it was 95 here yesterday. We're probably past the 40+ degree temperature swing. We'll hit 80 then 40 in 24 hours. I kinda like it. But, I live on the couch. Happy running!4 -
HAY HEY HEY!
I got a monthly question driven by self circumstances, (as always).
The background / whyMy DD's birthday is early next month, usually I get her a gift card. We may do "bra's and bacon day" too. Breakfast then we girls shop with all her girlfriends, I know you'd ask.. WTH is B&B day? she loves it, started it when she was about 10. hint hint if you have daughters. Warning: She did go through a phase where she was unwilling, but teens, what do ya do? gift cards! *eye roll* edited for corrections and clarity
So I had the thought this morning that I'd get her a Taber's, (nerdy Medical encyclopedia), I love mine, bought it when I was 17 (50-17= long time ago and still use it. yes was using it when I had the thought). DH kinda poopooed it. But, she is interested in med school, so... might be appropriate, just not for DH. Yes, I bought it. Mine might need updated from 1986 if she refuses it.
The Question
How do you gift shop for others? Are you a goof GOOD gift giver? What tips do you have for we not-so-great-gift-pickers?2 -
@kgirlhart Oh so sorry to hear about your Aunt! That is scary! Hopefully its not covid. She sounds like a fighter!
@Elise4270 Love the "B&B" thing. And I love the Taber's idea. My best gifts that I have given are when I know someones interests and find something to feed that. I got a friend who loves tea, a cute tea cup/steeper with some good tea once. For my kids, I give up on getting them stuff. They don't need much. I try to get them experiences, like tickets to a show or concert. Christmas has gotten really hard for me. I prefer to skip the whole thing and leave town. Bad Santa here....4 -
They closed our state parks today boooooooo8

@kgirlhart Sending best wishes to your aunt and your family.1

I am horrible, but I make it easy for everyone else by having a public wish list with gifts from under $10 to several hundred. My in-laws almost never use it and buy me things I have to donate away. Everyone else does or gives gift cards. So I guess that is not much help.3 -

11 out of 40 miles
Crazy morning, started up the street and an ambulance is in front of a neighbors house, the gentleman there has been sick for some time so I'm praying he is okay. Then I get like a mile from the house and I see a little stray dog running around. Of course I have to now catch it and finds it home because well that's what I do. So I'm in the street trying to get a couple of stupid cars speeding in my neighborhood to slow down and up runs another one. Oh geesh how to catch 2 dogs. So I called Skip wake her up, come meet me and bring 2 leashes. I'm looking at the dogs one is laying letting me pet it the other is just coming within my reach and is like okay you can pet me but she's shaking all over. Skip pulls up and the shaking dog decides this is the time to bite me, she just missed me since I saw it coming and she starts to run. I grab the friendly one and put her in Skip's back seat and lay on the ground calling Cujo, finally she comes to me and I'm able to pick her up. Skip says mom you know these dogs you pass them every day, oh yeah duh. We bring them home no one is there, but they live on a corner so I can see the back gate is open and I put them in, fix the gate so it stays locked. Look at my watch and realized I'm going to be late for a meeting so I had to run home and not finish my run. Honestly I'm like a stray magnet they come to our house they follow me when I run. There's a dog on the next week, Champ, when he gets out he comes under my fence in the back and plays in my yard. We actually brought him a tag so others know who to call when he gets out which is daily. ha ha
Well back to work.

@kgirlhart Good running on your 10K! Sorry about your aunt. Lots of hugs to you and family.
Hi everyone else! Sorry I really wish I could reply to all. Work (yes even from) home is very busy for me at the moment. I work at the dental board, and am responsible for issuing licenses to new dentists, hygienists. New graduates and those coming here from out of state.
Needless to say, COVID19 has delayed exams, graduation, background checks etc. All new graduates may not get licensed anytime soon and they are all freaking out. And I am getting bombarded with questions and requests etc.
A lot of our requirements to be licensed are state laws which would require general assembly to vote to waive or change, and well that is not happening right now or quick enough, even on "emergency rule". And we certainly don't feel comfortable licensing new dentists without them taking a clinical exam that is needed. But we also understand their worry.
Anyway; Still been getting out to run. The weather in the morning has been great for running so that's been good. Good thing too because then it's too hot. BUT, like everyone else, we are going to be dropping in temps by almost 20 degrees!
Gifts - If I know the person well, I do try to pick gifts from things I know that interests them; my son the teenager now only gets cash or visa gift cards lol. For others yeah, usually gift cards.
@eleanorhawkins I must tell you; reading your Hal stories have made my day. I look forward to the next installment:)

Thanks @bearly63, @janejelly47, @PastorVincent and #hamsterwheel6. My aunt does seem to be a little better today. They are still waiting on test results, but so far she is not running fever today. We also found out that our friend from church who is the only positive case in our county so far has been cleared by his doctors and is finished with his quarantine so I guess he has moved to the "recovered" category. So far our county has tested 28 people with 1 positive, 20 negatives and 3 still pending. I am trying to be encouraged by those numbers even though I know there are probably cases that have not been tested.
@elise4270 I love the B&B idea. Too bad my daughter is an adult now and lives 3 hours away. I think the Tabors is a great idea. I often get gift cards and my family has started making wish lists on Amazon and that really helps too.4 -

But our Prime Minister specifically said the Easter bunny was an essential worker! Just maintain the 2m rule!6 -
@simcon1 - you all are getting some great weather and we are getting your rain - thank you 🤣 My daughter in Seattle, not a regular runner, has been running since her cycling gym is closed. This was her elevation map. I had to laugh when I saw it because I knew precisely the hill she had run. It is a tough one but good for repeats! @Tramboman - my dad used to love fishing in the rain (not a down pour). He always said the rain brought the fish up.
@juliet3455 - we can order for pickup but you still have to go into the store and wait in line to get it (at the service counter not the check out)
@kgirlhart - I hope your aunt is ok and that it isn't CV! Will be keeping her in my thoughts!
@skippygirlsmom - you and your strays! 😂 they love you as much as you love them! I am glad you didn't get bit though!
@mbaker566 - ☹️
@bearly63 - Enjoy the rain! There is more coming your way.
@elise4270 - I love the idea of the Tabers. Maybe the two of you can do a B&B day too once this CV is over?
I used to do something similar with my DD as your B&B day but it was usually a day at the outlet mall. Later that morphed into a weekend trip, usually to some small place where we would stay in a hotel, watch movies in our room at night, swim in the pool, walk around and visit all the little shops and really not buy anything. It was all the things her dad hated to do but we had a ball. Now mostly she gets money to buy something she needs and doesn't have the money for, but we still like to do the outlet mall shopping or get away when we can.
For others I like to be creative and put together a basket of things I know they enjoy. So if they like to bake, different fun baking things, or a runner might get socks, a running hat and sleeves.
No run for me today, just more rain. The good news is that tomorrow should be the end of it! Right now it looks like mostly light rain tomorrow and I will get out for a run in it. I want to do my Hope Un-Canceled 10k. I am going to get a strength workout in this afternoon and get some more cleaning done (anyone else Hate to dust?).

Morning all.
@kgirlhart and @quilteryoyo hugs and thoughts with you and your families.
@eleanorhawkins you doing the HM plan again? I'm doing the marathon novice but we seem to be at similar levels? I also did an 8k run this morning, and yeah I love the way to go's lol. Im enjoying the app a lot.
So yeah 8k today, and 11.5 tomorrow. It was a chilly one this morning, around 10 degrees C, which is enough that I should probably have worn gloves and sleeves to start with, but I would have taken them off about half way through and would have to carry them, and I HATE carying stuff when I run. So annoying. Any colder then I know I'll keep them on through the whole run but at 10 degrees, it's that cross over point.
Today I had an actual realisation, I'm genuinely training for a marathon. Which sounds silly when I've downloaded an app and am following a plan, but today was the first day it hit me. Then I felt nervous and kinda thrilled. I never ever believed I would do this, and now I know I will. Because I have a plan, and I have the support of all you guys. And I know with training (and a bit of luck) I'll actually run it. So now I'm getting excited haha.
Also, with the news the last few days, its looking likely it will happen! See the spoiler - it's somewhat positive!so it's still early days I know, but yesterday was the halfway point of the stipulated lock down and we only had 29 new cases, out of almost 4000 tests done. That's huge. We were increasingly dramatically like everyone else, but it looks like our really harsh Lockdown is working. In the province I live in, we have now gone 7 days without a new case. I am watching this closely, and there is a feeling that we are incredibly lucky as a country and dodged a bullet. Its surreal at the hospital, we are finally prepared and know what we will do and how to do it, but it's looking like the influx isn't going to happen, which is AMAZING.
Any time I'm tempted to say that we are bored and doing not much, I remember what's happening in Spain, Italy, the US and the UK and I'm reminded that could have been us. Except our government sealed us off and put strict rules in, and mostly we followed them. And I'm grateful to live in a country who can trust their government and whose population does the right thing for the many.
Now I know there is a risk this is just a dip and we may see a rise again, but I'm feeling optimistic. Its nice to see some light at the end of the tunnel.
My thoughts and hugs go out to everyone else now. So many people whose lives are disrupted and impacted by this. I've been pretty self absorbed, and that's fair in the situation, now I hope that the good can spread and we can see the end soon
Well that ended up ramblyband naval gazey! I'm just going to put here that I love and appreciate everyone here. Thank you all so much.
Ok, go, run!9 -
@shanaber that’s a great idea! When’s she’s older... or the opportunity arises since she’ll be 25! it can turn into a girls trip! Love it! Hopefully the crisis will be over by her b day. If not, we can reschedule it, I’m her mother, I have the power to reschedule her b day. Haha! I know she wants to go see her “not a “ boyfriend. Maybe a trip would be a good gift. Maybe.

@kgirlhart Sorry to hear about your aunt! I hope she tests negative. If she doesn't, I pray she is able to pull through. Hugs to you.
@skippygirlsmom Sweet of you to take care of the dogs first. Hope your neighbor is okay.
@Avidkeo You CAN ABSOLUTELY run a marathon! You've got this. Love your positive news too.
This morning I got the call that they were transferring my cousin to the rehab/nursing home that I go to on Sunday's to sing....I really miss doing that right now, at 1 pm. Good news is that he is doing much better and able to carry on a conversation. His confusion and combativeness are gone. They never did really find out what happened, but I did find that he has been taking Chantix. Just wondering if that was part of it. He arrived at the nursing home as I was finishing up the paperwork, so I did get to talk to him a couple of minutes. He seemed good, but thinks he probably won't get well enough to go home. He's come a long way, so I'm still hopeful that he will.
Anyway, my day was filled with getting the things he needed from his apartment, filling out papers, and, while I was out, I did the week's shopping for mom and dad and myself. The neighbor didn't need anything today. Still, that took the entire day. I got home around 5 and had a conference call at 6 regarding our Relay For Life event - decided to postpone it until the Fall. So, no exercise for me. I'm bushed.7 -
@kgirlhart Oh very sorry to hear about your Aunt! That is how John contracted the virus (from the hospital stay for pneumonia 2 weeks before). Huge HUGS going out to you, her, and your family!3
-
@kgirlhart hoping for the best for your aunt and your family. THinking of all of you going through these extra difficult times right now with worries about family and your own health.
@skippygirlsmom way to wrangle those loose doggies. I saw a loose one today too, but I knew right where he belonged. He is a fast little one and not particularly friendly but he made a beeline back to his yard so hopefully all was well with him.
@hamsterwheel6 - I can imagine about the licensing. Our clinical students are in a similar boat with worries about getting their clinical hours, delays in licensing and certification exams, jobs and externships falling through. No one has any answers of course and I feel bad for them.
@Avidkeo I remember having that kind of realization about running a marathon - like holy cow this is really happening! You are going to be so ready!

Another end of day run. I walked the dog first, though, as I was not up for another frustrating stop and start run. It rained this morning, but it cleared up and the sun came out so it wasn't too bad. Although very windy. Ugh, we are supposed to get some snow and then change to rain tomorrow. I am not going to want to go out there. It is time to be warm!

A double rainbow at the end of my nine mile run this evening...

Thanks for your well wishes @shanaber, @Avidkeo , @Tramboman, @quilteryoyo ,@scott6255 and @katharmonic. I appreciate this group so much. We got good news today! My aunt's test came back negative and she is not running fever so they moved her back to her rehab room.7
