Every race I've had cancelled so far has either been rescheduled to another date or offers deferrals to next year. One offered a virtual option but I deferred. One race I know of but wasn't signed up for had more of a "too bad, no refunds" policy (that was handled badly by a jerky race director) but most have been pretty accommodating (they were all pretty big/popular races). I agree that I would wait and see what they offer if/when they cancel.
I'm hearing a lot of talk locally that there aren't going to be any races this year at all. I don't think anyone knows that but it's starting to be the mindset. If they do start up again though, every weekend is going to be full of events because they are all rescheduling for fall. I am currently signed up for no road races (other than ones that were already cancelled and I deferred) but two Spartan races that I am terrified of, but will nonetheless be very sad if they don't happen. The fear is motivating me to not slack off too much.

Ugh, it got cold again today. I just want to be warm so badly. I worked this morning and then took a break and walked the dog. In the afternoon I had to teach my two classes remotely, but took time to get my run done between. I did some math in my head and hoped I would get to 60 miles at the end of this run and ended up just over. That makes two weeks of 30 miles/week which is well above my average the last many months.
I'm a little cranky and whiny about being over this whole work from home/isolating situation but I have relatively so little to complain about that I won't. Just...blah. I want to go have a coffee or a beer. Or go to Aruba.7 -
You're doing great @kgirlhart ! I hope the HM doesn't get cancelled. That would give me hope.
@enaliba Glad the entire family is getting some exercise in and that you're enjoying your runs!
@Avidkeo I think your run was great! Who cares what Hal thinks?
@rheddmobile You are in a tough situation for sure. Even though her power company won't "talk to you," I wonder if they will let you pay her bill for her. That's not making any changes. It's worth a shot. Or maybe contact an organization in her area that can help her. Can you travel to see her? I don't know where she lives, but my understanding is that it is okay to travel if you are going to help an aging parent. I was able to cancel the ATM card today for my cousin. Still working on getting in touch with him to see what else he had that needs to be taken care of - there's no phone in his room - and maybe getting a power of attorney. I did speak with an attorney I know today and not being able to see him sign the document could be an issue. I thought there was a Notary that worked at the nursing home, but I called and there isn't. So, more work to do on that front. I hope you can at least figure out how to keep your mom's utilities on. Prayers and virtual hugs coming your way.katharmonic wrote: »I'm a little cranky and whiny about being over this whole work from home/isolating situation but I have relatively so little to complain about that I won't. Today's treadmill run is brought to you by shear determination, will power, and making the effort to go to the basement. I really, really did NOT want to run today. I was in a really foul/sad mood, for no apparent reason. The morning/early afternoon had gone well....got some stuff done I needed to to help my cousin out.
I took my dog for a walk so I could get some sunshine. That usually makes me feel better, but when I got back I was really in a bad place and just wanted to give it up. I started thinking how the last time I was running a lot, after I had a 6 mile run without stopping I just quit running. I really don't know why. But I did. I was afraid if I didn't run today, I was going to do the same thing this time. So, I gritted my teeth and took that necessary first step.
The run turned out to be pretty good. I decided to do the first run in the 80/20 Running HM plan for a change of pace. I would NOT have gone for just a steady state run today. It called for 5 minutes of low aerobic, 15 minutes of moderate aerobic, and end with 5 minutes of threshold. I did okay with that, but it was so slow that I didn't yet have 2 miles when I got to the end. I tacked on another 1.1 miles at a very easy pace in order to get in 3 miles. I also walked 1 mile for warm up and cool down. So, total today was 4.0 miles.
Later, I noticed on my calendar that today is the day, 14 years ago, that we found out my husband had a mass on his brain. (It was Good Friday that year.) I really think that is what put me in my mood, even though I didn't realize it consciously at the time. My subconscious seems to keep track of these things. I'm still in a mood, but am a lot better since I did run and know the reason for it.

@rheddmobile I’m sorry you are dealing with that tough situation. I know must be so frustrating for you.1
-
@enaliba - I too would wait and see what they do with the race. I have only had one race canceled and that was a long while ago. The organizers couldn't get their permits approved and they did refund everyone's money. There was no rescheduled race and they have not held it since so not like you could defer. So many of the races this year though are turning into virtual that it may be that they will offer that. You still get the goodies (medal, shirt, etc.) and you all could run/walk it together and even race each other. Make it a fun family 'race'.
@avidkeo - love you and Hal 😂rheddmobile wrote: »Getting ready to go out for this week’s 4 mile virtual race. It has been a day.My mom is losing it due to isolation. She has been not as sharp mentally for a while but was always extremely active and involved, and the past three weeks she has stopped making sense a lot of the time and is unable to manage her finances and deal with technology. She keeps resetting her passwords because “they won’t work” because she is trying to use the wrong password for the wrong thing. Her bank locked her out because she had fiddled with it enough to trigger an alert. She can’t get into her email because something is wrong with Norton’s so she fiddled with her registry and now it is a big healing mess. Can’t make her stay on topic long enough to do tech support over the phone and she also can’t be trusted to tell the truth about what she has tried and what results she got. For example she tried to pay her bill over the phone and it was declined. This is because her card had been cancelled due to being involved with a scammer. She said it was the new card which had come after that one was cancelled which had been declined, but talked to the bank and turns out they have not yet sent the new card, she was just making up that it came in the mail. When confronted she admits she doesn’t remember getting the new card in the mail but just figured “it must have come because it had been long enough” so she lied and said she remembered opening it.
All of this would be a pain and horrible during normal times but trying to deal with it remotely is almost impossible. At this point none of her bills have been paid, and unlike Memphis power which has put a moratorium on cutoffs, her janky rural power company will cut her off immediately if they don’t get paid. And they won’t talk to me over the phone, just her, so it’s like playing this terrifying game of telephone trying to figure out what to do next.
To top it off the assisted living community where my cousin lives has covid and I can’t get a hold of her to find out if she’s okay.
@quilteryoyo Thinking of you and your similar problems trying to find the keys, Id and so on. Normal problems don’t stop just because of covid. Yikes.
@rheddmobile - I am so sorry you are trying to deal with this remotely. I am having a similar issue with our friend Hilde but it really seems to come and go. She has scared me twice this week by not answering her texts or phone calls and when I went to see her she was so confused as to where her phone even was. Of course she also isn't wearing her medical alert any longer. Today we had a teledoc appointment and she was so confused about everything and downright belligerent to the doctor when they suggested she go to an urgent care for x-rays and blood work. The doctor even explained that they have facilities where they do not take anyone who is sick, it is primarily for injuries.
I would suggest that you get a power of attorney for medical and a general one as well if you don't have it already, so that you can talk to/deal with the doctors and financial issues as they come up. We had it with Hilde for many years (since her husband passed away). It has been a life saver so I can help her understand the doctor's comments and questions as well as being able to handle her finances when she has needed us to take care of things.
I did get out for a run today. Intervals with the Peloton app and finished my Humor Un-Canceled 8k. I will update my running log and ticker later...
Finally I thought this video was hilarious - put out by a school principal and his family in NZ. They clearly had fun making it! Can't Touch This4 -
Love the video @shanaber ! Hugs and kudos to you for helping out your friend.0
-
Delivered to my front door today, supposed to have received it on race day but they had not come in yet. Love it and I'm running in it tonight!5
-
No running to report here. Oh wait.....I am running on empty.....if that counts
Reading all of the posts just seems like everyone needs a hug and break! Sorry for all the crap everyone is going through. And having the one constant of running and training for races and having that messed up does not help!
Aruba sounds good right now! Somewhere and 75 ....
4 -
@LoveyChar Love that shirt.....and you earned it!!!0
-
@avidkeo good job on your run. Hal is really tough! Regarding carbo loading for training runs - not specifically "loading" but when I get up there in miles for long runs I do try to make sure I'm eating enough carbs and protein in general. I tend to eat quite a few carbs anyway but I'll stock up on bagels and pasta more at those times.
@rheddmobile I'm so sorry about things with your mom. So tough to deal with. The advice about power of attorney sounds good. Wishing you strength. And @quilteryoyo and @shanaber for your situations with family/friends as well. Hugs to you all.
@quilteryoyo good for you for getting the run done when you were feeling in a bad place. I can totally understand that subconscious mood based on a memory of a day - I've had it many times sneak up on me like that, not knowing why I was sad until later. I'm glad you got through your day and your run. Hope you will feel better tomorrow.
And yes, let's all escape to Aruba!3 -
Thanks for the support, y’all. @shanaber I had forgotten about your friend Hilde, that makes you, me, @quilteryoyo and @Scott6255 with his aunt all trying to help someone with dementia. It seems this situation is really putting those who were already vulnerable through a wringer! I think it is power of attorney time, had definitely been wanting to put that off. At least my mom’s good friend is a notary who can walk me through this. We got back into her bank account and transferred some money so I can pay bills for her as soon as I can get the account number from her paper bill - going out there tomorrow to delivery groceries so hopefully we can do some stuff without too much face to face contact. The main issue at the moment is that she has borked her email so she can’t get to any of her passwords after she resets them. And she has reset EVERYTHING including the default password printed on the side of her router.
So my husband and I ran a race today! Week 2 of the Run the 901 virtual challenge series, 4 miles. We searched Google maps near our neighborhood and found what looked like a nice spot to run in a straight line for a couple of miles without getting flattened or breaking our necks on the sidewalk, drove over and left our car outside a closed school, and went for it. And it turned out great, except that there was less social distancing than I would have preferred because several other people were doing the same thing. We found a 2 mile long access road for the railroad, no sidewalks, but it runs behind a bunch of houses, speed limit is 20 mph and there’s no earthly reason for anyone except railroad employees to drive down there. Nevertheless we were passed by three cars. And we passed a woman who was running and coughing, no mask of course. Okay, give her the benefit of the doubt, maybe she has asthma. Nope, I can smell Vick’s vaporub and cough drops all the way across the street, get away cootie lady what is wrong with you going out in public!!!!!!!!
So anyway we ran the 2 miles as an out and back. Mostly flat, some rolling hills. Weather too cool to walk comfortably, just about perfect for a hard run. Did much better than last week’s 5k race which was in hot weather. My goals for this one were to see if I could still do a single sub 9 minute mile since I haven’t done that in a while, then try to bring it in under 9:40 mile pace, since that’s a sub 30 minute 5k. And we did it, 9:35 pace overall and first mile was 8:50. That’s still almost a whole minute slower than my race pace last fall but better than I’ve done since I was sick over Christmas. Improving!Starting line:
Finish line:
And just for @katharmonic - I photoedited myself into Aruba! You are all welcome to join me any time!5 -
@rheddmobile - what a great update! Fab run and progress with your mum’s situation, and a bonus appearance in Aruba! Can’t imagine how hard it is for you and the others caring for vulnerable family members - @shanaber @quilteryoyo @scott6255 - thank goodness they have you.
I am proud to say I managed 10k this morning! My old 10k route - all the hills, no alterations, 422ft elevation gain. My goodness it was slow but I did it. I can’t believe that at one point last year that was my short run and now it’s the furthest I’ve been in ages. Sometimes I worry I might never get back to where I was. But actually, even if I don’t, it doesn’t really matter. As long as I enjoy it and continue to challenge myself, that’s all that’s important.
So anyway, halfway through the month and nearly 60 miles in. Possibly looking at a 100 mile month for the first time ever but not putting any pressure on for now!

In other news our stimulus check came which means... I can send it right back to them to cover last year's taxes! doing my part to keep things going I guess.8

@Avidkeo I lost track, are you still self-quarantined in your basement?2

@LoveyChar that shirt is AWESOME. I love love love it. I cannot cannot cannot wait to be able to run my marathon. I am considering running it anyway, just do the miles like others are doing... But I think wisdom would be to NOT do that, for the sake of the healing of my IT Band.
@PastorVincent Right there with ya on the stimulus payment. I am just going to bank mine and leave it. Althoughhhhhhhh I did[/i] see these SUPER COOL Under Armour shoes that connect to mapmyrun....... and i am NOT going to buy them because that seems silly. We all know that we learn about running and get better at it by doing it. I'm not buying fancy shoes..... oh wait.... I already buy "fancy" shoes.
Seriously though, I am not buying more shoes.
I did manage to make myself a smoothie for breakfast, to have with my toast and almond butter. I had been saying I would really like to be more consistent with this ("consistent," as in, "I have only made a few smoothies in my life.")
So here's a photo to make your mouth water.
Ingredients:
Kale
Blueberry Kefir
Blueberries
Rasperries
Strawberries
Beets (raw, unpeeled)
Beet Greens
Twenty2 Nutrition Protein Powder - vanilla swirl
It turned out pretty amazing and I don't know why I haven't always been doing this.

Hal gave me a break today, he just wanted a 6.5km slow base run. Haven't been sleeping well lately, the last mile or so felt a lot harder than it should have done on paper, but there you go. Seriously fast short intervals tomorrow means I get another chance at the flying off the treadmill and smashing into the wall behind it.
Anyone need an electrician? I have one for sale, going cheap but you would have to pay the shipping. Actually if you'll take him off my hands I might even let you have him for free!
01/04: 4.81km tempo
02/04: 6.57km base
04/04: 9.6km easy
06/04: 5.08km easy
08/04: 8.5km hill repeats
09/04: 8.06km east
11/04: 8.34km hard
13/04: 5.15km fartleks
15/04: 6.6km easy
Revised April goal: 140km. Run so far: 62.71km7 -
@eleanorhawkins I work for an electrical company. We'll take that electrician off your hands!0
-
@eleanorhawkins Sorry, I need a plumber, not an electrician.1

Nice shirt @LoveyChar .
@bearly63 , Of course running on empty counts.
@katharmonic Thanks. It's good to know I'm not the only one this happens to. I am feeling better today.
@rheddmobile Great run! You are amazing. Love the picture in Aruba! I hope you are able to get some things figured out for your mom today. I know how frustrating that can be. Hugs and best wishes for a good day.
@Faebert I know it is frustrating to not be able to do what you used to, but I think you are doing amazing. Hang in there. I have no doubt you will be back to your old self in no time. But, if not, like you said, as long as you are enjoying it and challenging yourself it really doesn't matter.

I want to let you all know how much it means to me to have this forum to share things about my personal struggles and my running experiences. I don't want to put anything on my FB page about my cousin because, well, people may know him and his estranged son is a friend. (I do privately keep him up to date, just in case he decides it's time to communicate again. But, he's in New Orleans, so can't really do anything to help anyway.) Also, very few of my face to face friends care about how much I run or my struggles with it. So, THANK YOU for giving me a safe place to vent and share and for being my virtual friends.13
-
@Tramboman I love your sense of humor - "how special!" rotfl
@quilteryoyo I totally get it - nobody in my real life really cares about my running. Actually, that's not totally true. My siblings are super supportive but we all live so far away. The people at church are supportive but also think I'm crazy. My kids don't care. My work people just think I'm nuts. The people here are more my friends and community than almost anywhere else.
Anyway, yes. Do try the smoothie. It's phenomenal.2 -

Today's 5 mile run was cold. It is hard to believe that we were in the mid 90's last week and this morning it was 32°F for my run. It was a good run, but it was cold. Yesterday the temp was a little higher but it was windy and felt a little colder. Today there was frost on the ground, but it wasn't windy. I wore sleeves and a jacket yesterday and ended up pulling the sleeves off and putting them in my pockets, so today I wore sleeves but no jacket. It is so hard to know how to dress in this kind of weather. I think I did good though. I was kind of cold the entire time, but not too uncomfortable. And yesterday I thought I was a little over dressed. I could definitely go for that trip to Aruba right now.
Hugs to @quilteryoyo , @shanaber , @scott6255 and @rheddmobile Helping out loved ones with dementia is so hard in the best of times and these are definitely not the best of times. @quilteryoyo I feel the same way about all of my "friends" in this group. While people in my real life support my running, I think they get kind of bored by it. I always get tickled when I catch myself telling someone about something that one of my "friends" said and then realize that not only have I never met that friend, sometimes I don't even actually know what their name is.
