The gym is going to be a sad place this week. It's hard to process.
I’m so sorry to hear that. *hugs*

@katharmonic I echo all of the other condolences here. I'm sure it's especially shocking to you as you had just spoken to her. I'm pretty close to the same age, and am not expecting to leave this earth anytime soon, but we just never know which random conversation will be our last. I hope you're doing ok, and that you have someone you can talk to (face to face).
And then the joyous news... happy for you and your family! @Camaramandy6481 -

@Camaramandy648 Congratulations on the latest addition to the family.
I realize the 12 DAYS of Christmas are over, but the 12 RUNS of Christmas continue...
The Twelve Runs of Christmas
On the tenth run of Christmas, my workout gave to me:
Ten dry heaves wrackin';
Nine walkers walking;
Eight hip tweaks twangin';
Seven sparrows chirping;
Six frozen fingers;
Five trillion snowflakes;
Four wind gusts;
Three calf cramps;
Two frozen ponds;
And a small niggle in my left knee.
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs
Run at least 4 5k races
Get a 5k PR
Average at least 138k per month, to meet my Run the Year pledge of 1,020 miles

@katharmonic unexpected death has a tendency to put things in to perspective. i've really learned to embrace the how important is it? philosophy
@Camaramandy648 Congratulations.0 -
@Camaramandy648 That's great news for you and your kids! I feel for the owner too. I don't think I could move and leave my dog behind.
@Avidkeo and @PastorVincent Yeah for the new running gear!
@katharmonic So sorry to hear about the lady at the gym. Hugs and prayers and condolences to you and her friends and family.
@Tramboman Hope you are feeling better!1 -
so i had my first returned foster dog. they decided that the 4 of them didn't have time for him. even though they already have a dog. and i have 2 jobs and 3 other dogs. so i had to wait for them to drop him off. so again, later run. tired legs. speed demon really wanted to go fast. i didn't have it in me. definitely appreciating the above freezing temps.6

@PastorVincent those are AWESOME!
@katharmonic Jeez, that is awful. I am so sorry. Sudden losses like that always shake me to my core. I hope that you are able to find peace in the midst of the sadness.
@Avidkeo that vest looks awesome! You'll have to let me know if it's amazing - I need to get one.
@Tramboman you are doing so well! I am so proud of you!
And thanks to all of you who congratulated me on our newest addition. I cannot tell you enough what an amazing boy he is. I am in love. My heart is so full.

@katharmonic I am so sorry to hear about your friend from the gym. There are just no words.
@Camaramandy648 I'm glad that everything worked out for all parties with the dog. And nice shoes!
@Avidkeo I got one of those vest in November and I LOVE it!
I did not run this morning. but I am planning to run at lunch. My cold seems much better, but I am still coughing a little. So I decided that rather than run in the dark at 29°F I would wait until lunchtime. It is supposed to be 60°F then though, so it may be warmer than I want it to be, but I do a little better in the warm than the cold. Plus I figured it would be better not to be breathing in the cold air and probably better to run a shorter run. I will only have time for around 3 miles or so at lunch and if I had run this morning I would have probably been tempted to run further. I hate being sick and especially at the beginning of the month. I feel like I am behind on my goals, but in reality I am not. I'm hoping that taking care of myself when I'm sick will be better in the long run, but I am impatient about taking time off. I know it is irrational the think that missing one run will completely derail my progress. I just hope the run today at lunch is a little easier than the run on Sunday was.11 -
Went to the gym before work this morning as always, but I was feeling a bit more tired than normal. Fitbit said I didn't sleep as well, so that's probably why. Anyway, decided to just walk for 45 minutes on an incline instead of jog, so no new mileage today.6

@TheMrWobbly I love this...I love your improvement then from not being able to even run a mile to marathons to now improving your speed...WOW!!! And I'm happy to be on this journey with you, also.
@Camaramandy648 So many of our adult choices stem from our upbringings. Yours was horrifying, I'm sorry; I emphasize. I had one I would not wish on my worst enemy. I moved 1,500 miles away from it and that is how I found myself. I went back up this past summer and I could not be around my mother; it made me sick, literally. She could pass on and I'd be relieved... I know that's harsh. It's also the honest truth.
@Camaramandy648 Your daughter and your son are adorable. I'm very happy for you and your family. I have one bit of advice... If this pet was wanted by all members of your family, incorporate all of them into the dog's care. We got our dog as a pound puppy, 8 years ago, and my kids were so ambitious to be a part of her life...feed her, walk her...Now it's like pulling teeth to get them to do anything...I do it all for her...My mistake was that I should have remained consistent in their caretaking of the dog. She's not a burden but in all truths, the novelty wore off. Anyway... your dog is beautiful...
@katharmonic I'm sorry about your friend...young lady...
@emmamcgarity & @shanaber and anyone else pushing through injuries, I hope you get to feeling better soon...I seldom have the words of comfort except to say that I appreciate the effort to continue on... sometimes I'm not sure where the journey leads but it definitely takes us forward...I say this as someone who wonders what my ankle will look or feel like in 20 years...
I'm not setting a yearly goal, not yet. But my monthly goal for January is 140 running miles, which is averaged at 35 per week. I set out to run yesterday and within three minutes, I was walking. I walked 3 miles pushing little man. I don't count walking miles (if its consistent walking) in my running miles. So I only have 29.7 miles for the week (Wed- Tues.), excluding what I will get today. If I can get 5.3 I'll be on target. My training plan called for 5 miles yesterday.
I continue to learn so many things being here. Y'all truly did help me with nutritional/fuel running options. I also learnt that it's recommended that you consume protein within 30 minutes of a long run and that caffeine after a long run or muscle burn will help replace or rebuild glycogen. I read alot... sometimes I have to weed out what is relevant to me. For example, the other day I started reading about carbohydrate depleting and reloading and then I stopped. Woah Nelly...one thing at a time and this was way beyond anywhere I will probably ever be.
I learnt to get through little aches and pains. My ankle hurt on Sunday. After a long run, my sleep is affected drastically as I'll wake several times throughout the night sore tossing and turning. But I also learnt that if I can make it through one night, usually my ankle feels better in the morning and two days later (today) no aches or soreness.
@Elise4270 I think my favorite and best dish is chicken fettuccini alfredo. It's loaded with fat... butter, heavy cream, and Parmesan cheese. You don't want the recipe; it's addicting.

Missed a few days here. Did read up, and agreed some of the stories of perseverance and strength from trauma is inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
@katharmonic - Condolences. So sad, and indeed puts things in perspective.
@Camaramandy648 Congrats on the pup! Such a handsome dog, and the reaction from the kids is priceless.
Feel better everyone that isn't - I'm hoping I don't come down with something, I kind of feel it coming on. Ugh.
Impulsively signed up for a 8k (5 Mile?) race this Saturday. Never ran the course before - apparently there is a 400M HILL which I will have to run twice. Great.
Part of my goals this year is to try to run a race in different distances up to a HM.
So a 5K, 8K/5 Mile, 10K, 10 Mile and HM.
This one will cross one of them off.
Did some speed intervals today. The next couple of days will be easy as I want to rest up and have fresh legs for the race on Sat.
Welcome to all the new runners!7 -

Butter, heavy whipping cream, and parmesan? We cheat and use canned chicken too. I like Romano, but for some reason everyone else prefers parmesan. I'm lactose intolerant and noodles upset my stomach. BUT I love fettuccine Alfredo. I think it was the first thing dd learned to make. She even sautees fresh garlic to put in it. Yum!
@katharmonic That's a shock about your gym friend. I suppose she had a known underlying condition? Prayers for the family.

You! You played in my head this morning. You posts here and on Strava - thank you!
I hurt my knee last week after my New Years Day run, so I rested it, then have this wierd cold-y thing settling in, right in the throat & chest area now. I rested over the weekend, and slacked on yesterday's ST workout. I was strongly temped to skip today as well, then I recalled your posts, @kgirlhart, and thought, "if she is keeping moving, then what is your excuse? Flip days, go for a walk!" So I did. I even scaled that back and did only 2 as opposed to 3 miles just to get out there. Yes, I coughed. Yes my knee was still sore. Yes, I was grateful I didn't run. Yes, I realised when the wind hit that I was stupid & forgot my scarf or buff. But I moved. And I plan on moving again tomorrow. Maybe that 2 miles I was supposed to run today, maybe a longer walk.
That's why I keep coming back here, just reading people's posts I find some motivation and inspiration in them. Thanks!!10 -
@dreamer12151 Thanks so much for your kind words. I find a lot of inspiration and motivation in this group too, but it never really occurred to me that I might motivate someone too.
January Goal: 100 Miles
1/1: 6.41 miles
1/2: 6.10 miles
1/5: 4.55 miles
1/7: 3.55 miles
20.61/100 miles completed for January
20.61/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
I got out at lunch and ran 3.55 miles. It was definitely the right choice. I had a pretty good run too. I only coughed a little. It was ~60°F but there was some wind so it felt cool at the start and even though I did warm up I didn't feel over heated. It definitely felt better than Sunday's run so I think a shorter run when it wasn't quite so cold was the way to go. Tomorrow morning should be just a bit warmer than this morning. It will still be cold, but I think I will go ahead and run before work. It should be 35°F with 6 mph winds and by lunchtime it should be 60°F with 18-20 mph winds. I really don't like the wind so I think I will take my chances with the cold. Plus I feel much better today, so I should feel even better tomorrow.

Anything butter and garlic is delicious, have not tried canned chicken but I would...
After the marathon, I am baking a mandarin orange cake (really, I think it should be called a citrus cake since it also has pineapple in it, although, it's in the frosting). Anyway, though, in a house divided with 2 chocolate and 2 vanilla, this cake is a winner all around...
Mandarin Orange Cake
1 box yellow cake mix
1/2 cup oil
4 eggs
One 11 Oz. Can mandarin oranges
1) Mix cake, oil and eggs. Add cans of oranges including juice.
2) Pour into 9×13 pan.
3) Bake at 350 for 22 to 25 minutes.
Frosting:
One 4oz. Box instant vanilla pudding
One 22 Oz. Can cold crushed pineapple
One container Cool Whip
1) Mix instant vanilla pudding and crushed pineapple (including juice) to thicken juice and pineapple.
2) Fold in Cool Whip and frost cooled cake. Chill in refrigerator before serving.
Simple and DELICIOUS...

Hey all.
Well I've stuck to the IF for 2 weeks, and yep I thing it's great, my hunger and cravings have definitely decreased whisbis wonderful. However I am finding that my running has been affected. Well I think so. I can run happily at around a 6min/k pace. But anytime I try go faster than that, I just feel weak and like I have no energy. Its not a major. I'm kinda half heartedly training to run 10k in 55 mins, but I can't seem to improve much. I mean I'm not serious about it. I purely started it as a goal, something to work towards.
So after a bit of reading, which basically says that running while fasting isn't the greatest idea, I'm going to start having a snack before my longer training runs. I mean the fasting is more another way to prevent over eating, than an actual thing, so when I'm running 8k in the morning no harm in having a banana before that!
And that's one of the key things to do when training, constantly reassess, is this actually working for you? Do you need to change things up? In this instance yep I think I do.
So this morning was an 8k pace step run, and as you can probably tell from the above ramble it was awful. Granted I have a couple of good hills in my run, but it shouldn't be this hard. I can usually do this easily at around 6:10 min/k, so increasing that slightly to 5:50 min/k shouldn't be as hard as it was. Still I did it, with a couple of walking breaks.

@LoveyChar I'd love some cake! Or pie or ice cream. Did you see the commercial for the little Cesar's thin pizza? I LOVE thin pizza.
But. I'm trying to do better. None of that stuff helps me make better choices. I just want more of it. It's like, ones too many and uh.. something never enough.. totally forgotten that NA/AA quote. You get it though. I can't stop at one.3 -
Thanks for advice @PastorVincent @rheddmobile @katharmonic @TheMrWobbly @quilteryoyo (i think thats everone who responded directly, sorry if I've missed someone) I have logged it because I did it, however poorly but if the run police call and I am going down, I am taking all of you with me.
6k without interval. No drama. Felt fine and equalled my longest run without interval.
How are my goals going?
I have a number of goals this year which are staggered so each month should have one main goal. This month is a10miles long run. Last weekends long run (14k) was a real struggle and I am now away one weekend, so I am 50:50 to hit it.
Of course it doesnt really matter. My real goal is to lose some more weight and be a consistent runner for the year.
Jan Goal:
1. Ttl 130km...............................30km
2. Long run10 miles...................14k
3. 17 runs....................................4
4. Help someone start C25K.....run 2 - 1.30/1 (3k)
5. Strength training x14.............4
