Trails yesterday, 5 miles running plus 5k hiking. We went off the usual path trying to find out where the local kids go along the Wolf river bank when we see lights strung back in the woods at night - I have been told there’s a sandy beach back there. We didn’t find the right beach I don’t think, unless the kids around there are VERY conscientious - no trash at all - but we did find A beach. We ended up following a deer trail into chiggerville, tons of long grass tramped down. We flushed a sleepy doe out of the grass and she looked very surprised.
The run itself was hot and slow - almost 80 - but otherwise nice. I checked out my Strava flybys when done and found the well fit young couple who passed us right as we arrived were a newly married couple having their first married run together! Many happy returns to them! And the older dude slogging by was in the middle of an 11 miler, good for him. I love looking at my flybys, it’s a unexpected window into all sorts of stories. Like, the nice lady who said hi to us as she passed us a couple weeks ago is a running coach, and although she was running about our pace that day, her best mile is 4 minutes and something and her best marathon time is under three hours! And one of the tiny handful of people who run behind my grocery store is the dude who won the St Jude Marathon last year!
Does anyone know what these are? We thought they were some sort of nut, but when punctured they are full of blood red juice.

@Avidkeo thank you for the recommendations! Also! I did see some Asics on sale!!!! Like $60! I can't remember where, but it is definitely happening!1
-
@rheddmobile that place is beautiful!
Never heard of flyby's and rarely use my strava account! Maybe I should.
Just found out my family in Nashville is cancelling Thanksgiving. Cool. I understand why and I understand safety but can 2020 please just be over.7 -
@Avidkeo You are doing great on your approach to recovery and being patient, even with the setbacks. Hope the shoes work out!1
-
@rheddmobile Sounds like you had a nice run/hike. Wonder what the strava flybys say about you? I have no idea what those are? Could it be an insects cocoon?0

I did yoga this morning, even though I thought I was too busy to take the time, and I was glad I did it. But I didn't get a run in before or after that, so had to do it after work. I chose a short trail loop so that I knew it wouldn't take too long and I wouldn't be watching my watch to see when I could turn around the whole time. I felt like I was going faster than usual for this route but Garmin says no and gave me the blue/green rating for most of it. So hard to please!
Thanks all for the encouragement on the contact wearing. I had better success today. I definitely did not have one in my left eye yesterday and I could tell right away that I saw better this morning when I put two in. With a little struggle still, but better. And I got them out easily at the end of the day. I'm having some trouble with distance vision though which I don't really need much correction for but I know the doctor was telling me it was a balance to correct the near and not make the distance worse. We'll see how it goes. I did like not wearing my glasses all day.

I've worn glasses ever since I was 8 - this makes me want to get Lasik.
@Avidkeo Glad you didn't give into the temptations. You're doing good, and there is no such thing as being too careful when it comes to recovery!
@rheddmobile That's so interesting! Too bad nobody around where I live uses Strava.2 -
If any of you are Amazon Prime members, they are having some good deals on Garmins right now. I had been wanting a new watch to replace my Forerunner 245, and I was able to order a Vivoactive 4s for $199 - they are usually $350.
Pump last night, but no run. Things are busy busy.4 -

OK, thanks to you I just ordered a new Garmin 645. I'm calling it a present to myself for surviving grant writing, and an early birthday gift
Seriously, thanks for the prime deal tip!

It was another really pretty morning. The sky was clear and there were tons of stars and a pretty crescent moon. It was about 20 degrees warmer at 65°F instead of the 45°F we had yesterday. But that was ok with me. The humidity was low and it was really nice out. I ran 6.2 miles so made it a 10K. It wasn't my fastest run, but wasn't my slowest either. Nothing eventful happened. I just enjoyed being out there and running.

Easy run this morning before work. I have never considered myself a morning runner and, given my druthers I would probably prefer to run about 9-10am, but I have really grown to enjoy getting my run done before work. It's pretty quiet, and right now is much cooler. I may keep this morning running thing moving forward. The only problem is having time for longer runs. I moved my long run to Saturday, so that's not an issue, but during the week I can only get about 3.5 miles in before work and still have time to get ready. So, as I get farther into HM training, I may have to pick up some evening runs again. But at least it will be winter. And, I actually really enjoy running at night. Especially Friday night. Talk about quiet!
@marisap2010 That's a great deal! I have the vivoactive 4s and really like it. It's a good blend of fitness tracker and smart watch. This was my first watch with integrated GPS, and I LOVE that! It's so nice to be able to leave my phone at home sometimes.
@noblsheep I wholeheartedly endorse Lasik! Everyone I know who has had it loves it. It's just so convenient.
@rheddmobile I've never seen the flyby's thing on strava. I'm going to have to look into that. I know there are several people in my neighborhood who use it, and probably a few who I see every morning. I think that would be super interesting.5 -
Nice and cool for my morning run. Went ahead and ran 6.39 instead of my customary 5 because I didn't have to rush to work this morning. Had labs drawn for my annual physical next week.
October: 53.3 miles (46.7 to go)
Space Race: 242.11 miles (6.39 to go!!!)6 -
@katharmonic woo hoo good present to yourself! I never really got used to contacts. Maybe the ones I got weren't great, but my vision just never felt right. I have some and use them in summer when doing long runs, I have prescription sunglasses but they are more fashion glasses so not great for running. I have proper sports sunglasses, but have to wear contacts with them. I think i may have to get prescription sports sunglasses. Or maybe one day get lasik!
@WandaVaughn nice run! Hope your physical goes well next week.
@martaindale I never used to be a morning runner used to always do it in the evening, but with 2 young kids, I moved it to early morning because it was really the only time I could get it in. After 3 years, I now absolutely love my early morning runs - though I limit it to 5am, no earlier! It's so calm and still. Almost no one around, very few cars. It's actually my favourite part of the day. That said, I'm asleep by 930pm most days as a result lol.
Thanks for all the encouragement everyone.
Calf is doing its usual niggly for first few steps and eases. Its definitely a pulling feeling today. I did a good ride on my stationery bike, then did my calf test. I hop on one foot across the floor. I am pain free doing this so I'm getting more convinced it's scar build up. Iwhen I went to roll it out, I noticed a knot that kept jumping over the roller (shudder, awful feeling). So I got some oil, and did a deep massage on it, then got the squash ball out and did a deep massage with it. It felt so much better. So I might have to get a proper deep massage to break it up. I'm supposed to run tomorrow, unsure as yet. Will see how today goes (8am here), if it's the same or better then I'll run. But if it gets worse I'll skip it.

I keep my activities in Strava set to followers only, so I don't think the flybys work for me... but a couple years ago on a race I had set to public, I realized someone cheated (and as a result finished ahead of me) by getting a ride in a vehicle. He then got out near the finish and crossed the line and was listed in the final results. His activity had his full name, and I easily found his Facebook and saw that he worked for one of the race sponsors. I didn't turn him in because he didn't take any awards. Maybe I should have. It was discouraging though because I was injured and shouldn't've even been in the race. At one difficult point (it was a half marathon), a truck went by and a bunch of guys asked if I wanted a ride. I thought they must be stupid or something - couldn't they see I was in a race? But then I vaguely remember seeing a guy sitting in the back. Didn't make the connection until I saw the flyby later.
Come to think of it, that was back when we were all running for @KeepRunningFatboy
I biked today. Almost got hit by a beet truck. Fortunately, he was empty and going uphill, because I think that's the only reason he was able to slow down in time. Pretty scary thing to hear coming behind you, while realizing there's no shoulder, nowhere to go, and oncoming traffic, so he couldn't move over either). I had my rear red light flashing and a high-vis backpack on. Maybe it saved me by allowing that driver to see me a few seconds earlier.
I'm rambling. Anyway, this weekend I [hopefully] have Parkrun and a 5k trail race Fun!9 -
Afternoon, everybody! Let me just rant for one whole sentence:
The healthcare system in the US is so effed up, like real bad. it's worse when your company is self-insured. I spent $168 today out of my HSA so that I could let the ob/gyn tell me that my vagina and boobs are awesome and that the endometriosis is under control - for now. I don't think even hookers make that much money. $168 for twenty minutes! And! I HAVE TO go so he'll keep refilling my endo meds! It's not optional! AND I don't want to switch doctors because he actually is the best. BUT I DID NOT FEEL VERY INCENTIVIZED TO COME TO WORK TODAY AFTER THAT, LET ALONE GIVE THEM ANY EFFORT. Yep, there are starving kids. Yep, we have a solid, bad homeless problem. There are people without jobs at all. There are people that do not know peace. There are people who have kids with cancer. I am SO grateful for my life. But........................ addressing the problem of our healthcare system is not the same thing as being ungrateful. Right?
That was more than one sentence. Also in regard to massage @Avidkeo my coach said I need to get a massage every two weeks. I had planned to use my HSA for that. I also need to get new running shoes and I am going to wait a couple of weeks on that because I want to build my HSA back up.
@Tramboman, I can't even describe on screen with words the face I made when you said it was beautiful running weather this morning. Blech! Yesterday was 45 for me at 4am and I HATE being cold and I HATE drowning in cold air and suffocating (asthma). But then for my second run yesterday, it was 73 and sunny and i had MUCH faster pace. I am better at everything when I've had coffee and food. My pace was like FOUR MINUTES faster in the evening than in the morning! From 14 to 10 something!
Today was day 2 of 4am. It was easier to get out of bed and get going. I had one cup of coffee, which I did not think would be too much - but after the full sixty minutes of running, I HAD to get home. I almost didn't make it to the bathroom. It was bad. Like real bad. I'm going to need to make sure all the necessary constitutions are had before I leave the house. I seriously thought about going in someone's yard, it was that bad. But you know, now everybody has security cameras and I am not going to jail for that. Also. Yes, I realize that would be incredibly rude, rotfl.
Yesterday was the full Day 1 with the coach, running and lifting. The structure is good. My core is more sore than I expected. I thought it would be my quads. I am really happy with how this is going, so far. He said I really only need to lift two days a week, but then I think, well actually Sally McRae lifts six days a week, so.... I know, I am not Sally McRae (but I wanna be).
@kgirlhart we have similar weather, I think. It was 52 here for me this morning and quite enjoyable.
@martaindale Doubles aren't the worst thing.
@Avidkeo I never thought I'd be a morning runner but now it's so necessary. To do what i am trying to do (the 100 miler in December), I have to be really ready, physically. And that crazy plan cannot take away from my kids. So 4am, it is!
@noblsheep @katharmonic I have always needed glasses too. Again with the contacts - I have them - but they annoy me. And lately I really haven't been as consistent with my glasses as I should be. I don't know why. Maybe I'm letting myself go, lmao. Or maybe I just couldn't find them and I did find them today (hahahahhaha). I am petrified of Lasik. Because my sister had it done and she told me you can see the thingy coming down toward your eye. No *kitten* thank you. I will punch somebody! I can't do it. Glasses or contacts. But not THAT!
So no lifting today. Probably stretching and foam rolling. Dinner plans got cancelled too, so I think what we'll do at my house is move the coffee table away from the front of the couch and make a pallet so we can all lay with the dog and a spread of snacks and watch something scary. I'm looking forward to just the cuddles with the kids and the dog. Down time is so important.
This post is so long. I'm sorry.5 -
And @polskagirl01 if you get hit by a beet truck I will seriously be so pissed. Please don't. I have never even gotten to hug you!4

Do you not recall that beauty is in the eye of the beholder???????
There was a time (and not all that long ago) that I would have thought 45 degrees F was pretty cold running weather. But a little sunshine trumps temperature, precipitation, and wind.4 -

@Tramboman true, true. I did get some really beautiful photos yesterday in spite of the cold and I will admit that personal growth is a beautiful thing as well. Even though I still hate being cold
@polskagirl01 oh good, lol. "The Beet Truck Got Her," is a horrible headline2 -
Sorry, skipping through. Up at 4am for a 200 mile drive for an interview, off tomorrow to see my Dad for another 150 miles and then back to pick my daughter up from the airport before doing almost the same again on Friday. Got to keep putting yourself out there if things are going to happen. No time for running right now.10

I am on the home stretch with my work deadline so I'm just trying to think of how happy I'll be Friday afternoon and forget being deliriously tired now. I once again skipped run group tonight in favor of talking the dog out for a run to get both of us our exercise for the day at one time. Lots of stop starts but we managed the 3 miles before it got dark.
I put in a grocery order this morning and picked that up after work, and it was so nice not to have to spend the time shopping and to finally have some food in the house. And I picked up some wine so that's helping too.

@Camaramandy648 Thanks on the race. very true! And I got $35 in gift card to local sport shop. Time to go look at shoes.
Your story yet again made me laugh. The going in the neighbors yard. Yeah don’t. Lol. Agree on the healthcare. So much so.
I run in the mornings, if I don’t I won’t get it done. Was 52 here to start as well. Did 7.38 miles. Was a good run! Don’t say that too often haha.
@quilteryoyo Thanks to you to for the race comments. So glad the cath went well. When is the surgery?
@polskagirl01 Oh no, stupid beet truck. Reminded me of Dwight Shrute from the Office! He had a beet farm. Glad you are ok.

Still no run. Did something funny to a hip flexor last night during HIIT. Wanted to just tape it up and keep going, but discovered I'd run out of KT tape and forgot to buy a new roll. So no running this morning. Can't tell how bad it is just yet. Will keep everybody posted.
@katharmonic Welcome to the 645 club! Did you get the version with or without music?
@polskagirl01 Getting hit by something is one of my biggest fears when running or cycling. Hasn't happened yet (fingers crossed). I've designed my cycling commute route so that there are bike lanes all the way, even if it takes a little longer.
@Camaramandy648 LOL at other people's yards. And please don't start lifting six times a week, especially if you're sore... that would just be a terrible idea.5 -

I had a nice short run in the rain in the woods this morning. Then I saw that one of our favorite local restaurants burnt down
@TheMrWobbly best wishes on the interview!
Happy running, everyone!5 -
Best of luck on the interview @TheMrWobbly! My son is also interviewing today. I really feel for the folks looking for work these days, it is brutal out there
@polskagirl01 that is sad about the restaurant burning down. Hate to see small businesses having hard times.
6.2 miles this morning. One of the best runs I have had in a long time. New Ghost 12s (they arrived in 1 day)!! Purposely took it easy, mostly because it was 76F starting out, but also because of the new shoes. Kept reminding myself to stay slow. HR averaged 121 bpm, so it didn't feel hard at all, even at an average pace of 9:30/mi. Legs and everything else feel great after the run; not any of the normal aches and pains. Must be the shoes, right?
