Monday October 26 - AF - Easy decision, early workday on Tuesdays.

Dawn I remember you joined us in October , but was not sure the date. HAPPY TWO YEARS of accountability and drinking LESS! Let's not forget your weight loss too.
Sorry your photo could not be shrunk down. It is such a great picture of you. AND you have already hit next to your high goal mark.
Your rock'n.3 -
Tonight we have a seminar to attend at a reastraunt. When you get to my age people begin contacting you to try and have you invest wisely or join retirement communities. Nice thing is, they offer you a lovely fine dinner in exchange for listening to them chatter for a few hours. Hey why not? I enjoy good food.
Husband looks at it as free drinks! NOPE I told him. Dinner is no charge, your drinks you will have to pay for.
Already know this will be another alcohol free evening for me.

When it comes to calorie counting I rather eat than drink so bring on sobriety!7

15 days AF. Not celebrating my B-day until the weekend. So I made a deal with my "wine devil" that I will continue to run the AF streak until then.

I joined this thread November 28.18, one month after joining MFP.
I think that the first week I didn't change a thing, continued to drink every day after work. The second week I tried 1 AF day and it was surprisingly hard!! I think that I did the same the following week, 1AF day, then gradually tried to add an AF day to the mix each week, so 2 AF days per week. Over the following year I increased it to 3AF days per week, and eventually came to a happy place of 16-20 AF days per month.
Some people that I know really love sweets of various kinds be they pastries, pies, cakes, chocolate etc. That is not my particular vice, but I understand because of my love of cocktails of so many varieties.
People who are moderating their sweets go from 4 cookies a day to 2, or limiting sweets to twice per week. Those of us that enjoy cocktails do the same. For me (other than alcohol) my big thing is Ribs. I cut them from once per week to once per month.
I have significantly decreased my alcohol consumption over time. I am happy with where I am at with it now. I won't be joining the sobriety squad. Life is to be lived...in moderation...for me.
Lol, I am sure that I will be making a big hoopla of being on this thread when November 28.20 comes along. Keeps me accountable : - )

Okay, so, it has been very warm here, everything has melted. I was afraid to go to the trails around the first (shallowest) possible skating Lake that I have been posting photos of all week, because of the warm temperatures.
So these posts/photos of ice forming, it might just be an obsession or a problem lol.
I can stop at any time (like, really? Can I?)
I went to another lake, not a trace of ice at all!!
I walked through the adjoining campground, you can see that everything was melting.
Got a soaker
There were some friendly females who were there with their dog who was diving into the water after tennis balls. Cool. Well, for a dog it might seem cool, for a human it would likely be downright COLD!
That Lake (JimSmith Lake) never freezes nicely or smoothly, too windy there. I will x-country ski across it, or walk across it, but it is never good for skating.
As I have mentioned, I have been in a zone after my birthday week, vowing that I need to get to one trail or another each day, even if for 15 minutes on busy days. All of the chaos and divisiveness in our current climate is really really hard to take and can lead to drinking booze as an escape. Seems like insanity. Getting outside mitigates it a little.
Grateful to you all for your words, and us trying to take control of some of our habits.
@MissMay
Kind of jelly of the pond that you used to skate on, sounds like Heaven to a girl like me! I love that your dogs would prance around while you skated : - )
Really hoping that you can find an old pic of that pond!!!

Heading out for my walk this morning. I know I don't have anything as beautiful as @dawnbgethealthy scenery. Enjoyed your pics this morning.3

Still at 15 days AF. Yesterday was a challenge day for me and it started with having to get blood drawn fasting but later in the day because they were busy. A few hours before going I did an hour of BodyPump. So after the midday blood draw I found myself voracious and light headed in the supermarket on the way home, making illogical decisions: chips, cheese, dark chocolate peanut butter cups, sparkling rose then consuming all that mid-afternoon and of course feeling yukkers later.
Stupid move!
low blood sugar/hungry + supermarket = recipe for disaster always
Next time I will bring an apple, eat it after and drive myself back home. I need to remember this.
I love seeing all these pictures. And yes it's important to get a daily dose of life enjoyment as it's something we can control and can do for ourselves. It helps to release stress and worry too.
Today I start a new promise to myself: do yoga at least 1x a week for a full year. It will give me some temporary escape, rebalance and refocus.7 -
2 glasses of red wine, steak w/ roasted broccoli & cauliflower for dinner.
Enjoyed this beautiful weather we are having in Texas! Walked our dog (standard poodle) 4 miles this morning, mammogram (have you scheduled yours?), turned the soil in my front flower bed, planted 2 flats snapdragons, 1 flat pansies, 1 flat alyssum & 2 ornamental cabbages ... oh and some cilantro in my herb bed too! Then walked with DH 1 mile before he took off for his run.

Haha, for sure you don't get the snow scenery in Texas : - )
It has all melted sadly, it went from minus 10 at night (celsius) to plus 10 at nights.
Oh well, it will give me a chance to dig up some more potatoes, carrots, beets and stuff this weekend.
So fun that you are planting snapdragons and stuff this time of year, when I am itching to get out skating on the lakes.
I'm sure that I mentioned that I went to Texas last fall for 2 weeks and absolutely loved it, especially the food, and of course the hot weather.
You will have to show us a photo of your camp some time!3 -
@Lilylady3k
How envious I am that you are planting flowers and I am cutting gardens down to nubs in prep for Winter weather.
@globalhiker sorry your fasting for medical reasons took a bad turn with cravings and munching. Nice yoga goal you slipped in there 👍
@dawnbgethealthy seeing your AF days I am putting together a mental calender in my head. 20 days is one day short of 3 WEEKS. Out of a 4 week month! AWESOME numbers.
Yesterday was a whirl wind work day. 5 brutal hours of sorting, throwing, organizing a giant storage garage with folks that moved here many years ago.
Mission: accomplished!
It was a huge work out, (in my pea brain head I calculate how many calories I am burning yet at the same time adding muscle mass by running up and down those 20+ steps to the attic of that garage.)
Got home took a lovely tubby in my soaker tub. Luckily my starving self chose peach yogurt to feast on because it was too close to dinner time to have an actual proper lunch.
24AF out of 29 so far in October.4 -

It snows very little in Houston and right now is the perfect weather to get outside. Summers are just too darn hot.
I'll post some pics of the camp that I took last week ... very different from your mountains (which I would love to be around)2 -
Our fishing camp 🎣 is in the very south South Texas (Lower Laguna Madre, Arroyo Colorado, South Padre Island area). My grandfather bought the land in 1954 and the houses have evolved & expanded over the years. My mom now has one and I have the other next door ... which allows us to check on her and assist without interrupting her lifestyle.
On the Arroyo Colorado at sunrise
Out on Lower Laguna Madre to fish in the early morning. Along the international waterway there are many old homes on posts. This is not occupied any more.
Waterway that has everything from dolphins to tanker barge traffic. We have tons of birds green jays, hummingbirds, and protected wild turkeys.
Our back porch that looks out over the water

Wow what a great escape and nice pictures. I think that area of Texas is a popular birding destination.
I am closing out October with 16 AF days. See you all in the November thread!5 -
Hey there! It's been a while since I've checked in... a week? Not sure what's been going on, I just haven't been using MFP. I should be, because I haven't been logging. But, last week I sprained my ankle hiking with the kids and it's been feeling weird. As a result I haven't been exercising much and my food kind of took a downward spiral too. I'm back today and going to start logging again. The good news is, riding my horse doesn't seem to bother the ankle so I've been doing quite a bit of that!
I have missed 100 posts and unfortunately won't have time to go back and read them all. But I hope everyone is having an okay week.
We did go for one last camping trip last weekend, where I enjoyed whiskey around the fire. It was SUPER COLD here so we just had a fire nonstop and the whiskey was helpful for that as well. We brought the horses and I love sitting next to my horses at night with a fire going sipping on some really nice bourbon. However, I think that is the last camping trip of the season for sure! My kids were like "Mom, can we just go camping in the SUMMER?" HAHA. They had a good time though running around like wild hellions and we had some good rides together too.
My goal for October was 20 AF days, and I realize that I need to abstain from alcohol both tonight AND tomorrow for that to happen. However, as I look at the weekend I'm not sure I'm entirely committed mentally right now to that. I'm not going to beat myself up if I have some wine and don't meet my goal. I've been really thinking hard about my goals with regards to alcohol and how to get to a place where I don't obsessively track and where I just enjoy in moderation. I'm not sure what the answer is right now.

2 bottles of wine open (DH had a remote work happy hour at 3:30) ... I waited until after I finished cooking and we sat down for dinner and then indulged in only 2 glasses of the white with my crawfish étouffée over seared speckled trout, steamed artichoke and saute asparagus.
Then I switched to water while DH polished off the bottles while we watched movies.

I love love love your photos!!!
What a great place that you have. How wonderful for you and your fam.
The photo of the abandoned house on posts is so evocative. Truly made me start thinking of what life would have been like for people in that environment.
Thank you so much for the pictures, you are a good photographer!
Um...Do you have Alligators or Crocodiles there?3 -
I am Dawn and live in South East British Columbia. I am 60.
My goal remains the same as it has been for quite some time, 16-20 AF days per month.
Friday October 23 - AF - Always happy to see that 16AF number.
Saturday October 24 - Drinks. Awesome busy day today.
Sunday October 25 - AF - Planning on racking up a few more AF days before the month is over.
Monday October 26 - AF - Easy decision, early workday on Tuesdays.
Tuesday October 27 - AF - Cracker of a workday, but tomorrow is my 2 year anniversary on MFP, so I want to weigh as little as possible and thus remained AF : - )
Wednesday October 28 - Drinks. Planning on drinks Saturday, so will try for 2AF between now and then.
Thursday October 29 - AF - Long workday, but planning on drinks Saturday so AF today and will really try for tomorrow AF also.
Friday October 30 - AF - Pleased with my numbers this month, they will end as that since I have planned seasonal-type drinks with a friend tomorrow evening. I am also taking some N/A beer with me to intersperse since I can't drink much without throwing up. With the N/A beer I will be able to have a beverage in front of me to go with our pizza and not get drunk.
Rolling total: 21 AF days out of 30 days so far.4 -
@shorepine
Sorry to hear about your injury!
And yes, that should do it for camping for this year.
I hope that you have a trailer and not a tent lol.
Glad that you can still ride.4 -
@MissMay
I track those hard labour days as "gardening" since there doesn't really seem to be a choice for hard labour : - )
I pause my pedometre when I am doing anything like that and just let my stopwatch run and I track those hours later.
Gardening is around 300 calories per hour according to MFP, and in the spring and fall when I am doing all of that digging and hauling it really feels like I am burning way more calories than that. But...some days it is 6 hours straight, so getting an 1800 calorie burn definitely deserves a nice 750 calorie Rib Eye Steak after a day like that.
You sure got your workout in!!5 -
GOOD MORNING!
Up bright and early...before the sun even. Sitting having my coffee ( yes, back drinking java thank heavens) anticipating the sky slowly waking up and making my yard come alive.
Here is an interesting fact:
Our state sees the first rays of sun in the USA. I once went up to Cadillac Mountain in Bar Harbor with my Sister at 3:30am to wait with a massive group of other strangers cuddled up in blankets waiting for the first glimmer of light to start peaking up over the horizon. It was magical.
OK, so why am I up and excited and waiting and telling you all this ridiculous story? Because I have "purpose", "intention" a "plan".
My plan is watch the sun rise, then go do my early morning work out. There...... it will be before 9am and I have accomplished two major events already. If you plan, have a purpose or a good intention then it is easier then waking up not knowing which direction you will take.
Same with wanting to drink less.
Plan it, have intention, know your purpose.
October 31 HAPPY HALLOWEEN. My most favorite day of the year.
Rounding out my October at 26 days no alcohol
The 5 days of drinks this month were uneventful and that is a GOOD THING.
See you on the November thread.4 -

Um...Do you have Alligators or Crocodiles there?
We have spotted alligators when there is either heavy rains or flooding which are then moved back to the wildlife refuge. I've been going down to the camp for 60 years and I've only seen 2 in the last 3 years ... none before that. Of course seeing alligators can be said about any body of water in any state along the Gulf Coast. In fact when I walk our surrounding neighborhoods in Houston I've seen alligators in golf course ponds
The camp is at the edge of Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge (hence the protected turkeys). Tons of wildlife around. When I'm down at the camp I walk though the Adolph Thomae Jr. County Park and I've seen ocelots, bob cats and wild hogs early in the morning which worries me since I'm walking with my dog.
https://fws.gov/refuge/laguna_atascosa/wildlife_and_habitat/wildlife.html
The best wildlife are all the birds though!3
