@AnnPT77 I did relax a bit and the night was fun. I stuck to my plan, mostly. I sat across from the winemaker so it was a little clumsy passing 1/2 my wine and food to Max, but we did it. I did eat all of the beef course but portions were small. I’m sure I was up at least 1500cal. Today is a new day and off to the gym I go. I will take your advice and weigh on Sunday when I get home.

Good show, relaxing and enjoying! 1500 calories above goal is presumably less than that above maintenance (your neither gain nor lose current calorie balance point). If you've been losing a pound a week on average, 1500 calories above goal will be made up in 3 days of routine daily deficit (day of the event, plus two more), i.e., will delay reaching ultimate goal weight by those 3 days.
The temporary water weight may look it worse on the scale for a few days or week or so, but it's a lying liar that lies, in these circumstances. Don't let it fuss you, trust the process.
Sometimes, that indulge-y sort of thing is worth it IMO, and I'd personally put a special event like the one you attended in that category.1 -
Hey kardsharp you CAN do this. I have come to realize it is about how you think about food. Just take one day at a time if that’s too much then one hour at a time. And don’t beat yourself up over mistakes. Just lift your head and keep going. Have a great day 🤓2

@barbiecat & others who are dog walkers, I too get most of my exercise from walking my dogs. 3 are seniors now & they do most of their walking at the dog park on grass but I do have a younger german shepheard & a younger little one plus a small grand dog is staying with us & they make me keep walking. I average 10,000 steps/day & get almost half of that on our morning outings3

Hello all and welcome to our new joins. It's marvelous seeing the participation here. The weather today had me feeling a little blue, so after the gym I went and had my nails painted a new pretty shade of pink. When I clicked on our 60+ community thread and read through the many posts it made me feel as if I'll never be alone. Thank you.

I think the weather is going to be bad for about a week here in my neck of the woods so I guess its weightlifting for a while. I feel very fortunate to have a beautiful lake to walk at just two miles from home and the route I take is a 4 mile round trip. On a busy day there may be 15 cars go by . Lately to burn more calories and for strength I have incorporated walking lunges and use the guard rails to do push ups. By the time I am done I try to get at least 150 of each but often exceed that which makes me feel like I have accomplished something. It’s time consuming but worth it. I walk in one direction then back track by my truck in case I need more or less clothes or a drink about halfway through.7

For me it’s a mental challenge for sure. I can’t seem to muster up the determination I once had.
Same here. The trick for me is to make it a habit - scheduling gym time or recording meals rather than consciously pushing to a daily victory. Drinking water when my brain says it’s snack time works good too.

I read this post and then went back and reread your earlier post. Don't sell yourself short. You have plenty of determination. 150 lunges and pushups during a walk - that is a great workout and that would kick my *kitten* for a couple of days afterwards.
I try to go out regardless of the weather. I have no problem getting out to go fishing in the rain - as a guide once told me, "It ain't raining underwater." No reason I can't go for a walk or a hike, and the dog doesn't care, either. And occasionally you catch the end of the storm and the world is a very peaceful place for an hour or two.

Thank you alteredsteve175 I do have some very good Bone Dry raingear so I may just throw it on if its raining. I don’t care how cold it is but rain just ain’t my “thang”. Worked out in it too many years lol.3

I agree that it's important to go out regardless of the weather. I was taught that there is no bad weather, just bad clothing. I have hats, shirts, pants, coats, footwear, and scarves in many layers to allow me to walk in all weather. The only time I can remember returning indoors because of the weather was the morning that the wind was howling and I could hear branches cracking nearby. I live in a neighborhood with 100 foot trees everywhere. When the wind stopped I went outside for my regular walk and saw a lot of branches on the ground that had broken off trees and come crashing down in the wind. My dogs have coats and pretty much don't care about the weather.

I've been away a few days and enjoyed reading through the posts and catching up. I especially appreciate the charts/graphs that AnnPTT and Getthebabeback provided. All information is "food for thought" (pardon the pun). Good to see more new members jumping in. I've been having problems with adding food to my diary for at least the last couple of weeks. Get lots of "site down for maintenance messages." Sounds like there may be hope that the system is fixed now. Went out with friends last night to celebrate Mardi Gras and a birthday so did not eat exactly on plan but did plan my intake prior to going out and didn't do as bad as I might have. Back on track today. Thanks, everyone, for all the inspiration and camaraderie. This is a good place to be!

Hi I’m Peter from London aged nearly 60. After taking early retirement two years ago after stressful career in public sector I realised I needed to approach retirement like a career change. That meant having a plan for the key areas in my life from family relationships to learning new skills. It’s been a fabulous two years. Not always successful but very rewarding. The one area I hadn’t really tackled was weight. One of my goals is to get back to the same weight as when I was in my twenties. This means loosing 15 kgs or 2 stones. I’ve been at it for a month now and am 8 pounds lighter. But it’s tough. Would love to chat with people in similar situation or even meet up if in London or Cornwall.7

Before I say goodnight, I will relay a little story about going grocery shopping with my three year old grandson. We are in the supermarket and had to pass a mountainous display of Easter Eggs. My grandson says, Granma can we get some eggs and do what we did last year (an Easter Egg hunt around my gardens, mind you he only liked the coloured foil wrappers not the chocolate eggs). Trying to move him on, I told him it was still a while to Easter so we didn't have to do it now. His reply, buy them now and put them in the cupboard. No I replied, that won't work because by the time Easter comes they will all be gone. His puzzled face said why Granma? My devastating answer was, because Granma will probably eat them all, she can't be trusted. The look of horror on his face said it all! All I could think of was, let's go get some strawberries!

Happy Thursday all.
I'm not planning to post for a few days but may tune in to read your posts and will track my food. Headed to the beach and to visit our Grandchildren. Predicted dry roads and cold sunny days ahead. I'll bundle up for walking over the dunes and along the Atlantic shoreline. I'm always happy when I come into view of my favorite lighthouse and hope to see a nice assortment of shorebirds.
I plan to make healthy food choices and hope to stay at maintenance calorie goals. Looking forward to connecting with my daughter and a nice glass of red after the kids have gone to bed. I'll come home with wonderful memories and weigh in without guilt. Not on a diet, living life to the fullest.
This thread reminds me in many ways of a lighthouse, a beacon giving direction and comfort, lighting the way through dangerous shoals, stormy seas, the dangers of our personal journey. Let's keep making the connection here.

Welcome, Peter, I retired at age 58 and told my friends that I planned to spend my retirement knitting and watching television and that's what I did for quite awhile. At age 62 I found MFP and decided to give weight loss one more try. I started slowly, just logging my food even though it was less than healthy. I found ways to change what I ate to get the maximum nutrition with the fewest calories. I began to seek every opportunity to be active and now I'm on the move most of the time. I still knit and watch television but I do so while riding a recumbent exercise bike. I hope you will come back regularly and join the conversation,
j29t Enjoy your time at the beach and with your grandchildren. If this is a new lifestyle for you, then you will naturally make good food choices and keep to good portion sizes.
I got to bed early and got to read a bit before going to sleep. This morning I'll walk the dogs as usual and go to line dance class. This is an intermediate class and the dances are challenging. Just as I'm starting to learn a dance, the teacher introduces a new one. It is great exercise for the brain as well as for the body.

Hello everyone, really enjoying this group, I went back several pages to read. My quick back story is I lost 50lbs, kept it off for over a year & started gaining last March when I quit smoking. One of the problems I have is I don't feel as energetic since, also before mfp, I got used to feeling full after a meal & that desire has come back too. Also there was 1.5yrs of almost constant stress due to a family member, which has ended so I'm giving it my best shot starting today. I'm up 13 lbs. I used to think, 13 lbs isn't that big a deal, but it's a whole pant size. I do get around 10,000 steps/day & have started back to the gym but not as often as before, my energy level isn't what it used to be & probably some depression zaps it out of me too. So I've been thinking about starting a new account, which I think would help me mentally but I'd lose all my regular foods & would have to start over with that & find some of the groups I follow too.5

Hi @Evamutt. Did you know you can change your username once in the same account? Go to My Home, Settings, Change Username. You can then go into your profile and put in a new picture. As long as you've always used the name you're using now, you don't need a whole new account. This will retain all your other settings, including food, friends, etc. That way, you get a fresh start with a new name and pic and nobody but you (and your friends if you don't delete them) will know it's you.0 -

between 60 and 70 and struggle daily. Bad arthritis rebuilt right foot (from head on 2001 not my fault), plus bad lumbar area causing painful left hip. Hobble around on cane since 2012 after having wonderful, active life. Been to parade of doctors, shots, images, PT the whole gamut. Just got another lumbar MRI yesterday in the torture chamber of hell.. will see doctor and possible surgery in a few months. Then hopefully heal and then maybe try a surgery fusion on the bad foot. So all of you that are mobile and can walk fine and exercise --- I applaud you and only dream I can join that club someday too. Been logging my food religiously everyday since May 2016.2

I really appreciate all your support. I truly don't want to live the rest of my life with the extra weight I had. Being on here helps a lot. I didn't lose weight for anyone but me but It helps a lot to be in a community like this. I really don't have anyone around me physically to support & encourage me or be accountable to .It's funny, my husband started losing weight around the time I did, in 2016 & has kept it off. He doesn't even count calories3

I am so happy to see so many new folks stopping in... Welcome to all of you. I hope you will keep coming back because there are a lot of great folks here, good support, great advice and marvelous encouragement. We are all in this together and we can do it one day and one small step at a time. Lasting change is something that takes time and having a good support system is very important.

Next time internet goes out, just allow your phone to be a hotspot (as long as you have an unlimited data plan, otherwise it could be very expensive). I have an Iphone 6, so I can activate the hotspot through "settings" then "cellular" then scroll down to Set Up Personal Hotspot.
This way at least your can take care of some business that perhaps needs to be addressed sooner than later.

ekim2016, I absolutely appreciate my ability to exercise. I write in a gratitude journal every morning and almost always include "mobility" on my list. I had surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis in 2016 and spent a month lying down almost all day for a month in 2018 because of a spinal compression fracture so I never lose sight of how fortunate I am to be able to be active now.
Evamutt, there is no one in my face to face life that is at all interested in my weight loss journey so I value have this thread with like minded people who are interested in what I eat or how much I exercise. My husband is darling but his nutritional needs are very different from mine so we eat very different foods.
lynnechristy, I hope you'll take good care of yourself so you feel better soon. I appreciate your participation in this thread and the encouraging things you say.
We have only one car which works fine for us. Today my husband had a chiropractor appointment so he drove me to line dance class and came back to pick me up at the end of class. He got there early so he came in and sat in the back and watched us dance for about 30 minutes. It was great having him there.
I'd love to know where everyone is from (a general location) so when you talk about the weather and it's effect on your exercise, I'd know more---cold in Florida means something very different from cold in Alberta.
