the local store has xc shoes with spikes on sale. cheap. are those only good on trails, soft trails?
i don't get out to soft trails very often. gravel and blacktop yes. sidewalks, yes
since my yaktrax were an utter disaster, i was wondering about them. i don't have old shoes to screw, i did find things like yaktrax but more screw-like. and they have straps to keep them on better. i don't think i need full crampons. just something to help manage the ice.
Could you buy a pair of cheap clearance shoes and screw those? Since you probably aren’t going to do long runs in ice, not very good shoes might work fine.0 -

That would have been so cool to have a meet-up! Asheville is about 1 1/2 hour drive for me. I saw that you visited the Biltmore. Such a lovely place. Was all the Christmas decor still up? Another cool thing to do in Asheville during the holidays is to visit the gingerbread house competition at the Grove Park Inn. I've yet to go but it's been on my want-to list for a long time!1 -
@shanaber Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately he has been taping all along and it doesn’t help enough. He has recently figured out that he was wrong about which tendon was bothering him and is going to try a new taping arrangement, plus I have an ankle brace which we’re going to see if he can use it without going crazy.5

oh no. i'm doing long runs in the snow. i'm looking for options to help me manage the ice.
for 12 dollars the screws traxs with the additional straps looks like the best option. sigh. new layer of snow hiding lots of ice now.

Feels like I am missing out on so much great shared information to learn from, and all the updates for my inspiration. Hopefully I can go backwards to get caught up this weekend ( hundreds of posts! Well. I did say HOPE 😆)
In the meantime: has anyone ever hired an in person or online running coach to help with technique & tips, etc? I started running by accident a few years ago, and wonder if I would gain anything by trying to track one down.
Would love some words from the wise.2 -

That would have been cool! No, the Christmas decor was not up. They apparently take it down a week into the New Year, so missed it by a couple weeks. I really would love to go during the holidays but it never quite happens.

I think things are looking up in general. My back has been feeling quite a bit better this week, and things are improving with the knee that I hit with the mace on Tuesday. Yesterday morning when I woke up the knee was pretty sore and it didn't feel good to put too much weight on it or bend it 90 degrees. I iced it on and off throughout the day at work. I thought I should probably not run on it, so was coming to terms with ending my run streak. Then I got home from work and did a little test jog up and down the hallway (thinking of our @MobyCarp and his jogs while cooking eggs) and it was not bad. As long as I wasn't lifting my knee up too much or bending excessively it was fine to put weight on it. So I headed to the gym and did a trial run on the treadmill. Not so bad! I went to yoga class after and that was less successful, I had to modify and bail out of several positions that were too much bending or anything with the knee down on the mat. But I was able to get some nice stretching in which my back appreciated.
This morning the knee was even better. I'm thinking it probably felt better to be moving it than sitting all day getting stiff. Plus I was using a topical CBD cryotherapy gel, which I felt like helped. Anyway, it felt OK and I did a treadmill warmup before my strength training class. We did mostly upper body and core, so the only thing I had trouble with was the leg press so my trainer had me sub farmer carries for that one.
Fingers crossed that things will continue to improve and this weekend's running will be pain free!

Hey everyone...
Ran in the Glides earlier and they worked well. I think the added support holding my feet in the correct position shocked my body a bit, but no pains or anything.
Question for people who run long distances with their dogs (10 miles +), what kind of high protein dog food are you feeding your pups? I am currently looking at Purina Sport, but not completely sure of what to feed my dog. I am not worried about his breed...he is an Australian Cattle Dog and his breed is born for long-distance running. Further, do you supplement joint health with any supplements, and if so what kind?

Yeah, I already am employed as a software engineer full time, full time as a pastor, write and publish fantasy and science fiction novels, and try to a good husband and father all while marathon training. Sure, I will just add organize and run races in my spare time...

5k in my least favorite weather, 37 degrees and raining! Literally no one else out running. We didn’t even see a dog walker, we were all alone in the parking lot. Not a bad run after we got going, except much slower than it felt.
Does anyone have a recommendation for cold weather leggings? When I take mine off my thighs are numb.4 -
You guys! I just looked to see where the closest parkrun is to me, out of curiosity because I knew we didn't have one, but new ones are starting all over Poland. They started one 5 kilometers from my house, and it looks like they've been doing it there for 6 months! I just signed up and will go check it out tomorrow!15

@emmamcgarity - I will check out the park run development map and see where the So Cal ones are being planned.
I know most everyone is dealing with cold terrible weather but I have the opposite problem already. If is supposed to be mid 70's here this weekend and 80 next. That means my HM is going to be really hot ☹️ I really don't want summer to start already. @SchweddyGirl - Hobbes the Vizsla is on Purina Pro Sport. It was recommended by his vet to replace the grain free food he was on before. (Purina Pro was the only food tested and recommended now because of taurine deficiency/heart related issues)
We also run agility (lots of jumping and turning) so he gets a doggy turmeric supplement for his joints. He has some other issues so he also gets plain shredded chicken thigh meat for extra protein and some other supplements unrelated to his activities.
ETA - this turmeric from Amazon. I give him 1/day.5 -

My screw shoes are retired running shoes. I don't have accurate mileage on them other than they're way over the recommended limits... but haven't had any problems with them and suspect it's because the surfaces I'm wearing them on are softer, and I don't wear them frequently or for long distances.0 -

Went for a laid-back 10k run, through the woods for a good bit of it.
Saw this:January goal 100 miles (stretch goal 200 km)
haha, no idea what it's doing there. I mean, other than watching the road.

Thanks to @PastorVincent @polskagirl01 @janejellyroll @kgirlhart @shanaber @Avidkeo (and sorry if I missed anyone) for the advice on shoes. Between December, when I started with these two pairs, and the marathon I expect to do between 800 and 900 miles so I think the answer is a trip to see my daughter at Uni in March where they have Asics, Adidas and Nike outlets and get two more pairs to get comfortable in a month before the race. As long as I can get them for £39 each again I'm okay.
No streak for me @Avidkeo with my back injury taking a full week out where I could only walk and not run.
If you have time on your hands and don't want travel you end up setting up and running an event like my brother has, which started opposite his house! peatlingchallenge.co.uk/
