October 2020 Monthly Running Challange

This morning I got in 14 km.Is it normal to feel like I'm running at altitude even after I pull the mask down? I feel like there's a delayed reaction to the mask blocking my face. Oh but wait, someone posted what they're calling a "real study" on Facebook that said masks while exercising don't affect oxygenation, CO2 levels, etc. So I must be making it up. Never mind.
Near the town where I always see weird stuff, some drunk guy tried to start a conversation with me about the "family gathering" that was apparently going on with him and the dogs that had come out from a neighboring property(?). I went to the side to give him space and kept going.
Him: "Oh, you're running, Ma'am." (The need to address strangers politely is strongly engrained in the Polish brain. He continues to use the polite formalities throughout the entire conversation.)
Me: "Yes, I'm running." While waving dismissively and continuing away from him.
Him: "Ok!" and starts running. I can't understand much of what he's saying because it isn't clear. Something about vodka, forgetting a phone to call his mom(?!), I don't know what else but I'm trying to remain calm and yet be ready to fight him off if he tries anything. I'm also impressed that he's still running, but I'm starting to worry, what if he's a drunk runner and is actually in shape to keep running?
Him: "I must admit, I'm a bit drunk."
Me: "I know. I can see that." I've also had enough and discretely pick up the pace a notch. That's all it took.
Him, a few paces later: "Aww, OK. Have a nice day!" Stops running.
Me: "Have a nice day!" and I pull down my mask and get. out. of. there.
Did I mention I had just listened to a podcast about safety while running? I guess it helps that I am regularly around alcoholics with work and am more accustomed to their behavior, not terrified like I used to be.
The rest of the run was uneventful, which is probably a good thing.
I know I said I wasn't going to make my 100-mile goal, but those pesky 6 kilometers were bugging me all day, and I was meeting a friend for a walk in the park, which happens to be about 5k from home... so I ran an extra park loop and then home. DONE. See you in the November thread!

Thank you @katharmonic – I’ve been enjoying getting my mileage back up
@quilteryoyo sorry to hear about your surgery being put off
@shanaber thanks for setting up the challenge – that’s great about the Peloton 60 day trial
@Faebert I agree with @Avidkeo I don’t think you should have to break in new shoes either
@AlphaHowls I have a feeling your idea of rest is running.
Great job @LoveyChar
Way to get to that 100 @RunsOnEspresso I was at a local running place today and I couldn’t remember what I need to get to 150. My legs were tired and I had already raced around for 2 miles chasing my daughter’s friends at their XC Conference Championships right before my run so at 4 I said if it’s more I’ll go out at home tonight. Happy to see I didn’t need to go back out ha ha
Yay I'll be working from home for a week or two woohoo I can sleep until 5 or 5:30 now!!

Haven't been here in forever! Said I wouldn't pay to run a 5k but I did and I loved it and I got 2nd place in my age category 30:20:04 (9:46 minute miles)! I'm so proud of what these short, little legs did for me today! Surprise surprise! Happy Halloween, everyone!
Great job. You may find those age group podiums are addictive.3 -

@AlphaHowls hasn't taken a rest day since the last Ice Age...
No, I distinctly remember a 'rest day' right after the glaciers melted. I think that was the day I turned my toe nail black running from woolly mammoths or a sloth...
Now I remember!!!! Right after the Mammoth Marathon!!!6 -
@AlphaHowls You definitely deserve to take the afternoon off and not go for the next level of miles LOL3
-
Yay for coming back and hitting your goal @RunsOnEspresso!! Great job!
@Faebert - I agree with @Avidkeo that new shoes shouldn't need to be broken in. Depending on where they hurt I would try different lacing patterns and/or socks if yours are too thick or too thin with those shoes.
@AlphaHowls 😂 outrunning sloths and woolly mammoths! You are amazing on your streak and distances even if the .02 to get to 492 is too much!
@polskagirl01 So scary with the drunk. Most of the ones I have come across couldn't run without falling down but I am sure he couldn't have kept up with you for very long even at a slower pace. He may be sore later when he sobers up too. I think the mask makes it really hard to breathe normally no matter what they say about the oxygenation and CO2 levels. I have not been able to run with one. Fortunately as long as I stay far away from people I am not required to wear one when I run outside.
I went out for an easy run today and my legs were not happy, just so, so tired. I thin the unplanned interval runs, while fun, were just too much. As I was turning for home my hamstring (outer part of the back of my thigh?) and my glute started to complain, a lot. So I walked the majority of that last mile. I did make goal though and a little bit more. This also completes the Fit Witch Challenge for me and I wore the shirt on my run today.

Great job everyone who met their goals, were oh so close, and those who did their best.
@polskagirl01 Glad the drunk was harmless and couldn't keep up with you.
@LoveyChar Yeah for the age group placement! That's a fantastic pace.
Has anyone heard from @Camaramandy648 lately? Seems like it's been a while since she has commented.

Feeling a lot better, thanks everyone! I was nervous running hard after the other day but it seemed to be okay. Lupus is weird, you never know what’s coming.
Ran the Jolly Jack o’lantern Virtual 5k. At the moment I’m leading my AG with a 28:11 which is the fastest 5k I’ve run in a while! And Strava was calling long, we ran our usual 5k course and it didn’t call until about a tenth after the usual location. Based on the segments which are more consistent I ran an 8:04 first mile! We slowed down quite a bit after that but it felt good to go hard, haven’t run that close to 8 minutes in more than a year! Apart from my dragon hat trying to fly off once, the costume worked well.
Husband dressed as Captain America. Our usual parade of Saturday morning bicyclists went by during our first mile. Normally they really annoy me since they don’t stay on their own side of the road and they pass too close, but it was kind of nice to have them all yelling out “nice costumes!”
The medals for this series are all masks - there’s a turkey for Thanksgiving and a Santa for Christmas.11 -
I ran the Trek or Treat 5k yesterday, which is the first in-person race I’ve seen here in awhile. They asked everyone to wear masks until the race started, and everyone stood a good distance apart while awaiting the awards ceremony.
My fastest 5k before yesterday had been 27:31, and my recent goal has been to improve on that time (I need a break from long-distance training). I felt really good during the run and realized as I was about a mile into it that I could pick up the pace some and still feel good. I ended up running each mile faster than the previous (!), and my race time ended up being 26:54! However, Garmin and Strava showed that the course was a little long, and my fastest 5k distance within it was 25:36. So, I got PRs on both a race and on actual 5k distance. Really proud of myself. Now I just need to keep working at it so that maybe I can place in my age group next time.
I was short of my goal since I didn’t run for a couple of days due to my migraine, but hopefully I can do better in November.13 -

I'm in for 80 miles this month. Hope all-a-y'all are doing well.
Well, I made only 76 miles this month. I developed a little bit of extensor tendonitis and had to take some time off.
Actually, that was a pretty productive week. I learned 1) how to tell the difference between different types of foot pain, 2) what listening to the body really means as far as taking time off, and 3) how to lace my shoes so they would not be so tight! So much new knowledge, lol.
I also learned that, even though the Higdon plan is a good one, it is, at the end of the day, a cookie cutter plan and I really do have to check in with my body after every run to see if I need to tweak the given plan, or not, to meet my own needs.
7 -
Congrats to all of you on your PRs... however you measure them. :-)0
-
@durhammfp Sounds like you did have a very productive rest week. Until I started running, I had no idea that there were different ways to lace your shoes to make them fit better.0
-
Going to be quick here because October's over and I got behind.
Congrats on your 4k PR @marisap2010, that's fantastic! And @rheddmobile great job and awesome time for you too!
Thinking of you all going through personal and family health issues.

I ended the month with a bit of whimper or a sigh. A run got done, but that's about all there is to say about the running part. I did a fantastic hike though and I will update that in the November thread because probably not many are still looking here.
Total miles were well short of my goal and my lowest mileage month in well over a year. But onward and upward.
Congrats everyone who ran this month and great job to those who are recovering and taking it slowly.4 -
October was 140 of 100 miles. Not always a daily poster.4
