Went out in the lovely drizzle for a cool run and my first half marathon since 21st March. Managed my standard time of 2:18, felt good at 8 miles and was thinking maybe extend this to 15 miles, after 11 miles I was counting down the yards and working out where on the route I could stop running!10

Sunny, mid 60s F, and no wind today. Just ran by feel; felt good in the shade, but it was a little warm in the sun.
Said goodbye to Comet Neowise last night. Viewing conditions were perfect, but it's faded to being just a light smudge in a dark sky - couldn't even distinguish the tail. I did see a bat, so I donated some blood to the mosquitoes so they could make more bat food.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs

@TheMrWobbly Yes! I know exactly what you mean! I had visions of my 1st double digit run since May, but at mile 9 I just couldn't muster enough energy to make my legs keep going. So hot and humid. Felt like I was wearing a mask the whole time 😩
Guess I try again in August.

7 miles yesterday. Actually went outside, was a light drizzle then stopped. Very humid 75f. Managed decent pace for miles 2-5. The rest were warm /cool down. Still came home a sweaty mess.

I have had a lot of Saturdays like that since March. As it has gotten hotter and I have learned to manage in the heat, i have even found myself having dread at the last few miles as opposed to adrenaline. Like - “I can’t believe I STILL HAVE two miles to go!” When you’ve been torturing yourself for a long time, any additional distance can feel like death, lol.

As it has gotten hotter and I have learned to manage in the heat, i have even found myself having dread at the last few miles as opposed to adrenaline. Like - “I can’t believe I STILL HAVE two miles to go!” When you’ve been torturing yourself for a long time, any additional distance can feel like death, lol.

@InkedAtty57 Recently I ran barefoot in a field of geese - okay, I was sprinting because I wanted to catch one - and I really liked how it felt. Like my feet and legs just knew what to do - i felt much lighter and faster. It was great - until I realized I ALSO ran through a field of goose poop....
Eventually may try barefoot running but how in the world do I accomplish that on concrete, asphalt, and some decently technical trails? I guess the answer to that question is to just go do it and see what happens.
Today I go stake out the loop for the next aravaipa challenge in the Insomniac series. It’s a loop called the Back 40. I believe it is 23 miles and the fastest known time is just over 5 hours. I want to see if it connects to the place where I usually run, where water is, etc. if it DOES connect, then I can do that 52K between my normal place and the back 40 and not struggle to go back and forth a bunch of times or run through town all day. If it doesn’t connect, then it’s still a new adventure spot and I can still run that loop like 1.6 times and get the 52k. I even have a map lol. It looks like the map of Jurassic Park.
I don’t plan on doing all 23 miles today. At most,
i will do 10, but what’s more likely is 7. I’m almost to my 1000 mile bib for run the year! Also i want to give my body time to rest and recover from the last big challenge.
Today is going to be a good day. But first.... this pot of coffee ....5 -

EASE into barefoot running, or even minimalist shoes. Your feet are not ready for it
I had to give it up years ago due to Raynaud's, but it is still a good exercise. Running barefoot will help teach you better form. I mean you have to learn to land your foot softly, or it will hurt. Foot stomping is probably the number 1 most common mistake runners make when it comes to form. The same will be true with where on your foot you plant your landing. The moment you touch down you will get tactile feedback and your body will know to adjust.
BUT EASE INTO this. Taking the shoe off you have been wearing for countless 1000s of miles means you lose all the protection you are used to. It will be very easy to hurt yourself at first.5 -

I dragged myself out of bed about 5:30, much against my will and with regret that I was out late and had that last beer last night. A friend was doing a virtual half this morning and was asking for any company so a few of us met to help her out. It was slightly cooler temperature wise but right around 90% humidity again, so it was a tough run but helped immensely by having friends to chat with. The friend doing 13.1 had a little bit done before we joined up so I ended up with not quite 12 miles. As discussed above I thought earlier in the run that I'd definitely do the full 13.1 and maybe even a bit more, but I was more than done when my friend was done.
My total run/walk miles goal for the month is 240 and I am now at 196, so 44 miles left and that is about 7.3 miles a day remaining. It's definitely still a stretch to make it but I'm a little more hopeful that I can do it.

Had my telehealth appointment for the tick bite yesterday - first telehealth I’ve ever done. It was also time to renew my prescriptions for diabetes and thyroid meds. Times have sure changed! Before, I never saw my actual doctor, just her PA, and she was all, “I need blood tests every six months to give you your regular meds, and every three months if we change dosages.” Now it’s like, “Here, have a year’s supply of meds, do you need anything else? Just please don’t come in!”
Anyway she very much doubts it’s Lyme because a) the tick probably wasn’t attached long enough and b) Lyme is uncommon here. However, she thinks it’s cellulitis and definitely infected, and the same antibiotic used to prevent Lyme will also cure cellulitis plus a host of other badnesses carried by ticks, so I have a course of doxycycline now. Which causes phototoxicity, yay! Just what I need to be taking while running outside in the middle of July!
I used to have a hat with a visor but someone stole it when my run bag got stolen and I never replaced it because it was late in the year. So I’m hoping Amazon has one I like that they will one day ship. And I probably better run with at least something covering my shoulders, and sunblock (although studies have found sunblock doesn’t necessarily help with the doxy reaction). And get up, run, then get back in early while the sun is low. I stayed out until 9 the other morning and my face got burned, and that was before taking meds.
Meanwhile I’ve been running 5k and walking 5k every other day, very slowly. Knee is still being a pain but slowly improving. If it gets to the point where it doesn’t hurt the morning after running, I will start increasing distance again.8 -
@rheddmobile That is really good about getting maintenance meds prescribed like that. We type 1 diabetics always wondered why our endocrinologists want to see us so often too. We should just get a lifetime prescription for insulin, insulin delivery supplies, testing supplies, etc. My pancreas won't suddenly re-create islet cells and make insulin again.... at least not without my immune system putting up a fight about it and winning.
I have tons of hats, mostly that I have gotten from races. But I don't usually wear a hat because even white hats that wick well seem to make me hotter and hold sweat in. I know they say it is better to block sun on skin, but subjectively it feels like theyy hurt more than they help. But that is only when running. When just hiking or walking outside, I absolutely wear a hat. The sweat just comes faster than the hat material can release it to the air when running.2 -
@T1DCarnivoreRunner @rheddmobile I agree that the hats seem so much hotter. I have a few thin brooks that are good and a nike thin golf hat that works better than the others. And a mesh Patagonia that is nearly like nothing. Good news though! Happy hat hunting!3

I think I’m going for a visor. My old hat was Under Armour and even though it was thin with vents it still made me hot. I wear my pony too high for most hats anyway.0 -
@HonuNui - love the octopus! I have tried to see Neowise here too but it has either been cloudy from marine layer or too bright from all the lights.
@Camaramandy648 - you don't have to go completely barefoot to get the benefits of barefoot running. Easing your way into 0 drop shoes from what ever your current shoes are would be a first step and then you can go to less cushioning and even to the barefoot sandals that @InkedAtty57 was mentioning. Those simply provide a layer of protection for your feet from whatever is on the ground. You do still feel the ground, rocks, etc. they just don't poke into your skin. There are tons of different brands that sell 0 drop and minimalist running 'shoes'. Vibram was one of the first and Altra is probably the best known right now although I think they have move away from their minimalist models and mostly have pretty cushioned 0 drop shoes. On the other end are little known but well liked brands such as Xero and Minimus. I like Topo Athletics as they fit me well and have both minimal (ST-2 and now ST-3) and cushioned models (Zephyr) depending on what I need for a particular day/run. Also Runners World had an article in June about minimalist shoes. Again as @PastorVincent mentioned you cannot go from one day running in 8, 12 or higher drop shoes and start running in 0 drop. You will hurt yourself (calves and/or achilles) because they are used to being shortened by the higher heel of your current running shoes.
@rheddmobile - I am so glad your tele-medicine visit went well and that you got something for the infection. I have had a couple and they were good too. It will be interesting though when it is time for my physical and to get a new thyroid prescription how they will handle that. My doctor too has always had me go for labs every 3-4 months and it has been almost a year now...
Also - I found some inexpensive ($20) long sleeved UV shirts on Amazon that I have been running in since last summer (yes I do get incredibly sweaty). It took me a while to get used to it but you might try it or use a long sleeve race shirt to protect your arms and shoulders.1 -

@rheddmobile Yep. Times sure have changed. I wonder if they'll keep it up after the pandemic eases or if they'll get back to the old, "You have to come in." mode so they can make more money? I have an old set of encyclopedia's I was looking through one day and came across the entrance for doctor's. One of the things it said was that they spend the majority of their time making house calls! I just find the way things have evolved fascinating. Glad you are getting the antibiotic, just in case, even if it isn't lyme. Glad your knee is improving.

I have one HeadSweats hat and have yet to wear it. I have a child sized head for one, two it was sent to me from St Jude's, so I'm kinda emotionally attached to it, their cause, and my youngest son, Alex's nickname was Jude.1 -
I ran my International Space Station Virtual 10K today on the treadmill. I didn't want to do it in the heat and humidity on the driveway and didn't want to drive anywhere to run it either. It worked out well, as I could control the incline and my pace and push myself more than I would have outside. I basically did 7 x (1 min @ 7.0 mph), 2 min @ 6.0 mph, 3 min @ 5.5 mph, 3 min @ 5.0 mph, and then walked 1 min @ 3.8 mph). Wound up with a PR at 1:08:19. I beat my April time on the treadmill by 5 minutes exactly and my outside time by 9 minutes. Of course, outside would have been much harder and slower today. Anyway, I was excited about the PR. (I also walked a mile.)

I received the bling a couple of weeks ago, but didn't open it until today. I was so excited to see that the writing on the shirt is iridescent. I love it.

I have a few headsweats but same as @elise4270 I have a child size head. I started wearing Oiselle and they work so much better for me because they are made for women. I would recommend their visor but it's sold out! They keep selling out of the black & I keep missing when it restocks. I have the orange but would like a second one.0

I have a white one from oiselle I like. It has a zipper in the hat for a card, cash, id, key, etc... It is a heavier hat though.

I love their trucker style hats. They are light and airy. I do get a bit warmer in a hat but I like protecting my scalp a bit & blocking the sun some from my eyes2 -

Hi Everyone – I’m so far behind on reading, I’ve been at least trying to scan posts and drop in my runs. Work has been crazy I’ve been working 50+ hour weeks.

@shanaber I love headsweats. I’m not a big hat fan hardly wear them but they are great. I’ve been wearing their masks, they are comfortable and I don’t feel as hot wearing them. Since I’m in the office working I have it on between 9 – 12 hours a day so comfort is important
@quilteryoyo great job on the ISS 10K, I love the medal. Skip got the same shirt but I think in blue.
Had a crappy night last night and bad morning, ended up in the ER. I feel kinda stupid now, but the ER doctor was like no glad you came in. About 4 hours after a late lunch I started having chest pains, they got so bad I was actually walking around the house crying holding my chest. Thought I was going to get sick and just couldn’t do anything to make the pain stop. This actually happened once a while ago but after about an hour it stopped. This time after 90 minutes I finally took a prescription pain killer and was able to fall asleep. I woke up a bunch of times during the night and it hurt but not as bad. This morning it was back to 15 on a scale of 10, and believe me I do good with pain so it really hurt. Skip threatened to call 9-1-1 so I told her okay I’d go to the hospital. Naturally at this point I’d already googled heart attack symptoms 100 times. No one was in the ER so in 15 minutes I was back and an EKG done. They did a ton of tests $$$ ha ha and luckily no heart attack, no damage to my heart, blood work was all good and he honestly thought it was indigestion. He asked if I was stressed and I told him a rough few weeks at work, my blood pressure was great but he thought the fast food I ate along with stress just caused it to be bad. He gave me a prescription med to take in case it happens again and said please please don’t always think it’s indigestion in case God forbid it’s not. So we came home, I slept for a few hours and I’m not great but 1,000 times better. I was surprised the ER didn’t do a COVID test and naturally they wouldn’t let Skip in with me, but that’s okay.

I’m wearing that shirt at the moment except mine is blue/purple. My husband got it for himself then decided the iridescent letters were a bit much for him, so he let me have it, and now it’s my oversized lounge-around-the-house shirt of choice. I feel like it’s the perfect sentiment for the quarantine era!2 -

@skippygirlsmom Red is one of the colors I look good in, so that's why I got it. I do love it. I am so glad that wasn't anything wrong with your heart. Don't ever feel stupid about going to the doctor for something like that. I once thought I was having a heart attack, with pain starting in my chest area, then going down my right arm and back up into my jaw. I was driving and had to stop and cry it was so bad. I sat there for a few minutes until it eased enough to go on. I did have it checked later, and not my heart. It has happened a couple of times since, but I have discovered it was just really bad acid reflux - at least that is my self diagnosis. If I feel it coming on and quickly get a drink of water, it quits. I guess the water washes the acid back where it belongs before it can get bad. I'm going to check out the space rack challenge.
