Allie: Have a great adventure! :flowerforyou:
Barbara: I would love to walk my dog on the beach and plan to do so when DH feels good enough to drive to the coast AND the weather is pleasant.
Karen in VA: Barefoot in the snow??? Birds need feeding, but where are your foot protectors? Our birdfeeders are all for hummingbirds. The other birds we see this time of year are members of the duck and cormorant families. They dabble and forage at the edge of the river in front of our house.
JackieM: So sorry for the loss of your mom. She was a beautiful woman with a sweet smile.
Debby in VA: It appears that you VA girls are enjoying a snow day. Congratulations!!!
Tere in RVA: I am happy that you’ve found a job you love. :flowerforyou: It is nice seeing you posting here again, too.
Machka: The RTW Nazi is bound and determined to “fix” your DH’s life. I think it might be reasonable to make a voodoo doll that you can poke with pins when she is being obnoxious.
I have had a good couple of days. DH and I decided we needed a treat and went to a local Thai restaurant for dinner. I ordered a chicken and broccoli dish that was divine. DH ordered sizzling beef that he loved. We splurged and had cheesecake. YUM!!!
Yoga this morning was a pleasure. Most of the regulars were there. A couple of people were off snow-birding in AZ.

I bought my plane ticket for my dude ranch trip! Exciting! And scary too. This e-ticket thing is new to me, and so dependant on my phone being charged and available. Well the whole thing is an adventure!
I think I am going to drive to the Baltimore airport in the daylight, stay the night nearby, park my car at the hotel and take a shuttle to the airport. And likewise on the way back. I have a friend who wants to take me to the airport, but he is often late. Still working out that part.
Annie in Delaware3 -
katla - my mother used to go out in the snow in barefeet all the time. I can still remember her going out in the snow, barefoot, to hang clothes on the line
Michele in still windy FL2 -
What toy was created by an engineer trying to keep equipment on a ship stable?

Michele I cheated & looked it up. Very interesting! I would have guessed something else.0

Yes ... it's certainly not what I expected to be dealing with in my early 50s! We were so fit and healthy!! We both have good and bad days dealing with it all. And just to add for the fun his return to work person has appeared on the scene again. Yay!
Groan.
I am so sorry.

She seems to think that after 2 years he should be well again ... March 22 is the "anniversary".
However, instead we'll have a set of Drs' appointments (at least 6 of them that I can think of, but more may develop out of those ones) in the next 2 months ... testing him and checking this, that, and the other. Evidently this happens around the 2-year mark when Drs think people with brain injuries have plateaued and aren't likely to get much better. I know all these Drs' appointments will be stressful for him ... and thus, of course, stressful for me because I love him and worry about him.
He's already showing signs of stress ... more forgetfulness, more emotions, confusion, inability to concentrate or fixating on things, restlessness, etc. etc. ... basically the signs of dementia. Trouble is, it's so hard to tell ... he could actually be developing dementia because people with brain injuries apparently have a greater likelihood of developing dementia or it could be just stress. I guess some of these upcoming Drs' appointments might be able to tell.
One day at a time.

Michele: Your mom must have had an amazing ability to tolerate cold. BRRR! My mom put laundry on the line outdoors to “freeze dry” in winter, but she used plenty of socks inside galoshes to do it. We didn’t have a dryer back then.
(((Machka))): I’m sorry your DH is feeling stress because of the RTW woman. :grumble:
I’m chilly today and drinking peppermint tea. It helps!

Good visit with Doctor today. Heart Echo shows no changes. Valves showing the slightest bit of leaking-may need to do something about that in about 20 years (in other words, very normal for 65). Cholesterol levels are all excellent. Since last year at this time (right before getting back to tracking), they have all adjusted into very healthy levels. Total cholesterol down to 177 from194. Triglycerides down to 61 from 78. LDL cholesterol down to 95 from 117. Thyroid stuff bouncing around like it usually does. Will see what Endo says about that. Only one test still going up slowly. May be indicative of bone issue due to cancer but have to have endo look at all of those specific numbers together.
Doctor did confirm I have sinus infection. While sudafed was helping the pressure some, he could certainly hit the spots where everything is inflamed. Put me on an antibiotic (and he is not huge on prescribing them unless he thinks absolutely necessary). Felt fairly decent after work so did go to gym. By the end, I was worn out (the work out was work tonight!). Glad I did it though. Came home, took first med and heading to bed to get good night's sleep.
Was up late last night (for me) for work function. Food was good and I ate the dessert. Hard time guessing calories, so I probably went over but not going to stress about it. Have a bit of deficit for the week and pretty sure of those calories.
Sorry to hear of those dealing with Altzheimers. My cousin's mother in law passed from that and it was very difficult on the whole family.
Machka-sorry husband is having issues right now. I hope docs are able to get a good evaluation in and the RTW stuff gets resolved.
Take care all,
Ginny in Ohio3 -
In Alzheimer’s - my Mom was diagnosed in 2016 although we certainly saw the signs much earlier. In 2012 we started seeing some thing but my Dad was sick with cancer and passed in December so we blamed a lot of her confusion on stress. When things didn’t improve early 2013 we blamed it on grief and learning to live alone for the first time in her life. My Mom never worked and was always taken care of by my Dad. She never handled finances, mechanical issues, handyman issues. Nothing, she didn’t even know she could use her bank card at a store only thought she could use it at a bank. My brother and I thought the learning curve and grief was really causing her issues. In the Fall of 2013 my eldest cousin (who is Moms age) told me that Mom was claiming she didn’t know people that she should know. We started the path towards finding out what was going on. It took until 2016 to get the actual diagnosis, they tried the meds that are supposed to slow it, but the side effects were terrible for her and we didn’t see it making a difference. She went into the nursing home in December 2017. My Mom will only be 74 in May. I miss the talks we used to have and I hate having to tell her that my girls are grown and married now over and over, so far she remembers me though and I’m very grateful for that.
Machka - will this be the end of the WCB return to work pushing since it will be 2 years will they just admit now that this is a lifelong disability and they are responsible financially or do you know yet? I’m sorry, they are so miserable to deal with.
Allie - I’m so happy to read you are having a great trip.
It was +6 at one point here today! It felt so nice going outside after work!

Michele, I have no idea how to slice bread thin. I just make fat slices, put them in a freezer bag and take one out when I want a treat and toast it. Sometimes I put butter on it, sometimes peanut butter, and today I ate the fat slice of bread plain. It was delicious.
Ginny, glad you had good news from the doctor.
Barbie6 -
Barbie- Fat slices of bread we call Texas Toast lol 😂.Its exspensive popular especially with butter y garlic powder on it some dried parsley flakes! Parsley flakes are the same area as the pepper to herb seasoning shakers. Can get big bottle cheaply. I used to make them for a spaghetti dinner treat or at restaurants I worked at. Use little tab of margarine goes a long way on the toasted bread.Only light sprinkle of garlic powder.Heavy in the parsley flakes!
Amber Tx3 -
They even name restaurant after the bread y it’s in every frozen food isle to restaurants here!
Tastes great as a sandwich 🥪!
Use a skillet to brown it!

I tried reframing- my dog peed on my just shampooed carpet became she is old and still loves me and I own a shampooer. (I think I did that right? Lol) I do understand what y'all are saying though. When I get that customer who is usually easy going but is now being a pain in my *kitten*, i ask them if all is okay. Usually there is more to the story.
Has been a rough week for energy and migraines. I sorted laundry 2 nights ago. Just started it tonight. Printer not working at home. Found out after trying to print 15 different pages of test results. I woke up this morning crying. Head hurt. Took meds. Went to work. Tried to not cry most of day. Towards end of day crying turned to pissed off! I HATE THIEVES! This guy came in, nicely dressed , said he needed to return 2 items that his yard guy had purchased but they weren't needed. Company policy is no receipt, no returns. Of course he had no receipt. He said 3 times that he spoke with a guy on the phone that told him as long as the items weren't used or damaged he could return them. Now, my warning bells were going crazy......did I listen, no....I gave him cash back. I did copy all of his id information, phone numbers, address and had him sign invoice. After he left my bells wouldn't quit banging....I checked the wall where he did indeed pull things off to "return". Checked security tapes, sure enough. He committed theft by deception. I called police. Now it was only $51.50, but small business and slow season, there have been days we haven't brought in $50! I was more than pissed. Well, the police found him. He was across the street at a bar having a beer on my dollar! I was asked if I was prosocuting-he]] of course I did! Had to sign charges at station tonight. He goes to court next Friday. This was after he faked heart attack upon arrest! It would have been cheaper to have just gotten arrested. SMH! NO MORE!
.anyway, tonight was much better. Dinner with friends plus 3 new shirts😁
(((Jackie))) so sorry for your loss
Alzheimer's is such an awful disease. My grandmother and 6 of her sisters all had it. They all died in there 70's. One sister died at 50 of throat cancer. Hugs and prayers to all struggling with this.
Machka- prayers on your continued struggles with the government. Ours is workers comp, and they suck!I feel you!
Ginny- Glad doctors appt was good. I am waiting on a phone call from a hemotologist (sp) about my dropping WBC. I still think it is yeast, but can't seem to get that treated any further......
I know there was more. Am tired, need to get to sleep. Work until 2, then 2.5 he drive to Louisville to watch granddaughter in dance competition. Spending the night with her and my daughter. Home Sunday afternoon.
Allie- I can hear you smiling! Have a blast!
Hugs!
Welcome!

Machka, Tracey and anyone else touched by the horror that is dementia, heartfelt hugs and hopes that you can find and retain periods of serenity and strength. I feel your pain. 😢
DH has been mellow and pleasant this week. We are still waiting for the written authorization from the VA to get him started with adult day care, but I got a voicemail that it is in the works. Today, he got measured for hearing aids, which we will pick up on March 17th. Best of all, he has finally come around to accepting my suggestion to go together to the condo gym. He likes the recumbent bike and treadmill. I've been using the rowing machine, elliptical and weights. Really feels good to be back in the gym, and to take my time knowing there is no need to rush back because I've left him home alone. The broken foot has been barking less at night, and I had my usual therapeutic massage on Monday, which always leaves me feeling brand new from nose to toes.
Tere: Great to hear you are in a job you like. Are you managing grants for a non-profit org?
Allie: Thrilled for you. Squeeze out every bit of fun you can in this trip.
We have had snow 15 days this month. ❄🌨⛄ Today was actually up to 50f, and everyone was out and about soaking up the beautiful sunshine. ☀☀☀ By tomorrow night it's supposed to get stormy again. 'Nuf already. I eat more when it's cold, and the scale is trying to tell me it's time to get a grip.
We can do this. Thank you all for your inspiring examples of how!

"Get to do"s and "chose well"sChose well open firehall for turnout rack delivery, BB&B, Post Office, Library, coffee/stroll with Denise, Dr’s office to sign for Joe’s test, bank, recycling.Whoops, chose not to clean today. Do better tomorrow.
Bonus:
Get to do: invest 10 mins cleaning Office, carry over Master & Guest Bds, veg and cheese prep, dog group, board meeting minutes, voicemail Doug about Win10 update and iCloud install, line dance, Freddie’s for complete series TDAP <$48, bake bran muffins, call Carolyn D. Next week Shadow to Mini Pet Mart to shop for crate, get Shingrix vaccine. next month: follow up for DEXA scan appt. Reward: inventory seeds, plan garden, order replenishments.
SuziQ Think you are right about why his father had the “bag”. When Joe’s father was growing up, food was scarce. IMHO the result was that when, as an adult, he had more abundance, he chose those categories that had been in short supply as a youngster, especially red meats. Also he refused to see a doctor for an annual physical until his issues forced him in to the VA. He had the surgery and the bag about 5 years ago, and was doing ok ‘til last year when he had several falls and finally broke his hip. He’s at the VA care facility now and fading away, but he made it to 89 despite decades of booze, cigars, steaks and fast women. Both the doctor’s assistant and my nurse friend reassured me that the cologard test is very accurate and if it comes up negative it is probably ok for Joe to say “no” to the colonoscopy. I am much relieved.
Welcome Diana in Western Sweden and early Happy Birthday.
Lisa belated “Po’ baby” in lieu of hugs. Po’ baby! That “worst Friday” kitten is the cutest, can’t resist wanting to hug it ... and you. Not sorry.

My husband is on Worker's Comp. The WC insurers have hired an agency who assist with return to work, and that agency has assigned us a rather young and inexperienced, but overly enthusiastic RTW coordinator. She hasn't been in touch for a while, but got all excited when I emailed her to ask her if there were something less physically taxing my husband could do because he gets so fatigued. Somehow she thought I was telling her he was ready to go back to work full time!! Um no!
Now that we've pretty much reached the 2-year point, the real battle begins. All these medical appointments over the next couple months (and longer???) are for both us and for the insurers to determine exactly where my husband is at with his brain injury.
Hence the stressfulness of it all.

Thanks for the kind welcomes. This sure seems like my kind of board. I am curious- what do people do here when you reach your desired weight? Does your diet change much, or do you try to stick to the same routine that worked for you for weight loss and just adjust calories? It'll be months before I need to worry about this, I'm sure, but I'm the type who likes to plan ahead.2
-
@dianastarkekman -this group is very supportive and friendly. I am currently at maintenance. I keep logging (get a few more calories now), weigh daily still. Started at the gym in December. Still working on figuring out how that impacts my eating. Have stayed between 137-140 for a couple of months now (5'5", age 65)-except for a Christmas bump that went away running a slight deficit for a couple of weeks. After coming back here about a year ago (was tracking, lost, then after some surgeries, stopped logging and slowly put on around 20 pounds), I started back eating in a way I figure I can pretty much stick to. From what I have read, people can take a bit to find their best maintenance strategies. The maintenance board has some good information if you like to read and plan ahead (I'm the same way).

I spent most of my life at my desired weight. However, I have gained weight a few times in my life. I had very gradually gained weight in 2012-2014 and in 2015 I decided to get on top of things again. By the end of 2015, I had reached my desired weight.
I was exercising a lot so I pretty much returned to normal eating with some slight modifications and maintained until 2018 when my husband had a bad accident.
I've gradually gained weight through 2018 and 2019 again, so this year I've been trying to exercise more and keep a bit more control on what I'm eating. When I hopped on the scale yesterday morning, I was down about 2.5 kg from the beginning of the year.
If you're not exercising much, you'd probably want to try increasing your calories a little and see how things go.

Today, my husband and I went to the Evandale Village Fair and National Penny Farthing Championships

We only stayed for about 3 hours, and enjoyed it, but it was a big day.
Then a short bicycle ride in the countryside and out for dinner.
I think I'll be going to bed early again tonight.

Morning ladies
Well we are having a great time.. we flew into Cusco yesterday and had a tour after we dropped out stuff at the hotel. Fun young kid that was our tour guide we went to the market and saw a few beautiful churches and we went across the street to a market and I bought myself a beautiful blanket and my daughter and granddaughter a Peruvian purse and my son a t shirt..will find something for Tom and Elena and a little something for the girls at work .
What memories we are making...6 -
MOrning all! Welcome new ladies! I have to scoot out and do my shopping and errand running, but then it is a weekend at the computer (paperwork and other things I have put off). I will check in again later and respond to the many posts that have intrigued me. But before I go:
Michele- because I love a good bit of trivia..."What toy was invented by an engineer on a ship to keep equipment from moving"...I have two guesses. My first guess, which is Tinker Toys, I am thinking is wrong because of Karen VA's note that it wasn't her first thought. lol SO...I will go with my second guess which is a Slinky; because it reminds me of a bungee cord and it has always seemed to me to be a weird toy/not a toy I would ever think of giving a child.
talk to you all later. ttfn KJ (kelly)
