@mbaker566 Thanks for the input! I hear you about schedules, and speed demon probably loves being involved!1

Some strength training yesterday and back at the cardio today. 7k done with no interval which I think is the longest I have run without a walk break.
At the start of the year Feb's main goal was to do 10k without interval so I am well on the way.
Jan Goal:
1. Ttl 130km...............................69km
2. Long run10 miles...................16k ✔
3. 17 runs....................................9
4. Help someone C25K.....run 3 - 1.30-2/1 (3.1k)
5. Strength training x14.............7
This may have been the biggest laugh I've gotten all day, haha good for you!1 -

Just curious as I'm planning my schedule.
I have races that I enjoy that I have done multiple times. Many will give you 'legacy' status if you run multiple times. I ran the 1st HM race I did by myself 5 years in a row because I liked it so much. I started with the inaugural and no one else wanted to run it and then kept going back. It was a fun, fast course and you ended at the beach. After 5 years completing it I got a jacket and by then the race had gotten pretty big so I stopped going. I have run one or the other half of the SF Marathon 4 times. We love SF and love going there and the atmosphere of the race, course, spectators, etc. are all awesome. They stopped having the 1st HM go over the Golden Gate Bridge though and that was a real draw for me so I stopped going back there as did many HM runners. I have run quite a few in other places that we like visiting or that I found and were an excuse to go visit. The only really bad race I have run was the recent USA Women's HM and I wouldn't run it again. The course was really boring and the organization was terrible. I ran the USA Women's Invitational HM a few years back and planned to run it again (qualified a 2nd time) but it ended up cancelled because of permit issues.

@T1DCarnivoreRunner I'll say it again. You are amazing. BTW, have you done one in NC yet? If so which did you do?
@hamsterwheel6 Nah, not really amazing... I'm super slow, so I have to do more miles to make up for it so I don't look bad.
For NC, I'm doing Run Oak Island next month. It's one of the Big *kitten* Medals races. I was really looking at it and not sure if I should sign up or not with current injuries, but then snagged a 15% discount because they had a booth at the Charleston Marathon. I was probably going to sign up anyway, but couldn't put it off any more after that.
Speaking of putting off registering for races, I need WI and MI still and was thinking about doing the "Earn Your Mittens" challenge (Wisconsin Marathon on 5/2 and Kalamazoo Marathon on 5/3). A part of me really wants to, but the other part knows that there is no way I'll get 5/1 off from work and I will get zero sleep before because I'll have to travel to WI overnight for the race. Maybe I'll do that another year.3 -

My father-in-law ran a marathon in every state, several in some states. Now he just runs the Lakefront Marathon in WI, annually. I know little about it, except that it's beautiful up there that time of year when the marathon is held and I know that he loves that marathon but I have never asked him why.
Adding...hubby calls it Lakefront but it's actually called Milwaukee Lakefront...2 -

I've been tempted to try those too but it's during my annual half marathon in door county.
There are some lovely races around the state.
Oh one other way i decide what race to run. The cut off time. There are a few races i can't do because I'm a turtle and would get picked up by a sweeper. I like one company because there are no cut offs. Low budget. Smaller. But great community and RD. I might need to go to one of those races depending on how my ultra training goes.6 -
Hey everyone! I am still trucking along. I have been really good at getting in at least -some- activity every day. Except for that drive back from Charleston....we just won't talk about that. Just been looking over my schedule for next month and I am going to have to bring in some meal prep if I am going to get my runs or walks in, dinner on the table, and still get to bed at a decent time (I have to wake up at 3AM for work ). Anyway, here are my updated stats:
Jan 1: 2.47
Jan 2: 3.28
Jan 3: 3.74
Jan 4: 8.12
Jan 5: 3.13
Jan 6: 5.32

Jan 8: 4.80
Jan 9: 5.67
Jan 10: 4.50
Jan 11: 17.58
Jan 12: 1.31
Jan 13: 5.78
Jan 14: 4.76
Jan 15: 4.43
Jan 16: 5.32
Jan 17: 4.16
Jan 18: 7.65
Jan 19: 5.98
Jan 20: 7.56

Now that first one sounds like my kind of race. One of the reasons I want to do the Myrtle Beach one in SC. This one is also very big so something to consider as well. Thanks for your input!1 -
Y'all slow turtles are making me laugh. I think I'm one too with my 11-12 minute miles. May I ask what a turtle is, what speed slow or turtle is? I know I'm slow. The Austin Marathon gives 16 minute miles for a full and 18 minute miles for a half. And I think you answered an unasked question of mine, which would be how do you get kicked out of a NWF race.2

Yes, perhaps next year.0 -
I did my run on the treadmill tonight. It was harder than my Saturday run at the same pace. I think I wasn't hydrated enough today. Hard to find time to drink enough when your wrangling nine one year old kids all day.
Passed my monthly goal today!!!7 -
I don't plan to ever run a marathon again. I'm glad I did one, and proved to myself that I could, but the whole experience was hard and grueling and not something I am up for repeating. I get the feeling sometimes that our run club is a little too focused on the marathoners, making the newer runners and those who aren't training for a marathon feel a little secondary. And I think some then naively jump into wanting to do a marathon as soon as they've successfully done a half or two, without really understanding how big a step up it is training-wise. I think I intellectually knew, but until I was putting in more than 15 miles for long runs every weekend I didn't get how exhausted I would be and how it would take over my life. Anyway, I agree that the marathon is a big deal but certainly isn't the ultimate badge or definition of a runner by any means.
About choosing races - I've been a runner for a little over 4 years so don't have a long history of repeating races, but there are a few I've done 2 or 3 times, and one I've done 4 times. Mostly those are very popular local races that "everyone" is doing, so it's fun to be a part of it. The JP Morgan Corporate Challenge is the one I've done 4 times and I now want to keep doing it to see how I compare each year. It's a 3.5 mile race so it can only be compared to itself, and being a part of a big team from work is kind of fun so it doesn't get boring to run the same flat out and back course each time. Plus it's always "interesting" to see what ways the logistics will get screwed up each year (because they will, every year) or what the weather will throw at us. For non-local races I don't really feel like I would repeat them if it's a destination kind of thing - once I've seen/done it I'm good. I did the Niagara Falls Women's Half twice though, because we had so much fun the first year, we invited a bunch more friends again the next year. That was plenty though, I probably won't do it again because I'd rather spend my travel on something new.

Just separated this out from my previous post because it was getting so long. Today was another treadmill run before my class at the gym. My back is holding steady to slightly improved. But to make life interesting, during my class I whacked myself pretty good in the knee with the 15 lb steel mace, so now I'm icing that. Good grief, if it's not one thing it's another. I don't think this is a serious injury at all, just a bruise and some swelling, but the poor kneecap is tender. Hopefully much better tomorrow.8 -
Hey all.
Took my new shoes out for a run this morning! I wore my New Balance ones... For about 5 minutes. I was about 5 minutes into a warmup walk and I started getting sharp pains under my arch right in the middle of my foot. This is almost a guarantee that the fit isn't right. I didn't even bother continuing in them. I went home, swapped for my new asics and went right back out. The Asics fit like a glove. No weird feelings or firm spots at all. And no sharp pains in my arch.
So I returned the New Balance today. $100 is only a bargain if they fit properly. Oh well.
It was a lovely 9k run. I thought my track would take me 10k but was just a touch too short, and I hit a really strong headwind during my last 2k so was happy to quit at 9k. And the Asics were perfect. I hate being a one shoe only person but gotta stick with what works.
Then did a bit of shopping, and took my girls (5 and 3) to the movies - Frozen 2. Amazingly miss 3 sat through it all without complaint! I was stunned.
As far as the conversation about races go - I have only lived in my current town for 6 months. There aren't a huge amount of races close by. I like the idea of doing the same ones regularly. I do park run as often as I can, does that count? I plan on doing the Wellington half marathon again, but haven't done that since 2011, so not exactly regular haha.

First time I ever actually ran consecutively for months was ten years ago on a treadmill because we were going on a cruise. This picture was almost 6 years ago up in the big D before rocking out to an Elton John concert. I was running at this time and stopped by the fall, gained twenty pounds and then started running a year later. I guess I've been running longer than I thought, but it was always for fitness only in the beginning and had nothing or little to do with pleasure or goal setting. Then when I started a stressful job, it was to relieve anxiety because I had trouble sleeping at night just to wake up and go to a job where I was getting beat around every day. Anyway, I'd like to run one marathon or half marathon (if possible) in at least each big city in Texas, the Pittsburgh Marathon (my whole family could come), and The Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon with my father in law because it's a fun time for everyone. I don't know if any of it will happen, though. I'll try I guess...5
-
@Avidkeo I love Parkrun. Now that my leg is doing better I’m hoping to go back starting this weekend. I hadn’t really considered it a race but I suppose it is. Our group goes out for coffee each week while the volunteers post the results,4

Pittsburgh is great fun and the new route is fewer hills than the old one. I think its like 1200 feet of elevation now. There is one really "fun" hill though. My wife and I run it every year and I will be going for a PR this year. Assuming training goes well.

Take pictures if you can, would love to see them. I love western PA hills. Good luck on the PR; I'm sure you'll achieve it! If not this year, then... maybe it's kind of like a fighter who takes their last, worst match, most difficult opponent and finally wins it, then retires... happy and proud. I'm kidding, it probably won't take you that long. It's nice that your wife runs with you too!0 -

Ours do the same. I love the fact they have Parkrun all over and you can just hop into one. Like this coming Saturday I'm visiting family, so gonna do the one in this town.2 -
@Avidkeo "I hate being a one shoe only person but gotta stick with what works."
Totally with you on this. I went to Asics outlet and bought two pairs exactly the same and I swap them each Sunday so they are both being worn in. Now I have a concern that they will each have done around 450 miles before the marathon comes up. Will I have worn them out and do I need to plan for another pair?
There is no "guess" @LoveyChar as you have the will and determination to complete those races. Should circumstance prevent you then so be it however you know you will try
My back is still troubling me but it has only been a week. Shuffling at 12:30 per mile pace isn't hurting so that is the plan for now.
7 -
@LoveyChar I think the turtle pace is relative. I know I am a turtle right now because my average pace is 13 - 15 minute miles depending on how my asthma is doing. I am also 75 lbs overweight so I know my pace will increase as I lose weight. I would love to have your 11 - 12 minute per mile pace8
-
No run yesterday. I ended up working several hours late, and then I got a call about some health issues with the girl I mentor, so there was no time to do much of anything until close to 9:00pm. I knew I’d I ran then, I wouldn’t sleep.
There are a few races I have done multiple times because they are local or have a nice course. However, I do try new races if they seem interesting.3 -
My goals for 2020 are to stay injury free and healthy. I am also possibly going to try again for my first half marathon.
January goal is to run 50 miles.
1/2 - Scheduled for 2 miles today but GPS said 2.47 miles.
1/4 - First 4 miler in over 2 years. Only 5 hours of sleep last night due to a late hockey game and an early game today. Wasn't a pretty one but got it done.
1/6 - Got in 3 miles on the treadmill at work this morning. Coming down with a cold so it was a struggle. Left work early and slept for 4 hours. We will see how I feel tomorrow, I am scheduled for another 3 miles.
1/8 - I did 3 miles at the ice arena while J got dressed for 5:30AM hockey practice.
1/9 - 2 miles on the treadmill.
1/10 - My "long run" was an easy 4 miles in the park. It was cool and rainy so now I have a runny nose but it was worth it! Best run I've had in a while.
1/13 - 3 miles Treadmill run
1/14 - 3 miles on the path by work.
1/16 - 4 miles on the path by work after another late night of hockey with J and 5 hours of sleep.
1/20 - 2.6 miles this morning in the park
1/22 - 3 miles on the streets of Parma, Ohio.
Monthly total - 34.07 miles
Got in an easy 3 miles this morning while J was at morning hockey practice. Felt good and relaxed for once. Had 2 deer pop out of the woods so close I could have touched them.
Races:
March 14:
St. Malachi 2 mile and 5 mile
May 16:
Cleveland Marathon Half and 5k
June 13 - 14:
Run and Ride Cedar Point 5k and Quarter Marathon
September 20:
Cleveland Hero's Run 5 miler
December 5:
Santa Hustle Cedar Point 5k3 -

Thanks. I run about 50% faster than my wife I will see her at the start and then not again till after I finish. I usually try to slip back into the race after I finish, find her and run-in with her to finish a second time.3 -

Any thoughts on this?

Sorry, I missed this the first time.
Yes, both shoes should, in theory, wear out at about the same time. 450 miles is more than the experts would suggest you put on a shoe (most shoes are rated at 300-500 miles). How many miles your shoe could actually get depends on a zillion factors that are specific to you. The more cautious among runners would replace them by 450 under "rather waste money on shoes then get hurt and spend it on PT."
So you might want to consider shelving one pair for now so it has fewer miles on your marathon day.
