Re: running fasted. I take metformin, which slows down the release of glucose from the liver, which makes you more likely to go hypoglycemic. So I always eat before and during runs. This summer I forgot my usual snack before a run and by mile 3 I was really dragging. Usually an orange before a run will keep me going for an hour and I start to want something by an hour and a half - so if I’m planning to be out that long I have a gummy at about an hour.2

Finally got a proper outdoor run in this morning. Fairly slow by my usual standards but I’m just not willing to risk a fall in the dark and wet! Anyway I’ve overshot my very unambiguous November goal and will just see how I feel injury and time-wise for the rest of the month..

*sigh*
So this is a new one for me. I packed my gym bag last night, and my son was heading outside so I asked him to stick the bag in my Jeep so I would not forget it in the morning.
This morning I drive into work thinking I had all things. After work, I went down to get my gym bag from the Jeep and it was not there. Any guesses where it was?
That's right the hall bathroom at home!
Apparently he stopped there on the way out the door and forgot about the bag.
Ah well... I guess I will hope on the dreadmill later since it will be sunset now before I can run and I do not like running the streets after dark. At work on the trails is not so bad, but the unlit streets are a different ball game.7 -

I live in an area where the streets are not well-lit too. During the week, I run at night. I don't mind it so much except that i don't think people can really see me that well and there are lots of places for people to lurk.0 -
Week 1 of 15 of HM training is in the books:
11.10: 5.0M Easy Run
11.11: 3.5M Easy Run (8.5) was short 1.5M
11.12: 5.0M Easy Run (13.5)
11.13: Scheduled Rest Day
11.14: 5.0M Easy Run (18.5)
11.15: 9.0M Long Run (27.5)
Week went as planned except Monday. I was away for work, slept like crap on Sunday thanks to a Diet Coke in that late evening, and I felt sort of light headed as I was running. Plus I had tummy troubles and I was in a small dirty hotel gym with a crappy treadmill. I had all I could do to make it from 3.15M to 3.5. Called it quits and went to take a shower. I figured that 3.5 was better than 0 and I was really feeling like 0 that night. Today’s 9 miler went better than expected since my longest run has been 5 miles in 3 weeks because I needed a training break after my 15K on Oct 19. Legs were tired but I never stopped or walked except to tie my shoe once. It was also raining hard and my feet got soaked. Looking forward to week 2.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone! I’ll be working all weekend but I’ll be wishing you all well in your races and long runs and Sunday brunches.4 -

Also happy Friday! Long run tomorrow - Id like to go seven miles.
I like the idea of a plant-based diet. It's not been easy moving that direction. Seeing more and more data on the health benefits and the economic cost of raising animals, land, resources, then the slaughtering of aminals is kind of off-putting. Other countries eat cat. I know my cats have enjoyable personalities (all but 1- wanna cat?). I hate the thought of my pet suffering in the least. I had a co-worker that had a cow that had learned to play kickball, er kick the ball for entertainment. It wasn't running bases or throwing other cows out. So, I think the older I get the more concerned I am about the choices I make that affect other living things. But, I just ate 3 beef tacos with cheese and sour cream. I have some improvements to make.
As far as the B12 goes, I take it anyway. As I've mentioned before, my body's a bit sluggish converting B's to the active form.
Running fasted. I think it's a good idea if you can do it, even once in a while. I think Stan mentioned it helped with the body being able to go to fat-burning mode (long runs) easier, like training your body to use fuel. I know from talking to some here the thought of going without is not even an option. While some have little to no issues going out fasted. I think the thought with lifting is that if you don't have the system primed to build, you are not building. I have no idea how accurate that is. I'd think the body stores up for lifting just as it would for running, but when I did go lift, I found creatine or BCAA's to be invaluable. So perhaps there is something to it.
I almost went for a walk today (first almost walk ever since surgery No. 4). Then I thought I'd lost my recorder that I was going to listen too on the walk. Then abandoned the walk because I have stuff on it I needed and now was going to have to find a way to study what I didn't have. Then I found it. I still haven't studied said material. But I play a mean auld lang syne on the violin now... ok it is fair. perhaps for the new year, I'll share it. perhaps.6 -
@Teresa502 I look forward to hearing about the race. I will put it on my list of races to look for next year.1

@Camaramandy648 Congrats on 20 min and 2 miles in 20 min is awesome
I ran outside today. Since I have no plan at the moment, I randomly decided to run .75 x 3 for a total of 2.25 miles ran (and 1 mile walking so 3.25 including that). I think the most I'd done outside was 2 miles so adding .25 sounded like a good idea. I'm not quite sure how to reconcile treadmill to outside. I know I've ran 20 min on the treadmill without stopping and I think I've ran 1.5 mile outside without stopping.
Anyway, I walked each dog a mile after that so that was 2 more miles walking, then I walked 1.75 mile with my hubby. So plenty of walking today.
Tomorrow my husband has to work so I think I'll run outside again bc on Sunday we'll go for a long walk most likely.
Oh, I also picked a hilly out and back route today instead of staying on the flat streets around my house.8 -
7 miles on dreadmill at 4% grade so 1400 or so feet. Hope to get outside and run a half at race pace, but weekend already filling up...6

RE: running fasted - I usually run first thing in the morning so I don't eat before I run. On weekdays my runs are short enough to not need any fuel, so I eat breakfast around 8am when I get to work. On Saturdays when I do my long runs I don't eat before I run, but if the run is longer than 21km I fuel with gels every 8-10km. By the time I finish my run and get cleaned up it's normally lunchtime before I eat any real food and I'm usually starving! When I run in the afternoon/evening if it's too soon after eating I feel sick or get a stitch, so my preference really is to run fasted5 -
Re running fasted.
I'm trying IF atm. And have done 2 runs fasted, neither felt great. My usual pattern for the last 1.5 years is to have just a banana before a short run, and a bowl of porridge)/oatmeal an hr before a long run.
Today I did a 6.44k run at 2pm and it felt really easy. I'm going to do some early runs over the next week that are all fasted. So will see how they feel. So many variables though - sleep quality, sickness, general stamina...2 -
Long run saturday.
Plan A in April was to get to 25k a week by Christmas and stick there.
Plan B in Summer was to increase my long run by 1km every third week until Christmas then every other week until I hit some unspecified goal.
So now we are at Plan C, two weeks of messy 10ks and was enough and today I went to 11km. Intervals were still all over the place but I finished strong. I also noticed something new in the mirror, it appears to be a clavicle and hasn't been since I was 17.
On another note, I think I am mentally unable to accept that I run significantly faster and further than I did back in April and this is what much of my map checking has been about.
I was trying to take it slowly this morning, the watch said 7min/km pace. I tried to slow down more and I physically could not get slower than 7.30/km. (I know this is v.slow for a lot of ppl here but I had to work hard to get up to that pace in summer).

3. 100km........................51km
4. Long 10km.................11km
5. 100% Morning runs...5/712 -
Another 2.5m indoor in my “Warrior” gym class. Didn’t hit my maximum sprint pace but the instructor kept us on an incline even for sprints and recovery from bigger hills so it was never flat. Managed some short sprints on inclines of 7 or 8 so happy with that.

Run at least 4 5k races. Completed 8-31
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k. Nope...
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen - Completed 9-28
Sunny, low 30s F with a nasty wind out of the northeast. Started tightening up at about the 4.5 k point; concentrated on running loose with glutes tight. Thought about that infamous quarter, which led me to the Two Great Truths I've learned on MFP:
1. Never shake hands with a trail runner;
2. Never pick up a quarter you find on the course.
2020 goals:
Continue a 5k regimen.
Train better.
2019 Races:
4-13 Shine the Light 5K - 31:12 chip time; First Place male 65 and older
6-30 Strides for Starfish 5K - 31:34 chip time; 31/77 overall; second male 65 and older (no official category)
7-27 Solon Home Days 5K - 31:11 chip time; 95/141 overall; 4/6 age group (male)
8-31 Race for Freedom 5k - 31:39 chip time; 32:00 Garmin time; Third Place male 60 and older7 -
I'm in late, but I'm in for 10 miles.11

I've been slogging along the last few days. Very busy with work deadlines so Thursday and Friday miles were low, but at least a run was done. This morning's 17 degree F weather for long run was certainly brisk, but the sun was out so and not any wind to speak of, even off the lake, so it didn't feel terrible. Except for the frozen butt issue which many of us were suffering from. The run felt really rough to me today. Still some residual soreness from workouts this week and from races the last two weekends maybe. I really wanted to stop after an hour but managed to drag myself through a little more. I felt like I was trudging so slowly but the pace was actually not that terrible overall.
Hope racers are doing well today and look forward to hearing reports from anyone racing this weekend.4 -
FASTED: I pretty much do all my runs fasted. I've tried both ways, and for me personally, I feel better when I'm fasted. I have "Runner's Gut" issues, and have found when I do fast they are lessened (not gone, mind you, but less) that if I eat anything before. Now when I did my duathalons, I did make sure I had something carby (the old standby bagel w/peanut butter and/or banana) several hours before start time, but that is a different ball of wax!
PLANT BASED DIET: I'm not 100% plant based, as I eat cheese, but for me, I try to eat as plant based as possible. I never really was a meat eater, so the full on transition wasn't that difficult for me, and therefore, I don't think I really noticed a huge difference. I've done a lot of my own research into running & plant based, and macros and all that, and realized that I still don't know the "answer". Matt Frazier & Meat Free Athlete has given me a lot of good tips & answers to questions I might have had. I am still searching for the right way and the "click" when everything magically falls into place, but I do know that I'm happy with not eating animals.6 -
I thought about being plant-based more than once, but cheeseburgers are a thing so that pretty much sunk that.11
-
It's an absolutely gorgeous day and I woke up with a crazy sore neck again. Ugh. I think I'm going to get a new pillow because this is ridiculous. Hopefully I'll feel better tomorrow and run then. I did walk the dogs today.
I hope everyone has a great weekend7 -
Have a great run @somum
Wore new support socks today and my longest toe on each foot feel like they want to explode. I won't be using them again!3 -
It was not easy but I made it. I rolled my ankle starting off too fast in the corral so I ended up walking the half☹️. The pain was intense but I pushed thru and while I am slightly bummed about having to walk I am so thankful I finished strong and still ran across the finish line running the last mile. The conditions were harsh with temps below freezing and with the wind chill factor it easily felt like it was in the teens. The ambulance was picking folks up on the track and some of the spectators were MIA perhaps due to the cold. But all In all I am so happy I accomplished my goal of finishing strong and that I did. Oh and for race food- so while I did eat energy gels and power aid along with post race food did remained mindful of how much I ate plus my tummy was upset so I slowly took in calories. I am wee bit lightheaded with a headache with super low pulse, BP plus an ankle that’s throbbing. Now it’s time to rest and heal. In the spring I am running definitely running the Shamrock so I have plenty of time to heal the ankle and train and learn from what worked well- determination and motivation not to quit and what didn’t work well so rolling my ankle because I took off to fast and not heeding my own wisdom and race day plan. Thankfully I had a back up plan to walk if my body did succumb to conditions or injury so I wouldn’t over do it and injury myself more.13
-
Thanks again Runners for your love and support! Ps. I didn’t take many pics but will have my medal and race blanket that was given at the finish line.2
-

@somum Sorry about your ankle! Ugh they are the worse, take forever to heal, but you earned your medal and rest! Well done!2

Had some life issues that got in the way of my running this week. I almost didn't get to enjoy our few days of cool mornings but I made a point getting out Friday morning before all my appointments and this morning while not the cool foggy overcast it was cool and very sunny. Yesterday's run was a pace run on the plan and I wasn't sure I would be up to it after 3 days of not running but my body was very happy to just go. Today after the pace run yesterday and probably more impactful, a PT session yesterday afternoon, my legs especially calves and my knee were tired and cranky. The PT has me doing a lot of single leg abduction work with bands and I was kind of surprised my glutes weren't sorer. The stabilization of the plant foot is where I really felt it though, so calf muscles and whatever muscle/tendon is along the outside of the ankle. I need to do the exercises again at home tonight assuming my legs are up to it. It is clear I cannot do them the day before a run though and I will certainly not do them prior to my race next Saturday.
Now to catch up on the thread - I am only 130 posts behind...

Lifting and long run today. I met my goal of getting started earlier so the entire day wouldn’t be eaten up with running. I didn’t take the dog because she puked last weekend and I promised her Id take her on a short, easy run tomorrow.
Total of 7.64 miles today! I only planned on 7, but per the usual, I was having fun and sort of exploring and then realized I didn’t know exactly where I was.... I worked on my pace a little but it is so hard for me to care about pace on a trail with a lot of changes in elevation. Plus I had already lifted and my legs were getting tired. I ran on the paved, flat trail for a little bit to see if I was faster on that surface and it shaved actual minutes off the splits. I went from 19 to 15 just from switching and that was with frequent stops to take pictures. I also found a deer, who met my gaze after I said hello. We stared at each other for a while and after several seconds, took off running in opposite directions. It was really quite a bit of fun but now I need to figure out what to eat. I don’t even feel that hungry....7 -
