I use spotify. I do pay for premium so I am not sure what is for pay and what isn't, and I do have unlimited data. But I believe when you download the songs they don't use data, but you might double check that. But I believe I can listen to some of my playlists when I am in an area with no internet available.1

Thanks everyone. I'm going to play around with Spotify this weekend and probably call that my workout. Maybe it will help me mentally check out and let my mind rest a little. If I get frustrated, I'll stop and just read a good book.
@katharmonic 95% humidity sounds just awful. You did great getting in 6.3 miles.
That reminded me. Yesterday, when I was driving home I had the GPS on on my phone because the app I have warns me of hazards/police/vehicles stopped on the interstate. For some reason it told me that my exit was 6.2 miles ahead. My first thought was, "Oh. 10K. I could run that."5 -

June Total: 44.84/60 Miles
Passed my total mileage from last month. 7 miles is the furtherest I’ve run this year and it was hard but felt good when it was done! It feels really good to be back in training mode.6 -
@Shortgirlrunning Great run! Are you following any training program? Are you training for a half? I'm try to train for a 10K.0
-
@ABabilonia - I’m training for a half in (hopefully) September! I’m using Hal Higdon’s novice 1 half marathon training plan. I’ve used his plans in the past and always enjoy them.2

@quilteryoyo I've tried Spotify a few times, you have to have the premium version to download to your phone/watch. Premium also allows you to play any song you like, skip songs multiple songs in a play list, and probably a lot more. Oh it's advert free.
I paid for 3 months of premium yesterday cause we used it for music at the party and I didn't want adverts. Other than the occasional use though, I'm not that bit a fan. On long trips I'll put the Disney play list on for the kids, and we play a game, "guess the movie".
I tried it on my watch but HATED it. Granted I was trying podcasts, but it was so annoying. It would always reset to the beginning of the track if I stopped it half way through a run. And syncing was a nightmare.2 -

78 of 100 miles
Skip and I ran today in a race, like with people. It was a 5K/10K trail race (I did the 5 she did the 10) at the local state park. They did a great job at keeping us separated, we started in groups of 25 leaving every 10 minutes, first group at 7:00, we had the 8:30 slot. It was good we got to sleep in a bit. About 15 seconds before the start they told the “people who normally place etc to move forward” because the start was going to be more narrow, we know this trail really well and I told Skip go to the front when you hit the creek the drop and back up is going to slow people you need to be ahead – yeah I’m a bit competitive ha ha. They asked people not to come too early, not to bring people if you weren’t running, not to hang around etc. They didn’t posted results or give out awards there, but they were running live on their website, packet pick up was out in a field so they could control the length of the line, you had to sign a health waiver. There was hand sanitizer everywhere (even at aid stations), they gave you a gaiter if you wanted to wear it (no thanks). Aid stations had bottled water only (they usually have snacks too), the finish line had bottled water only, medals and water was handed to you at the end by a volunteer in a mask and gloves. After I was done I stood near the finish in one spot I found confusing when I got there where to go, so I was able to see Skip sprinting out of the woods, proud momma moment. I was actually very happy with my race, my time was 47 and change for just over 3.2 the elevation wasn’t much since they consider the 5K a beginner race. I had to laugh that I ran a faster there than I have been on the road, so figure. The 10K has a big climb followed by another that was the one spot that slowed Skip down, oh yeah and falling twice ha ha, her legs and both arms were filthy when she got back. She ran it in 1:05.05 winning first place in her 20-29 age group and the second place girl was 1:05:20 so close. Of course because of the staggered start you had no idea where anyone was. Some guys passed me and turns out there started earlier and were running the 10K. I was pretty much alone running, which was fine because I run that course all the time alone and it’s cool with me. I finished in the lower half of my age group, but was just happy to be in a race, with my friends and Skip and I always love seeing her in her element. One of the local high school XC/T&F coaches was there, of course we know him though it wasn’t here high school, he asked her to start coming to his practices to help out. He said it would give her folks closer to her age to get her runs in with and give him some adult eyes out there too. She told him she would call him, though I know she’s hard pressed to work with another school than the one she graduated from, it’s actually the second school that’s asked her to help this summer. Anyway fun morning.
TL:DR
Skip and I ran a trail race today, I ran the 5K and had so much fun, she ran the 10K and won her age group.
Love their medals and here’s a picture for you Rocket City Marathon folks
70 miles is awesome @ABabilonia the heat has been real for sure
@HonuNui I’m virtually running 380 miles from our town to Gulf Shores by 9/7, I’m halfway done, we started second week of May
I got 3 months of Amazon music for free for I’ve been listening to that. I like it so far.
@quilteryoyo “I can run that” that is so funny. When I moved to a new office I told a friend it’s like 10 miles from home (which for some reason is 1,000 to people her) and she said that far, I said I could run to work with no problem LOL
@Shortgirlrunning awesome on the 7 miles

@skippygirlsmom Yeah for a real race and that you both had fun. Congratulations to Skip on her AG win!
Thanks everyone for the help/ideas about Spotify. I was able to deduce that you DO have to have premium in order to download the playlist and, thereby, listen without internet or using data. They have a 3 month free trial, so I signed up for that. I should know by then if I like it/use it enough to pay for it. Interestingly enough, the free trial is over the day after what would have been my HM, had it not been canceled.

Congrats to Skip and you, too, mom!!!1

This! Just too bad your medals are printed backwards!2 -
Two hour cruise around the neighbourhood this morning. Wanted to get an hour in before meeting my running club at 7:45 so that meant a start in the dark. Fortunately, being Sunday, there was zero traffic so I ran in the road under the streetlights. However, it’s the longest night tonight, so that means we’re on the downhill run to summer!5
-
@T1DCarnivoreRunner - Rocket City has been my slowest marathon to date! I wasn’t ready for that Alabama humidity.
@skippygirlsmom - I will have to look at my shirt to recall what year I ran it. You may have been working it. The day after the race we walked around and looked at a bunch of decorated Christmas trees. Great memories! Congratulations to you and Skip on a great race today!
@quilteryoyo - you deserve those soup beans tomorrow! Hope you can relax rejuvenate!
@Avidkeo - I bet you are the envy of all the other moms with your cake decorating skills!5 -
@T1DCarnivoreRunner - Rocket City has been my slowest marathon to date! I wasn’t ready for that Alabama humidity.
@Teresa502 For me, the humidity wasn't bad (it was Dec. anyway...). I grew up in Iowa where the summer humidity and heat is some serious stuff. I'm now living in west Tennessee where the summer heat and humidity is pretty much exactly the same as Iowa. To be fair, Iowa can have brutal winters also. We skip winters here.
The month before Rocket City, I started experiencing injuries (non-insertional Achilles tendinitis, then peroneal tendinitis, and then an ankle sprain). The weekend before the Rocket City Marathon, I ran my 2nd slowest (at the time) marathon to date at the St. Jude Memphis Marathon... about 13 seconds faster than my 1st marathon IIRC (my Personal Worst / PW up until then). Finally, a little more than 2 weeks after Rocket City (my new PR), I ran a new PW by more than 12 min. at the New Year's Double - New Year's Eve Marathon in Allen, TX.
How I got a PR sandwiched in between 2 terrible marathons, I'm not entirely sure. My best guess is a combination of traveling for work that week to VT without much time or opportunity to run while traveling (i.e. a forced taper week?) and also that I started using an improved (custom) electrolyte replenishment strategy. I've continued to use that strategy, but haven't been able to duplicate those results. I usually end up slowing down significantly in the 2nd half of a marathon, but for some reason was able to just push and keep going strong all the way that time.

Been awhile since I posted my progress, so just catching up.

Hmmm wondering if I was right in this interaction...
Doing a 5k run yesterday, on footpaths in my area. As I passed the 3k mark, a guy was outside with his two dogs, both were greyhoundish (I don't know dogs, am actually afraid of them after my cousin was mauled by a couple of dogs when I was about 9). It appeared to be his home he was outside of, but he was on the footpath not on his property.
The dogs ran at me, and jumped up on me. I stopped, and using my best mum voice told the dogs "down". They got down but the owner said "you don't have to talk to them like that" or something to that effect. I had earphones in so wasn't 100% sure, but he was definitely telling me off. I said what? Incredulous he was telling me off. He said something else, not sure what, but clearly telling me off still. I said. "look, im just running here. It's your responsibility to control your dogs" then kept running, ignoring what ever else he said.
Was I out of line? Or would you have done something similar?
For the record I'm a bit nervous about running past there again but damned if I'm going to let a situation like that scare me off.5 -
@Avidkeo You were not out of line at all. I think you handled the dogs well by telling them firmly to get down. The owner should have done that himself. If it had been me I would have done the same except since I carry pepper spray I would have told the guy that if his dogs ever jumped on me like that again I carry pepper spray and I would spray them. But I am on Texas, not sure how NZ feels about pepper spray. But you handled the situation well and the dog owner was an *kitten*.2

Sadly...
Pretty blunt there haha.
This happened on one of the little side streets by my house. Its not the first time I've had dogs jump me, had a couple of little Jack russle type dogs as well, and also responded by telling them to go home.
Might start just skipping this street, it's not worth the headache - being only around 300m long0 -
Just did 1.8 miles tonight, and it was intervals because I brought my husband along. I didnt mind having to walk with him. I was happy for his company. I did let him run ahead of me and the dogs, though, and with them trying to chase him, I had to work twice as hard to keep my pace slower and got some nasty Braxton Hicks from it. So I think next time he joins me, either I will take the lead with them, or they can stay home.
Only ten more miles till goal for this month.
We got our pictures done earlier this week. Only 9 more weeks until we meet our little man!7 -

You did the right thing, and if that street is a reoccurring problem like it sounds, I would definitely skip it.2 -

You did the right thing, absolutely. Dog owners can sometimes be clueless and often simply can’t fathom that some people don’t like dogs as much as they do. The correct protocol (here in NZ), should it happen again, is to contact Animal Control. You may not be the first this has happened to and the animals may already have a record. Animal Control will can go and talk to the owner if they think it warrants it (they’re pretty good about this kind of thing), and if it happens repeatedly then they will confiscate the dogs or fine the owner.4 -
@avidkeo I thought that might be the case for pepper spray in NZ. I would probably avoid that street.
@brittanystebbins95 Beautiful pictures! And great run too.1 -

No, you were not out of line at all. For the past couple weeks, I've had a dog come out and chase me every time. I've had to stop running to get the dog to stop chasing. Even when I'm walking slowly, it still barks and acts like it is going to try to bite me unless I yell and chase it in return. At first, I thought it was loose and far from home because I had never seen it before. But since, I have noticed it actually lives in the same yard as 2 other smaller dogs that I've seen before and just bark at me from the other side of the fence. This must be a new dog for them. Anyway, I've figured out how it is getting through the fence and keep thinking that I need to spend the time to knock on their door (which will screw up my run just as does having to stop and argue with the dog). My number 1 rule is to look out for number 1 (that's me). I don't want to, but if I must, I will stop the dog before it hurts me. It's safest for that dog to make sure it can't get past that fence.4 -

5 hot hot kms this morning. I'm so over summer already (and it's only June!) At least today's the longest day of the year and now we get the long slow decent into winter.. @ContraryMaryMary Funny what we look forward to.
Took a nice tumble tripping over a bump in the road. Somehow managed to not land on my face. Scraped up a bit but injuries are too minor to show off. One nice elderly lady walking her grandson offered to pull me up, but I was super sweaty by then and didn't want to ick her out.
@Avidkeo What you did was absolutely correct and that person was just an *kitten*. I'm glad Beijing has a really strict policy on leashing dogs.
Adjusting my monthly goal down to 70km. The 100km just isn't happening with the weather and all the strength training I'm doing.7 -
@pastorvincent - you can connect Alexa to your Spotify account too. I have many playlists set up in Spotify now and while I also have Amazon music at no cost, I rarely if ever, use it.
@Avidkeo - I agree with everyone else that the owner was in the wrong and should have controlled his dogs. I am a dog person and I would have been frightened by them too. You can also put your knee up into their chest if you need to to keep them from jumping on you. Depending on the dog, turning your back to them can also work but often they will just come around you. I am much more afraid of the small dogs (Jack Russell terriers especially) because I don't feel like I really have much of a defense with them.
@brittanystebbins95 - the pictures are beautiful!
@skippygirlsmom - congratulations to you and the Skippy Girl! The race sounds like fun!
Haven't posted my runs for a while. I have kind of slacked off on my strength training at home because of boredom but am working at getting back into it. The online class I was enjoying through my gym was discontinued so I have been trying a few new ones to see if I can find another one that I like.

Good tips, I'll remember the knee one, thanks! And yeah, just going to avoid the street from now on1 -
Dogs are the possibility that scares me the most about running in the countryside as opposed to down towards the beach and town. This is probably really dumb, but I'm far more scared of encountering (or at least less confident about much chances against) a problematic dog that a problematic human. I've come across dogs on their own on trails a couple of times (including once when one just stood in the middle of the track and stared at me, causing me eventually to take a massive off-trail detour/climb/scramble to get round it!) My family have always had dogs but when I was about 17 a German Shepherd at the stables where I worked went nuts and ripped half a colleague's forearm off for no apparent reason, so yeah, I don't really trust them unless I know them very well now.
On another note, after the discussion about Hal the other day, I actually went out and intentionally disobeyed him yesterday! I was supposed to do 8km... planned to do 9 for various reasons but ended up doing 10. His comment regarding the run was 'easy tiger!' then he dropped me from an A to an A- and told me I'm overtraining. Sigh, yes sir.
Went to Decathlon the other day and got some electrolyte tabs to stick in my water, and a really nice lightweight sleeveless running shirt. I think I'm going to have to go back for some more, it's awesome! I would never be bold enough to run in a bra but it's the next best thing and makes me feel decent but not so hot lol.

Yes, there is a level of Amazon music included with Prime, but it only gets you part of their catalog. If you want all the music (which you do not need since you pay for Spotify) you have to pay extra.
If your curious, you can read about it here: Amazon Music Unlimited

Race Report! Ran the Summer Solstice Virtual 5k Saturday with my husband.
We got out at 6 am which is when the place we park opens. I had spent Friday with possible food poisoning and was still feeling kinda like I’d been hit by a truck, so wasn’t expecting a pr. Since this race (part of a series put on by a running store) doesn’t even had a way to post results, just pictures, we agreed that whatever happened, happened, and we would just have fun with it. They did have virtual bibs to print out, so we wore bibs, laid out all our race clothes the night before, I wore my lucky race headband and singlet, and we did everything to give it a sense of occasion like a real race.
I also had new shoes! Well, used shoes. But new to me. And I’m so happy! The Brooks adrenaline gts 18 really worked for me much better than the 19 and 20 versions, and since I wear a common size I haven’t been able to find new 18s for two years now. I got this pair on eBay. It’s hard to tell the condition of previously worn shoes from photos, but it looked like they were brand new, not perfectly pristine on the soles but still with all tread intact, including the microtread on the heels and toes, which usually goes for me after about ten miles of wear. And because they inexplicably had no shoelaces they were very cheap, only 40 bucks where other, more worn pairs were selling for 80 and up. Heck, I can swap the shoelaces out of my old pair! So, they arrived, and they were perfect, just like they appeared in the photos. I can only assume someone wore them once and hated them. Weirdly they came with no laces in the shoes but one single shoelace in the box. There has got to be a story behind that. So, the rule is nothing new on race day, but I figured they couldn’t be worse than wearing my old shoes with half the tread gone, or my 20s which make my knees ache.
Running at just after dawn on a Saturday we had the road almost completely to ourselves. We ran the railroad access road we have been using for all our virtual races. While racing we passed the elderly gentleman walker who is always out in the mornings, and a group of bicyclists, and that was it, not even a single car.
We went out with the intention of running about 30 minutes. My tummy didn’t bother me, fortunately, but I did still feel a little kicked around, and it caught up to me after the first two miles. So we slowed way down for about half a mile, caught our breath, then finished strong. Not a good time for us, 31 minutes, but on pace except for that one slow interval. I set mapmyrun to call our our pace at half mile increments instead of a mile, and that worked better for pacing.
During our last sprint for the finish, something funny happened. A big crow flew across our path, very slow to the ground, followed closely by a gray fox! And behind the fox was a second crow, presumably the mate of the first, chasing it! I don’t know what happened to set this off, whether the fox thought he could tackle a full grown crow and found himself in over his head, or maybe attempted to plunder a nest, but that second crow was taking out after him. I was very hot and sweaty by then and my knee felt like it was taking a pounding, so I yelled, “Run like a fox!” and tried to channel the delicate way the fox bolted across the road, as if his little feet barely needed to touch the ground.
Afterwards, my husband and I staged fake “finish photos” for each other, and I put a flower in my hair, and we walked back to the park and got in a good nature walk. By that time, more runners had emerged, and several people called out to ask what race we were doing and complain about the heat. Having other runners see and comment on our bibs made it feel more like doing a real race. The medals are cute - they are sun catchers - and should arrive in the mail in a week or so.
My husband made another little comic book about our race.8
