@marisap2010 I think @RunsOnEspresso has done some of the Garmin training plans. I remember her talking about how she like the way they adjust in real time based on performance.
Pretty good run for a Monday. Decided to extend the run after about 4 miles since I was just starting to feel good. Was quite a bit hillier (is that a word?), but felt good to get a 10K done early in the week.

@kgirlhart Good luck with the new job today! You are going to rock it! Glad the pit bulls were friendly. They can be very friendly, sweet dogs. It just depends on the owner and how they are treated. I guess you can say that about all dogs though.
@mbaker566 I would consider taking Finn if my situation were different right now. But, I've decided Tippy and I like being a single dog, laid back, family. And, with surgery coming up, I just can't. Hope he finds a great home soon! I'm guessing Speed Demon was taking a rest day.
@marisap2010 I have not used the Garmin plans, but am interested to see how it goes.
@ContraryMaryMary Sounds like you have a great weekend to look forward to!

@mbaker566 personally I find it rude when people have music blaring for all to hear... and they do make headphones that don't block your hearing (anything "bone-conducting") and are therefore much safer, but as long as you aren't running next to me with your music on, I'll probably get over it
When my husband and I did the Starry Nights 5k last year (nighttime run through Christmas light display at the park) a guy near us was running with a speaker blaring Christmas music. I kind of enjoyed it for a while but then wanted to be in the still night time so we ran faster until we couldn’t hear him. And I heard some other runners complaining. Of course I couldn’t really object too much since I had bells tied to my hair!
I don’t usually mind other runners playing music and sometimes find it entertaining, like the very hardcore serious looking guy with military haircut who was running to Scott Joplin the other day. Hilarious. And there was a little bitty woman running to rap music with explicit lyrics which was also funny. But I want to be able to hear what’s around me, not just for safety but because I like nature. Of course if you are running on the street nature isn’t as much of an issue.2 -
Treadmill speedwork this morning, to get back on schedule of doing it earlier in the week. I'm also considering what to do about the now-officially-canceled race this coming weekend. I can go run the course by myself, in a mask, but I'm not sure I have a good reason to.

October miles: 63.1 (just 36.9 to go)
Saturday was nice, I slept in with the hubs, went fishing and caught lots of fish, went to a friend's cookout. (don't worry, we were all distancing and wearing masks and going through lots of sanitizer. The bonfire was glorious!) Sunday we had a lovely service and beautiful weather to enjoy during the afternoon.
BUT this morning I had to almost yell at myself to get out of bed and run 3 miles. I'm floundering without a plan. Do the next virtual race from 10/31 to 12/25 ? Pull out Hal's marathon plan and try my hand (feet) at that? But will there even be a race to look forward to in 12+ weeks? Hard to get excited about that without a finish line to look for.
I guess I'm feeling rudderless in most areas of my life right now. Running is taking a hit and I don't want to lose the forward momentum that I've fought to get.
Sorry for the whining. I should just count my blessings and be happy with that.9 -

@polskagirl01 You have a reason to... me 😂
Remember the one we ran 'together' back in March? Mine was put off to this weekend. And then cancelled. But I'm running it anyway. Again. Outside with a lot of up and down of mask.5 -

Hmmmmm... how fitting 😂. And sad, too.
Let me think about this and I'll get back to you.
ETA: just asked kiddo if he wanted to do another half marathon on his bike with me at the lake. He says, "Why don't we do it twice and count it as a marathon?" HAHAHAHAHA no.WandaVaughn wrote: »I guess I'm feeling rudderless in most areas of my life right now. Running is taking a hit and I don't want to lose the forward momentum that I've fought to get.

I can echo a lot of what you're expressing. In many ways, this has honestly been one of my best years of life - SO much better than my 2019 - but then there are all of these disappointments, too. It's ok to stop, step back, and reassess why we're doing things and if/how we should continue. Of course we should continue running. But some of the other stuff... 😉4 -
@polskagirl01 I like the way he thinks!2

Has anyone used the Garmin training plans? I decided to try to improve my 5k time since I am burned out on long distances, so I signed up for “Coach Greg.” Looks like the plan adjusts according to your progress each run, so I guess like Hal? I start today.
I started one but didn't finish. It was more I decided to do something different.
It does adjust as you go. The biggest drawback for me was you can't see future workouts. With Hal I can see his general plan through race day & then it makes little adjustments.
Garmin you can move workouts around. Hal doesn't allow that.
Garmin also won't let you enter a race date isn't X weeks out (I can't recall the number). Hal does but says it may be hard.
Both have pros and cons.
ETA Garmin sends all workouts to your watch so it's waaaaay easy.4 -
meh. 2 miles today. Not feeling it, it was raining so had to run inside on the treadmill. Still did it though. Getting new shoes on Thursday, so maybe that will help bring back some motivation.

I was major into this early on in quarantine. I basically didn't have work for a few weeks as everything got shut down and something about being at home all the time with no reason to be anywhere just sucked the motivation out of me. Also, I think I was feeling a lot more stress around COVID and general life changes. I just didn't realize it in the moment.
So, I ran a little. But mostly I just gave myself a break. If I really didn't feel like doing it, I just didn't. I would take a walk instead. I knew I needed to see the sun and get out of the house, and I can always talk myself into a walk. It kept me moving without feeling like I was forcing myself to run. For me, getting back to a more normal weekly routine with work and school for the kid actually made it easier to run. I am such a creature of habit.
I think a lot of people are feeling some of this right now. Your motivation will return. Until then, do what you can and cut yourself some slack. I think in general people are doing the best they can.5 -
I briefly tried a garmin plan, and I liked having the workout on my watch and the ability to adapt easily. I didn't use it for marathon training cause its so picky about how far out you can plan. Whereas Hal you can plan way in advance and he gives you a basic plan till the official plan starts.
I felt great after yesterday's run, no niggles or pain or anything. Then in the afternoon I was working with a patient, and had squatted down. When I stood up, I put all my weight through that leg and it hurt. So it's back to being niggly when I walk, though eases quickly. 2 steps forward, 1 step back. I see the physio again on Thursday.9 -
@Avidkeo I'm sorry it's taking so long to heal. It sounds like you're doing things right though and balancing being careful with staying active. I hope the physio has some good news/observations/suggestions for you.3

117 posts behind. I've skimmed. Which I actually hate to do, but 117!
Never tried a Garmin and do not own one and am afraid to get one bc they are expensive and because of all the issues they've been having lately.
@Tramboman 45F and a cold rain here this morning at 4am! I also saw a coyote! Good run, felt stronger and faster. I was having fun.
Last week I was complaining about exactly the same conditions. Perspective is everything. Today, 4am doesn't seem like it's that big of a deal.
I need to run 110 miles in the next twelve days to reach my stretch goal of 220 for October. I think before I had said 217 or something. Well, I'm a brat so I want 220 now. I think I can do it if I keep running doubles two days a week and long distances on the weekends. Just keep stacking the mileage!
Had a for real, scheduled rest day. it was brilliant! Exactly what the mind and body needed.
Aside from running, I need to remember to also be living. Need to figure out Halloween. Also, I just have lifting left to do today, so I'd really like to snuggle my kids after that. Just be warm and eat and love each other.
Okay, maybe I am a little tired...10 -
@Camaramandy648 As you once told me, listen to your body!

@WandaVaughn it's tough without a goal and a plan to follow. I've struggled too with no races on the calendar. I'm probably going to have my lowest mileage month in a long time for that reason and various other work and life challenges. I can't figure out how in the past I've managed to get my training in during a busy fall time - it all seems hard now. Hope you can find some inspiration.
@HonuNui wonderful memorial run for you son.
Congrats on the in-person races @RunsOnEspresso and @T1DCarnivoreRunner.
Oh, and @Teresa502! Great job on your 5k, especially an uphill second half. And I didn't wear my new boots for hiking but your story makes me kind of wish I had. Except for they would have gotten so muddy.
Sorry to have skimmed and lost track a little.

Yesterday I had a big hike and ran 15 minutes during it (story below). Today's run was a warmup before strength training. For the first time since March, I used the treadmill because it was raining and I didn't feel up to getting soaking wet before class. I managed to wear the mask and it was not great, but not as bad as I feared.
The hike was 3 more of the 46 high peaks of the Adirondacks, which puts me at a total of 20/46 done. This was the Seward Range and it was a tough one. A couple of people have told me they rank it the hardest of all the high peaks hikes. It wasn't the hardest in terms of steepness or climbing, but it was very long and very, very muddy which took its toll. We started hiking at 4 am in the dark and finished at about 7:15 pm, also in the dark. The mud was really tough to navigate and made it slow going and miserable on the feet. The descent down the last mountain was very steep and a little icy so it took us a long time. And then we still had 5 miles on a flatter trail to get back to the trailhead. Very mentally tough to keep going when you are feeling so over it all. But we made it, and it was beautiful and inspiring, as they all are.
Oh, and i had to do my 15 minute run during the hike out because I knew we may not get home until very late. That was about 13.5 hours into the 15 hour hike. I didn't want to be alone for too long so I ran out 10 minutes and back 5 and reunited with my group (who surprisingly were not interested in a little impromptu run with me.

Thanks for the feedback on the Garmin training. Last night was the benchmark run. I’ll give it a few weeks and see how it goes. I don’t have anything for which I am actually training, just wanted some time improvement, so we’ll see if I stick with it the whole 12 weeks.
I also completed a Tabata workout last night. Trying so hard to keep up strength training!5 -
Beautiful pictures @katharmonic ! I'm impressed that you ran, in your hiking boots, after hiking for that long.
