The only inlaws I have that weren't being complete doofuses about COVID are the first in the family we know to have contracted the disease. The kids' Cool Uncle has the Rona. He works from home right now, but his wife, accountant at a funeral home that refused to let her work from home, was exposed to another employee who tested positive. Sis-in-law was the only one who got tested. They had quarantined her from work due to the exposure but over the weekend she started coughing. She tested Monday. Then Cool Uncle got sick. Sick enough for him to call in working from home; knowing him he had to feel like utter trash to do that. So they both have it (PCR test came back positive for her) and both are very overweight. Cool Uncle has familial high BP and sleep apnea as well. I am hoping they recover alright without hiccup. He's 39; she's 31 or something. They live an hour away, and we told them we'd drive there to drop off groceries, or Turkey Day eats if they couldn't get the fixins, or still feel too poorly to make anything. I'm just hoping Cool Uncle doesn't end up hospitalized with his breathing issues and BP.
So there's that. Meanwhile The Other Brother and his wife are busy living it up and getting the West Coast Rona in Vegas. They are also people who really don't need to be infected, obese and not the healthiest. I can't even with people right now...
This is a lesson to the folks who wonder why they should bother trying to make the effort to make sure they don't spread a silent virus like this. You affect other people even if you don't personally get sick. The people at that office (where I don't think they are taking all that much care with protecting their employees based on what sis-in-law had to say) did unsafe things in a pandemic, got infected, and spread it to a careful person, who spread it to her hubby who works at home. This is how prisons and nursing homes get infected. This is how people hurt those who are susceptible or old that are stuck staying at home. Eventually, due to the magnitude of community spread here and the amount of folks and businesses flouting the guidelines, despite being super careful ourselves to protect my Dad, we're probably going to be infected by an asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic person at a grocery store or who served us takeout, or most likely from Dad who insists on going to shop inside Walmart every week (sometimes twice a week), in addition to Krogering. DAD!!!
It's the most unlikely way to get it, but I did have a kid who despite not leaving the house for a month, caught some virus off a grocery item or takeout and was sick for almost 2 weeks (wasn't COVID. She was tested).Heavy enough viral loads will spread. But that's par for the weird-situation-magnets that we tend to be. 
Anyway, unfortunately, this is also a lesson many just don't care to learn.
Hubby and I are just waiting for hubby's mom or dad to get infected and very ill and/or spread it to one of the elderly aunts/uncles they visit regularly who it will probably kill. Or give it to the youngest sister-in-law who is currently pregnant. We are preparing for stressful and sad times ahead.

Being positive though, my kids, despite being mostly trapped in their own home, are smart, sassy, and though sometimes extraordinary annoying to me and each other, are doing very well. I'm very proud of them. Especially my antsy teens.24 -
My parents insist on going inside the grocery store every week; last week they saw stockers without masks. I finally talked them into accepting and using P100 masks (the ones with the big pink filters).
I'm known to be the most overcautious in the family and I hoped I was wrong about how this would play out.11 -
So just broke the news to my family that I will not be joining them for Thanksgiving. I may go over later in the day to have dessert outside if the weather will allow it, but otherwise I am staying home. I just don't think it is safe to have that many people in a single house all near each other. And sadly, I can't trust that everyone will have been taking precautions in their every day life. So now I will be alone on Thanksgiving.

Thank you. I am hurting a bit because of the idea of spending the holiday alone. I have never been in that situation before and it makes me sad. But I am not willing to risk my health for it. I know it is the right decision logically, but it is not an emotionally easy decision.24 -

Empathy: I think probably quite a few of us are in this spot. I'm pretty solo through life these days (widowed, parents deceased, only child, no kids . . .) but have long spent holidays with my sister-in-law's family, as they kindly "kept me" after husband died. I'm not going this year. This will be my first holiday completely alone, too. SIL and BIL are in their 80s, doing great for their age, but clearly having health declines more rapidly over the past year. I don't know whether there'll be a next year to see them.
My local "Elder Orphans" group (yeah, that's a thing) is doing a Zoom in the early afternoon on Thanksgiving, for a little social connection around our solo Thanksgiving dinners. Clearly not the same, but every little bit of connection helps, these days.30 -
In NM we are currently at 95% capacity for critical care. We are a pretty poor state and our health care infrastructure is dead last in the nation in terms of beds per capita. In the meantime, we have one of our state representatives from the south putting out disinformation showing hospitalizations down from the same time this year and plenty of beds available...problem is that he's lumping in all hospitals and all beds as if they are equal in care. We only have 5 hospitals in the state with critical care capabilities...it's not like we can start sending critical care patients to the Lovelace Woman's Hospital. He's even including NICU beds in his count. It's pretty disgusting and is driving a bunch of conspiracy theories that the governor and DOH are in on some big hoax to scare everyone.
We even have ICU nurses and doctors doing PSAs telling people that this isn't a joke and that they're full and they are overstretched in terms of manpower...it's heartbreaking to watch an ICU nurse in tears on the news while this jerk goes around spreading disinformation.23 -

Few masks (and we have a mandate here) no distancing, everyone shoulder to shoulder and aggressive Karens everywhere knocking people aside to get to the frozen dinner rolls. If this is what it’s like the Thursday before, I’m scared what it will be the day before.

This story is an eye opener. In Miami, half the people that ended up having Covid-19 were being admitted for other reasons, not Covid-19. That's how prevalent it is out there right now. If you go to the grocery or to a restaurant, assume the person next to you has it at this point.
I, at first, read that wrong, thank goodness. I originally thought they meant 50% of the people coming in for things other than Covid-19 were testing positive. No, just that half the positive cases were coming in for something else unrelated. I think 10%, in general, in that county are testing positive currently.
That's part of the reason, though I believe this will get incredibly ugly this Winter and early Spring, we will nearly be at a messy herd immunity before vaccines are widely distributed and taken.

I'd prefer to starve or eat what is in the house. Shop after it's over. It's not worth it honestly. It's just food and as long as you have enough to eat then all fine even if it's ramen or something eh? Life is more important.12 -

For some people, the idea of the holidays (mostly commercialized at this point) is burned into their brains as an essential part of their identity. They think they can't live without it. And it must meet expectations or it's ruined. FOMO is a fate worse than death or disability I guess...10 -
I finished my thanksgiving grocery shopping today. Anything purchased from this point forward will be delivery or pickup. That gives me a week of quarantining before T-day, which is the guideline if you are interacting with young, healthy individuals (we are the risk to our children, not the other way around).
Will be zooming with my parents who are in their 80's and cooking and delivering their eats the night before or T-day morning (they have terrible fridge space despite my complaining).
T-day will be our 33 year old DS, 29 year old DD and SIL, and grandson. Not offering appetizers and with only 6 of us, we will have plenty of space for a social distanced dinner.
Tried signing up for a COVID test for Tues or Wed of next week at one of the rare Stop The Spread locations that take appointments. Nope, no luck. Yesterday, the news stated that on of the drive up locations have to close down at noon because the line was 5 hours long at that time.
Back to my sewing more masks.......9 -

The person that disagrees apparently prefers death to them and their loved ones than to not have a turkey dinner for one year lol. Ok, hope you do well then.How is a dinner so important? Some people...dumb.16 -
You will see your family again if you do what is needed to be done and then the vaccines will come so wait it out. I haven't seen my family for longer than most people. I still ring all the time. I can give virtual hugs and kisses. I still know we all love each other. One day soon we'll hug again for real. Anyway I hope everyone stays safe that is all. Don't do stupid things and keep it spreading.21

We are doing Thanksgiving with just us. Thankfully we are a large family of 7 and I will only be missing my Dad and that side of family this year.
The stores here are well stocked and people are socially distant as they limit the amount of people inside.
My husband's parents who have underlying conditions insist on visiting other family across town for Thanksgiving. I just can't with them. 🤦♀️13 -
I bought all the stuff to cook for Thanksgiving last week. They had good deals on everything. Worked out well because they phoned me last night that I'm positive for Covid and now have to isolate until the 28th.
I have been missing helping my sister with her dh who has Alzheimers and is confined to bed. Looks like it'll be awhile longer. 38 -
My heart goes out to all who will be alone this year, to all who are hurting or sick. It's an unbelievable year in so many ways.
If we could all hang tough until the vaccine is available, things will get better.15 -

What are people doing to boost their immune systems?
Here's some things listed as boosters
1. Don't smoke

5. Maintain a healthy weight.
6. I also believe Wim Hof breathing can boost your immune system
Everybody can do these things to help protect themselves.

We're done except for the turkey. My husband's buying it now. He sent me a picture.... absolutely no toilet paper or paper towels today. We are near Winston Salem, NC.6

Not familiar with the Wim Hof breathing method, but in full agreement with all the others.
Sample of one. My BIL's mom is 93, super lady that has celebrated all family occasions with us for 25+ years. She worked in a shoe factory, as a relator and at age 65 started a job with the state and retired at age 90. She kept working because she loved to be around the people. She has followed items 1-5 above.
Earlier this week she had an issue with edema and went to the ER. Blood tests showed a low red blood cell count. They determined she had internal bleeding and sepsis. Took her into surgery last night and got out about 9PM. They found cancer that caused a bowel rupture and ended up removing part of her intestines to take care of the cancer.
This morning she was awake, alert and trying to talk, although she was still on a ventilator.
She's still not out of the woods, but, I fully feel she would not have survived the surgery if she had not followed items 1-5 above.
