Hope everyone had a great weekend of running, eating, celebrating Easter if you do!
We made some great meals and I took advantage of the gorgeous post storm weather here to weed our garden. I have a green thumb when it comes to weeds. Flowers and shrubs, not so much. If only the deer would eat the dang weeds. I have heard of hiring goats to come in and eat away. Or maybe I'll get a Longhorn to graze and get a Ag Exemption.....#covid19mindwandering!
I have been biking a lot - probably more than I should be. Can't wait to get the go ahead to walk/run or bike harder.

I spent most of the day today on family stuff. I helped my cousin pay bills and tried to find his wallet and keys to his apartment, which seem to be hopelessly lost. Now to figure out what important things he had in his wallet that will need to be dealt with. I am hoping not a lot. But, anything is probably going to be hard since I do not have power of attorney and he's in the nursing home, so can't have any visitors. I'll make some phone calls tomorrow and see how hard that is going to be.
I also had to go to Wal-Mart to get mom's prescription refilled. While there, I just did the week's shopping for all of us. I found myself wiping my fingers with the Lysol wipe I had after I placed every item in the cart. I feel I was as safe as I could be given the circumstances. The only things I wanted that I couldn't find was rubbing alcohol and gloves.
I also had to wait at my mom and dad's for a phone call from the nursing home to discuss my cousin's treatment, meds, etc. I didn't get home until nearly 4. Again, I was beat so I'm taking another rest day. Hopefully I'll get a run in tomorrow.
Covid rant below:Things were actually going pretty good at Wal-Mart until checkout. I got in a slow check out lane, as always. Anyway, this family of 4 came up behind me - mom, dad, and 2 girls around 10 and 12 years old. They came right up behind me! I mean, had I leaned backwards a little, I would have touched them. It's not like they were totally oblivious, because one of the girls asked her mom to do something, maybe eat something they were going to buy, and she told her no because she had touched everything in the store! I really wanted to turn around and say, "Six Feet please." or "Could you please move back a little bit." But, by the way they were acting, I figured that would cause a fight and just wasn't ready to deal with that or the stent in jail that may have resulted from said fight. LOL
When I could, I moved to the front of my buggy, to at least distance myself. Then, the one girl put her purchase, was buying a stuffed animal, right behind my order. She was leaning over the conveyor belt, over the things I was buying, and talking...no doubt spraying my items with all sorts of germs.
When I got home, I washed off everything that I purchased with bleach water. I just wish people would listen and keep just a little distance. I wouldn't have liked them being in my personal space without CoVid. With it, it was just a bit ridiculous.7 -
@quilteryoyo Sounds like a rough day. I hope you get some rest and can run tomorrow.They are limiting the numberof people allowed in the store here and would have let the mom in with kids, but not both parents plus kids. Plus they have signs on the floor at the registers and they are doing a decent job of enforcing it. But some people are just always going to be rude.2

Thanks @kgirlhart.They did have the signs on the floor, but they were ignoring them. Obviously. I did notice, and found interesting, that they had made little squares out of painter's tape at the self check counters and people were tending to stand in those. But a round sign on the floor seemed to do nothing. They had people standing at the doors going in and coming out, but they really weren't doing anything. I like the idea of not letting an entire family go in, but letting a mom (dad) go in with the kids.0

Had a very nice run this afternoon. Was a gorgeous 55F with 10mph north wind.
Got in under 130 bpm HR while just over 9 min/mi, and stride length returning to almost normal. Finally was able to run with only 1 day of rest. Hadn't been able to do that in months. So PF seems to be improving (slightly).

Back in the day, those who were oblivious to things around them ended up being eaten by something large and fierce.8 -

Yup, the deal here is one person from each household is the designated shopper. No kids unless you have no other options - and I'd still leave them in the car if I could. But people are dumb. I read a marvellous quote online recently, can't remember it exactly, but it went something like: 'There are two factors that determine how much a community is impacted by Covid 19: 1. The density of the population; 2. The density of the population.'

K, I am mostly still here. Very unexpected amount of brain worms lately. And so although I have vaguely kept up, I just had no interaction spoons left by the time I would get here. So hugs all around for all of your perseverance, no matter how much or little running is going on, you are still pushing for being better, and that is what is great about this group.I think a lot of the worms due to feeling responsible and rather unsupported in keeping my work gals healthy and protected and feeling totally inadequate and unprepared for it. And after trying to clean all day at work, I get home and don’t have any left, so my own space is chaos. Believe the way the boyfriend worded it after hearing about my world versus his was “sounds like you are more stressed than ever, even in these times of calm.” Also probably not being able to travel to get my already sparse dose of in person time with him, doesn’t help.
Combined with that whole thing we have been discussing- where us introverts are getting overdosed on social interactions. Calls to customers were a HUGE example of that. It was amazing how much more talkative they all were than usual. I got way fewer calls done than I wanted to, but a few talked to me for 20-30 minutes, one longer than that. In terms of introvert wins.... when folks are standing too close, I end up looking a totally different direction, so at least I am not respirating their direction during the interaction.... a few get the point and move, but I am finally not getting called out for lack of eye contact!
My mom followed up my sister’s care package, with one of her own. Although, if my sister’s came via teleporter, mom’s came via dune buggy or stunt car or something.... box had definitely seen better days. Not pictured below: She also included a LIFE magazine with a cover article on my weird little town...and some pictures of me as a smaller weirdo. Because moms apparently can’t just send serious stuff in care packages. Hopefully by the time I run out of these care package contents, supply chain has adjusted and I can find these things for myself. But receiving cleaning supplies, and tee pee (it isn’t even one ply- it’s like real stuff!) receiving these things has been a very appreciated but rather unusual example of adult affection.
In actual running news. I was still doing that pretty well... even already beat last month’s fastest mile in my garmin history by like a full minute, and did my first out door no walking running mile in months, if not in a year or two. But running was going really consistently and well... and then winter came back in a big way on saturday, and is staying for a while. So, likely won’t hit goal, but hopefully still will come closer than last month.

I missed catching up much here since the middle of last week and was pages and pages behind. I have read through everything and there has been a lot of good running getting done! I am sorry for anyone who is struggling with running or with life.
I had a brutal run on Saturday. Had problems with one of my shoes that alternated between hurting the top of my foot and feeling like it was falling off. Then one of my toenails started digging into its neighbor toe. I finally had to stop at the bathroom, that thank goodness was open, and get some tp to put between my toes. By the time I got home everything hurt, my toe, my knee and my hips... Sunday I did another Stretch and Roll online class and it seemed to make all the difference in my hips and legs. So today's run was so much better. It was also windy cold. I had a vest on and got too hot so I just zipped it around my waist. Then my ribs and stomach got cold from the wind so I pulled it up a little. Then when I turned to come home I was running directly into the wind and I was of course all sweaty and freezing so I put it all the way back on. Note this is So CA.... and probably not cold at all for any of you! On the good side they have closed the trail parking lots and entrances so the amount of people is way down. I am sure the rainy cold weather is playing a part too but I did enjoy having the trail basically to myself with just a few other runners.
I have been noticing that it is taking me longer these days to get warmed up to where I feel good when I run, about 1.5-2 miles now where it used to just be 1. Also my legs have just been so unhappy and tired. I am not out of breath, my HR isn't up but I feel like I just can't keep going. Not sure what is up with that but I wish it would go away!
I got nothing on on the chaffing issue. I have not really experienced it other than a little spot on my back once in a while from my HRM strap. I was going to suggest putting some coconut oil on it as it seems to promote healing. I do like the idea of putting a pad on it during the normal day to protect it and keep it from rubbing. Maybe using the KT tape to hold it in place!
One (long) comment on the Oiselle Voile. I joined a couple of years ago. I think this is my 2nd or 3rd year. There are lots of discounts during the year over and beyond the $40. It also includes free shipping on everything. That said from a community aspect... not so much. For me the group in LA meets in LA county or near the beach early in the morning with at least a 45 minute drive. In the past 2-3 years there has been just 1 run in my county. I have gone to the Christmas breakfast and it was fun and there was free stuff. Most of the other ladies were friendly and I got to meet the younger sponsored elite 'team' members. Most all of them are young enough to be my daughters. I went to a Christmas lights fun run where they said no one would be left behind, everyone, all abilities welcome, yada yada yada. Fortunately I invited a friend to meet me that I knew ran about the same pace as me or slower. The other ladies took off and within minutes were gone, out of sight and we did not see them again. I am glad I invited my friend or I would have had to just go back to my car - I had no idea even where we were going. So no, as far as an inclusive, supportive running group I would not recommend them at least not the group here. I have plenty of running gear and will not likely sign up again in the fall.
Oh and I hit my marathon for this week and am working on catching up from last week. Won't quite have enough tomorrow but should be all good next week.

Morning all. The sun is back out in London but it’s not quite back to the record temperatures from the weekend. Hit snooze too many times this morning so I didn’t get out until around 7:30am, which meant more people to weave around. Felt pretty good once I got into it though and managed to tack on some extra stretches to my standard route. This includes the steepest hill I used to do every run last year pre surgery - I’ve been avoiding it but managed it yesterday and today. I’m slow but I’m doing it!! Looks like I’ll overshoot my target again this month. Wonder if I can get to my biggest monthly mileage ever?? (Previously 90 something I think)
No other news really. Anxious and fractious at times as I’m sure everyone is. But also blessed and grateful we are all ok.

@hanlonsk I hope you get to see your boyfriend soon. That must be hard. Love the care packages. The stores here are still depleted of cleaning supplies. I did see lots of bleach yesterday, but no wipes, few paper towels, and very little TP. Thankfully, I have plenty of all of those things. I did look in the total opposite direction from that family. I wasn't going to breath in their air. Great job on the running front too!
Sorry you had such a hard run on Saturday @shanaber . I try to keep my toenails cut really short so my nails don't dig into their neighbors. That is so painful. Glad yesterday's run was better.

I love that it’s getting daylight earlier each day! I decided to run this morning instead of this afternoon. I much prefer to run in the mornings but since I’ve been working from home and social distancing I’ve been chicken to run by myself before daylight. This morning I did my cross-training workouts and then headed out around 6:30 and it was already getting light. It was chilly around 36F and a 6mph wind blowing. But there were a ton of birds chirping. I saw lots of cows, a few horses, a few chickens and one bunny rabbit. Only one human who passed by me in a pick-up truck. Due to all the rain we got Sunday night, there were places where the water was running across the road from poor drainage and there were ponds standing in fields that are normally dry. It pushed me to get back home, showered and ready to work by 8:00 am but I made it. Today’s mileage brought me to

Today's run was the Humor Un-Canceled 10K. I guess the weather gods were laughing, because it was 37°F feels like 30°F with 10 mph NNW winds this morning. It was an unwelcome changed from the 62°F - 70°F I had for my long run on Sunday. Tomorrow is supposed to be about the same temperature but not windy so maybe it won't be as cold. And then Thursday should be about 50°F so I am looking forward to that one. Today's run was really nice though. Nothing special or spectacular. Just a nice steady run. I didn't try to race this one even though it was a virtual race. My HM training plan called for 6 miles easy, so I ran this one pretty easy and I enjoyed it. So far my HM for May 16th has not been cancelled yet so I am still trying to stick to my training, but I am enjoying doing the Un-canceled project virtual races this month. I'm pretty sure the RD will wait until the last minute to cancel since he will try his best not to cancel. Last year this race was canceled because of weather, and we waited around for a couple of hours while there were thunderstorms while he waited to see if the weather would pass. So I am hopeful that we will get to run, but I am still expecting that it will be canceled.

Because of Quarantine and staying home my whole family has gone out together the last few times. I’m not following the 10K app anymore just running as they bike. It’s fun actually! I feel like it’s more organic and real for some reason.
Allergies are on high with the tree pollens currently in Portland. If I’m fully drugged up it’s OK.
My weight trend was going down at a consistent rate before staying home started and now it’s creeping back up. I don’t want to end this having a lot of extra work to do in that area. But with nowhere to go it’s easy to make baking a daily activity!
I continue to be motivated by all your posts, and I’ve stuck with running now for longer than any other attempt I have made.

My 10K has not been canceled yet. I expect it will be. My entire family signed up to run or walk it with me and parents are quite upset that the race organizers will not refund their money. I explained to my parents the idea that our race money will keep the race available in this area for the future, but they don’t get that. They want to call their credit cards. Since you all have more experience in this area, is the right thing to do to just forget about the money? It doesn’t seem like a lot of money to me in the big scheme of things, but for my parents it’s currently a big deal to them.
Unrelated, when you post long posts, do you compose in another app and copy and past or type it all out on your phone?2 -

Let them cancel the race before you do anything. They might offer a refund, or deferral or a virtual race. Until they do you really do not know anything.
As for your parents getting their money back, the race most likely made everyone agree to no refunds when they signed up so they are not likely to get it back regardless. Most races are raising money for one cause or another so you might want to remind them of that too.
If I was offered a deferral, I would take that.
If I was offered a refund - I MIGHT take that (times are tight here).
If I was offered nothing - I would just forget it and move on.

I agree with Pastor Vincent. Races often have a clause that they can be cancelled without a refund. Hopefully, they will at least offer a deferral so you can run it later.

Since it's a big deal to the;
you might consider emailing the race director, perhaps they can make an exception and refund or guarantee a complimentary race.
OR, if it were me and the fee not an issue, you might just give them the fee out of your own pocket, but... depending on personalities, this could border on enabling. If they need the money that bad, then say, "let me help out- here's xx$".
OR let them call the CC company. but good luck with that since they agreed to the terms when they signed up.
If the race was a fundraiser, its a tax write-off now. Usually a statement will come.
OR gather them all up, do a home version of the event. print them bibs, buy t shirts and crayola markers and make them pancakes (or take out order) afterwards. Maybe you have old metals for the kids or ones that act like kids.
I always sign-up with the intention of never asking for a refund. I want to support the venue/cause/other runners. so, I've always said keep it when cancellations occur (once, when it flooded at the dinosaur park).
In the end, you can't reason with unreasonable (if that's the case). Let us know how it works out for you/them. good luck.1 -

So setting a new goal and starting again.
I have a 5k run planned for this morning and Hal wants me to go SLOW. I usually run around 6min/k for 5k runs - that's my easy run. Hal wants me to do 8min/k. I can almost walk that fast! So I'm going out, I'll try slow down, but doubt I'll be that slow. It just doesn't feel right. Unless the chaffe plays up. Then I'll be walking haha.

I know how you feel about the pace, the easy pace he demands from before and after the hard parts of speedwork sessions are so slow I'm pretty sure I would have to walk them if I was outside. The fast paces on the otherhand... He wants 200m intervals on Thursday at a speed I don't think I've EVER hit... *gulp*
I'm not sure I could cope with disappointing him!
And I feel you on the eating, having exactly the same problem. I usually refuse to buy biscuits, chips or any sort of junk, while stops it being a problem. But with the family at home adding snacks to the shopping list, and the husband being the one who braves the supermarket and throws crap into the trolley, I'm doomed!5 -

Every race cancellation I've had this year has been according to their pre-stated policies. That is, the ones that said "no refunds" are not offering refunds. Some races have chosen to offer credits or virtual races, which is going above and beyond their policy of "no refunds" and I appreciate it (while understanding that this may not be possible for all of them).
I'm not calling my credit cards because I'm "forgetting about it," I'm not calling them because the race policies were clearly stated. I understand that these are not ordinary circumstances and they were not foreseeable by many. But I've had races cancelled for extreme heat or lightening storms before. It's the nature of racing. I'm unwilling to put a race organization in jeopardy because I refuse to accept the policy that I agreed to.
I say this as someone with a lot of sympathy because I've had to absorb a few hundred dollars and a whole lot of disappointment due to race cancellations this year, but if you can't absorb the cost of a cancelled race then you should question whether or not you should be signing up for races in the first place. At the end of the day, the money is gone either way. We're just in the sadder situation of not having the good memories associated with the race.5 -
@shanaber I love the Oiselle gear I have gotten. The shorts are perfect. I haven't tried many, but I like to keep things simple and inexpensive as I can. The Oiselle volee is tempting, but now just isn't a good time to spend money especially when it means having to connect on another app. I can barely manage the facebook groups I'm in.
On running: I have myself down for a 5K on Thursday evening + another half marathon on Saturday. Saturday is supposed to be a much nicer day so I am looking forward to that.
I have exhausted myself completely trying to help my kids stay caught up with their digital learning. I am STILL GOING TO WORK, so I wish so much that they had just closed for the school year. The digital learning is too much to manage while I am at work and the kids are at home. They have to do their part, yes. But they've never had to do this before either, so it's all very confusing and overwhelming for them too.
I digress.
Running is good.
Yesterday Courtney Dewaulter was on the Uncanceled Project fireside chat live on facebook and it was great. it was so cool to get to listen to her in such small group setting.

I have a 5k run planned for this morning and Hal wants me to go SLOW. I usually run around 6min/k for 5k runs - that's my easy run. Hal wants me to do 8min/k. I can almost walk that fast! So I'm going out, I'll try slow down, but doubt I'll be that slow. It just doesn't feel right. Unless the chaffe plays up. Then I'll be walking haha.
@eleanorhawkins I logged a skipped run on Monday, Hal was so disappointed. He was like, you took a rest day. This will affect your overall score negatively lol
I know how you feel about the pace, the easy pace he demands from before and after the hard parts of speedwork sessions are so slow I'm pretty sure I would have to walk them if I was outside. The fast paces on the otherhand... He wants 200m intervals on Thursday at a speed I don't think I've EVER hit... *gulp*
I'm not sure I could cope with disappointing him!
And I feel you on the eating, having exactly the same problem. I usually refuse to buy biscuits, chips or any sort of junk, while stops it being a problem. But with the family at home adding snacks to the shopping list, and the husband being the one who braves the supermarket and throws crap into the trolley, I'm doomed!
LOL well this morning i got a really amusing message. I gained 4kg (9lb) in the last 2 days - yep I know half of that is glucose stores refilled. The other half is a mix of water retention, food weight, and actual gain. But that number stung.
So I tried to run slower but it just didn't happen. I had way too much energy and it was such an easy run. So I decided to add on an extra km. I was tempted to just log 5k with Hal, but thought no, I'll be honest. I got the following message...
Lol. Talk about deflating! I figure I'll get my points back by the end of the week.
So today I have set a new goal, and am using that resolve. It is good to know that when I carb load for my marathon, I'll be LOADING!! Eep. I know you gain but that was a lot.
Running question, do you carb load for long training runs? My long runs are now just shy of HM length or longer. I'm tempted to take on some extra carbs the night before, though not extreme, just a bit of a boost.4 -
Getting ready to go out for this week’s 4 mile virtual race. It has been a day.My mom is losing it due to isolation. She has been not as sharp mentally for a while but was always extremely active and involved, and the past three weeks she has stopped making sense a lot of the time and is unable to manage her finances and deal with technology. She keeps resetting her passwords because “they won’t work” because she is trying to use the wrong password for the wrong thing. Her bank locked her out because she had fiddled with it enough to trigger an alert. She can’t get into her email because something is wrong with Norton’s so she fiddled with her registry and now it is a big healing mess. Can’t make her stay on topic long enough to do tech support over the phone and she also can’t be trusted to tell the truth about what she has tried and what results she got. For example she tried to pay her bill over the phone and it was declined. This is because her card had been cancelled due to being involved with a scammer. She said it was the new card which had come after that one was cancelled which had been declined, but talked to the bank and turns out they have not yet sent the new card, she was just making up that it came in the mail. When confronted she admits she doesn’t remember getting the new card in the mail but just figured “it must have come because it had been long enough” so she lied and said she remembered opening it.
All of this would be a pain and horrible during normal times but trying to deal with it remotely is almost impossible. At this point none of her bills have been paid, and unlike Memphis power which has put a moratorium on cutoffs, her janky rural power company will cut her off immediately if they don’t get paid. And they won’t talk to me over the phone, just her, so it’s like playing this terrifying game of telephone trying to figure out what to do next.
To top it off the assisted living community where my cousin lives has covid and I can’t get a hold of her to find out if she’s okay.
@quilteryoyo Thinking of you and your similar problems trying to find the keys, Id and so on. Normal problems don’t stop just because of covid. Yikes.10
