"Tell me your secret! I can't ever lose weight."
Then, I tell them, and they grimace and say, "Oh, I'm definitely not doing that."
Kay, well, have fun staying exactly the same, then!26 -

I had a pretty frustrating reaction last night. We had a dinner with my husband's family at my in-laws. The dinner is an annual pasta night - with three giant bowls of spaghetti and meatballs, linguine in clam sauce, and a baked ziti with spinach and sausage. Bread, and salad. I gave myself a fairly small portion of pasta, and a small piece of bread, and drank water. I didn't drink wine nor did I eat the ice cream cake dessert.
Multiple uncles, in their 50s and 60s, who were on their second or third full plate, groaned at me while saying "you can't be done yet!" and rolled their eyes at the small plate I ate, and the fact that I didn't go for seconds when there was so much food leftover.
I managed to keep my dinner around 600 calories while they easily ate 2,000 worth of pasta, bread, wine, and ice cream. I haven't felt that judged in a long, long time31 -

My mother-in-law constantly prepares too much food, often with an inadequate protein ratio, and is always flummoxed about how much is leftover and that she and my father-in-law struggle with their weight.12 -

I am so sorry you had to deal with that. Social situations based around food can be very challenging already. Adding on pressure from family to eat and drink more makes it immensely difficult and uncomfortable.
In social situations I often have to remind myself that my journey is mine, and I don't need anyone else's approval. Also nowadays it's legit painful to eat a few thousand kcal in one sitting, and I say so loudly if I'm getting pressure from others.
Obviously you shouldn't HAVE to justify anything you eat or don't eat to anyone. People are just rude and don't want to look at their own unhealthy habits too closely, so they'll question your healthy ones.15 -
I saw a neighbor I haven't seen since I was just starting my wlj. She looked at me and said, "Do you eat at all?" and then she kept touching her cheeks and looking at me with her mouth hitting the floor...haha!9

A lot of people have told me I seem taller since losing weight or that my legs look longer. Meanwhile, I feel a little bit shorter - because when I'm seated, I sit lower in the seat due to having less fat on my legs and butt. I also sit lower in my car. I'm still a fairly tall woman at just under 5'8" but it's funny when people say "I never thought of you as so tall".12

I got this text from a friend this week...
"Also wanted to ask... is it my imagination or have you lost a lot of weight. You looked so tiny when you stepped up to the mic last night to announce which group you were leading."
Whoop whoop!!!17 -

I never thought about how we would sit lower in the car! No wonder I've been feeling more and more like I'm going to become one of those old ladies that can't see over the steering wheel...but prematurely so.15 -
Woman at church said, "You look so thin, what are you doing?". "Eating 250 calories less per day and exercising 45 to 60 minutes", I replied. "Weren't you hungry all the time?", she replied. "Uh, nope!". . .12

“Wow, you’re turning into a stick!”
(That’s fake news btw)
“You’ve REALLY lost weight...are you sick?”
“You better stop losing weight or you won’t have anymore curves!”
“You’re not eating enough, I can tell.”
“You’re counting calories?! Are you hungry all the time?”
“What have you been doing? You’ve lost so much weight!”
Not all of them meant to sound as bad as they came out, but I never know how to respond to these comments. Lol. Any tips?
Regardless of the comment I just say thank you. I choose not to discuss my weight or health with others.12 -
My biggest peeve with things people say is "are you okay?" automatically assuming I lost weight because I'm sick.9

My family has always been a family of feeders. Food is usually involved anytime people get together. Way too much is cooked, platters still are full when everybody's done. I really dislike it when people push food onto me so much that I need to become rude. Once I say no thanks, that should be the end of it, right?? I know where the food is if I want more. And please do not give me candy, etc., when you KNOW for a fact that I'm trying to stay healthy. Yes, I'll allow cheat days but not today. Maybe not tomorrow either. Grrr. It's my right to say NO(or yes).
My dh brought home a 2 piece pkg. of truffles from his hairdresser and insisted I eat one. I said no thanks about 6x before he finally relented in a huff, 'fine but I do NOT want any candy in my stocking this year'. Haha yeh, cause we know how healthy you eat Mr. Cigarette smoking 4-16 oz. bottles of coke a day and unlimited carbs, sugar, and fat user.15 -
The worst comments I receive are the ones announced in front of other people. For example, I was in a meeting with a lot of people, and a woman announced loudly how great I looked and how amazing I've done- I didn't even know she knew who I was. Everyone in the room stared at me as I shifted awkwardly and tried to change the subject. The woman kept interjecting to say how great I looked at various points. I know she meant well but I've never been more embarrassed.
Another time at a pool my mother's friend yelled "LOOK HOW SKINNY YOU ARE!!" more than once. Everyone at the pool area looked at me. I was still over 200 lbs. I was mortified.
My friends and direct coworkers have been much more respectful. A couple of questions have come up but always in private and very respectful, and the coversation moved on quickly. I hope it stays that way as I continue to lose.22 -
I get mixed - either wow you look amazing! Your hard work is paying off we can see it. Orrrrrr do you have a developing eating disorder? - what are you doing? (I tell them) oh I’d be too hungry for that. Or the “I’m concerned for you” Lol you weren’t concerned when my bmi was classed under morbidly obese were you?

I'm pregnant, and my family are VERY firm believers that you must stop lifting weights and running entirely.
Gaining weight is "normal." They will be extremely upset when I reveal to them that I am pregnant and they realize I am still going to the gym.
Yes, to an extent, weight gain is healthy. I know that.
But, I'm not out to gain 80+ lbs either. My doctor and I are communicating and she is happy with what I am doing. She's encouraged me to continue. But I guarantee I'll get an earful every single day.26 -

Ah your family is quite old fashioned. Tell them after it's born you went to the gym. I've been told that it's very healthy to continue going to the gym if you are pregnant. If you just continue doing your normal workout it will be fine. You will probably have to cut back in the later stages of course but you will know when. Congratulations on being pregnant13 -
I lost about 36kg from 99kg. Once I was having lunch with two colleagues and the conversation ensued :
Col.A: Hey, you lost a lot of weight! (turns to Col.B and said) Look, she lost a lot of weight right?
Col.B: Does she? She looks the same to me, did she lost weight?
Col.A: Girl, stop losing weight, ur eyes are sunken and too thin.
That was the last time I lunched with them.19 -
Are you not eating enough?
have you lost weight? Oh no that’s not you, you look sick.

Thank you! I guess I misunderstood my mom and dad when they went on a rant about this.
My cousin's wife is pregnant also, although way farther along than I am. She's constantly ranting and raving about how she hasn't gained a single pound, because she's so religious about not letting it happen. She gets extremely offended and upset if anyone tells her she's showing.
I guess they were just distressed that she's out to gain absolutely no weight for her entire pregnancy, which clearly is not healthy.
My mom was very supportive of me still going to the gym when I talked to her. Although, I would have continued going anyway, lol. She was just very adamant in telling me that "If you're hungry, you better feed that baby! No more counting calories!" I just kind of nodded and smiled. Yeah, sure Mom. What she doesn't know won't hurt her! Lol. I'll be counting to make sure I'm not going overboard, but I've certainly upped my intake.20 -
I’m down abot 30lbs from my first known starting weight...I had lost some already before I stepped on the scale, so I don’t know what my true starting weight was.
I remember is February I got my first “have you lost weight, you look great!” in the wild. I was beaming. It was an old friend that I hadn’t seen in awhile. He asked me what I was doing. I laughed and told him “you know those annoying people who tell you to move more and eat less? Turns out the *kitten* are right..who would have thought”. Weirdly I ended up on the local news that night (long story) with a head to toe shot of me from the back. So I got to see the next morning (on the news no less) that I did actually look pretty good.
Of course earlier this month I was with friends that could be considered the equivalent of elderly aunties and uncles...who were discussing my weight loss like I wasn’t in the room, saying that I shouldn’t be allowed to lose any more weight with grave concern. I butted into the conversation and thanked them for their concern, but I was healthy and will continue to to lose at my pace until I decided I was done. It did start to grate on me, because I was annoyed to begin with and this was one of many instances that night where I was (a woman in my 40’s) told that I should listen to my elders...that particular line of discussion got shot down pretty quickly and decisively.
Other than that I haven’t gotten too many comments, because i’m Still wearing much of the same clothes and I can’t find pants to fit, so they are all big and a bit sloppy. (I’m going broke buying jeans!)14 -

Why would your family need to know that you are still going to the gym/lifting weights? As long as you and your healthcare professional are happy you are being sensible in pregnancy it's nobody else's business. I don't tell my wider family when I'm walking or swimming - no need to announce you're gyming7 -

Curious people say...
How did you lose fats?
What did you do?
Are you exercising?
Are you on diet?
Aaawww that has too much calorie, I thought you are on diet.. don't eat that
Insecure people say...
You lose fats already, stop losing or you will get sick
You'll gain back what you lost
my friends say
you look good, you lose great amounts of fats
You are an inspiration to many
I am proud of you.. you have a strong mind

What about the ones who non-verbally try to sabotage your healthy lifestyle - like keep asking you to eat with them at work because they feel lonely eating a whole bag of chips or packet of chocolate biscuits on their own (frequently throughout the day)...(my female boss who is overweight and tells me that life is too short - but is bordering Diabetes type 2)...I ignore of course...but her constant pestering is annoying to say the least.11
-
Most annoying is when you are nearly there at your goal, and people say you are disappearing and then when you start to gain it back they say, it's because I am happier (like huh???)...6

Yeah some people are just horrible when they see you succeeding at something. Have had that and it’s tiresome - especially as you have no choice but to put up with them day in and day out. They will try and wear you down but don’t let them!

Spadesheart wrote: »I feel like a lot of the "you're going to get too skinny!" comments come from people who aren't really ever going to see you without a shirt.
I dress well, and dressing well as a man with the blazers and what have you really obscures the form a bit, so while I do get that every so often, I get it. You have much more intimate knowledge about your journey than others might. Depressing as that mirror can be sometimes.
I do get "something is different about you" sometimes, and I do find it amusing, because either that's either because I shaved my beard and people just noticed, or the weight. Same for "I could definitely tell, you can see it on your face."
Bingo, I snicker inside a little with the "looking thin", or "do you still lift?" comments when in single digit bf. Depending what I have on, I will look "athletic" at the very most, but no where near what I actually look like. This doesn't bother me in the slightest though, i like the surprise element anyway lol.9
