Just announced today that indoor dining and gyms (among other activities) are being shut down in Minnesota.
I'm not doing either, so it's not going to change things for me. It's just discouraging to see us going so far in the wrong direction in terms of number of cases.9 -
Chef_Barbell wrote: »So NYC just got switched to all remote as of tomorrow. I need a drink tonight a huge margarita. 🤦♀️😫 Also, gyms are in danger of closing as the governor might make the whole city an orange zone.
Our governor (MN) is announcing stricter measures tonight at 6:00 pm. No in restaurant dining, bars closing. Other measures as well including cessation of high school sports.2 -
In regards to US Thanksgiving, today on the radio I heard a national security analyst say something along these lines:
Be thankful for healthy loved ones.
Be thankful there are vaccines around the corner.
Be thankful you will be able to get together with your loved ones next year.23 -
40% of the workers at the plant where I last worked in Iowa are out because they are sick or exposed. Some exposed people are still working, but not sure how they are determining this. Another co-worker (in Indiana) just cut a meeting (online) short to take his daughter to the ER for a severe Covid case. Several of my relatives in Nebraska had it and recovered. I'm really trying to not get infected myself, but it seems more and more difficult to avoid with every moment. If these vaccines take much longer, we may not need one because everyone will have gotten sick already.16

Given that we don't know for sure how long immunity will last, an vaccine could be helpful even if a big chunk of the population has already been infected once.12 -
cwolfman13 wrote: »cwolfman13 wrote: »I think my work just made a mistake. In order to strongly discourage employees from either traveling out of state or having visitors from out of state for Thanksgiving or Christmas, they are requiring 14 days of quarantine if you travel or have out of state visitors...that's actually nothing new...the new wrinkle is that instead of teleworking for those 2 weeks as has been done previously, you are now required to use your annual leave and get written permission from on high to either travel or have someone out of state travel to you.
For the most part, from what I've heard around the water cooler and break room is that most people aren't planning on anything big...but so and so's kid will be visiting from Texas or so and so's husband's mom will be visiting from Arizona, etc...but by and large people don't seem to be planning large get togethers.
The punitive nature of this new mandate is already causing problems, and it's only Monday afternoon. I'm in management and I'm already getting things like, "my husband doesn't care if I have permission or not, he told me that he's not your employee and his mom will be visiting from Texas for Christmas." We also have a lot of employees with grown children who live out of state and while not planning a big tadoo for the holidays, they will be visiting back home. One of those people is our primary IT guy and he's basically said, "fine...I'll use my annual leave, but don't bother calling, because my phone and email will be off if I'm on a forced vacation." Another employee is upset because his sister lives in state, but works in southern Colorado so she commutes out of state daily and as such is considered to be an "out of state" visitor.
The bigger issue I think is that you're going to basically have a lot of people just lying about it and saying they aren't traveling or hosting out of state visitors when they really are and thus avoiding any quarantine period whatsoever, when in the past they would have complied with the quarantine period and just teleworked. On the other side, you're going to have people comply...and fully comply in that since they are on annual leave, they will not be available and responding to emails or phone calls.
We also have some new questions on our form that we fill out daily whether we are teleworking or coming to the office. Any yes answer on the form requires the employee to get a covid test and self quarantine for 14 days (can telework if their work can be done by that means)...the two added questions are do you have a runny nose or diarrhea? Fall allergies here are pretty common and just about everyone has a runny nose in the fall...that question alone just put about 70% of our workforce into quarantine starting today. I'm also hearing some chatter of people possibly using this as a work around for having to quarantine for 14 days using vacation time for having out of state visitors in that they see it as a responsible thing to quarantine...but instead of saying it's for visitors, they'll just say they have a runny nose so they can still work at home while responsibly quarantining.
I think the higher ups made a bigger mess of all of this than it already was...I'm hoping they might walk back some of it.
I am constantly shocked about how people/companies/government don't always foresee the potential unintended responses they trigger with their edicts.
Yeah...I talked with my boss yesterday about this as I have more interaction with the rank and file and told him that we went from having a pretty compliant workforce with overall positive morale to a defiant workforce with about zero morale overnight. We already had pretty strict requirements in place...but making people who can otherwise work at home in quarantine use their leave pissed everyone off.
I'd be interested to know what your boss's response was, because they don't always seem receptive to input from anybody.
My boss actually agrees with me, but this is coming from way above him. I work in the judiciary and the mandate came down from the state Supreme Court for all judicial employees. They're getting a lot of flack from every court in the state, but I doubt that will change anything.2 -
I'm not too sure about these vaccines, just doesn't seem like we can know the long term effects of it yet or if it will even give long term immunity. I guess we will see, but I'm iffy.
On the other hand oldest kid has been under quarantine due to exposure from stupid kids at school. Decided to make her get tested to be sure she's negative before having Thanksgiving with a family member with cancer - but with how long tests are taking in IN I'm not sure we will have them in time for Sunday sadly. Then when I get home from taking eldest to get her test, youngest is sniffling and coughing in the kitchen and when I look at him he looks ill. So now he's getting tested tomorrow even though I don't think he's actually left the house in over a month since he always goes to school online. And then of course if he's positive my husband will have to quarantine and my older 2 are now virtual learning anyway...and I'm not ready for all of us to be in the house at the same time for an extended period of time. I love them all but I don't love them that much lol (that was sarcasm....mostly, I do love them after all!).11 -
hello again from South Australia - we have gone from almost pre Covid normal a week ago to super hard lock down.
Community transmission cluster - first community transmission in SA for months - is now 23.
Apparently started from a cleaner in a quarantine hotel who also had a second job in a pizza place
6 days circuit breaker (their official announcement words) - to aid in emergency tracing as well as stop spread.
for next 6 days: nobody may leave their house unless for essential reasons.
Defined as shopping for food and essential supplies: 1 person per household per day. Working in essential services. For neccesary medical or dental care. Thats it. No other reasons.
All elective surgery cancelled. No weddings or funerals.
All gyms. cafes, restarants, pubs, churches, shops closed - Except supermarkets, chemist, banks, post offices, bottle shops(!)
all sports and even excercise outside your home: banned
Mask wearing required for all persons outside their home
Fortunately for my husband and myself, we work in essential services so we won't be going stir crazy at home.
(Our dog will though)
We will see how this goes in practice - I am in a regional town, well away from the outbreak in Adelaide (our capital city)
I dont work weekends so will have plenty of time to give detailed update on Saturday15 -
The unthinkable has happened here. Soccer has been canceled. Well, not all of it, just my 2nd son’s crazy competitive team canceled the end of the season bc two players have family members with Covid and a third pulled out after that. I’m surprised we lasted this long, with our county leaving its previous “bad day” # of 400 in the dust, now bouncing wildly between mid 200s to upper 600s per day (835 yesterday!).
It’s starting to feel like Covid is circling and moving ever closer. Good friends got it, now soccer folks, and a boy in one of our kid’s scout dens. Half of our local priests are quarantined after one tested positive after a diocesan meeting.
Before the last week or two, it felt a bit at arms length, but now, as they say, “this *kitten* is getting real” here.
And yet...we had to tell friends we weren’t ok with attending a 40 person party. And there’s still plans for indoor soccer season and camps, and I know other indoor sports are still continuing.14 -

It will be interesting to see how this goes. I do understand given what happened with Victoria that the idea to go hard early might work better than waiting to see. I really hope the "6 day circuit breaker" works like they hope... stay safe eh 🙂6 -
Well, son of a biscuit, dh just got a call back from his dr. and he tested positive. I think he was as surprised as I was. I'm hoping and praying the viral load he received during exposure was very little. So far, he's had a low grade fever 2 days, and a cough that hasn't been too bad. He started with symptoms last Tuesday night so keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't progress into anything worse.
So now I'm waiting for a call from my dr. so I can schedule a test.
I think the worse news that dh got was he cannot return to work until after the 25th and he has to have 3 days of being symptom free. He's going completely nutso being home and being with me.
Yes. That's apparently one downside of the virus for some people. Having to spend too much time together. Can't say I really understand it myself, but everyone's different I suppose.
You can only understand it from your own personal perspective. For instance, we were told to stay away from each other and always wear a mask within 6'. Sounds simple enough right? Unfortunately, 1. we have a small house 969 sq.' so not a lot of options of places to hide. 2. we have 1 bathroom 3. we both have to use the same kitchen, bathroom, living room, etc. 4. considering all the places our hands touch it's unbelievable how often I'm wiping down, cleaning, etc. throughout the day. and 5. my spouse coughs everywhere while wearing his mask around his chin, he's constantly touching his face, nose and washes his hands *maybe* 2x a day. So yeh, even though I've told him, even his kids have told him and he should know better, he still either is clueless or too lazy to do all that he should. First a.m. he got up with a fever and was coughing, I watched as he coughed all over the kitchen counter. It's in his personal hygiene make-up; maybe it was his upbringing being 1 of 8 kids and the parents both worked so never had the time to teach properly. IDK.
You see why *I* have a personally hard time being with him 24/7?? I can only obsess and do so much cleaning up after him, I've given up reminding him because then *I'm* a nag, and hoping for the best but my own personal situation brings out the resentment in me.
Just a vent for the day.
Is there anywhere else you can go and stay for a little while so you don't get it from him if he's positive?2 -
I just listened to the first This Week in Virology podcast since the Pfizer news. They didn't really have much to say, because all that was released was the press release, not much data. They classified it as good news, but they are hopeful more actual data will be released soon.
One thing they discussed that I've heard before but didn't really catch is that there are two types of vaccines - protective and sterilizing. With a protective vaccine, the person still gets infected and is still shedding virus, but is protected from getting sick. With a sterilizing vaccine, the person does not get infected and cannot spread the virus, it just passes thru their system. They said we don't know yet whether any of these vaccines are protective or sterilizing, and obviously that will affect how many people need to get vaccinated to reach herd immunity.
They also stressed that based on contact tracing worldwide, the 4 highest risk places to go are bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and gyms. They think that people assume they are low risk because they are allowed to be open, but you still need to critically assess risk based on measures being taken at each individual place and when in doubt it's prob best to avoid.17 -

The Pfizer vaccine development was not a part of Operation Warp Speed.

What was the point of the Operation Warp Speed comment? In July, Pfizer did accept $1.95 Billion for 100 million doses of vaccine. Whatever you want to call it, Pfizer did accept government financial support for the vaccine.

So just broke the news to my family that I will not be joining them for Thanksgiving. I may go over later in the day to have dessert outside if the weather will allow it, but otherwise I am staying home. I just don't think it is safe to have that many people in a single house all near each other. And sadly, I can't trust that everyone will have been taking precautions in their every day life. So now I will be alone on Thanksgiving.
Awesome reading about somebody with common sense ! I know that it will be hard for you and your family but you are saving lives, and having consideration for the medical professionals dealing with this pandemic. Kudos and good luck to you.14 -
Our governor (MN) just announced new restrictions going into effect Friday.
Youth and adult sports halted ( college & pro are still going with spectator limits)
Bars closed
Restaurants closed except take out
Gyms closed
No get togethers in private homes except for people living there (don’t know how this is going to be enforced, Thanksgiving next week)
Wedding and funeral restrictions for amount of people allowed, same for church services.
Salons and retail stores still open with covid precautions still in place.
These will be in effect until December 185 -

In Italy we've been doing this for about a month. The curve is just starting to go down a bit. They're telling us that we're doing this to save Christmas. Ha, ha!!11 -

Yikes! I think I would be walking around with a can of disinfectant spray and just spraying everything... light switches, cupboard handles, sink handles, doorknobs, etc.
I’d move out! 😉3 -
Just found out this AM that my cousin, originally from Minnesota, but now in SD, has it along with entire family. He and his daughter are doing better but his wife isn't well at all. No testing for any of them.14

They got no advanced money. Just money after they perform. It was an advanced purchase agreement (contingent upon performance, just making the risk less, but no funds up front). Moderna did receive money in advance from Operation Warp Speed. Not that it matters to me. I think vaccines are the only front that the Feds did a decent job.7 -
See How Coronavirus Restrictions Compare to Case Counts in Every State https://nyti.ms/32WOqgCCoronavirus cases are rising in almost every U.S. state. But the surge is worst now in places where leaders neglected to keep up forceful virus containment efforts or failed to implement basic measures like mask mandates in the first place, according to a New York Times analysis of data from the University of Oxford.
Also, water is wet...🤷♂️6
