Dr. Fauci was interviewed last night on, The News Hour, on PBS. This question came up. He said the vaccine will respond to the mutated forms of the virus. He said that it’s possible, that the mutated form in the UK may already be here, and that they will be checking the tests to see whether it is here already.
We have the new COVID here in Rome. A woman on a flight from England who was tested before leaving (negative result) has it. She and her SO are isolated. Everyone on the plane was tested (a few days have passed) and there are a few with the new mutant which I believe will be called "Spike" by the media. It is 60% more contagious than the COVID that we've got now. Ha! Merry Christmas! ---that's sarcastic.17 -

I'd bet a paycheck the new variant is already in the US. We've been so far behind in this from the beginning...
Waaaaay back in this thread, I mentioned that I was in disbelief that people couldn't give up one year of holidays and boy did I get flack for that. I'm glad to see that either those people left the thread, or that the tone has changed. I too, have a big family. I haven't hugged my aging parents since March. But it won't be me who lets this virus into their lives (or their entire retirement community).
I feel awful for those who are alone. For those who were expecting to finally have kids and grandkids all together this year. For people who find this a difficult time of year without Covid. Some of your situations on this thread literally bring tears to my eyes. But in the US, we just haven't done what it takes yet. Unless and until we do, we won't get it under control. Our individualist mentality won't beat this.
Hugs to everyone who is disappointed, stressed, struggling, downright sad or mad... I think we're all ready for a big, long hug.23 -

Just curious, did you get stopped at any border or during your travels? Glad you made it safely and WTH is up with not wearing masks in TN? Don't people realize it takes a unified effort?
Hindering interstate commerce is a no no in the USA in a legal sense so we traveled on interstates and saw no boarder policing. States are again issuing speeding tickets even in TN it seems.
We had our company Christmas party this morning and one from FL said masks were not in vogue in FL either. In TN I was told many think you can not die before your time to die so covid is not a factor that matters to one's longevity.
I am NOT joking about my last point. I live 3 miles from TN but having an earned OD degree from TN I know this mindset is false but as a child was taught I was under divine protection from all harm. Harmful belief systems seems to have grown in this Pandemic.9 -
The new variant is also known to have been found in Australia, Denmark and the Netherlands and it was first discovered in September, so unfortunately it's likely it's already in many countries.

Without getting too political, I think it probably has more to do with the fact that we are in a transitional period leadership wise. The outgoing President is in what is often referred to as the "lame duck" period and the incoming President doesn't take office until January 20...so while he is the President Elect, he doesn't have any actual power yet.
Basically, not much of anything is happening or getting done right now, which is most often the case when you have a transition of power in the US.14 -

I see others have already covered the Dr. Fauci, September, and lame duck administration aspects of the answer to this question so I will add something new. I couldn't find how many flights from the UK land in New York, but I imagine it is a high percentage. Here's what the Governor of NY is doing (although as Snowflake said, you can get on a plane with a negative test yet still be positive.)

COVID has officially hit our house. My oldest started a sore throat yesterday, very slight change in temp. Really, very few symptoms pointing to COVID. I took him to Urgent Care for the swollen, sore throat assuming strep. They swabbed him for strep, flu and COVID. When the lady came back in in full garb asking more questions about being around anyone sick I think I stopped breathing. Positive for both strep and COVID. Crap. The only cough he has is minimal and I thought it was because of the swollen uvula - more of a clearing of the throat. No issues with taste/smell, stomach, headache, or body aches... only a hint of a fever (hit 100 once, mainly hovering at or just below 99). Taking my daughter in in the morning for a strep test. They said no one else in the house needs to be tested for COVID, sounds like WV assumes symptoms that crop up soon after are COVID, unlike my friends experience in NC (her quarantine started after her husband’s was done, even though she got sick very soon after with very tell tale symptoms... since she didn’t get tested, they said they couldn’t know for sure so it was 2 more weeks for her). They also recently changed to a 10 day quarantine instead of 14. Hubby was already on vacation for the next 10 days - guess we’ll get to just hang out! Have some household thing to work on, and I have some important/special quilts that I need to finish. He left work a couple hours early today - I texted him to pack up as soon as she told me.
No idea when or how he got it. We were out more this weekend than we usually are, as we’re many others since it was the weekend before Christmas.22 -

Much to our disliking.

Has had sadness a plenty,

This damned 2020.

The holiday season,
But why be merry?
Is there even one reason?
To decorate the house
And put up the tree,
Who will see it,
No one but me.
But outside our window
The snow gently falls,
And we think to ourselves,

I miss my parents too. I moved states decades to help husbands career. I was very close to my mum especially. When I left I rang her every day. People get over it. We can still ring or Skype etc now. You do NOT need to be with them and make the pandemic worse this Christmas. I read people saying " oh I haven't seen them for a year". Well gosh be an adult, we don't get all we want all the time. Maybe next year if enough people get the vax you can do what you like. I haven't seen mine in a few years but we talk.
I will say something that is hard to say to the person on here that has a child now with Covid and potentially infecting the whole family. You knew how it is in USA with COVID and shopping or doing stuff is more important than you or your family being healthy or alive? Christmas is more important? I don't understand it. I am very sad for you all and totally wish you all well. Why not buy stuff online or nothing at all if it's too busy? Life is more important than Christmas.17 -
It's odd that PA has numbers that are so high. We've had a mask mandate almost since the beginning. There was a total shut down for months. Indoor dining in restaurants is closed as are gyms. Schools are mostly virtual. And yet . . .
A lot of people do resist the restrictions. Masks are worn badly, and some don't wear them at all. It seems that the tighter the restrictions, the more people rebel. Still, the number of infections is ridiculously high. The news never explains what is happening. In the beginning it was the warehouse jobs and food processing plants. Now, who knows?4 -
AZ should not be that high. Just a governor that refuses to follow common sense and set an example. In every one of his meetings, he doesn't wear a mask. Everyone around him does. Sickening and just arrogance.
I still feel relatively safe because we are vigilant. I won't eat inside a restaurant and certainly won't go to a gym. 5% of the people in my county currently have it. 100,000 residents with 5K cases.9
