Finally seeing a downward turn. Getting life back to a somewhat normal level. Completed a 10k virtually. Ran 10 miles just because. And not only did I get a flue shot (first one in 15 years) but also got the shingles vaccine. We had lunch with cousins and seeing someone with shingles plus overweight was a real eye opener for me. I am the only one that can change my way of life.

Congrats on the drop on the scale. You are doing great ... running 10 miles. That is an inspiration in itself. I walked 16 miles over the past 3 days LOL which is a great feat for me.
I've not gotten the flu shot but once in my adult life (turning 60 this month). I think it is probably the year for me to step up and do it as well. I'll have to ask my doc about the shingles vaccine ... I had chickenpox as a kid like most my age ... it is something to think about. Thanks for the reminder.
Changing My Life has been my motto for the past 2 years. I decided to retire young, lose weight, learn spanish, travel (which has been nix recently), and be more active. Life is too short!

Checking in early as we're headed out on a road trip early tomorrow. Great long run this morning of 11 miles in 2 hr 32 min. . I have a half marathon scheduled for Jan. I know my pace is slow right now, but I'm concentrating on how long I can run, not just distance. My pace is always faster as I get closer to race day.

Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in day out.

    12 weeks till 2021 🎉

A pound a week seemed reasonable in January until I checked out back in the spring and then gained even more. 15 lb loss in 2019; gained back 5 before 2020; gained back 6 more during pandemic spring 2020. Starting again in August to continue my journey! I need to quit losing the same pounds over and over. If you are tired of starting over, STOP giving up.

I'll turn 60 this year and really want to get into Onederland and make it stick this decade!
    2019 Starting Weight: 245 (1/2/2019) BMI 43.4
    2020 Starting Weight: 235 (1/1/2020) BMI 41.6
    Goal weight: <200 in 2020
    Current weight: 221.1 BMI 39.1
    Total weight lost: 23.9

Past week's successes: Walked 20 miles in 4 days to ensure I hit my 100 miles in Sept stretch goal, tracking everything.
This week's challenges: Not drinking alcohol when DH pours one for himself. Keeping a healthy mental focus on weight loss when my #s go up & down on the scale (big daily swings) but remembering overall the trend is downward.
REMEMBER to plan better when averaging out the daily walking goals to hit October’s stretch goal of 100 miles!

Checking in a day early since we are at our fishing camp and I was able to weigh in this morning on my mom's scale next door. Won't have that opportunity on my normal Monday WI. Hopefully it is not a false reading being on a different scale! We'll see when I return home.

    Week 40. Back on track!
Slow and steady wins the race. At 55, this is the lowest I've been in decades. Though my daily food tracking has been spotty, I’ve been doing well with my eating while continuing to stay active. My community gym has reopened (with restrictions) and it looks like I’m going to need it if I’m going to keep ahead of the curve and make it across the 52-pound finish line. With less than 7 pounds to go (in the challenge), it’s hard to believe there are only 12 weeks left in the year—and a couple of those weeks will be tough ones.

    Starting weight: 233 lbs
    Goal weight: 165 lbs
    Current weight: 187.5 lbs
Total weight lost: 45.5 lbs, -6.5 lbs since last month

    This month's successes:
I completed the 30-day #100abchallenge. I rode over 350 miles on the bike, one of which was 100k (62 miles), and maintained deficit calories for each week. Monthly measurements didn’t change much, though I did hit the diabolical 40-inch waist I hope to soon move under.

    This month's challenges:
Motivation. Frustratingly positive reinforcement and not being entirely displeased with my reflection, finding the motivation to keep losing has been a challenge. My feet are tugging at the floor as it feels more like a numbers game (inches and pounds) than a desire to look and feel healthier.

    Current weight (28-day average):
    186.8?
(I have been recording the same weight each day, as I cannot reliably weigh yet, but have been eating at or slightly under maintenance since the last weigh-in, so figure it's a conservative estimate.)

    Weekly change (28-day average):
    -0.5

    Cumulative change (Month/Quarter/Year):
    -0.5/-0.5/-10.3

    This week's successes:
    • All intake logged.
    • Step goal met (reduced to be realistic post-operation).
    • Maintaining intake around maintenance, calculating below most days.

    This week's challenges:
    • Week 3 of basement recliner prison.

This week's good news: my blood tests are not at the level to require hospitalization. Bad news? A fall I took apparently has caused a gap between the bones that were put together for the fusion. If they don't settle back and begin the fusion process, I'm going to be stuck in this limbo until my skin heals enough for the doctor to go in and operate AGAIN. I completely regret getting this done. The pain wasn't constant and pervasive enough to warrant this (un-)recovery process with all its complications. Perhaps I'll change my tune down the road, but right now I see no positives, and it's certainly not helping my mental state being stuck in my recliner pretty well 24/7 other than bathroom runs and doctor visits. Sorry to be a downer, but it really sucks and I'm just not in a place where I can draw on much of anything positive.

I'm not sure I have 52 pounds of fat that I want/need to lose at this point, but I'm close enough that I'm going to call myself "in."

    Starting weight: 197.1 pounds
    (HSW: 252, MFP restart: 242.7)
    5'1" F

    Goal: 21.5% body fat
    (currently estimated at 140-145)

    Current weight: 197.1
    Total challenge weight lost: 0.0

This week's successes: Getting back into deficit after a maintenance break.
This week's challenges: Extremely low motivation (for life-ing in general -- not out of the norm, as I battle physical and mental health issues on an ongoing basis).

A heads up: I will likely go faster than 1 pound/week for the first 4-ish months, then looking to tighten up and go into a slow loss followed by a recomp phase. I'll likely make 52 pounds of weight loss on the scale with some skin loss (hopefully), along with lean mass having to do with the support of the fat stores I have. I am aiming to maintain/increase muscle mass and bone density, so that may throw off the scale results. I do hope to reach my goal body fat percentage by the year's end, whatever scale weight that puts me at.

NOTE TO SELF & Sharing my thoughts: Sorry for the rambling but it was on my mind this morning. It is all about focus and not forgetting that I'm in this to change habits and discover how to live at a lower weight day to day, month to month, year to year. I have always had an official WI day (currently Mondays). Over the years I've tried Fridays because it gave me the freedom to let loose on the weekend and then make it up on the weekdays. I've had Sunday WW meetings that kept me accountable on Saturday night. I've tried Wednesdays because many times it is my lowest WI for the week. Mondays though just seem to hold me in check over the weekend and let me reflect on the week to come.
But in August I decided to join a few challenges (some I joined in 2019 when losing back then). What I discovered was that each challenge helped to focus me every day because I'm accountable for WI and ending a round at random intervals. No longer tied to just my "official Monday WIs".
    - Just Give Me 10 Days - 10 days is great! More than a week. Never ends on the same day of the week. Gives me the opportunity to tackle the number on the scaled daily and refresh/reset my thinking on a regular basis.
    - 2020Lose 52 Pounds in 52 Weeks Challenge - There it is... a weekly official WI with a note to self on the success of the past week and what challenges I'm facing for the next week.
    - 100 Days of Weighing In - Longer range view that I can set a target on the scale and work towards whittling down the bigger goal. Daily WIs with weekly WI on Saturdays (notice again a different day of the week examine my progress).
    - Less Alcohol monthly thread One Day at a Time - Tackling an issue that reduces my resistance to staying in control of what else I might consume while drinking or afterward. Also those extra calories are not needed in my daily life!
    - 12 week challenge starting Aug 26th - Least active group but gives me a shorter perspective than the overwhelming large number I'm tackling to lose and it is longer than a week or 10 days but shorter than 52 weeks or 100 days. AND I'm able to check in weekly on Tuesdays which again helps me continue to examine and focus.

Taking the time in the mornings to reflect, drink my coffee, note the progress and post ... gets me headed in the right mindset for the rest of the day.
    Thank you for challenges!

Week 41. Weather is turning, four pounds to go!
The cooler weather is making for much more enjoyable bike rides and I’m taking advantage to make some headway on the challenge. Thankfully, living in the southern US, I have plenty of nice days to look forward to for my outdoor activities. I’m within easy striking range of the 52-pound challenge weight of 181 and a ‘healthy’ BMI.

    Starting weight: 233 lbs
    Goal weight: 165 lbs
    Current weight: 185.1 lbs
Total weight lost: 47.9 lbs, -2.4 lbs since last week

    This Week’s Successes:

I’ve been a bit more consistent in logging and have done well in staying under my calorie targets and been on the bike four days this week to log another 110 miles.

    This Week’s Challenges:
A little bit of weather early in the week, but it cleared off. My now open fitness center has been calling, but I’ve not pulled myself away from my routine to get back into weight training as I know I’m going to have to start over again to make some changes to my body composition.

Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in day out.

    10 weeks till 2021 🎉

A pound a week seemed reasonable in January until I checked out back in the spring and then gained even more. 15 lb loss in 2019; gained back 5 before 2020; gained back 6 more during pandemic spring 2020. Starting again in August to continue my journey! I need to quit losing the same pounds over and over. If you are tired of starting over, STOP giving up.

I'll turn 60 this year and really want to get into Onederland and make it stick this decade!
    2019 Starting Weight: 245 (1/2/2019) BMI 43.4

Past week's successes: Walking daily and not snacking at night.
This week's challenges: At our fishing camp where routine and habits go out the window. DH will be on vacation & in vacation mindset mode.

Week 42. Three steps forward, four steps back
Not the first time I’ve gained over a previous week (in fact, it’s the 12th) in the past 42 weeks. An interesting health challenge, rainy weather, a lack of a gym, and a few meals that I didn’t decide to avoid have left their mark on the scale. Despite these setbacks, I’m still positive and there is plenty of time to regain lost ground and make the challenge weight in the weeks ahead.

    Starting weight: 233 lbs
    Goal weight: 165 lbs
    Current weight: 188.7 lbs
Total weight lost: 44.3 lbs, +3.6 lbs since last week

    This Week’s Successes:

Sticking to the bike riding cardio for another 80 miles. Completed two weeks of diet restriction (No processed grains, dairy, or sugar) mid-week.

    This Week’s Challenges:
The bi-polar HOA did not open the gyms as planned and has now decided to wait until November, so no weight training. Weather has limited my riding to a few short bursts instead of the long, loss-inducing, marathons. Eating back some of those calories has not helped and restoring some of my restrictions has me holding onto a bit of water which I can see and feel. Additionally, the appearance of a reducible hernia—common it would appear for men of my age—has my attention and caused me to rethink my activities so as to not worsen it to warrant more immediate medical attention.

    Current weight (28-day average):
    186.1?
(Inaccurate scale readings due to dressings/clothes/intake.)

    Weekly change (28-day average):
    -0.7

    Cumulative change (Month/Quarter/Year):
    -1.2/-1.2/-11

    This week's successes:
    • All intake logged.
    • Step goal met (reduced to be realistic post-operation), working on physical therapy.
    • Intake seems to be below maintenance.

    This week's challenges:
    • Everything went way south with post-surgical complications.

***Heads up: nothing overly graphic ahead, but there are some injury/treatment things that I talk about. The worst is in the first paragraph.***

So it seems like nearly everything that can go wrong is going wrong with this post-surgical stuff. I was put into the hospital on 10/13, have had two more surgeries this last week, and yesterday have transferred into an acute in-patient rehabilitation facility to try to get my physical abilities honed to be safe to release to a place other than home (as home is not a physically safe healing environment). Bone infection, part of my foot's skin died, the original procedure failed to produce bone fusion, external hardware now with pins running into my foot along with a skin graft and wound vac, 4-week daily IV antibiotic infusion regimen with additional oral meds... What a mess. (Wound vac is estimated to be a 4-month thing, but only if the graft takes otherwise I'll need another surgery for that, external hardware is 3 months if everything goes well. If the bone fusion is not taking by the 6-8 week mark, I was told I'd be losing my big toe and the long bone below it.

I managed to completely fail at maintenance too. My weight yesterday was 181.2, with clothes on, after breakfast, with all the foot dressings. The dressings are probably 2-3 pounds, and who knows on the other variables. While I do want to eventually lose weight, I am crazy-crazy concerned that I'm losing lean mass and not fat, which would be the worst outcome possible in my book. I don't want to gain weight either though, so it's like "what do I do?" Hospital food was OK to manage at the original hospitalization place, but now it's much more limited in my rehab setting. I'm trying to just primarily focus on eating a strong regimen of protein as offered foods allow, and I guess the numbers will fall where they fall.

If I'm totally honest, the worst part of this is the mental illness factor. My anxiety has been out of control, and the depression has hit like a bullet train with the immobility and relative isolation. Interaction through the rehab program is helping a bit for that, but only so much. I can only have one visitor per day here, and frankly, I'm so down I feel bad about asking anyone to visit. Not that I'd know who to ask/offer to first.

Anyway, depression dependent, I will try to continue checking in over these next months. Hope everyone else is having a good week.

I'm not sure I have 52 pounds of fat that I want/need to lose at this point, but I'm close enough that I'm going to call myself "in."

    Starting weight: 197.1 pounds

This week's challenges: Expected RAIN! I want to walk & garden this week. Planning chili & cornbread to continue our Halloween tradition which is not low carb friendly. DH is wanting me to also bake pumpkin cookies. I love baking in the fall.

I will never ever weigh 270 again. Soon I will say the same about 260.

    Starting weight: 272 (1-1-20)

    Goal WT 259

    7/8: 269.9
7/16: 267.8 I keep gaining and losing the same 2 or 3 pounds its nuts I tell ya.
8/10: 267.5 Its a work in progress, still waiting for that big drop but so far it has been slow coming.
8/17: 268.0 Am I disappointed in losing only 4 lbs this year? Yep. Am I still determined to have a great year of losing wt and getting healthier? Yep.
    8/24

10/28 265.5 Yes It has been awhile but the fight continues. I have been doing some short term challenges as well and it has been a battle. Down 6.5 lbs this late in the year is not that exciting but its 6.5 lbs less than I weighed Jan 1st. Yes my goals have changed this late in the year but if I hit my target Jan 1 2021 I will be quite happy. Next weigh in Nov 1st, hey we have two more months left and a lot can happen in 60 days. Keep at it folks.

    11/1

    Weight lost YTD: -6.5

This week's successes: Adding more core work, planks, etc, averaging about 8500 steps per day.
This week's challenges : Log my food daily and cut net carbs

    This week's successes:
    • All intake logged.
    • Step goal met (reduced to be realistic post-operation), working on physical therapy.
    • Survived COVID

    This week's challenges:
    • Emotionally burned out

It's been a battle in isolation over the last week and a half. I managed to pick up COVID (90% sure it was a specific nurse who was assigned to me early on in the hospitalization), but thankfully seem to have avoided the worst of the symptoms/complications. The isolation has really worn on me. I'm discharged this afternoon to a hotel since I'm not physically safe to return home until I'm weight bearing. Though to be honest, I'm thinking it will be better than being here, in many ways, especially considering one of the nursing staff who they've assigned to me a few times. Had a mid line complication, he didn't listen to me, dug around in my hand to do an IV with a needle that I said was too large, which started an anxiety/panic attack... Fun times. Not. Anyway, I get to come in every day for IV infusions for the next three weeks, have 2+ more surgeries ahead (had another one yesterday), other appointments... I will adhere, but inside I just feel "done." I know logically I need to push past this, and will continue to try, though fighting the argument that it's all pointless in my head is getting harder and harder.

People say "hang in there." I do my best to understand they are generally coming from a place of care/concern, but all it seems to me is an image of a kitten hanging from a tree branch by one claw. Frankly, I only went into this original surgery to fix something because that was "taking care of myself" which is something I'm supposed to do to "get out of the mental illness hole." So much for that. Sorry, as I said, I'm stuck in a bad spot.

Hope the rest of you are doing OK.

    Original post:

@MelodiousMermaid - "image of a kitten hanging from a tree branch by one claw" ... I can see that poster perfectly. Not going to say hang in there but I will say ... please feel free to vent, share and just talk through your concerns. We are listening even if we are not always commenting.
I hope that you are recovering quickly so that you can get home as well as comfortable soon.
