter came and I started running in tights... I was glad it was usually dark when I ran, lol!
I'm glad you got your run in I'd feel bad otherwise. And of course I'd only post the best photos of me!8 -
@durhammfp You'll contribute more than you know. This group loves questions. You have any? Maybe gear, shoes, favorite ghosts, ideal distance, screw shoes...food... anything?
Almost running related:
I kicked the Nerf soccer ball in the yard for the snake charmer.
I got a short clip if it’ll ever get uploaded....
21 second clip. We played for probably 20-30 minutes... Maybe 10. IDK I have no concept of time now that I don't run. Kicked with the better leg. Not the sx one

Haha! Watch the video. My cat got snake bit twice. I don’t know if you were around or on hiatus. He’s also Mr Butterfly, because he love to eat them.0 -

To add to this... we're pretty running focused this week, but we also veer off sideways. It's a bit like channel surfing on TV... there's a lot of movement and some of it is weird and wonderful. Whatever you do, don't get them onto the topic of hotdogs! I've also remember something to do with smoking some sort of meat jerky or something....Commitments for November:

^^^so much this. I was completely in awe of everyone in this group when I first found it. They were all running crazy distances at crazy speeds and I was like "ok but I jogged 5 minutes without stopping". Yet, they all applaud everyone's efforts no matter what level they're at. The support from this group has got me through races, injury, self doubt.11 -

Thank you for the tips @rheddmobile @PastorVincent and @ContraryMaryMary
I took a snack bar on one of my 10 ks though I like the jelly bean idea and it sounds the perfect excuse to scoff a few Jelly Bellys which are my fave. As I haven't been back jogging long after a 25 year absence I haven't really established a pattern.
This also means I don't have a race pace. Every jog is the same pace or about the same and it is whatever my body tells me is right which tends to be 10 minutes per mile though I slow to 11 minutes after about 10k. My training plan has 'easy' and 'speed-test' so far, the difference between the two was a massive 6 seconds per mile.
For now I just want to get the mileage under my belt. I keep going a bit further to see if my body complains either during or after the jog and having done a couple of 12k distances so far so good. If I feel like I can't make a distance I will walk whatever is needed.
It is really odd having been a reasonable runner in my teens, then up to class 2 obese for many years, finding what I am capable of is a complete mystery right now.10 -
Quick question I found running 10k has caused me to have a skin tag any suggestions for stoppign this from happening?1

This community is full of awesomeness!
Still being super new to MFP community I am learning the ropes by reading, liking and loving your inspiring posts which are rapid and real! Love the fast pace of this community which is helping to rekindle the flame of the sport I love- Running.
So here goes my attempt to join the conversation. I hope to post more once I get more acclimated😇
November Goals
11/16 Complete VCU RVA Half Marathon
No time goal but only to Finish Strong
My running distance goals are still a work in progress as I’m hitting high mileages weekly but remembering from times past I would push myself too hard and increase volume and distance too quickly then get injured. Thus my goals are to just move mindfully daily while knowing my body is capable of so much more!
My stats from last week is up 3.59 miles at 39.90 miles. Can I say this will continue? I sure hope so lol.
There are several races for 2020 which I am slated for and lead for my organization.
For now I have the spring races on my radar. The one that is top of mind is the Shamrock Marathon which is the race I trained so hard for Boston many years ago. However, due to medical reasons and doctors orders I had to pass. Thus my 2020 Shamrock goal is to finish strong.
Thanks again Athletes for all the awesome inspiring posts to follow along and be motivated to become a better runner.

@Teresa502 sounds like a beautiful race to take part in! Bears and ponies are great to see in the wild, and closing the road off to traffic is very cool. Wish we had races like that here. Congrats on the pr as well!
@PastorVincent Oh I believe you about the lubricant! I know my boyfriend would as well, he's just a little immature! I hope you find your bottle, very annoying.
@durhammfp me too! But I just post when I can and learn so much from everyone else, so it's worth it for me. Good luck in your race!
I have a question which I'd love a few experts to weigh in on. I really want a gps watch as I don't like running with my phone, and my phone will measure the same route as up to 300m different on different days, so I really don't trust it. However, I think most gps watches are really ugly. I don't want a square one, and my wrist is small, so I need a relatively small one. I think I will wear it most of the time, as otherwise I will forget it, so I need to like how it looks, which means I want it to look like a traditional analogue watch except when I'm running. I really like the withings watches, but they aren't gps, only HR, with gps through your phone, so useless for me. I m tempted by the new garmin vivoactive 4s, which I think you've got, @avidkeo? Any feedback on it? Anyone else got something they could recommend? I know I'm being super picky!4 -

I have the Garmin Forerunner 935, which is one of the most expensive top of the line ones you can get (or was when I bought it) - I, of course, got it on sale for way cheaper than it costs, but that aside... it can do everything you list. There are analog faces for it and it looks like a normal watch. I would suspect any of the Garmin Forerunners would work for you really. At least from the 200 series up.
I HIGHLY SUGGEST you go to a store like Best Buy, Dicks Sporting Goods, or the like and physically seen and touch the watches if you can. Some are a lot bigger than they seem online. My 935 is HUGE on my wife's wrist but looks normal on mine.
Also, if you know a specific modle you are interested in drop by:
https://www.dcrainmaker.com
and read up on the watch. He has very detailed reviews on them. For example, here is the new Garmin 245:
https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2019/04/garmin-forerunner-245-music-gps-watch-in-depth-review.html
(which is a great middle of the pack option from what I hear, but not sure on how big it is)
And the Vivo Active 4:
https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2019/09/garmins-vivoactive-4-series-everything-you-need-to-know.html
With Google buying Fitbit, I would not jump on one of those watches right now. Google has a solid reputation for killing products, so I would take a wait and see on any Fitbit purchases right now.
Finally, Black Friday is comming and Garmin always seems to run big sales for it. Plan ahead, but I would wait for Black Friday before buying anything.5 -
@somum – Have you done the Richmond half before? My second full marathon (and PR) was there and I’ve also done the half marathon. One of my favorite race venues! The crowd support is super.
Thanks @JMNagain, @rheddmobile, @martaindale, @7lenny7, @Scott6255, @kirstymn, @TheMrWobbly, @PastorVincent for the kudos on my 10-mile race and course PR and to everyone who pressed the “like” button!
@TheMrWobbly – for my 10-mile race I had a Cliff bar for breakfast about an hour and a half before the race and then I fueled with a gu around the 6.5 mile mark. I typically run fasted during the week because I run before work and no time to let food digest but that is usually only 5 miles. I’ve found for my long runs on the weekend (10 – 14 miles), I need something to get me through those last few miles.
@Elise4270 – I can see why your baby bear took on the snakes. That ball is huge but he isn’t intimidated at all! He’s a cutie!
@rheddmobile – I didn’t know they had any wild ponies either. I’ve never seen them down there before. There’s another state park about an hour from my house (Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia) that is known for all the wild ponies roaming around and they also have bears in those mountains so I guess they manage somehow.
