@polskagirl01 I love your hill plan!
@mbaker566 That's awesome that you got started and found yourself further motivated to get outside I love seeing Christmas lights while I run also.
I got my second wind yesterday evening (okay, it was technically my first "wind" of the day. LOL) and got on the treadmill at 7pm. I've been having this mental barrier with the treadmill - running at 4mph feels plenty like running to me, although I'd never run 4mph outside......but then it takes so long to run at that speed that the idea of doing over 2 miles just overwhelms me. But I've noticed when I've done some laps at 5mph they aren't so bad as they used to be (6mph still feels like I'm doing to fly off the back). So I decided to just get on there and run 3 miles at 5mph. I put on a Christmas movie on my phone and I knew the first commercial break would be 20 minutes into the movie so I figured if I could zone out for that long, I'd take a quick break to drink water and fast forward the commercials. After that the commercials came too close together so I held on to the treadmill with one hand while trying to fast forward commercials with the other but not stop running. (I clearly have coordination issues. Haha.)
Definitely seem to be feeling better today and looking forward to some nice weather this weekend to run outside. Also I'll be off work after the 19th through the holidays so maybe I won't have to use the treadmill much at all for a bit.
Dec 1 - No run, no anything
Dec 2 - 30 min walk with dh/28 min 2 mile RUN on treadmill which was 1.5 mile at 4mph and then I sped up to 5 and 6mph for the last half mile because I thought I was never going to finish going 4mph
Dec 3 - short dog walks and some other walking then 5k RUN outside which took me 33:06 (there is a huge disparity in my outdoor running speed and my comfort level on the treadmill)
Dec 4 - took a 6000 steps walk while on the clock
Dec 5 - 2 mile RUN on treadmill
Dec 6 - Walked my dogs and then ran around like crazy getting ready to host a youth Christmas party at my church
Dec 7 -RAN 3.5 miles, also walked dogs, then jumped on the treadmill for a late night slow walk because I flat out ate too much
Dec 8 - Laziest day I've had in a long time, didn't even walk dogs, napped.....I at least did household chores
Dec 9 - walked dogs and took a short walking break at work
Dec 10 - RAN 1 mile of 1.5 on treadmill (A.M.)....... 2min x 4 intervals (.66 mile) as part of strength workout (P.M.)
Dec 11 - did some walk breaks at work
Dec 12 - RAN 2 treadmill miles
Dec 13 - walked dogs 1.6 miles and had a super busy exhausting day
Dec 14 - RAN 2 miles on treadmill in a pattern of run 2 laps, walk 1 lap, total of 3.5 miles on treadmill
Dec 15 - 20 min of light cardio and upper body strength just to say I did something
Dec 16 - RAN 3 treadmill miles at 5mph

Today I ran my coldest run ever. I ran 6 miles and the temperature was 29°F feels like 21°F. I know a lot of y'all run in colder temperatures than that, but this was actually the first time for me to run when it is that cold. I generally hate cold weather, but it wasn't too bad. My weather app said the winds were 8 mph from the NNW, but it didn't seem windy. I wore two pairs of gloves and my hands were cold. My fingers were a little painful, but other than that I was dressed pretty comfortably. I was a little chilly starting out, but not too bad and I did warm up as I went. I don't really know what to do about my hands being cold. I have to wear gloves anytime it is under 50°F so I guess I just have to get used to it. It was really a great run. It was clear and so even though it was cold, it was a crisp cold not a wet cold and there were plenty of Christmas lights still left on overnight so it felt kind of merry.

For hands, get them disposable hand warmers and insert them in your gloves so that they are against your palm. In some weather, you might find that too much heat, but if that happens you can take out the handwarmer and bury it in your pocket until you need it again.
Great job getting it done!5 -
Ran a fairly easy 1.58 miles to the gym this morning. It was around 20F out, which felt amazing after the single digits this weekend and negatives last week. My workout at the gym felt really good too - it felt like I was pushing myself and could see progress from the last couple of weeks. My primary complaint about the gym I belong to is that the workouts change up more often than I’d like. There are three different full-body workouts a week, usually three or four alternating sets built around one of the big lifts (deadlift, squat, press), and they change up every six weeks or so. Some six-week blocks focus more on heavy lifting, some on higher reps, some on accessory movements.
I’ve talked to the owner about the programming and he agrees that it’s not necessary to have so much variety from a pure strength-training perspective, but that most people need it to keep from getting bored. Before I joined the gym I was doing an A-B-A workout with three lifts each and found that perfectly enjoyable, but I’ll admit I’m a bit of a weirdo. I didn’t join the gym because I was bored, but because I wanted personal training for the heavier lifts and because I needed some social interaction to counter the isolation of working from home. It’s absolutely been worth it, but sometimes I just miss being able to look at my spreadsheet and track how my six basic lifts are doing.3 -

Finally - Today is Tuesday - I had my brutal long run and lifting on Saturday, so I've had two full days of rest. I feel basically normal except a tiny bit of soreness in my quads. The point is, last week I didn't feel normal until Thursday/ Friday! I'm getting stronger! I paid really close attention to what I ate after I ran Saturday and what I drank and I am sure that has a lot to do with it. I'm pretty content with this quicker recovery thing! This is great!

Running Books, great question @polskagirl01! I have a few...
One of my favorites is 'Shut Up and Run' by Robyn Arzon. It is incredibly motivating, has sections that are like a journal, running plans and all kinds of tips and I really like her attitude and the way she writes. When I am feeling unmotivated or like I am not improving enough it is my go to re-read.
I have also read Several of Matt Fitzgerald's books '80/20 Running', 'Racing Weight', etc. and there is definitely good info in them as well but I found them a bit boring.
Recently I read Jeff Galloway's 'Running until You're 100' which was also good, has tons of tips but I didn't like his frequent references to his other books rather than just giving the information on whatever it was.
Right now I am reading 'The Cool Impossible' by Eric Orton and trying to incorporate some of the exercises he recommends. It is written rather strangely - he tries to make it like you are there with him running and being coached, but again good information.
I'm going to the library and see if I can't find at least one of these books, primarily looking for the first. I like that it's written by a woman.1 -

Others swear the same about <insert diet here> I bet we could easily start a big thread where everyone touts their favorite diet and the evidence for it. I will toss some popcorn in the microwave and get my comfy blanket and watch.9 -

Hahahaha, I overindulged in the Lindor truffle diet today, my favorite!0 -

Yes. I swear that about my diet too!2 -
I want to start running again. I had started 3 years ago and had a massive unrelated injury resulting in a broken back, femur, knee, all kinds of stuff. Before I was injured I was 88 pounds into my weight loss journey and has started running (litterally 5 seconds at a time) and worked my way up to 5k's on the weekend with my son I know this is an advanced or established runners group but was wondering if I can join?
December is almost over and I can't run a mile yet, I am making my first goal to run 10 miles this month. I have 14 days left this month not including weekends so I am going to try for a mile a day10 -

You can only join if you're less than 67 years old. I refuse to surrender my senior status.🤗8 -

Welcome to you too! You can definitely join as a new/returning runner, we have all levels of running here and people love to talk about it with newbies and experienced runners alike. So sorry about your previous injury, but good for you for your weight loss and starting to run. Being able to run 5ks is great! So, have you been run/walking them, as you mentioned you can't run a mile yet. Lots of people here do run/walk intervals. Have you tried Couch 2 5k programs at all? Best of luck on your December goal, and you will have to set a new one for January!

It's one step forward and two steps back here, unfortunately. Recovery from the Spartan race has been slow, with the travel and getting a bad cold but I had been feeling better and thought things were on the upswing. I went to speedwork yesterday morning, because I haven't been forever, even though I was still a bit tight and sore. Speedwork this week was a dice roll workout that ended up being intervals of 4-4-5-3-3-3 minutes, so kind of middle of the road of what it could be in the random hands of the dice gods. I managed it but it didn't feel great.
But then, my lower back kind of seized up right after this - I think my general soreness/stiffness made my form kind of wonky and then the muscles in my back got irritated. And then my cold flared back up with terrible congestion and coughing (ouch). Yesterday and today were kind of miserable, but my back is definitely improved tonight over how it was. I've done some stretches, alternating ice and heating pad, sauna, and PT exercises I got last time I hurt it back in February, so I'm hopeful that it will be quite a bit better tomorrow.
Anyway, I didn't run today. I'm dosing up on various meds and heading to bed early.7 -
@katharmonic I hope you are feeling much better in the morning!
Welcome to the new members! I have found that all are welcome here.3 -
Welcome @imbatmilf and @srividyaramesh6592 ! I just love when newbies join us before any other thread!
@imbatmilf sounds like a journey! I had my femur rodded this past March. I think once I get my strength back and I heal from FAI surgery I’ll be back at it. I do suspect that I could possibly need the SI joint fused. I hope not. I think that would sentence me to biking and swimming exclusively.
We’re not an advanced group by any means, well except @Tramboman ‘s “advanced” status 😉. Love ya trambo! ❤️! We’re a collection of all levels. When I joined I thought everyone was some version of an elite athlete.8 -
Goal: 30 miles
12/2 - Ran 2.02 miles
12/3 - Ran 3.05 miles
12/5 - Ran 1.55 miles
12/7 - Ran 4.11 miles
12/17 - Ran 2.01 miles (12.74 done, 17.26 miles remaining)
Last week, not the best. Started with a migraine for 3 days, then I hurt my knee as I was walking out of work. Then...well, I was just lazy. Also was not constant with my meds. Today I got 2 miles under me. A few hours later when I was in the store, I started feeling the familiar tightening of a headache, and here I sit, debating which pain med I'm going to take tonight. Wonder how I'm going to get another 2 miles in tomorrow along with everything else I have planned...6 -
Any one have a monthly question to entice the newbies to join in answering?
The food thread has been chatting about our maternal influences and how it has effected or influenced the way we see ourselves. That may be a little deep, but it is the end of the year. Time to reflect, take inventory and focus our direction...
Family influences then?
My influencesI think my most cherished family relationship was with my paternal grandmother. She took my brother and I in when our parents were going through a divorce while she was taking care of an ill spouse (CJD). I’d really like to just be able to hug her and say thanks.4 -
Today I indulged myself in the Christmas diet at work. Six months ago that would have meant twenty cookies and eight muffins but today, I had two mini blueberry muffins (100 calories each) and two cookies - the ones with the Hershey’s kiss pressed in them. Other than that, I had a banana, boiled egg, bone broth, and some breaded chicken patty that was disgusting.
I DID get my run in tonight! 27 degrees, a little drizzle, a few icy patches, but I got another three miles in the books!!!! With NO walking intervals!!!!!
Things I learned: I can’t wait for those fleece lined leggings to get here from my sister!
Gloves! Oh my gosh gloves! My boss got everyone really nice gloves last year for Christmas and my hands were never cold tonight!
Finally - I HAVE to have my inhaler when I run ESPECIALLY when it is cold. I felt horrible in my lungs. They were on fire but I knew I could keep going because I always keep going. I had to focus intensely on going slow and breathing with intent. I have been using my Qvar (steroid) and Albuterol about 20 minutes before I run and I have been fine. Tonight, I couldn’t find the albuterol and thought “oh it’ll be fine - I’ve been fine this whole time.” It DID turn out okay in the sense that I didn’t die, but now I know what a difference it makes to use them prior to the run! Won’t make that mistake again!
There were a couple of times I wanted to stop and walk but I revisited my other runs and thought, “well but a few months ago I stopped because I couldn’t breath and my legs hurt so bad but tonight I don’t really have that excuse?” My legs didn’t hurt until the end. My breathing was the only problem but I knew I could keep going AND I DID!
Last week I was stressed because I was running indoors too much and this week I’m meeting my goals to run outside as exclusively as I can. I love how I can look back and reflect and literally see my progress!10 -

A recovery run that was hard for some reason. It was dark and slushy, so I was probably zombie shuffling more than usual, when a cyclist slowed down to tell me "pick your feet up more or you'll hurt your knees". I was in that running zone out mode so by the time I gathered the mental faculties to tell him that no, runner's knee is usually caused by overstriding or funky body alignment, he had already sped off into the distance. Ah well.Any one have a monthly question to entice the newbies to join in answering?

Have you tried wearing a buff over your lower face? My husband has exercise induced asthma and it really helps him when the temps are below freezing, warms the air up and humidifies it. A merino wool buff works best in my experience for letting you breathe without feeling like you’re cutting off your oxygen.
I got gloves for myself and husband today - recommendation for everyone who needs a quick Christmas present - Target has champion brand gloves which are flip mitts. I need gloves when walking and warming up but my hands really sweat when I run, and the combo of flip mitts and lightweight glove liners works well for me. The mitten part Velcros to the wrist when peeled back so it doesn’t flop around, and there’s even a place for the thumb to come out if you need to use your phone.5 -

This does help. Also makes you feel extra tough when the outside layer freezes crispy. I tend to have a buff around my neck and can pull it up as needed. Also I sometimes pull it up over the back of my head like a hood, then grab a bit of it from below my chin to pull up over my nose, like this: And then I can add a hat on top of that and it saves me from having to keep pulling the hat back down over my ears. But it's not cold enough for all that here yet. Works for cycling, too.

Welcome to all of the newbies!
I am at 47/100 miles for the month.
I go on call starting tomorrow through Christmas, but my plan is to at least go to the gym and run on the treadmill so I can grab the phone, if needed. I have another long run (17 miles) the last weekend of the month, so I am confident I will meet my goal.
I attended my Pump class again last night. I am hoping to build up some upper body strength. I have 0 right now...7 -

It was 22F on this morning’s run and there were a few icy patches along the route. We had one to trip and fall but that was due to uneven sidewalk and poor lighting.
@katharmonic – sounds like some more rest is needed. Hope you are feeling better today.
Hugs @dreamer12151 – hope you are feeling better today also.
Welcome @srivdyaramesh6592 and @imbatmilf!

Things to never eat before a run. Jacket Potato
The room goes dark accompanied only by Dry retching noises
End scene

I want to start running again. I had started 3 years ago and had a massive unrelated injury resulting in a broken back, femur, knee, all kinds of stuff. Before I was injured I was 88 pounds into my weight loss journey and has started running (litterally 5 seconds at a time) and worked my way up to 5k's on the weekend with my son I know this is an advanced or established runners group but was wondering if I can join?
December is almost over and I can't run a mile yet, I am making my first goal to run 10 miles this month. I have 14 days left this month not including weekends so I am going to try for a mile a day
This by far the most accepting thread I have ever seen on the internet. All are welcome. We even have some that do not run at all right now. Some that are working towards running for a full 5 or 10 minutes, and some that do 500 miles a month.
So yes, please join!7 -
