WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JULY 2020

Morning, afternoon and evening, all...
Barbie - thank you for supplying our clean slate, our reset button, our 'put on your big girl panties and do it' haven each month. You are a rock...
KJ - So good to see you, and the pics are just awesome... Glad to see your grands.
Luci - Ditto!
My goals for June were:
👍 Survive the continued re-opening of my state without getting cooties. So far, my county has seen 91 cases and no deaths. The next county over, where everyone goes to shop, has seen 226 cases and 2 deaths. The population there is approximately double as well. No cooties yet in my house, to my knowledge. Even more pleasing, I'm seeing more and more people with masks in the grocery store. Well over 50 percent in my county, and probably 3 out of 4 in the next one over the few times I've ventured over.
👍 Held us to a budget for June, and we're going to do just fine. My husband was quite surprised. We still know how, we just haven't flexed that muscle in quite some time because we haven't had to. Now we do.
👍 Be lighter going out than I am going in. June 1, I was at 215, June 30, I was at 209. This morning, I'm at 208. A win any way you look at it. 😁
Goals for July:
🚪 Continue to survive the pandemic.
💲 Stay within budget.
⚖ Be lighter going out than I am going in.
Love y'all,

Happy July 1st! Here we go!
Kelly - loved those photos of the kids watching the road crew, and mud fun, lol. Brought back childhood memories of thunderstorms in Indiana - our farmhouse was on a slight hill so immediately after a rainstorm would pass, we kids would be out there launching teensy paper boats in the little "rivers" down our lane. If it wasn't so (thankfully) damp outside right now I'd be out drinking my early morning coffee on the deck with you.
I'm also mesmerized by our garbage truck, lol. How those mechanical arms snake out, grab the can, hoist it up, dump the trash and set it back down. Pretty cool when you think about it. A big hat's off to those garbage truck divers who don't accidentally latch on to the mailbox which is only a couple feet away.
Karen in VA - your herb planter is spectacular! Your sage looks great, as does your basil and other goodies. I have volunteer lemon balm now, and I'm stunned I've been able to raise basil from seed. It loves being in the greenhouse which often gets up to 90 or more. I just keep watering it and misting it. Crossing fingers.
Debby in VA - loved the description of your flowers, we have many of the same but seems they are a month behind you. I suppose you all are eating fresh tomatoes too, lol. Hope to have some little Sungolds in the next couple weeks, they might be late due to our cool weather streak.
Barbara - I popped some sage seeds into little germination pots yesterday, let's see if they do anything getting warmed up in the greenhouse. Growing them for the flowers sounds perfect even if I don't like sage...but come to think of it, I've never had it fresh before. Your morning at the beach with Tumble & Joe sound familiar. My DH has done similar in the past, and it's taken all my strength to not turn that beach air blue, lol.
Katla - I think you hit the nail on the head about your dog picking up on your anxiety and getting anxious- panting. I've seen it many times with some of our dogs throughout our lives.
And many thanks to Barbie for launching us into July
My goal for July is to get back into the Tai Chi/Qigong and SWSY on a more regular basis, and so far so good this past week. Also keeping on a 12-16 hr "fasting" mode for my brain's sake if nothing else.
Yesterday I bopped into town early for shopping.... Walmart was nutty (self checkouts weren't taking cash anymore - they said coin shortage!) Discovered that after I'd unloaded my cart onto the belt. Loaded everything back up and re-entered a LONG checkout line with cashiers, carts in front of me overflowing. Then searched my purse again and found my old Discover Card (I normally just use the Visa at the gas pump and online so it stays safely hidden in my car). So pulled out of that line and back thru the self-checkouts. I've been anxious to get in and out of that store (and most stores) in record time to limit exposure to cooties! Spoiled my plan, lol.
Luckily was able to grab everything I needed and won't have to make a trip to town for a week.
Looks like cootie cases are going up- it's mostly "youngsters" under 50 who aren't being hospitalized. We older folks are doing something right, which is great news.
Dog #1 needs to eat so I better get going.
Make it a fabulous day!

Here's hoping we all have a great July!
Thanks for the new thread Barbie, was it just me or did June seem to go on forever?
I don't normally post goals for the month but think I'll pinch one from Lisa in AR "be lighter going out than I am going in" I liked that one - thanks Lisa I have actually lost 2lb - haven't lost anything in years, keep putting the same two pounds on then off, but this time I'm determined to keep it off for good.
I'll do my best to keep up with you all this month.
Keep safe and well

Machka in Oz0 -
Hello ladies.
I am happy to report I am down by 1.2 pounds from my ending weight in May. In May I had a slight gain. I am getting back on track and meal planning and choices are getting better. I also think the decision to lower my goal has assisted here – I was going back and forth trying to decide what I wanted my ideal weight to be. In the beginning of May I was a little under goal and I felt so much better than later on during the month. June was definitely a month of attitude adjustment. This just reinforces we are all very individual and not one goal or plan works for everyone. We must tune in to our inner voices, feelings, health situations, etc. in order to make sensible decisions for ourselves.
Barbie – Thank you for pushing us in to July. Like you I have got to get back to the basics that have served me so well in the past. Measuring cups and spoons have moved back on to the counter instead of hiding in my cabinets!
Cheri – Love the new profile picture. Great haircut!
RMarlow65 – Welcome. You will not find a more supportive group of women. Visit often and jump in when you are comfortable.
Rebecca – I just love when people have to voice their opinions. Although your friend may have been trying to be helpful. I feel FB commentary is just filled with drive-by comments and is not a good place to have a real conversation.
Katla – Glad to hear everything worked out and your test is in your rearview mirror!
Kate – I agree with you. My “first” visits were like episodes of the “Twilight Zone”. Sending positive thoughts you are able to schedule a hair appointment.
KJ – When I grow up I want to be one of your kids! Seriously. You plan such wonderful days for them. You have touched so many lives and I am sure all of those under your care have or will move on to being positive and thriving adults.
Lisa – Slow but sure wins the race! Love the Levi pic. He is getting so big!
Allie – Happy belated birthday!
Pip – Sending positive thoughts that your place sells quickly and for top dollar! Lovely pictures.
Kim – So very happy for you and your new order! Sending positive thoughts this engagement turns in to many more!
Katla – I am not sure I would be happy wearing a mask while doing yoga since so much of yoga is based upon proper breathing techniques.
Viv – So sorry to hear about your kitty.
Rita – Love the bee pictures.
Heather – There are things we can live with and things we can live without. DH’s elder daughter sounds like me. If I was home all day working I would expect (not wish) my partner would be picking up the household slack. I was so very fortunate to have found Charlie. We always shared the responsibilities and picked up the slack with either one was busier than the other. And, there is no reason why you cannot stay in touch with Sam.
Okie – Love the deer pictures. They seem to make themselves right at home!
Julie – Welcome. It helped me to cut my big goal in to little ones. And, we all want a magic bullet, but slow and sure wins the race!
Time for me to sign off for now. I hope everyone is having a great day!

Machka in Oz3 -
Barbara I finally came to the conclusion that I can't walk the dogs with Jake. We have very different ideas of the right way to do it and he tends to give me directions about how to handle the dogs as though I have had no experience and need some lessons.
We are still staying close to home. Jake ventured out for a haircut at a time when the salon wasn't busy. Now he's worried that it might have been a mistake. This week he made the decision to postpone his July dentist appointment to October and to call the cardiologist in Seattle and ask if the tests they have scheduled for him in August can be done over here so he doesn't have to make the two hour each way trip to Seattle. The first test has already been set up for tomorrow in the same building where we go for lab work and imaging locally.
Somebody asked about bone density testing. The test is really simple but they ask that you wear clothing without metal so I had to buy a pair of sweat pants just for the test.
Rebecca, the story about your food pictures is a perfect example of why I love this thread and gave up Facebook years ago. I need support in my life and I get it here.
I met our soon to be new neighbor yesterday. She was meeting with the current owner to go to the title company to sign papers. I was so excited to see her that I babbled a lot.
I love the goal to be lighter at the end of the month. The only way I'll get there is to be mindful every day of portions and choices. Goals are no good without a plan to get there.

Tips that have worked for mePut your current numbers into MFP
Select sedentary as your activity level
Choose how much you'd like to lose (i.e. 1 lb/week)
MFP will give you the number of calories to eat
Eat those calories
... and weigh (with food scale) and log every bite.
A few extra things have helped me along the way:
1) Exploring my grocery stores and markets to find delicious, filling low calorie foods. It's amazing what's out there.
2) Exercising as much as possible. Exercise gives me extra calories to work with so that I can have things like pizza now and then ... but to keep my sanity and not wear myself out, my exercise quantity varies as does what I do for exercise.
Also, I tend not to eat all my exercise calories back.
If I've just done a little bit of exercise like a 3 km walk or something, I'll eat about 50% of my calories back.
If I've done a moderate amount of exercise like a 5 km run or 50 km bicycle ride, I'll eat about 75% of my calories back.
If I've done a lot of exercise, like a half marathon or a 100 km bicycle ride, I might eat about 90% of my calories back.
3) Eating how I want to eat. This is where everyone is different ... some people prefer to employ fasting, others like high protein diets, some like vegetarian diets, some like to eat 2 or 3 meals a day, others like to graze. Go with what works for you.
Personally, if I had to define what I do, my diet is probably most similar to a Mediterranean diet with a vegetarian lean ... and I'm a grazer. I also have to adjust what I do depending on my cycling events ... they're tricky because I need the fuel without going overboard.
And stick to it for 5 weeks, then reassess how things are going.
Regarding Cheat Meals
When I was on a mission to lose weight in 2015, I never went over my calorie limit. I stuck to the plan like glue. And I lost the weight.
But I broke it up into weeks. When I started I had 16 weeks until we were going to Canada so my plan was to stick to the calorie limit for 16 weeks and then take a 1-month break while we were in Canada. I did that and lost 15 kg in that time. After the 1-month break, I eased back into it for a couple weeks, upped my calorie limit slightly, and then stuck to it like glue for the next 16 weeks in which I lost 11 kg and took me close to Christmas when I took another break for about a month.
10 Things to Stop Doing If You Want to Exercise

January's 2020 GoalsIt is difficult to make goals because I'm not sure what's going to happen one day to the next. I plan, God laughs ... or something like that. The last couple years have been a lesson in patience and flexibility and giving up a lot of what I would like to do in the interests of what needs to be done.
However, I do have some goals I'd like to accomplish, if possible ...
How to Set SMART Goals for 2020
SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely.
https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/smart-goal-setting
Interestingly, he talks about 7 significant areas ...
Financial Goals: Start saving for retirement, get out of debt, or use a monthly zero-based budget.
Spiritual Goals: Pick up a new devotional, start a daily journal, or plug in to a group at your church.
Fitness Goals: Hit the gym more often, take the stairs, and remember to eat your veggies.
Educational Goals: Go back to finish your degree, get your MBA, or read a good book every month.
Family Goals: Plan one-on-one dates with your kids, have a standing date night with your spouse, or make it a point to call your mom and dad on Sunday nights.
Career Goals: Work toward a promotion or raise, learn something new about your line of work, or polish up and send out resumés if you’re looking for a new career path.
Social Goals: Say yes when someone invites you out to lunch or a social gathering—or, for some of us, say no more often.
I've modified this slightly ...
Organisation/Financial Goals -- Getting our taxes done and other paperwork in order.
Spiritual Goals -- I'd like to start attending church a bit more regularly. I'll also include relaxation and recreation in here. Down time. I get very little of that at the moment and need more. For me that might be sleep and photography.
Fitness Goals -- Exercise, Eating, Sleeping -- Working up to running 5 km at least a couple times a month. Working up to cycling 50 km at least once a month.
Educational Goals -- Uni! I would like to finish my Master's degree in 2020.
Family/Medical Goals -- Husband -- Never-ending stream of medical appointments + projects with 2 or 3 different organisations. And me! A goal is to get me into healthy shape again!
Career Goals -- One of the main things my area is planning to work on is streamlining the processes a bit. Meanwhile I need to learn a lot more SQL and as much about what 2 different people I work/worked with did. I'm also on the board of two organisations now. Both interest me a lot, but I'm also hoping that taking on leadership roles might help advance my career a little.
Social Goals -- Cycling Club. I've made a detailed list of what I need to do, which helps.
-- My Personal Website -- I have started working on this. I'd post it here, but not sure if I can: machka . net This has a social aspect in that we go to Wordpress meetings now and then.
A little bit about me ...I'm Machka and I am in Tasmania, Australia.
Some of my favourite hobbies/sports/activities include:
-- cycling
-- walking
-- hiking
-- running
-- reading
-- working on my website
-- photography
I bake, but don't cook, sew, knit, garden, etc.
Most of my day is spent working with health data, "attending" university (online now) working toward a Masters in IT, doing homework, and spending time with my husband (who suffered a severe traumatic brain injury 2 years ago) and new kitty, Rhody.
My husband is not able to work anymore, so one of his main activities is gardening. He works at that at his own pace and we've got quite a lovely garden of flowers, fruit and veggies.
This is Rhody ... an all black, 10-month old "domestic" who joined us just 3 months ago.
I joined MFP in February 2015 and promptly lost 15 kg, took a 1-month break, then lost another 11 kg. By Christmas 2015, I was down to a weight I hadn't seen in quite a few years ... since my early 30s.
In 2016, 2017 and the early part of 2018 I maintained while increasing my cycling. My sport, within cycling, is ultradistance cycling: Audax, Randonneuring, 24-hour races, etc.
Here's me in 2016 in Brisbane, QLD a couple days after cycling a 300 km event in 18 hours including all breaks.
In late 2017 and early 2018, my husband and I were in great shape and feeling good. We were cycling events and on our own and building up the distances in the hopes of going to France in 2019 to ride the Paris-Brest-Paris 1200 km event. We met on a Paris-Brest-Paris in 2003, and the 2019 one was going to be a bit of an anniversary trip.
And then on March 22, 2018, my husband had a very bad accident at work ... and life changed. He was in a coma for 3 weeks and post traumatic amnesia for 7 weeks and in hospital for 100 days. Then, a year after the accident, he had a tonic clonic (grand mal) seizure which set him back. He'll never fully recover but he's doing better then they originally predicted.
He is cycling again but gets very tired so can't cycle consistently or for long distances.
Because cycling is something we've always done together, this means I'm not cycling the ultra long distances at this point either. In an attempt to boost my exercise we've set up a home gym, and I've got into running again. I hadn't run since I was in my late teens!
But all the time sitting at the hospital and dealing with the aspects of care for my husband, plus working, plus attending university has taken its toll on my weight and I don't look like that picture above anymore! This year I have maintained my weight but I'd really like to lose a bit.
So that's me in a rather large nutshell.
July ...- Work
- "Homework" regarding my husband's situation
- Mother's surgery
- My surgery - deviated septum and turbinate reduction
- Recovery
- Resuming Uni
And as a part of the recovery, I've amassed quite a stack of books. If I can see, I'll read!
Machka in Oz10 -
Did Biggest Loser Killer Circuit DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do an advanced strength DVD.
Barbara – when we were training the service dog, he wasn’t allowed to go in front of us or pull or anything. What we did was keep treats in our pocket/whatever and every time he walked on our side, he was given a treat and we had a “clicker” thing that we’d click when he did what he was supposed to do.
I’ll probably do my Hickory run today. Need to go to the farmer’s market since I understand they have cantaloupes that I might like, maybe stop at the Salvation Army, take the shawl I made to my girlfriend (I’ll just leave it on her porch) then go to Publix for the things I can’t get anywhere else.
Took the food out of the freezer for next week
KJ – oh, the garbage truck is super fascinating. Almost as fascinating as a “digger truck”
Love all the pics
Lanette – Aldi will only take exact change for cash transactions. Well, it’s very rare that I make a cash transaction, anyway

July 1 -- Happy Canada Day!
As seen above, my husband and I walked 4.3 km. It was 2 separate walks. One was in a little local wetlands and the other was exploring a different end of a local beach area. He was very tired by the end of the second walk ... so he napped while I worked.
Machka in Oz6 -
Sue in WA: Thanks for your kind words. I am sooooo glad the procedure is over and done. It is stressful enough in normal times, but Covid times add a huge layer of worry and stress for everyone. :ohwell:
KJ: You are the best child caregiver I’ve ever known.
Lisa: Our county dashboard reports 30 positive Covid tests, no deaths, 2680 negative tests and 26 recovered. That leaves 4 still fighting the disease. I hope they are able to get well ASAP. It seems that our two counties on opposite sides of the country have much in common. :flowerforyou:
Lanette: Now that we’re all done with the medical procedure, the dog is calm as can be. This morning he is sleeping in, along with DH. I always go to the cashier at Walmart, even if the lines are long. I figure I’m helping them keep a job and I have no desire to use the machines to check out. :noway:
Viv: Every month of lockdown feels like an eternity. June lasted a L O N G time. :ohwell:
Allie: You, like KJ, are an awesome caregiver. Both of you focus on what is best for the elder or children who need special care.
SuziQ: DH is resistant to me going back to yoga, and his thoughts are similar to yours. Luckily, he doesn’t mind if I spend time with Arrow. There is lots of fresh air and wide open spaces at the stable.
Machka: I hope your upcoming surgery goes exceedingly well.
Barbie: I come from a family of unwanted advice givers. I work very hard to avoid it, but I’m not always as successful at keeping my opinions to myself as I should be.
Cheri: Great to see your smiling face. :flowerforyou:
Tomorrow is our daughter’s 41st birthday. We’ve already sent her present and I’m hoping to wish her Happy Birthday via phone call or Zoom.

Hi everyone - just found your thread. I'm Carla in MN and I'd love to join your little group. I'm 55 and since last fall have been gaining a bit of weight and have been pretty much unmotivated to lose it. I really need to...it's July after all and my pants are tight. I don't weight in but I use clothes as my measure of success (or failure)
Let's see - been working from home for months now and finding it very difficult to get steps in. At the office it was a long walk to anywhere including the bathroom. Here's it's like 30 steps! I have 8 grandchildren and finally got to meet the last 2 due to covid. Missed the itty bitty newborn baby stage but what can you do. I wouldn't want to risk giving them covid just to hold a newborn baby. I've also not been doing Yoga at all - I used to do it almost daily! Such a lazy bum
What I'm hoping to get out of this group is of course some friendship with like minded people but also motivation. I've lost my oomph that I used to have and I'd like to get it back again!
I am looking forward to getting to know you all!
Happy Canada Day as well to all Canadians out there near and far!9
