October 2020 Monthly Running Challange

Bike ride today, 22.5 km on back roads. One part was muddy and I was just trying to keep the bike upright and going forward, while Reddie the squirrel taunted me from the trees. I'm sure it's the same squirrel - he's always in that same spot and must be territorial or something.
Then I finally followed a sign I've seen before and found a spring not far off of my route. I didn't have a bottle or anything to try the water, and was wearing gloves, but there was a sign and certificate posted that said it was safe for drinking.
Later I saw a European hamster, and immediately stopped and got my phone out to take his picture. He was too fast though, and after growling at me and acting like he was about to charge at me, he ran back across the road and into a field. It's hard to take their threats seriously when they're so cute 🐹
Probably should take a rest day tomorrow.
@eleanorhawkins I don't think I'm going to run that race route this weekend. It will be crowded with cyclists and people, meaning I'd have little chance of relief from the mask. I've run there plenty of times before, and I have nothing to prove by doing it again. I think I need to just let go of this race. I may do the distance on back roads close to home, or maybe not
October Goal - 100 Miles

@polskagirl01 - I had to google European Hamster - they are cuties!2
-
6.5 miles this morning. Nice easy run. Felt relaxed and comfortable even though it was 71F and 100% humidity according to phone.

@kgirlhart So glad that you are liking your new job and figuring out how to get your workouts in too! I struggle with that when I work. I just can't seem to make myself get up at 4:15 to exercise.
@polskagirl01 Just googled European Hamsters. They are cute! Also saw that they are now on the "critically endangered list." Do you see them often?

I got a call from the surgeon's nurse yesterday. My surgery will be scheduled for 4 Nov, only 2 weeks away. I'll have some pre-op stuff to do the week before. It's getting real you all.10

Hard to get excited about that without a finish line to look for.
I guess I'm feeling rudderless in most areas of my life right now. Running is taking a hit and I don't want to lose the forward momentum that I've fought to get.
I understand this.
Running - no IRL events
Swimming - Pool still closed
Infections increasing so not going to be any events for a while.
So many gorgeous photo's. In the north country all the leaves have dropped and we have the first skiff of snow already. Been out scouting some new/old trails that need some maintenance - new bridge on one and dangerous tree removal on another. Stay safe everyone
@Avidkeo feel your frustration with the niggles. Still not running, but getting some great Trail walks in before the snow shuts the trails down7 -

Mostly cloudy and low 60s F this morning. Rained hard enough during the night to wake me up twice, and was still raining this morning, but had a window to get out and run. Saw a couple peeks of sun that were balanced by a couple of raindrops, so it all worked out.

Legwork last night, really sore today. 5km to shake out a bit. Getting too cold for shorts. And I need to buy some new gloves.
@polskagirl01 That sounds really cute!
@skippygirlsmom @kgirlhart Getting up that early is brutal. Kudos on getting out there.
@shanaber Congrats on getting to the bathroom in time! And Hobbes really does rock the colors.
@Avidkeo That's good news. Sounds like you're making good progress.
@rheddmobile Looks like an awesome route. LOL at the redneck portapotty and horse poop.3 -

By the way, Congrats (if that's an appropriate wish) on getting your surgery date! I am glad you don't have a very long wait. Maybe it seems long right now, though. You've got this!3 -

So far behind! Started a post to respond to all of you yesterday, but work got ridiculously busy late in the day. Like after 4:30pm late. I leave at 5. Not yesterday! it's okay, it all ends up being money. Whatever.
@quilteryoyo Nov 4! Just two weeks! I will be praying for you!
Everyone running - yay! KEEP GOING!
Everyone not running and struggling with one issue or another - I read your posts. I love you. You're going to make it out on the other side! Listen to your body! You've come so far! You are doing so well!
@martaindale yay about your race this weekend! Woohoo!
The 4am awakening every day is beginning to feel more normal. It has been cold and raining. Today it was SO foggy. It was still a lot of fun, though. I'm not a morning person and I can't say actual words before coffee, so I've begun having 1 cup of coffee, the stumbling out the door. I can barely walk in a straight line that early, so the other thing I've done to WAKE UP is listen to whatever rap or hip hop I can find that makes my feet want to move. Running is dancing.
Yesterday was doubles and lifting. So I ran at 4am and 7pm, then lifted. Between those things I worked, parented the kids and the dog, made dinner, did the laundry, picked up legos. It was a good day. The beauty of lifting less than twelve hours before your next run is that when you run again, you aren't sore yet.
I am sore now, though. Yep. Hanging jackknives were on the menu for part of the lifting last night. That is not an easy move. I kept thinking, "Stop being a sissy! DO IT!" But I'm telling you, those are hARD. I got through it though.
Tonight is the weekly dinner with Nick and Sophie. it's the one day a week I eat whatever is put in front of me (if I am not cooking, and tonight, I'm not - they are) and we are going to watch a movie. I'm excited to just RELAX. I hope I don't fall asleep during the movie.
Anyway. That's my update. Same running but with more intensity and volume and lifting.
I want it to be 5 now.4 -
Thanks @polskagirl01 . I think congratulations are appropriate, as I just want to get it done and start recuperating.
I guess the hamsters have to have a bad temperament to survive. They are really cute. Wonder if they respond to love.
@Camaramandy648 Thanks. Wow! You are doing a lot right now. I don't know you you keep it up.
1 -
@quilteryoyo Carefully. That's how. Very, very carefully.
With as much grace as possible. For myself, my kids, my dog, the people I work with. For example, since I work fifty hours a week. 4am is the only time I am not needed. Then, I run according to my schedule in my neighborhood. The kids know where I am the whole time, should they wake up. They have immediate access to me and I am never far.
But since i have to work, pick up kids after work, make dinner, take care of the dog, clean the house - I multitask a lot. Like last night, while I was making dinner, I was also on the kitchen floor doing the warmup for the evening run at the same time that laundry was going - See? Carefully. Fit as much in as possible, take care of priorities, make it work. That's all a person can do. Right?
How are you feeling? Are you anxious? Anything we can do for you as a group?2 -
I still say you are amazing @Camaramandy648 . I am a little anxious, but am feeling fine. I don't think there is anything you all can do for me, except for what you are already doing - being here to listen, encourage, and let me vent when I need to.4

Another early morning 10K for me. It was a nice run, but it was kind of warm. The new job is pretty busy, so I have not been keeping up with the thread.
My rescheduled Half is in just over 2 weeks. So far it is still a go. I'm looking forward to it. I can't decide if I need to taper or not.
@quilteryoyo I'm glad you got the surgery date. We'll be praying for you.
@polskagirl01 Those European hamsters are really cute.

@quilteryoyo, Nov 4 is my birthday, so that should mean it's a great and lucky day. I'm sure it does seem much more real to have that date. We'll all keep you company here as much as you need and keep sending all the good vibes your way.
Hey @juliet3455 great to see you pop in! Glad you're at least getting out on some trails. Snow already, huh. We're supposed to have a 76 degree day on Friday and then I see some snow in forecast for next Friday.

I finally made it back to a group speedwork night, and it was a pleasant night out there weather-wise. The workout was a 20-minute tempo run, and we did 10 minutes warmup before, tempo run, then 4 sprints, and then a 10 minute cooldown. I am still a little stiff from hiking so I didn't anticipate running it at full effort. My pace was better than I thought it would be, especially in the second half after I was more warmed up.5 -

We're back in full lockdown for the next 6 weeks & not allow to travel more the 3 miles from home other than essential travel. I'm so glad we managed to get away for a few days.
@quilteryoyo - Glad you have a date for your op
7 -
On last night’s Garmin trainer agenda was 5 minute warmup, 30 minutes “easy” at a 10:11-11:11 pace, then 5 minute cool down. I ended up with 3.61 miles. My biggest struggle was going too fast - my watch kept buzzing at me to slow down.
Tonight will be a rest night with maybe some light weights or stretching if I feel like it.6 -
Thanks @kgirlhart @katharmonic @Mari33a, and anyone else I missed.
@kgirlhart Fingers crossed that your race is held. Sorry to hear about your lockdown @Mari33a . Glad you were able to get away and back home before that happened. I've forgotten. Where do you live?
@katharmonic Sounds like a great workout. Glad you were able to handle it better than expected.
@marisap2010 Nice to see the Garmin trainer working out for you. That constant buzzing because you are doing something no exactly right can be annoying. I have some workouts on mine that I have HR zones programmed. Well, when doing speed work, even when you slow down, your HR is not going to instantaneously go from Zone 5 to Zone 1. So, it buzzes at me all of the time. I just ignore it. LOL3 -
@marisap2010 and @quilteryoyo - I tried setting the pace alerts low and high only once I think, and the constant buzzing drove me insane. It is way too hard for me to maintain a tight pace range, I can image the heart rate is harder still with the delayed reaction to speeding up or slowing down. But sounds like a good workout plan from Garmin.

Speaking of Garmins, my new Forerunner 645 is way fancier than my old 235, but we have not quite figured each other out yet. The treadmill calibration is still not right but now it's in the opposite direction of being too slow rather than too fast on pace. Eventually hopefully it will land on something semi-accurate. Then this morning after my treadmill warmup run I did strength training class. I didn't record anything on the watch during strength but when I connected to the app and uploaded data, it detected that I had done an activity with it's "MoveIQ" - but somehow it thinks I was swimming. LOL. I was doing an interval workout on the rower so I guess that motion read as swimming to it. It's trying.

@kgirlhart how’s the new job? Based on your mileage I wouldn’t bother really with a taper, maybe just adjust to a short shake out or nothing the day before. You have been doing 6 then banging out a long double digit with no problem.
@rheddmobile we have a 5K race here that goes through the Botanical Gardens when the Christmas display is up, it’s usually a ride through thing. It’s a lot of fun and they play Christmas music through the whole thing. I have to say (nothing against your bells LOL) but that makes me nuts along with others who play their music like we all want to hear it.
@quilteryoyo glad you have a date for your surgery so now you know on the 5th you’ll be well on the way to recovery.
Thanks @noblsheep once it becomes routine it’s not bad, I know if I leave running until after work I don’t get there. It’s also so quiet when the rest of the world is still asleep.

@katharmonic It is hard for me to maintain a pace too, with all of the hills around here. But, I still enjoy the ability to enter my own workouts into the watch so I don't have to remember which interval I'm on while trying not to die. LOL Love your description of how your new Garmin is "trying." At least swimming and rowing are both water sports, so it had that much right.
@Tramboman The key word there is "could." You did it.

Tempo run today. It was pretty short though, which is good. The humidity is extreme this week and it just sucks the energy out of me. These last few morning runs have been a little hard.
Last night, I finally tested out for lead climbing! That's where you are clipping yourself into the wall as you climb up the route. I could have done it a long time ago but my husband and I were content on top rope. However, my daughter is getting to the age group where they compete on lead and we also want to be able to climb more outside. So, getting some practice in is important.6 -
@Mari33a Sorry to hear about the lockdown - you’re in Ireland, is that right? Cases over there are so scary right now.
@polskagirl01 every time you mention the attack hamsters I can’t help giggling! So I looked them up and on YouTube there is a video of a couple of young men trying to shoo one out of the road and it straight up savages them, one guy’s hand is bleeding and he ends up carrying it to safety on the end of a shoe when it locks on with its tiny jaws like a vicious pit bull! In between it is leaping through the air at them like the vorpal bunny from Monty Python. Holy cow I had no idea!7 -
Wednesday finally back to running 8 miles without a walk break! That was my goal for October and I did it, although I felt like I was crawling along for the last two miles. For some reason the jump between seven and eight miles is exponentially more difficult for me, it’s ridiculous.
Ran on the Greenline. It was hot, 82 by the time we finished. But lovely, crisp blue skies with golden leaves floating down.9 -
Peeping in to say I have 73.9 October miles so far. 26.1 to go.
My doctor's appointment went well yesterday. My numbers are all good. He was very pleased to see my weight where it is -- he mentioned too many other patients have been huddled up and eating baked bread for the last 6 months. lol. Good news for someone about to turn 53. ( @katharmonic my b'day is 11/4, too!)9 -
4AM is starting to feel like something a normal person would do. Running doubles today because I don't want to tomorrow - it's Friday and therefore, I work ten hours then drive the kids to see their dad, which is a total of two hours, right after work. I won't be home til around 8:30PM, so I'll lift, but I'm not running doubles AND lifting AND driving tomorrow.
The good news is both the coach and I can edit the plan so that it fits my schedule.
This morning was fun, though I had dinner and watched Army of Darkness last night and ate THREE PLATES of pasta. THREE PLATES. I guess I was hungry. *shrug*
Only issue i have this morning is that I am very tired and I think I need more food and more water. I'm eating now and just grabbed a fresh bottle of water so I should be feeling more like me soon.
I am ready for tonight's run - just thirty minutes and I am much nicer and much faster in the evenings.5 -
@rheddmobile Congratulations on reaching your goal of running 8 miles without a break. You are doing fantastic!
