Welcome!0 -
eleanorhawkins wrote: »@Camaramandy648 the toe is ok, thanks for asking. I think it will probably end up coming off, it doesn't look like it's really attached underneath and there's a big hole under it but at least it isn't leaking or anything any more. I'm still slathering some antibiotic cream on at night more as a preventative measure than anything else. I remember the agony of the infection when it was ingrown in my teens that eventually led to it being removed and the roots at the sides killed... I will do ANYTHING to avoid that pain again. Seriously. I would rather give birth to another 9lb baby.
Glad the running with another experience wasn't too bad. I always run alone too, and though sometimes I think I would like someone to run with, it's my me-time and my therapy.
If you would like a nap, I would suggest you listen to your body and take a nap. You do so much, you might benefit from giving yourself permission to be 'lazy' every now and then?
I've lost track of when and what I've posted. My body is still recovering from Saturday's virtual race. I really did push myself hard, and I'm feeling it. I should probably follow my own advice and take some real rest, but mentally I just can't at the moment. The situation with my father has be anxious and uneasy and keeping active is the way I'm coping. They're not operating until the 28th, and we won't know how bad it is or what else they're going to do until after that. He's home to wait, and not coping well at all. He goes from almost normal sounding, to scared, to gloomy and sure he's going to die, to confused and not understanding things, all within a 3 or 4 minute conversation. So hard not to be there. Even harder when we've never really been good at talking to each other.
Yeah, tomorrow ought to be a rest day, not gonna happen.
Hugs. Understand the mental need for a run as much as physical. Just take it slow if you go and try not to injure yourself. Thinking of you x1 -
5 miles on trails plus a long walk today. Tried to push it just a little since I feel like I’m forgetting how to run with good form on trails, wasn’t that much faster but fast enough for a segment PR on Strava, I’ll take it. The weather was almost nippy when we headed out and perfect by the time we were done.
Also, saw this guy! I guess he thought it was nippy too, I didn’t want him to be run over by a bicycle so I nudged him until he left, and he was very reluctant to go.6 -
@Faebert Thanks. I knew that your surgery was bad, but didn't realize they had to do all of that. I like that you are finding your "new best." Great attitude. I'll keep that in mind as I go forward.
@eleanorhawkins Hugs! I know how hard that must be to not be there for your dad and waiting is the worst! I hope everything turns out okay.
Great run @rheddmobile . That's one of the snakes I'm not afraid of. There aren't many. LOL0 -

I don't know if I posted yesterday or not, but I was just realizing I was off a day on my cumulative tracker. Today I ran after work and skipped going to strength training. I will probably be cutting everything back this week and next until I get through this work deadline. Apologies for not keeping up very well, but I certainly always at least read through and see what you all are up to whenever I can.4 -
Hey guys,
I RAN TODAY!
OK so it was 2x 2min runs on a treadmill to test out the calf, but I ran. For the first time in 10 weeks. I ran!
I have been given a plan for the next couple of weeks - to start I am doing 2 runs a week of 2 min running, 2 min walking repeat 5 times. Then I will bump up to 4 min running 2 min walking repeat 5 times after 1.5 weeks. See how the calf goes. If it stays OK, I'll then build to 5k.
Friday will be my first proper run outside. I'm so nervous. I want this to go well. I want to be injury free. I'm scared of re-injurying it. Every tight feeling, niggle etc at the moment has me worried. Sigh.
Will see.17 -
@shanaber yes, we have had varying levels and design so of braces and kt tape over the years. I actually was utilizing both on Friday and Saturday after that brutal therapy appointment... therapist did the kt tape, I put a brace over it since I was still gimping.... one of the more amazing taping applications I went thru was one of the least support based.... but she cut it into like fingers somehow, and spiraled them,,,and it looked totally dumb... but it did a good enough job relieving swelling, there was a noticeable difference between where the fingers were and where they weren’t ... taping is one of those totally voodoo things, but as best I can tell it is voodoo that works.
In general though, when I start considering wearing the brace on the runs, it is usually a sign I need some intervention again. But I definitely still do it.
Yesterday I went on a hike/wog on some of the local trails. Need to remind myself that it is the time of year that if I’m going to be on USFS property, I need to wear my orange. Between drought, cows, and hunters some of the trails were kinda deep loose dirt which was a new challenge. But I did a little lollipop shaped route I have done before, and I was still jogging some further on 5e route than normal, and wasn’t completely hating my life at the end. So I am calling it a win.
5.2 yesterday = 7/32 for the month.6 -

Oh yep. The fingers thing. I used it after that time I crashed my bike to help with the bruising. Worked like a charm. Similar technique to the one demonstrated here.1 -
Well i want to cry. It's 12 hrs since I did my treadmill run with my physio, and over the course of the day my calf has started to ache. Didn't hurt at all during the run, or the few hours after. But about 6hrs ago it definitely started to ache a bit. It's fine at rest, and when I'm actively walking. But those first few steps after not walking for a bit is definitely niggling. It's 11pm and I've just finished an evening shift at work. It's definitely just when I start walking. After a few steps it's back to pain free.
Physio did mention my muscles would be a little achy when I first start back due to lack of running specific activities. Maybe this is that ache?
Scar tissue? Or more rest? It's been 10 weeks!
ETA My next run isn't for 3 days. So happy to see if it settles in the meantime.7 -
@Avidkeo, I hope your pain is just a little soreness from working that muscle for the first time in awhile. Listen to your body though!
3 miles and some ab work last night. Got a few stressful things going on, so I didn’t sleep well. My mind is going everywhere. 🙁5 -
@Avidkeo, I was so happy to see you post a run! Then sad a few seconds later when I scrolled down to see that your calf started grumbling at you 😢
But don't panic just yet. Like you said, it's been 10 weeks since you last ran. Your muscles surely did atrophy, so it is going to take quite a while to build back up. I have experienced this, and there are more and more people denouncing total rest for soft tissue injuries. Active recovery allows more blood flow and helps heal faster.
I think you just have to give your body a chance, be smart and careful, and see if continuing short, slow run / walk intervals start building the muscle back.
Just my thoughts.5 -

Thank you! My physio has set a Conservative return to running so I'm only running twice a week. It's actually feeling a little better now, after a short walk to the car and around the house, so I'm putting it down to scar tissue warming up.
ETA I've also noticed some mild DOMS In my quads too hahaha
I'm just so scared I'm going to go back to 3 months ago!!6 -
I took the weekend off, but got a run in yesterday! I just didn't have the time to come back here to log it because work is picking up. I skimmed through so I'll respond back to a few things but I'm sorry if I missed anything!
@kgirlhart sorry about the job loss but also excited for you for the new opportunity! I have my fingers crossed for you!
@TheMrWobbly Run the World sounds amazing! I'm in Michigan, could probably just use Detroit as my marker.
@marisap2010 beautiful run yesterday morning! I love running through trails like that.
@rebeccahetrick welcome!!
@rheddmobile I would have been TERRIFIED coming across that guy on my run. Thankfully where I live there arent too many snakes, but I'm totally an indiana jones in that regard......do not like snakes!
@Avidkeo congrats on your first run back, but I'm sorry about the achey-ness. Make sure to take it easy and listen to your body, I'd say wait it out a bit and see how it feels, and just make sure you dont push yourself too hard too fast.
Speaking of aching, I was so tense last night in my sleep and was laying on my ankle at a weird angle, so it woke up so sore today. I'm doing my stretches and seeing how it feels throughout the day if I decide to run or not. May take it as a rest day and see how I'm doing tomorrow.

Sunny, low 40s F, and a light breeze from the southeast. Actually got out before the sun peeked over the horizon.
Saw a bunch of black squirrels, which of course made me think of @PastorVincent. Today's song in the head was "The Twelfth of Never," by Johnny Mathis.

14.5/70 miles
10/2: 3.1 miles
10/3: 6.2 miles
10/5: 5.2 miles
First day of the bumped up plan. Speed work this morning was definitely challenging after a longer run on Saturday, but I got it done. My plan also increased the length of my easy runs on Wed to 4-5 miles. I usually am doing that before work, and I just can't get that mileage in before work unless I get up earlier, which I refuse to do. So, I think those will probably stay at 3-3.5 miles for now. Also, I think my body could use one truly short run a week for recovery.
@rebeccahetrick Welcome! I joined when I was running about what you are now, and I found this group to be so helpful.
@Avidkeo Congrats on the RUNNING! I'm glad to hear the soreness is already working itself out a little. Hopefully the next one will be even smoother.6 -
October miles: 22.2
Space Race miles: 211.08 -- 37.42 to go.
Friends want me to sign up for a ultra race in 3/21. 50 miles or 12 hours. Sounds crazy!7 -
Hey y'all! I'm in! I signed up for a tough mudder challenge and this one is 81 miles of distance. That's 130k. I haven't been running at all. So not all of it will be running, but I'd like a good chunk to be. So I"m going to go for a goal of 50k of running for this month! I'll be going out for my first run later today.
Good luck to everyone! Excited to join and and see how we all do!9 -

It's amazing what people go through that isn't obvious to the outside world. You're all so strong!
My hardest back-to-running injury was a torn labrum. They dislocated my hip and filed down the top of my femur. I've also had a couple of knee surgeries, but the hip one was harder to come back from. Although, what's hurt my running the most was/is years of off and on planter fasciitis.
So far for October I'm 14.57/60. I'm planning a run this afternoon, but the forecast calls for high 80's, I may end up indoors on the treadmill.6 -
@WandaVaughn do it!
@Branawesomer YEAHHHHHH DO IT!
@eleanorhawkins I've never had the toe thing like you have. I'm hoping i don't. It sounds truly awful. And I am so sorry about your father. If you can't run, maybe bike. bike therapy isn't exactly the same, but it might help?
... I never did get that nap. Work all day, then had to pick up my son because he has a stuffy nose and that's a covid symptom............................................ he's perfectly fine this morning, but had to keep him home as a precautionary measure.
Then, Nick didn't feel like going home after work so he came to our house - dinner and then his car shifter wouldn't budge. Well, I can be very arrogant and tenacious, so I decided that his stupid caddie cannot beat me. So I / we tore apart his dash looking for the lever underneath the shifter. Yours truly was able to manipulate a wrench to make the shifter shift. I hope they buy a new car soon.
But here is some good news. I saw this when I was driving to pick my daughter up after work and I stopped breathing and forgot how to drive and I was screaming.
I was just happy to be top 5 but I got 2nd in the 75K!!!!!!!

@Faebert wow, those are two biggies to come back from. Glad you were able to be proactive on the double mastectomy and hope you have continued good health.
@shanaber the rocks are the best! After a run one time I was sitting at the greenway and there were words on rocks there with a note asking to put together a sentence or words of inspiration and post them to a facebook page. It was really neat.
@rheddmobile he’s a cutie
Nice run @rubydrm
Woohoo @Avidkeo
Definitely wear that orange @hanlonsk
I'm so happy my girl is coming home for a long weekend. I was supposed to drive down to college on Friday and back Monday and of course ANOTHER hurricane is coming her way. I said I'd come down anyway not to worry, then her friend said he was driving home for the weekend so instead of us doing a hurricane party there she will come home. I haven't seen her since Aug 10th so I'm excited.

Couple of things I think I forgot to say:
@Faebert you are so strong and you are such an inspiration.
@quilteryoyo I am still praying for you.
@rheddmobile what a cutie! Although... I hate snakes. Even if I know they aren't venomous. They still scare the *kitten* out of my. My twin brother was bitten by a copperhead when we were six and I was there for all of it. It was real bad.
@Tramboman seems like you have such nice weather!
@Avidkeo I echo what @Scott6255 said. Active recovery as much as you are able. But again, I am no doctor and I tend to push much harder than is maybe reasonable. You are under the care of a doctor and you have medical experience too. I am happy you got a run in! And I hope your progress can continue!3 -
Wow, that's FANTASTIC @Camaramandy648!!! Congrats!!!!!!!!0
-
Woohoo congrats @Camaramandy648 !! 2nd place is amazing. Doing 75K at all is amazing!! So happy for you, well deserved! X
@Avidkeo try and keep the faith. You’ve worked so hard and been so patient. Trust the professionals and take your time and all will be well. A few more weeks as a proportion of the rest of your life is like the blink of an eye. Sending virtual hugs to NZ! X4 -
Great job, @Camaramandy648 !!!0
-
@Camaramandy648 Congratulations on the podium finish!
But I do have to scold you for seeing the announcement while driving. Please, don't use your phone while driving. We don't actually enjoy organizing these runs in memory of our group members, especially if it's a young mom, or whoever is in the other car if you cause an accident while distracted screaming about a placement in a race.
End of possibly very judgmental rant. And I send you the most sincere hugs10 -
Hello everyone. I'm new to MFP. I started exercising regularly about a year ago, but just recently found a love for running. It’s like therapy for my anxiety 😊 It’s pushed me to quit smoking and make healthy lifestyle choices. My goal for this month is 50 mi.
