Have you considered the Marquette Marathon for MI? I ran it in 2015 and highly recommend it. I think it's on Labor Day weekend. The weather was unseasonably hot the year that I ran it but the first part is on a nice shady trail. Very well organized event.2 -

My first marathon was the Myrtle Beach marathon. I picked it because I figured it would be flat and it was but it got a little boring after a while with no hills to run. The ocean views are limited also and it was cloudy and very windy the day that I ran it.
I've also run the Myrtle Beach mini-marathon which is basically a half marathon. I think it is held in October. I enjoyed it and got the coolest medal which was in the shape of a surfboard but could be used as a bottle opener.

It was almost 30 degrees this morning, so I ran outside and loved every minute of it! We've got more snow in the forecast, but it hasn't arrived yet.7 -

You are running. You are a runner. I personally didn’t feel like a runner until after I hit the 20 minute run in c25k. Looking back, I feel that day 1 was the beginning of my journey as a runner.
I was just about to say pretty much the same thing. Running a mile a day sounds like running to me - and if you're running... that makes you a runner!
@TheMrWobbly about the shoes, last year I ended up having to get a new pair of shoes and break them in on just a few runs before my marathon, because my 2 rotated pairs wore out and started causing issues, literally weeks apart. The new shoes ended up being fine, but I had to order them last minute and it added stress that I didn't need. I recommend what Pastor Vincent said, OR have a new pair on standby in case you need them. Wear them a couple times on short and long runs to make sure they're ok, then set them aside.
I've actually heard/read several times now that "breaking in" running shoes is overrated or even possibly a myth. I don't know about that, but I do prefer to have actually worn them on a long run before running an important, long race in them.9 -
@polskagirl01 Even if it is a myth, who needs the extra stress of worrying about it before a big race? I mean, knowing that I can run comfortably in the shoes I'm wearing is one less thing to have on my mind before I begin. I'm with you on this one.9

I find that breaking in shoes isn't necessary, but it's a good idea to get a good test-run, in case of defects.4 -

Nice to hear from someone who has done them! I did consider the mini cause that is all I want to do..So I might still pencil that one in.
@katharmonic I would love to do the Niagara Falls one! I'm Canadian at heart (dual citizen here) and that would certainly be a highlight for me. I've looked at some in Toronto as well.. Its' for sure on my bucket list.3 -
A little shy of 7 miles today. Was just sluggish and slow. Ah well. They can't all be great. I made it through in the cold (same temps as yesterday 25/18) and just really couldn't bother making it an even 7. I was done.
I agree on the shoes thing...which reminds me to check mine, cause I think they are getting close...5 -

Ours do the same. I love the fact they have Parkrun all over and you can just hop into one. Like this coming Saturday I'm visiting family, so gonna do the one in this town.

My new shoes should be here today, but I went ahead and ran this morning since my feet and ankle were feeling fine after yesterday's extra rest day. The last pair of shoes I retired only had 307 miles on them and I have not worn them for anything else yet so I decided to use them instead of my current pair which has 460 miles on them. I think that was a good call. I got a little bit of a late start this morning and I was taking it slow so I only ran 5.75 miles today. It rained overnight but it wasn't raining when I got up so I got dressed and got outside. When I got out there I was a little surprised at how misty it still was but since I was already dressed and ready to go I made the best of it and just ran. It was actually a pretty good run. I was kind of slow since I was trying to take it easy but it wasn't a struggle and I felt pretty good. It was ~45°F with some wind and misty especially at the start, but I was dressed right in capris and a t-shirt with sleeves and gloves. I rolled my sleeves down after about 3 miles, but then my noxgear turned red so I had to stop and replace the batteries. After that I pulled the sleeves back up because the wind was a little chilly. I'm glad I went ahead and ran this morning since Wednesdays are kind of busy days for me and I like to get the run in first. Plus with all the water in the road I ended up running right through a huge puddle and completely soaked my shoes. I don't worry too much about getting my shoes dirty, but I do kind of hate to get them totally wet on the very first run. I guess I am a road runner, and not a trail runner. LOL I am looking forward to having new shoes for my run tomorrow though.
@hamsterwheel6 I have mostly run the same races in the 3 years I have been running. I do like being able to compare one year to the next, but mostly I just run the same races because they are what is available nearby. I would kind of like to run some different races this year, but I don't know if I will. I'd like to run a 10K, but so far the only one I know of nearby is the same day as the HM I am running in May and I would rather run the half than a 10K.
@TheMrWobbly I would plan on replacing your shoes before the marathon. My shoes usually last me 300-350 miles before I start having aches and pains. YMMV, but 450 miles is a lot and since you are training for a marathon your feet and legs will be tired enough without running in worn out shoes.

I find the first several runs with new shoes suck almost as much as the last few will. I have run races in brand new shoes, but I much prefer to have a few weeks in them first.
As always, shoes are very individual so YMMV and etc.1 -

@TheMrWobbly - as others have said if you wear both pairs equally in training they will wear out at about the same time. I have had shoes I wore to over 700 miles and others that didn't make it to 300. It just depends on the shoe and how you run in it. I would not count on them lasting until 450. If they do then that is great, bonus miles, but I typically start looking for a new pair around 300 so I have them when I need them. Also depending on how often you are running you could try using one pair most of the time and only occasionally wearing the 2nd pair so it doesn't have as much wear on it but still gives your primary pair a break to recover.
As far as breaking them in - I have never felt the need to break in running shoes either but I would never ever wear a new pair of shoes, or anything else new, on race day. If you haven't run a distance equal to your race at least once in your kit you are asking for issues. That goes for fuel (GU's, Bloks, jelly beans, gummy bears, etc.) too.3 -

@TheMrWobbly if rotating them means both pairs will be worn out by the time the marathon rolls around, you need a 3rd pair. 3vwn if you don't roatae them, you will still need a 3rd pair by then because in theory they will have done the same miles regardless.
I have never had to "break in" running shoes and do hold the belief if they need breaking in then they aren't right for your feet. Example I got a brand new pair of Asics on Tuesday, then wore them the following day for a 10k run. They felt just as good as old faithfuls. But then it depends on what exactly you mean by breaking in.

Not sure. By Mar., I'll have the entire southeast and midwest, except WI and MI and ND. Since WI and MI are so close to each other, I like the idea of combining them for a double. With an official double granting a 3rd medal, the Earn Your Mittens Challenge just fits so perfectly.4 -
It’s cold here. Cold for me, anyway! I read about @PastorVincent running in 9 degrees and say, Geez, I can’t stand running in 39 degrees, how much of a wuss am I? But I guess I run in summer in conditions which would make most of the snowbirds lay down and die, so it evens out.
Tuesday’s 10k on trails started about 35 and got down to 31. In some ways I feel like it might feel warmer if the temp stayed below freezing. Sitting right above freezing with high humidity transmitting the clammy chill is grim. But the sun was out and it was pretty! We also get the park pretty much to ourselves when it’s cold. Saw three deer, 1 hawk, a heron, and a pileated woodpecker. It was very muddy but at least the bridge was above water. We’re running the second race of the winter series here on Sunday so I wanted a little bit more practice. Last year we practiced the actual posted course, despite conditions including an impossible shoe-sucking bog, and then the race organizers got there and concluded the course was impossible and changed it. So this year we are being more mellow and avoiding anything where conditions are too ridiculous. It’s supposed to pour down on Thursday, so for sure there will be plenty of mud left on Sunday. I just hope the bridge stays above water, since last year it was submerged so they changed the course to an out and back.
My husband is having ankle problems - he rolled his ankle six months ago and it’s still giving him trouble on trails. It’s fine on the flat and most of the time on trails but there’s a certain angle which hurts on landing. He’s not sure he’s going to able to race the series with me, which would be sad but one of us has had to skip races because of injury before. Not training with him on the other hand makes life difficult, since we go a lot of places which aren’t safe for a solo female. He’s hoping it improves.
Running in the cold makes me want to eat all the things! On Sunday after our run we had bbq and I ate all my things and then most of my husband’s things. This was possible because he had ordered two meats and four side dishes for himself! Tuesday we went to the Mediterranean churrasco place and liberally attacked the side buffet, which is nice because it’s mostly well prepared, healthy, and low calorie food such as grilled zucchini and tabouli, so I can absolutely stuff myself without going over calories. Then I just have to fend off the procession of waiters bringing around meat who have never seen a person eat such a small amount of meat there - which still ends up being, like, almost a pound total of meat! I feel like I ate a bowling ball. But with the run and not really eating much the rest of the day it was theoretically within my calories. Anyway! Do other people feel starving when they get in from a cold weather run?6 -

I really like this group! A great mix!
I finially finished being sidelined from running... only to realize it failed and I need to go back to the podiatrist, potentially for surgery. I'm still committed to getting at least a walk in every day, just a km, but better than nothing! I've never streaked before.
I really hope that Friday (appointment) fixes this or at least gets me on the way. This has been an off and on issue for a year.11 -

@rheddmobile - has your dh tried taping his ankle/foot? Wondering if that might help give some extra support without being too restrictive.
Today was Speed Work Wednesday for me! After Monday's struggle of a long run, this run felt amazing. I really pushed myself even if I couldn't maintain it for long stretches. Low 60's and partly cloudy = perfect! Glutes and hamstrings are complaining now but I expected it after a tough training session last night. Just glad I got the run finished before they got too whiny. Also got a really nice NSV when an acquaintance I haven't seen in a while told me how fit I was now and that I looked great! 😁

Hey all.
Nothing much to report. Did a short shake out 4k this morning, then took the kids to the pools then lunch at an American style restaurant.
We shared a bowl of nachos, 2 waffles, 2 stripes of southern fried chicken and 2 decadent milkshakes between 2 adults and 2 kids - gives you an idea about the size of the meals! I think I ate around 1000 calories in that meal alone! Will be a very light dinner! Though if ai go over today I'm not worried, kinda need a day off from time to time.
Friday tomorrow and there is a carnival in town! So will run in the morning, probably go to the pools, then take the kids to the carnival. I'm so excited, I love carnivals.

I ran today! Run/walk intervals 5/1 minutes for a total of 2.47 miles. I tried to run by feel instead of pace. My hamstring had a little tightness but felt stronger and almost normal. I’m beginning to feel almost uninjured...10

Did a 1-4-4-1 run tonight. Was in the 30s F so that is almost a heatwave compared to recent days!8
