@rheddmobile, sounds like a great run! Love the pics!
@skippygirlsmom Great job on your real race!
@kgirlhart Pretty sunflowers!
@portugal2 Welcome!
I am behind on my 100 mile goal for the month towards my run across Georgia. There were a few unexpected challenges this week, including word from hubby’s company about finally returning to work. We’ve spent a good chunk of the last few days dealing with that. I have also been overindulging on food and beverage this weekend. Despite that, I did my weekly weigh-in today and am down another two pounds! Slowly but surely getting back on track with that.3 -

Scheduled rest day today. Back is marginally better, but not good enough for golf. Rain is moving in, so it looks like golf will be a wash out anyway. Can't remember the last time I had two consecutive days of non-running.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?

Race report: virtual Grandma's Marathon (seventh marathon overall, first unsupported)
I did it! Overall, it went really well. I set a specific start time for myself to try to replicate the actual race experience and to avoid afternoon humidity/possible storms, so I woke up and was on the road by 6:45 AM. I put a lot of thought into picking the course and finally went with my normal ten mile out-and-back route (which is along the Mississippi River), stopping by the lobby of my apartment building to fill my water bottles and use the restroom, and then doing my normal three mile out and back loop. Advantages: I knew the course really well, it's pretty flat, and I enjoy the scenery. Also, if I needed some minor medical care like vaseline or a band-aid, I could pop up to my apartment. I was worried about the psychological impact of stopping by my apartment building at mile 20 - what if I was hurting or tired and decided to quit? In the end I decided to trust myself and have confidence I could do it.
Miles 1-10: I was worried about the lack of race excitement, but I was actually pretty pumped. These were the miles where I had to keep telling myself to slow down. It helped that I was seeing lots of other runners and cyclists (not an unsafe number, but just enough to feel like I wasn't alone). I was feeling so good that I almost didn't turn around at mile ten because I thought I could probably just do a pure out-and-back. But I decided against it because I wasn't sure where I could get more water, I wasn't exactly sure of what lay ahead in the next three miles, and I decided I needed to trust my plan.
Miles 10-20: This was a perfect steady ten mile chunk. I didn't have to think much to maintain my pace. I was purely in the zone and was grateful for how closely I'd stuck to my training plan because it was one of the easier mile 10-20 experiences I've had in a marathon. I did two twenty milers during this particular training and I could tell that it had really helped me.
Mile 20: Back home! My bottles had emptied around mile 18, so this was nice. I was getting excited about feeling close to the end (for some reason I always forgot how hard the last six miles usually are, which explains why I keep running marathons) so I had absolutely no problems hitting the road again. I think overall I spent about five-six minutes in the lobby, but I forgot to time it.
Mile 21-22: Woo hoo, I feel great! I'm going to do it! I don't even care that I'm soaked because the humidity is high. I usually hit the wall after mile twenty but clearly this time I won't hit a wall at all and ---
Mile 22-26: Oh no, what have I done? When will this be over? Mile 22-23 was the worst because I was still running away from my house. The only thing that kept me going was that I wasn't going to be the dope who almost ran a marathon but didn't because she just didn't want to run a couple more miles. In retrospect, I probably should have brought one more Gu pack - I took in about 500 calories overall (200 in Tailwind, 200 in Gu, and 110 in Swedish Fish) during the race and that left me with a gap that was a bit too long towards the end. Once I turned around around mile 23 it got mentally easier (after all, I did have to get home somehow), but physically it was rough. I didn't have cramping (which is something I often experience during a marathon), but the tops of my feet hurt and I just wanted to not be running anymore. Once I got back to my building, I did one more loop around the block to complete the marathon distance and then I was done!
Final time: 4:48:33. I was hoping for 4:30, but given the humidity and it being just me, I'm not at all unhappy. If it wasn't for the weirdness of this year, I don't think I ever would have thought of doing this and knowing that I *could*, that's a big deal. It took me way outside my comfort zone.
My tips for anyone contemplating this:
1. Having a specific start time helped me capture a bit of race spirit.
2. If you're the kind of person who is taking advantage of course offerings like fruit or little cups of beer or candy, make sure you're accounting for the absence of those when you're running an unsupported race. I am the kind of person who usually takes in 1-300 calories of "fun stuff" during a typical marathon and I didn't think about how the lack of those would impact my fueling during the last six miles.

I did a tempo run this morning. It's the same run I did last week. I started out at 10:30 - a little later than I had intended to get out. The temperature was 75°F with 78% humidity and a gentle breeze. I did driveway laps, so was in the shade and it didn't really feel too bad. But, I was dripping with sweat when I finished.
I tried to keep my HR in the zones prescribed by Matt Fitzgerald. I had a hard time today. The first 10 minutes of easy warm up I did okay and was able to keep below 150 bpm. But, once I started what felt like a moderate pace all bets were off. I was supposed to keep my HR between 153 and 160. I just couldn't do it. I don't know what was going on. For the moderate section of the run, my HR averaged 174 and then the cool down it still averaged 166. Had I run by feel only, I would have gone a lot faster than I did. I kept trying to slow down to lower my HR. I actually felt like I was going faster than last week, but ended up being 20 seconds slower. Still, I know I felt like it was easier than it was last week. I'll take that as a win since the temp and humidity today were both a lot higher than last time.
I ran three miles and walked one. Even though I do the slower warm up and cool down runs, I still feel the need to do warm up and cool down walks. Probably not necessary, but I think it keeps me from being sore. May just all be in my mind.

@shanaber I just think that is so neat that the crows left gifts. I've never actually seen a crow, we have a lot of grackles around here, but I think they are only about half the size of a crow.My son saw a lot of crows when he was in Sapporo, Japan and he said they were huge and very smart.
@Tramboman Glad the back is a little better. An extra rest day is a good idea.
@mbaker566 I just love Speed Demon's spotted tongue. I'm glad the foster got adopted.
@janejellyroll Way to go on finishing your Marathon all by yourself! I think it would be hard enough at an event with other people, but I'm not sure I could stop by my house at mile 20 and still get back out there.
I did run 6 miles this morning. I usually take Mondays as rest days, but there is a chance of thunderstorms tomorrow morning so I decided to go ahead and run today. Now I'm sure we won't get any storms, but at least I won't spend all day today worrying about whether it will be stormy or not. It was windier than I like this morning and dark and cloudy, but otherwise it was ok. I actually enjoyed the run quite a bit even though it was pretty uneventful. I thought it might even rain some this morning. I felt a few drops of water, but I think it was more just moisture in the air that I was running through and not really any water falling. I always thought I needed a rest day on Monday after my long run on Sunday, but I really do like it when I switch my rest day to Tuesday. I'm planning to rest tomorrow and then on Wednesday it should be nice and not windy.

My dad and I were at Lowe’s Home store buying paint when it opened yesterday morning. I spent most of the day painting a deck for him (Happy Father’s Day) and I’m still not finished. It was hot out (87F) and although not strenuous, I climbed up and down a ladder and the railing and leaned around corners using my core to balance and not fall so I’m counting it as a cross-training day! Heading out this morning, I did not feel like running but I told myself to give it a try and if it ended up being a walk, then so be it. Surprisingly, my pace was no slower than my usual runs have been lately.
@tramboman – Hope your back is better soon. Follow @MobyCarp’s advice and when it feels better, give it another day to recover!
@brittanystebbins95 – Love your pictures! Thanks for sharing those with us!
@janejellyroll – Congratulations!!! You did awesome!
Pictures from my hike to Devil’s Bathtub in the spoiler.We had to cross this creek 13 times during the hike. The deepest crossing was about knee deep and the water was cold!
Luckily we had ropes to help us around this part of the trail.

@Teresa502 Love the pictures. Looks like a great place to hike....maybe a little bit scary in places.1

@janejellyroll Way to go on finishing your Marathon all by yourself! I think it would be hard enough at an event with other people, but I'm not sure I could stop by my house at mile 20 and still get back out there.
Seriously. While I have run those distances in training, I did it by staying farm from home!

@janejellyroll Wow! So impressed!1

Got in five miles this morning, very slow, knee still being obnoxious but not too bad once I got going. @kgirlhart We seem to have the same weather with a slight delay, it was only 77 or so but felt so hot and muggy! It was supposed to storm this morning, but then didn’t, so I’m glad we went ahead and got out there, since it’s supposed to storm tomorrow.
I wish my knee was over itself, I’ve been doing crosstraining as much as possible with lifting and my bike but I miss getting in more miles.
@shanaber I love crows! We have some in the trees at the corner of our street and they always make the same cry as they pass over my yard if I’m out there. I read that crow language is consistent and they have “words” for different threats.3 -
Well on my way to exceed my 50-mile goal this month with a half marathon in hand next weekend. I've cleared 60 a couple months back so I might be aiming for a 75-mile month this summer for the first time. Just trying to avoid overuse injury as I've been prone to in the past.

Hmm... worked a bit late, but I can still get a short run in...
*checks the weather, thunderstorm almost here*
Yeah, as I was thinking. Today is a rest day.3 -

^^^this! When I did my HM on the treadmill it took ALL my willpower and a lot of stern self-scolding to climb back on the thing after I had to stop for a pee after around 10 miles. VERY impressive!

Oh man, once I get off the treadmill it's almost impossible for me to get back on. I tried to do an eighteen miler on one once during a thunderstorm. That run was over as soon as I had to stop to refill my water bottle (I think it was mile eleven or so?). Lesson learned!
If I do another virtual marathon, I don't know if I will tempt fate like this again. If I had felt the way at mile 20 that I felt at mile 22, I don't know if I could have held out.3 -

@Tramboman how is your back?
Finished The Uncanceled Project this weekend! Just did a 15K then a 10K. Officially, I cut back and stuck to my planned miles for maybe the first time ever. As in, I didn't run more miles than I set out to do but had not planned to also run on Sunday, which I did do.... so.... I still kept to my mileage, kinda.
It started raining right when I showed up to run yesterday but I ran in it anyway and it was fine. The breeze was great. Only thing not great was when the sun came out after the rain - so humid! I think I am acclimating to the heat, though. It really doesn't seem too awful. The handheld definitely helps. The run on Saturday was just ten miles and it was early in the day - there was a race already happening - Miles for Mercy - so I ran with the runners already there. it was just a 5k, so I didn't stick with them, but it was nice to see other humans for a change. Lots of distance between each one, so that was also cool.
New running shorts come today! So does the Spring Energy sampler. I am going to need to get more gels and skratch or tailwind or something - I believe I have grossly underestimated how much I would use. Every five miles or so, but running consecutive days means more consumption - of course.
I think I need to revisit the Summertime Binge schedule. 20 miles after a 22 mile day sounds horrific. I'll be happy to just be walking at all after 22, I think. I say this because yesterday, I did A LOT of walking and it was just six miles. After a ten mile day. My quads were just so sore. Anyway, I can revisit, adjust, adapt. There is no minimum of miles to run in the ten days - just as many as I can.
We shall see!
