Tonya ... 73 pounds released is awesome! Don't minimize that by saying you have hundreds to go ... you don't have hundreds and 73 to go!
SuziQ ... glad the launch is behind you! Sorry that raises/promotions are on the back burner.
Pip ... wow! Hope that everything works out for you in regards to retiring and all that entails.
Barbara ... your tour of the farm sounds wonderful ...
Heather ... congratulations on your lottery win!
Lisa ... sounds like you've made the right decision ... congratulations!
The eating discussion ... I know that I am a binge eater, even within my fasting window. Only because I am stubborn am I able to master it ... most of the time. I eat between the hours of 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm most days ... generally staying closer to 3:00-7:00. Anything later in the day causes sleep disturbances anything early seems to set me off into grazing way beyond caloric needs.
This past week two close acquaintances have lost family members to Covid. Both individuals were in nursing homes. One had health issues, the other was simply elderly. Neither had their families with them when they died. So sad.
Phase 2 of reopening ... if all goes well ... won't begin until June 2. It's about this time that my younger son will head back to Nashville and his apartment, looking for a job. I am going to miss him! Even though my older son's group home is only 3 residents, I'm not certain when the time will be right for my him to head back. Like nursing homes, the problem stems from staff bringing infection in. Still, as much as he enjoys it, I cannot take care of him at home forever...

Rita - LOVE the hat! Especially the little bow under your chin... Good to see you smiling.
Yesterday was honestly wonderful... while Corey was swapping out that 100-pound massive motor without me (He is possibly the only man I've ever met who doesn't insist that I watch him when he fixes stuff... ), I finished moving the bricks. The reason they needed moving is that the next-door crackheads moved out, and left a rather large pile of older bricks half on our land, half on the owner's land. I asked the owner if he wanted them, and he said no, so we got them for free. Well worth moving them. They will be the basis for our flowerbeds that we will build to border the new fence.
Also paid off both cars this weekend - one by selling it back to the dealer, one by sending them a check. Made a good weekend even better.
I'm not dreading, but am really interested to see how my giving two weeks' notice shakes out on Tuesday - I still think it's about 50-50 that they will shut down my access immediately. They just fired the Human Resources Manager on Thursday. She was hired in December, and supposedly doing a great job. The usual all-staff email when someone gives notice is: "We would like to announce that ____________ has left this organization to pursue other opportunities. We wish her well. Her last day will be ______________. We want to thank her for her service."
The all-staff email that went out about the HR manager was: "Today was HR Manager ______________'s last day with the organization. If you are in need of HR support, please contact the HR Generalist."
I'm honestly kind of neutral on the subject at this point. It would be nice to snag one more paycheck, but I've budgeted that I won't, so, what happens happens.
Corey wants help putting up a trellis in his garden...
Later, y'all,
Love,

KetoneKaren wrote: »More on neuroscience and neuroendocrinology:It is absolutely true that some medications used to aide binge eaters alter the metabolism. Naltrexone is one such medication.
Taken out of context, this sounds undesirable, and something to avoid.
When one takes into account, however, that all neuroendocrine medications - Synthroid, Metformin, Insulin, Testosterone, Estrogen, Fosamax, Melatonin, Vitamin D, Calcitonin, and many others - alter the metabolism (that is their purpose), one can, perhaps, put things into proper perspective.
>>>
The best case scenario: One is fortunate enough not to have any type of malfunction of the neuroendocrine system. A person in this category who becomes overweight, for example, can just alter their intake & activity, lose weight, and maintain it with a reasonable effort. This person does not have a malfunction of her neuroendocrine system, and if she backslides, she can fairly easily get back to a good place.
2nd best case: One has a neuroendocrine malfunction, but is able to correct her neuroendocrine malfunction with diet, exercise, and lifestyle. This person works a little harder and has to be more vigilant to maintain homeostasis. If she backslides, she has a harder time getting back to optimal health because the neuroendocrine malfunction is waiting in the wings to be reactivated if she lets down her guard.
3rd: One is able to correct her malfunction with a combination of diet, exercise, lifestyle, and appropriate medication. This person is similar to those in the 2nd category, only she is taking medication.
4th: One is not able to correct her malfunction with diet, exercise, and lifestyle, but chooses to exist without taking medication, perhaps because she is averse to taking medicines that alter her metabolism. This person, if she has already optimized her non-pharmacological efforts, puts a lot of energy each day into managing her condition, yet still receives daily reminders that her efforts are partially in vain. Depending on the condition, these reminders may manifest themselves as elevated blood sugars, sluggishness, dry skin, hair falling out, spine degeneration, insomnia, joint pain, or eating compulsions.
5th: One gives up because diet, exercise, and lifestyle modifications are not enough to control her hypothyroidism, diabetes, low T, bone loss, sleep disorder, Vitamin D deficiency, hypoparathyroidism, or eating disorder, and her best efforts are undermined on a daily basis by an uncontrolled neuroendocrine metabolic disorder, causing despair, discouragement, and defeat.
>>>
Many people on this thread are in the 1st or 2nd category, and have succeeded with diet, exercise, and lifestyle, and do not live with significant daily disruptions that threaten to undermine them.
Some people are in the 3rd category, and need to take metabolically active medications for conditions like hypothyroidism, diabetes, osteoporosis, and yes, eating disorders. There are modifiers other than medications that may help people in the 3rd category (hypnotism, biofeedback, nerve stimulators, specific exercises, surgery, etc.), but often some type of intervention is indicated.
Karen - very interesting! Thank you! I was wondering if something like Naltrexone could be used for a short period of time with some behavior modification (getting our brains to like some new habits...exercise? Meditation - Tai Chi?). Like drugs used for quitting smoking - Chantix is one?
I just threw a temper tantrum because the sprayer is malfunctioning on the brand new gallon of "Liquid Fence" (rotten egg smell) I got at Home Depot. I was going to spray the apple trees to keep the deer away. DH tried to fix it so we both smell like rotten eggs. Showers and laundry coming up shortly.
That blasted sprayer is toast. I'm going to buy some plastic bottles at Walmart and fill them up from that gallon. Out by the apple trees.

Lanette Sorry for your sprayer malfunctioning. How annoying. I've noticed there is often an Achilles' Heel in things like your sprayer that should last a long time; a carpet steam cleaner I was considering buying got some bad reviews because some engineer specified ball bearings that rust. On a water machine. Go figure.
As far as the Naltrexone, yes, absolutely it can be used short-term, just like Metformin can be used for a few months to help with insulin-resistance in women with PCOS, or in a motivated borderline diabetic who just needs a boost; in the case of PCOS, the woman might be trying to get pregnant, and she and her doctor may or may not decide to discontinue the Metformin once it she has been able to conceive. In the case of the motivated borderline diabetic, the Metformin will help to overcome insulin resistance; if the person is successful at altering his or her diet, exercise, and lifestyle enough to correct the metabolic problem, they may be able to discontinue the Metformin, perhaps after 6 months or so, and rely solely on diet/exercise/lifestyle to maintain homeostasis.

A couple of days ago the grandchildren were able to release the Painted Lady butterflies that they had been growing in a kit. They had just been swimming in the freezing sea, so their mum had put them in a hot bath and then their pyjamas. In a previous year they had released Red Admirals.
How lovely!

Love the pics Heather! I remember once when we lived.I'm northern California we had a day of a swarm migrating by. There were millions of butterflies flying by, in our neighborhood. I just.say outside and smiled all afternoon! The one thing I don't miss was in springtime all the spiders came out. They were like parachutes flying all around. Just knowing at the end of all the strings of web flying around there were spiders at the end. Gives me shivers thinking about it!

Hi Gals,
Lisa – firing HR director is not a good sign on what is going on behind the scenes… maybe the walk you out option would be better in the short run, even if the extra pay check would be nice.
Allie – hang in there!
So my camp adventure took a turn and the decision to apply for a grant ended up off the table as Camp wanted to work together with another local non-profit but the staff at camp made such a mess of it that the other non-profit changed their mind. There are other smaller ideas the team and I have come up with, and at this point they are written up and emailed one step above me, they need to be emailed up the chain of command but my direct manager decided to take Friday off and add it to the 3 day weekend. Generally I am 100% supportive of family time and time away from work, but in this case the company is on the edge of insolvency and running away is not helping.
I will be supportive, but not to the level I was as the staff above me is not really invested. I will continue to garden there and collect a paycheck as long as it doesn’t bounce, but I will begin to look at other options also. I continue to ramp up my garden at home and will be moving home some extra plants etc.
I have got a sourdough starter that is making great bread, and I learned to make ricotta – yummy! I love making things from scratch and it is certainly cheaper, BUT the time is a whole different story.
My part of California is opening up but slower than almost everyone else, and honestly I am ok with that. Still 6 feet distance, masks in public areas, no gatherings of 10 or more even with masks and social distance, all hair/nail/massage related stores closed. Restaurants closed, drive thru or curbside pick up ok. And still no crossing county lines. Parks and park restrooms have opened which is good. The opening of schools is still up in the air; both timing and how to provide social distancing.
I do miss eating out, but only did it every 2-3 months.
The thing I miss the most is having company in my home.
Smiles !
Kim from N. California

I remember many years ago when I was much younger and considering moving from my sleepy northern California town to a more metropolitan area, I did an inventory of the advantages of staying and of going and what made the decision for me was that I was treated so well and respected at my job and that was worth far more than anything that I might gain in a bigger city. I just listened to an episode of "The Happiness Lab with Dr. Laurie Santos" where she shares the research on how money doesn't make happiness in a job as much as feelings of autonomy, creativity, and usefulness.
Right now I still don't miss anything except the grind your own peanut butter at the grocery store and the restrooms at the clubhouse in my neighborhood.

We’re in a tornado 🌪 watch it was 24min away now 15min traveling 45 mph. See you gals tomorrow Lord willing. I hate tornadoes always cramp quarters in a laundry room all night afraid to go pee in the bathroom as the power goes y windows shake. It already pulled up my rose bush trellis I just installed darns it! Guess I’ll toss it in the shed later on.

The belated birthday garlicky Chinese meal sounds yummy. I've never had that dish.
When you were travelling, was it business or pleasure? Were you an international teacher, lecturer, or researcher? I have to admit that reading that about you was a revelation. I've only known you as a homebody. Nomad Barbie is a mysterious being to me.

Tonya and Lisa The painted ladies are lovely.

Kim Dang, Girl, it's a good thing you are resourceful and resilient. It's bewildering to think that your upline is not vested in saving your amazing workplace. I wonder what will happen to it all if it goes under? It sounds as if you are not seeing the rolling-your-sleeves-up/all-hands-on-deck mixed metaphor sort of effort one would expect with what's at stake. I don't get it.
>>>
Heather The grandchildren liberating the butterflies are utterly charming. What an amazing experience for them!
>>>
Beth Yes! A limited eating window is a double-edged sword for binge eaters. It helps to limit the amount of food eaten in 24 hours, which helps with weight control, but it is a set-up for a binge because of hunger & delayed gratification, two conditions that tend to trigger bingeing in people who are prone to this disorder. Only the individual can determine if it's the best option - paraphrasing Barbie, the best food plan is the one you can stick to.

Lanette Did you take screen shots from the PowerPoint on that YouTube video the Royal Institution posted of Dr. Marc Lewis on The Neuroscience of Addiction? How did you get the images in the first place?

Lisa: I hope all goes well for you. You’ve been brilliant in your recent job and the smarter people in the organization will regret their foolish action. I love the idea that you will be painting. Your art is lovely.
(((Lanette))): Sorry that the sprayer was not working as it should. Getting sprayed with the Liquid Fence sounds awful. I hope your showers got totally rid of the egg smell. :grumble:
Heather: I love the photos of your grandchildren wetting butterflies free.
(((Allie))): You are a wise and thorough care provider. Talking to your brother sounds like a good choice.
Kim: Your situation in opening slowly is a good strategy, in my view. Oregon is opening slowly, too.
I managed to find lovely ways to enjoy our “bright, bright, sunshiney day.” I took a walk with DH and we ran into a good neighbor. Visiting with her was a pleasure. I’ve managed to donate cans and bottles to a worthy cause, and to buy needed groceries. WIN!

I can be a numbers gal but it's not my go to (sorry all the excel lovers out there) but I do really appreciate it when it is done and done well. So I have been making my own sandwich bread, sourdough and ricotta, I ran the numbers today I have the 3 recipes to the point that I am very happy with them and the results are consistent. Ricotta about 1/2 of the store price, sandwich bread about $1.25 per loaf. A 12 inch round loaf of sourdough is 62 cents! That is just supplies nothing for my time or for power for cooking... I am very pleased to see the savings as they all have a time component. Every time I do them I do get better at fitting them into my schedule.
Amber - hope you are ok, I have never been in a tornado or a hurricane but both seem very scary... I'll take an earthquake every time.

All this talk about sourdough bread has me drooling! lol I was poking around the internet the other day and came across a Robin Hood Flour page with a recipe for Sherwood. Sherwood is a sourdough starter and they actually gave the recipe for the starter. I was going to start it today, but got distracted with something else, but will do it tomorrow. Some of you may remember I tried a starter last year, it was an epic failure, but this one sounds more reasonable in its process. And I do love sourdough bread! Hmmm, this may not be my best plan..... lol
That's all I got today!
Hugs to those needing them, congrats to those celebrating and welcome to the newbies!

SuziQ ‘bout damtime they put it in writing. Can you now include the promoted position in your resume? Or do you have to wait for the $$s?
Tonya thank you for the virtual hug for my friend and her mom, I’ll pass them on. Con VERY grats on your continuing success, 73 pounds discarded. Yes!
Terri what you said about our grandmothers, housework and gyms. Lovely menu, what can I bring
Heather your music sensitivity sounds like it could be debilitating. Could it be just too much input for you?
Machka Have to shake my head at the idea of you being deemed not healthy enough for gym class, but then I read about your rheumatic fever and damaged valves. That would do it. Your bicycling, hiking and running accomplishments are now trebly amazing. your window corner in your tree house home.
Katla Freddie’s here has lifted the restriction against reusable bags so brought mine in today. Count me in with the tree huggers (in fact I’ve invited my friend to come up and hug our trees. She said she’s afraid she’d water them with her tears. Told her that was ok, would do them and her good.)
Allie good luck having that hard hospice talk with your brother.
Tracey Might women’s greater longevity than men’s contribute to their preponderance in care facilities?
Lisa that all-staff email seems coldly generic. Has your council been sued lately?
Amber tornadoes are very scary. Hope it passes quickly and skips damaging your home and community. Karen in Va what you said to Kim about not seeing the all hands on deck effort in her upline. Makes me a little mad that they’ve ignored or self-sabotaged to the detriment of their employees and the community.
Kim I’m so with you on the quake vs windstorm. Guess it comes with the Native Californian territory… Ricotta at half price? Would that work for cottage cheese?
Evelyn ditto about drooling for sourdough, especially Kim’s which will have that Bay Area tang I miss so much.
Best day ever. Slept through ‘til after 5 am, Joe invited me to join him and the dogs at lone ranch, so at 06:30 there we were. Very low tide, had the beach almost to ourselves. Dogs ran and played and rolled in the sand and splashed in the tidepools. Have never seen so many sea stars at this beach, tide must have been unusually low. Great way to start the day. Then church (stayed to sing again in the parking lot), quick nosh of carrots before meeting up with the gals to line dance in the park. Quick trip into Freddie’s for cottage cheese then home. Most steps since February. Got no cleaning done, but count this day as a big success! Only downside is dancing on the concrete basketball court is not friendly to elderknees and ankles. so I’m off to take an aspirin and sleep some more.

Kim - yes, I think you may be right, that there are things of which I'm unaware going on with them upstairs, much like what seems to be going on with your upline management. Hope you have something lined up for replacing the wages they pay, my dear. Shouldn't be hard--I know others need your brand of gardening know-how. I'd fly you to Arkansas if I could, just to point and say "plant that there." I've begun a spreadsheet for prices, as well, so I can figure out where the economies are in the upcoming months. I've got loads of yeast and pounds of flour that I need to turn into bread, and homemade pasta is very easy to make, as well.
Barbara - as far as I know the council hasn't been sued recently, but Arkansas, like all 50 states now, is an "at will" state, so you can be fired at the whim of the employer with no reason given. Montana is the only exception in that you can only be fired at will during your probationary period. There is lots of ground for assuming hiring discrimination, however, as there are only four men on staff, and ALL of them work at the camps. Even the only C-level male is in charge of the camps. It's no better on the diversity side, either, as before the HR manager's departure, she was the only Hispanic person on staff, and there were only three Black women (four percent of the total) working for the organization. I asked the HR specialist, one of my favorite people, and one of the three Black women working, if she felt the organization had a commitment to diversity. I barely got the word out of my mouth before she said "No."
Katla - what a wonderful thing to say, both about the job and my painting. Thank you so much. My ego needed that, as it has taken a bit of a kicking lately, and is sitting under the couch meditating as I speak. It will come out soon, but probably not until it believes it won't have to listen to people who aren't nice to me anymore. Good thing it gets along with the cat! I'm so glad you enjoyed your sunshiny day and got a win for it, as well.
Amber - Hope the storms didn't do much damage and that you're all OK. The same front stretched all the way up by me in Arkansas, but much weaker. Felt like summer all day, roasting us for a while, then basting us with a bit of rain, then roasting us again. Very much tornado weather, but never got organized enough here to be threatening. More thunderstorms coming in today, as well. Another wet spring in progress...
Allie, my dear friend, I'm sorry that the news is not good for Faith, and hope that whatever happens, her departure is as gentle as you can make it. I agree with Katla - your brother seems the best choice to hear the reality of the situation.
On my side of things, my husband reached out and hugged me this morning before he left for work, and I asked him why he was grinning at me. He told me he was just glad to see me happy. I tend to internalize most negative things, but my external aspect gets very still and quiet when I'm very unhappy. Not angry or sad, just blank. It's a protective trait, and all my family has it, honestly--didn't pay to show any form of emotion around an abuser, as our father could twist any emotion of yours into a way to hurt you with it. I think we all regress to a certain extent when we're unhappy, but I hadn't realized I'd dropped that far back.
Funny how I never seem to know how stressed I am until the stress lifts--it's as if I don't even admit it to myself. I suppose it's time to go sit under the couch with my ego and meditate.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR5 -
Machka > That must have been so difficult for you growing up. It seems you were over protected but you don't really understand why? I imagine the damaged valves etc was the reason. It must be hard however to deal with headaches all the time, is there nothing they can do about that cyst? Headaches suck!
You saying "screw that" only shows how strong you are! It was your life and you wanted to live it to the fullest, and you did! Your husbands accident was also a huge hurdle in your life that you conquered. The one thing your mother didn't realise as she was protecting you from the storm was one day you would grow up to BE the storm! You should be very proud of all that you have accomplished!
On another note! Just like you I am crazy about windows! Love windows, love natural light. I also however like to really shut it out when I want those so blackout curtains are a must!

Your grandchildren are adorable, thanks for the pics! I have seen those kits where you can do that but had never actually tried it with my daughter when she was young.
Beth > Thank you, you are right! This is a problem I have had all my life, doing that! Minimising my accomplishments.. I don't know why but I sure wish I could stop doing it, because it is awesome what I have done so far and that is the way I should be looking at it!
Sorry to hear about your close acquaintances that have lost family to covid, it sucks! It is so sad for them not to have had their family there
