Did some informal speed work this morning. After a mile warm-up, we would pick out a street light pole and run hard between it and the next pole, recover for a couple of poles and then do it again. That’s a wrap for me! Congratulations to everyone reaching goals or just out there moving!
@shanaber – Beautiful pictures. Good luck with your half marathon this weekend!
@mbaker566 – we all need an “old girl” in our life!

Work was so busy last night and the weather is hot and humid. I think the humidity has been close to 100%. Everything feels damp and sticky guh. Just driving home at 11pm I felt that sheen.
This morning I did a gentle 3.4k to bring me to 143k even. I'm tempted to do 7k tomorrow just to hit 150k for the month! May have to rethink Februarys goal already haha! See how I go tomorrow.
How is the fire situation down there? I have not heard it on the news up here in a long while.
I also haven't heard anything since last week. There was some big rain storms a week ago over there that I think helped drench a lot of the fires but There are still some fires, and it's getting dry again. One problem with Australia and Bush fires is there is always one or two in summer, it was just crazy how many there were this time, and how big they were

One of my favorite quotes and relative to me as I will not run my 170 this month:
“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” - Michelangelo Buonarroti
I'm still going to push on and, hopefully, get close but at the very least, closer...9 -
Well last day of January here.
My goal was 80k. I did that in mid Jan. So I increased to 140k. Did that Wednesday. Needed 7k today to take it to 150.
When I went out was just with the intention of running and seeing how I felt. I'd had a rough sleep, got an annoying thickly cough that kept waking me up. So today's run was anything greater than 2k. I intentionally started on my 6k route, with the idea I can do an extra k at the end if I felt it, or I can turn back anytime I'd had enough (my usual 7k route it circular, my 6k is out and back). I was at 3k when I realised my legs had decided we were going for the 7k.
At 6k, I admit I felt like saying, meh that's enough, because that's at the crest of a hill. But because i had done that much, I figured I may as well do it!
So 150k done for January! I haven't run that kind of distance since my half marathon training in October 2018!
So I ran every day in January, and my streak is at 42 days!

@LoveyChar I'd rather push myself and still miss a big goal than coast to meeting an easy one, absolutely!
I think I learned the most from the running months or races where I didn't do what I set out to do.

Took a different route this morning, one that is definitely more hilly than usual. Plan called for 3.5 and I thought it would be tough and it was, but I felt good and my time wasn’t bad, which means I’m getting better at the hills!
That does it for Jan as it’s rest day tomorrow. Finished with about 121 running miles and about 9plus purposeful walking.
Way to go everyone else for making their goals!
@LoveyChar love that quote!5 -
Way to go @Avidkeo! Way to crush our extended goal.
Love the quote @LoveyChar.
I did another treadmill session today. I went just a tiny bit faster than I did on Tuesday and it felt okay...not quite as easy, but that's okay. Glad for the cut back week. Tomorrow is a rest day, so, like a lot of you, my January is done. Fartherest distance in one month since I started running again about 1.5 years ago.
Well, just realized I'm a little less than a quarter of a mile away from 75 miles! If I get a chance, I may just do that much tomorrow. I already showered tonight, or I'd do it now. Wish I had looked before exercising today.

Ugh it turns out I have strep throat, no wonder everything seems so hard! I’ve probably had a low grade infection for weeks.
Didn’t run today, hoping to run tomorrow.
@SchweddyGirl since we were talking about Chris and his phenomenal speed, I thought I would share this photo from the start of last year’s winter series (which he won) in which I noticed my husband and I were briefly within a hundred meters or so of him, which is the closest I am ever likely to come to beating him in a race. This is the Shelby Farms 10k, which is purely gun time - no start gate, everyone just lines up in a giant row and sweeps across the field. It’s very impressive! Note he is already way out in front.11 -

Best laid plans and all that - I intended to get to the gym earlier than my 7 am strength training group class and get at least 3 miles easy warmup run on the treadmill, and maybe then make my monthly goal if I can run longer tomorrow. Well, the snooze button and some general disorganization meant I left home late. I downgraded my plan to 2 miles. And I was on the treadmill and on target for that when my trainer waved me over from across the gym. Stupidly, I stopped my treadmill and went over. He wanted me to join them (he and another friend/fellow trainee) in doing burpees! They were doing 30 minutes/300 burpees (whichever comes first) - which is a challenge they've been doing once a week starting at the ungodly hour of 6 am. And it's crazy in every way so I always say no thank you. But here I was caught and he said "There are 3 minutes left - go! Do 30! It's a good warmup." I whined a little/lot (I was already warming up! I was running!) but started burpee-ing it out and got 37 in the 3 minutes. So there! But of course, that's the exact wrong approach because now he's psyched that I can try for the full 30 minutes/300 next time.
Anyway, after finally being able to breathe again, I took the last few minutes before class to go back to my treadmill to finish up a measly 15 minutes of running total - the bare minimum to count as a run for the day according to my run coach's rules. I half-heartedly told myself I'd run more later but that did not happen so the 15 minutes stands.
Then group strength training - lots of arms today, plus... Before I started the burpees, I had said "so we're not doing burpees during strength class then, right?" and he said oh no, no burpees. Well, that was a technicality because while not given that name, we did a lookalike cousin of the burpee with an upward dog and a bear squat move in there. When called out on his hypocrisy, he said "I was hoping you wouldn't notice." 😭😭😭
Hey all, have a great last day of January!11 -

If it helps you feel better... I don't have photographic evidence, so you will have to take my word for it... I passed Kaci Lickteig (Pixie Ninja) at a race once.My understanding is that she was injured or something... whatever the case, she was not actually running the race. She was standing off to the side at the bottom of a hill (this was single-track dirt trail with some serious hills) cheering on runners before we had to go back up-hill again. She may have been standing still and not actually running the race, but I still also technically passed her.6 -
I don't plan to run tomorrow, so recap of January:
Goal was to complete the 2 marathons I was signed up for, an easy goal due to injuries. I can say I achieved that goal. Ankle injuries are not 100% healed yet, but getting very close. Unfortunately, knee bursitis is getting worse. I had changed my training plan as a result of the injuries and am continuing with an injury-based training plan until everything improves enough. I know I wasn't targeting any particular mileage, but ended with 122.44 miles this month.
Yesterday, I received a weight vest that I ordered online. I took it out with only about 5 lbs. tonight and had a good fast run. I'm probably not going to add more weight just yet as I want to get comfortable with the 5 lbs. at higher speed and for longer distances. This vest can be adjusted up to 20 lbs. I can see how it will be helpful, especially when I can do speed work again... and eventually I'll get to where I take it off for races and feel so much lighter and faster.
Also, there is a type 1 diabetic ultra-runner who does super long distance runs to bring awareness to type 1 diabetes. In 2018, he ran across the state of Iowa. In 2019, he ran across the state of Texas (and holds the FKT for that route now). Starting Sat., he plans to run across the continent (from California to Florida). Here is a TV interview he did. During the interview, they have some photos shown... if you pause at 3:33, you will see him and me talking as we took a break. I had joined him for a few miles on his run across IA in 2018.

Another 7k, one brief stop/walk due to stomach issues. Thats me done for the month, it looks like I have fallen short on my goals but doing 10 miles was always the main aim. So I am pretty ok with the month.
Jan Goal:
1. Ttl 130km...............................103km
2. Long run10 miles...................16k ✔
3. 17 runs....................................13
4. Help someone C25K.....run 3 - 1.30-2/1 (3.1k)
5. Strength training x14.............12 (i think)

@LoveyChar My marathon is March 27.
@katharmonic I can’t imagine doing 30 min/300 burpees. That makes me tired just thinking about it!1 -
I end the month with no additional mileage. We had so many crises yesterday, and I worked about 4 hours extra until things were somewhat settled. For those who don’t know, I am the mental health director in the prison. We have a lot of severe mental illness, and while days are usually busy anyway, things have been ramped up this week for some reason.
My best friend is coming into town tonight to celebrate my birthday, and tomorrow we are doing our 21 mile training run together. She is running the marathon in March as well. Hopefully, I can leave work on time today and get to bed at a decent time so I am fresh in the morning!7 -
Sorry to hear you are not well @rheddmobile though hopefully already on the mend.
You have both had great months @LoveyChar and @username301 so be proud of what you have achieved.
My daughter has had to drop out of the marathon so it is just me, I envy you having a running partner @marisap2010 though I don't envy your job which must be very trying at times. Having been close to a person who worked in mental health the one thing people didn't seem to notice was those helping people with these issues needed someone to be there for them at times, even if only to sound off. Thank you for doing such an awesome job.
So finally an 11 mile 'run' yesterday, 7 miles at a slow and steady pace (with a break for my train journey) then it started raining and once I slowed to get my back pack off and layer up my body didn't want to raise the pace again so a very gentle finish, but finish I did. That completed a run that was in my training plan for the 8th Dec! I am resigned to being 100 miles behind my plan and I will just keep moving forward.

Today was a scheduled rest day, but I decided to run instead. YET AGAIN it was cloudy, low 30s F, and no wind.
This marks the sixth consecutive day of not seeing the sun.
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs
Run at least 4 5k races
Get a 5k PR
Average at least 138k per month, to meet my Run the Year pledge of 1,020 miles
Run the Year Team: Pavement Pounders5 -
was going to try a few miles this morning. dogs woke me up early so that would have been good.
icy, black ice. no running
and poo in the living room, harry potter slippers had the toes eaten out of them, and one dog walked over to me and barfed at my feet. so my extra time was taken up with dealing with dog issues. still might be able to get some in tonight. if the weather warms up. can't run at the track. closed for speed skating trails7 -

Dog, husband, baby, and me sleeping in bed and dog barfed all over the bed and part of floor last week. Shampooed carpet and washed bed sheets and cleaned all wood on bed. Frustrating and time consuming, but we pushed her off into my daughter's bed every night now where she's equally as happy (dog is needy and must be pressed up against a human to sleep or she'll cry) for leg room. She's like a big, old baby to take care of. She's been with us since she was a puppy, almost 8 years old now. But she will probably be my last dog.2
