I got out the door at 7:40 this morning. That is early for me, but, like @katharmonic said, not really that early. I was scheduled for a Fast Finish Run - basically going for negative splits. It was 66°F and 83% humidity at the start, so not terrible. Today's run was much better than yesterday's...at least my legs didn't feel like lead. I did manage negative splits and was pleased with how my HR trended upwards as it should have. I was sort-of on a time crunch this morning, so didn't go much longer than the plan called for...just enough to get to a good stopping point mileage wise. So, I ran 2.75 miles and walked 1. Then I went to my mom and dad's and helped them get peaches ready to can. The peaches they got are really good.
and 6/20 miles walking.

Today is a rest day for me. I thought I'd pop in and ask for prayers and good vibes for my dad. He fell last night and broke his hip. They are doing surgery today at 4:00. He is in relatively good shape, but will be 83 in two weeks and he does have a pacemaker. Plus his hearing is really bad so it is especially hard for him being alone in the hospital.13

No, I am at work by 5 or 6 am on non-running days, 7 am at the latest on running days. If I wait until I get home from work to run, would mean I don't get my afternoon lifting done on running days, and my evening walk would probably not happen.2 -
@kgirlhart Prayers for your dad and the doctor's and nurses. I know from experience how hard it is for him to be alone in the hospital when he can't hear well. Same thing happened to my dad last month. I really wish they would let one person be with the elderly in cases like this. Dad thinks he knows what they say, but it isn't always what someone actually says. I called the nurses and asked them to be sure he knew what they were asking him. They said they would, but I'm not sure they did and he was so stressed and would call me to see if he answered things correctly. Now, mom and I are pretty sure he won't go back into the hospital if he needs to for that very reason. I guess he would have to for a broken bone, but not much else. I say all of that to let you know I empathize with him and you and will definitely pray everything goes well. How long will he have to be in the hospital?
@Scott6255 Well, that stinks. I hope the weather cools down at least a little for your morning runs. Is there some other place in your house or garage that you can move the treadmill? Sorry, not trying to be bossy. Just trying to help out.

@Scott6255 hahaha yip. Dreadmills are for December. Sometimes. Not where I live. I'd rather be out in the cold. So funny because as I'm writing that, I think about how a year ago that wasn't true at all. I loved the treadmill. It was the best! Now, I hate hate hate hate hate them. They're so boring!

@quilteryoyo I have never gotten out the door early. Actually. I think the earliest I've ever gotten to the trail is like maybe 9 or 10am, which by my standards, is not even really early. I wake up at 5am on weekdays to get ready for work and walk my dog, so on the weekends, I stay in bed as long as I can until I start to feel restless. I have been getting a lot of peaches too. The kids eat them like candy.
I went to run Saturday. I had planned on ten miles. Everything wasn't going well. There was a thunderstorm that I swear wasn't forecasted or I read the wrong weather report. Then, there were signs posted every freaking where that the trail was closed. if you know me at all, then you know that I ignore those signs and make jokes about how you can literally walk around them and SURPRISE! The trail is still there! Well.... that was only effective until I got to the giant cement roadblock in front of the first tunnel. At that point, I decided it might be there for a really good reason and I don't want to get caught climbing over it. That would be a great story, but I don't know what the penalty would be. So I turned around and had to drive all the way to the other section of trail. Well, they were doing roadwork that I wasn't anticipating, which changed my route entirely and I had to drive the opposite direction for miles before I could turn around and go the correct direction. FINALLY I made it to the trail. Started out great! The rain had stopped, the sun was out, the playlist was legit! Found another path with caution tape... went under it. Well guess what was on the other side of the caution tape. Red clay-mud. After a thunderstorm. Which stuck to my shoes and was several inches thick on the bottoms and sides. I could barely get out of it. It was like running with millions of pounds of weights on my feet. So I turned around. Again. Found another path. It is not run often, I think. Because the spider webs. And the thickness of the underbrush. And how overgrown it was. Just more "wild," than the other portions of trail. Well, up to that point enough things had gone wrong that I was pretty on edge and then I looked to my left and in the middle of BFE is this trailer. Now, it could be a job site trailer for the work they're doing on the trails OR IT COULD BE WHERE THE BAD GUYS KEEP ALL THE RUNNERS. So. I was done.
There was music and jumping around, which I like to call dancing, involved in my Saturday night so the long run I had planned for yesterday did not happen because my calves are SO FREAKING SORE.
Still pretty stiff today, and today is the start of aravaipa's virtual event, Vertigo. It's 119k today - five distances in seven days. Tonight is just a 6K, which I think I can manage. It's going to be an interesting week. My calves never are sore like this, which makes me think I should get a jump rope so jumping will be more part of my regimen.

@Camaramandy648 So did the new shoes get mud all over, or did you reserve their first outing for a drier day?
It’s pretty hot here. Last night the temp never went below 78 and it was 86 when we got out at 7 am. I have four more days of worrying about phototoxicity from the doxycycline - running in a hat and long sleeves in this weather is just nasty. Despite running in the shade as much as possible, and relatively low temperatures, I felt like I was gonna die from heat. Checked and wouldn’t you know, the dewpoint was 80 degrees! That dewpoint really is a good indicator of how it feels to run in different weather.
Got 4 miles which is more than I have run since the 4 on the 4th run in July. If the knee feels okay tomorrow I will push for 5. Right now the knee feels a little warm so I’m icing it.
@shanaber Cicadas don’t look much like cockroaches. Black ones with red eyes are periodic cicadas which only emerge once every several years, and green ones emerge annually. A lot of people find them scary but I think they are pretty. They don’t bite, so when I was a child I used to love to put them on my best friend who was afraid of them. She had a lot to put up with. They like to cling to the sides of trees and have very pokey legs, so they will happily stick to a child’s dress as well!
We saw a newly emerged one today, near where we found the emerging one last time. The last one was a periodic one with the red eyes, but this guy was the color of green patina on a copper roof. This one had fallen into the street too, but it seems he made it onto the edge of the curb before splitting out of his shell. You can see him and his old shell in the same picture!4 -
@rheddmobile I had the new shoes out! Totally caked in red clay! I was SO mad about that. I washed em on the hand-wash setting in the washer and now they're sitting on a towel for the next couple of days to dry out. They'll never be brand new again, but at least not covered in mud
Also on cicadas! I thought of you while I was out there! The sound of the cicadas, my goodness! So pretty!2 -

Day 10 of August. Another easy run after a long weekend. Switching my long run to a normal run Sunday had me feeling fresh today. Switching all of my training goals to speed work now with all of my races canceled for the year. Hoping to get my 5k under 17 minutes this year and run a 10 miler in under 1 hour.

I was out of town and got behind. But I still ran

"Other" was paddle-boating around the "Island of Crocodiles and Seagulls", without any actual crocodiles. I mean, I don't think there would be crocodiles in Poland, in a lake people swim in... but I could be wrong.
Took an extra rest day today because of travel and feeling wiped out I'm playing training by ear, just a basic weekly framework (1 speedwork, 1 long run, 1 long bike ride, some medium runs/rides/swims and some rest as I feel necessary) and it's working well. I am signed up for some half marathon races starting in September but don't actually believe they will happen, so this is pretty much HM maintenance mode for me and I'm OK with it.5 -

@kgirlhart Prayers for your dad. Tell him to be patient with the pain and don't be shy about bugging those nurses for anything he needs- I was never so elated after one woman escorted me to brush my teeth! I was in overnight for the femur bone (july 2020 hardware again) surgery and was happy to have a day or two alone with sweet tea and narcotics; it wasn't terrible. He'll probably sleep much of it anyway. They only allowed DH to come once for about 10 minutes. Call him if/when you can.3

I know you are trying to help, and I appreciate you. But anywhere in the house would be too loud for her. And garage would be no better (actually worse) than running outside. It's Ok. If wifey will use it during the day to get her walks in, then it is money well spent.3 -

@rheddmobile - thanks for the picture! It is really not at all what I thought it looked like and is kind of pretty. The old shell is very interesting and kind of bizarre!
@Camaramandy648 - pretty sure I would have given up on that run much earlier!
I got up earlier and got out for my run earlier while it was still cool out. Sun was hot but it was only about 66F and about 65% humidity when I left. 72F and 58% humidity when I got home. Hobbes was able to come too and enjoyed being out and visiting with some of the people along the trail. We did stop at one point just to sit for a minute and enjoy the morning and listen to the birds. I was able to run much more this time but still trying to get used to the PM and the higher HR. My focus this week isn't on getting more miles as much as being able to run as much of the ones that I can (quality over quantity) so no long runs and keeping to 3-4 miles with a 1 mile walk for warmup.Tomorrow is my cross training day and Wednesday I am likely not going to be able to run because of 'life'. I may decide to run tomorrow anyways because it is just supposed to get hot and hotter as the week goes on. For now showing it as the cross training day though.

@kgirlhart, thinking of your dad and hope his surgery went well. Hospitals sometimes have listening devices (often called pocket talkers) for hearing impaired patients if you ask for one. Well, true, but I guess I'm thinking my effort is slacking too on a daily basis. I have all kinds of data and the summer pace is really not slower on average, probably because I'm usually mid-training for something. Now, well, I'm lacking motivation running wise so I'm just kind of going through the motions recently. But my coach would say consistency is the key so as long as I'm running I'm not really losing much ground.

So um, my goal is to cycle and heal, and be back with a new goal in September. Wow light at the end of the tunnel!8
