Rest day for me. And today that means REST! my biggest lesson of 2020 was rest is vital. Give yourself a rest day. Unless you are @AlphaHowls she's incredible. I feel a little pulling in the calf when walking up steep hills but it settles quick. Good news I think, no pain. So far I'm achieving My December goal of staying injury free!9

Yay great news @eleanorhawkins re the negative test! And your write up of the 22km run and channelling of Pastor V made me feel a bit emotional. Hope you are enjoying a well earned rest - great way to celebrate leaving isolation.
@quilteryoyo - beautiful scenery. And jealous of the sun down in NZ @Avidkeo and @ContraryMaryMary.
I managed a 5k on the treadmill on Christmas morning but have now come down with some kind of bug. Feeling rough. I don’t have any of the main symptoms of covid but it’s so rampant in London right now. Have booked a test for the morning.
About 12 miles to go to goal. Hoping i can make it, even if only on treadmill at home.
Hope you all had a lovely Christmas xx

I've been taking it really easy for a few days, but was feeling really good today and set out with no plan... started by running my kid to her friend's house (she rode her bike, and we took the shortcut through the woods). Then I kept running, making up the route as I went, and it somehow ended up being just over half marathon distance. Felt good. I used up all of the remaining daylight, and it actually got a bit too dark for running in the woods at the end. Then we went back to the friend's house and the other kid wanted to ride the bike back instead of putting it in the car, so I got a couple more km. It was actually pretty awesome running in the dark in the woods with a flashlight... but now I'm at 39.1 km for the week. That's too close to 40 for me to not go out tomorrow, so I'll probably do my "Morning Mile" route around the block and be done.
December Goal

@Faebert I hope your test goes well and you get a negative result. Also that you'll feel better soon!2

@eleanorhawkins Yeah for a distance PR and for doing it, in part, in memory of my dad. That's so sweet.
@Scott6255 Glad you had a good run and that both of your children got to come in for Christmas. Family time is the best.
@Avidkeo Yeah for staying injury free. I agree that rest days are important, especially for those of us who are more mature.
Oh no @Faebert ! I hope you get a negative test and feel better soon!
Nice run @polskagirl01 !
Not having the best day. If you want details, see below. If not, that's okay too.Missing my dad and still in disbelief that he isn't here. Then, I started to heat something up in the microwave tonight and it just made some really weird noise and didn't heat anything, except my blood. It's only 3 years old and is part of a built in microwave/oven combination. I had to replace the last one because the microwave broke. The oven was fine. I keep a filing cabinet of important papers in my closet. When I went in to find the papers on the microwave/oven I saw that one of the rods that holds my clothes has broken, so I have clothes in a tangle all over the closet floor. Dad's favorite cat, Socks, has hurt himself - may have a broken leg. We will need to take him to the vet on Monday. My house phone is acting up and I had to deal with the customer service people - who are nice, but the protocol they have to follow drives me crazy. I need to help mom get some stuff taken care of before my surgery, which is in only 13 days! I don't think I can do it all. I did see my brother today, while I was at my mom's, and he told her that she needs to not just depend on me to do things for her, that he will and will have to when I have my surgery. So, at least his words are on the right track. Actions will need to follow those words. We shall see. Anyway, I am feeling completely overwhelmed and sad.14 -
Sorry. Duplicate post for some reason. It's been that kind of day.0

I am late but Merry Christmas to all who celebrate!
I am 50+ posts behind so going to catch up and comment on a few posts. I am sure there are many great runs that I won't be able to comment on but know I think you are awesome getting out there and running, some of you in terrible (cold!) weather!
@shorkster - Congratulations on 9 months sober and doing so well with your running! You got this!
@SummerSkier - Welcome to our group of crazies! Saw your post in the Run the Year group and will comment more on that below.
@rheddmobile - Congratulations on the sub-hour 10k and PB for your hubby! Seems like you have been hitting a few of those goal times and PBs recently.
@Tramboman - looks like you hit some of your 2020 goals and 2 of those you 'failed' at were pretty much impossible this year. So I would rank you at 3 out of 4!
@eleanorhawkins - YAY for Negative and Freedom!!
@quilteryoyo - I just love those pictures and keep going back to look at them! Gorgeous! Glad you had some good quiet time with your mom. I am sure it was good for both of you.
@Avidkeo - Sunscreen! Always!
@katharmonic - the ice skating rink and tree are so pretty! Where are you located again? I am the opposite of @quilteryoyo too, I can roller-skate but not ice skate. I did a lot of roller skating as a kid (had the fancy boot skates and covers and all) but my mom really wanted to teach me to ice skate and it was always a disaster.
@Faebert - I hope you feel better and that it isn't Covid!
@quilteryoyo - if it were me I would just leave the clothes on the floor and deal with them later, use it as an opportunity to go through them or something. The other issues needing to be addressed, I would make a list and prioritize and hit each one by one. Maybe it won't feel so overwhelming that way. Also are there things that you can ask your brother to take care of since he is offering to help? Maybe things that could help you but aren't critically important since it sounds like he hasn't been terribly dependable in the past.
This week between Christmas and New Year's is a great opportunity to revisit your goals for 2020 as @Tramboman has and see how you have done, reflect on what you could have improved on and what was out of your control this crazy year. Also start thinking about your goals for the coming year so you can post them in the January thread along with your goals for the month.
Along those lines, I have signed up for Run the Year 2021 (link to registration and all the options) again, If anyone is interested I will set up a Run the Year 2021 group like we had for 2020 and we can assign teams with up to 5 people per team. I will not be able to run 2021 miles but am confident I will be able to run 2021KMs and would love to run as part of a team. I will also be tracking my walks so maybe that will help me get closer to 2021 miles 😁

While some of you are having snow and freezing rain, it has been hot (nearly 80F) in So CA this last week. It is supposed to be cooling off finally this next week and we may actually get some rain! What is strange to me is it seems that so many of us are having such horrible winds. We have had what we call Santa Ana winds that were cold first and then the last round were hot again. They were so bad it sounded like our roof was going to get ripped off and it is tile so that is pretty impossible. It was also bad enough that it was difficult to even walk out on the trail near the river.
I have not been trying to run (ok maybe a little) this last week to hopefully give my hamstring a real rest. I keep thinking it is better, then I run and it slowly gets bad again so I am guessing it is not healing completely. I am still trying to get out most days for some sort of focused walk, some faster than others but not running. So far the hamstring has been pretty happy so I figure to keep this up until after the 1st and see how it does then. I know I should probably go see a sports doc, but honestly with the virus issues here as bad as they are I realistically will not go until things improve. If that means I continue to walk so be it. I really was hoping to be back to my 100 mile months again and it is hard not to be there!

Logging 3 runs today. I've been reading along and Liking/hugging. It's always busy around Christmas with general holiday stuff.
I may make my monthly goal. It will be close. Either way this is the most miles I have ever run in a month. I was supposed to run on Christmas Eve but just didn't get around to it. The family went for a walk but I just didn't feel like running. It did make my run today feel great! An extra rest day is always nice.
My goals for this year were never firmly written anywhere, but they were to PR my 10k (done!) and to get my 10k under an hour (done!). I'm not running a HM until January 1, so my goal of PR for that distance will have to wait for 2021. I had some climbing goals but those got majorly upended by COVID lockdowns. My climbing fitness is back to where it was pre-shutdown, so I'm just moving those goals to 2021. A little goal sabatical.6 -
@HonuNui - The volcano picture is amazing! Love that you can see the conjunction too! It is tiny but so bright.
Your dinner looks yummy, especially the Charlotte Royale!
@martaindale - love that you had a little goal sabbatical! Perfect term for it!
My goals for this year were:
Run more consistently, increasing from 4 to 5 days/week - I may never be able to do this, I just need the rest days too much.
Run only the 3-4 miles recommended with an occasional longer run✅ (maybe more than the occasional longer run)
One HITT run per week✅ (before my current injury I was doing this)
Participate in regular (1 or 2 x per week) fitness classes at the gym (pilates, zumba, yoga)✅ Covid stay at home helped with this. I attended virtual classes from home
Continue strength training on my own if necessary✅ Not sure why I said if necessary but it ended up being necessary with our gyms closed
Where I said I wanted to be in a year:
Healthy and uninjured
Running a faster mile
Running more continuous miles
I made none of these... I was making progress but had too many setbacks with the pacemaker surgery and not being able to run well for months prior and a while after and then hurting my hamstring.

@quilteryoyo - I’m so sorry. Sometimes the little things can feel so huge when you are dealing with a loss. Echoing others but please be kind to yourself. If something can be left until later or passed to someone else to help you, do that. I really hope your brother does step up for you. Not only because of your surgery, but because it’s right for him to share the burden and help your mum as much as he can. Sending you big hugs - wish I could help. Hang in there. X3
-
@quilteryoyo feeling for you, those days when everything that can go wrong does suck at the best of times, let alone now.
Remember it's ok to grieve, and to allow yourself to rage, and whatever else you feel and need to do. Press your brother to keep his word, too!
@Avidkeo yeah, we know the uk strain has reached Madrid and most of the population of Madrid is currently spread all over the country visiting family for xmas. So lockdown is bound to be imminent.
@shanaber I signed up for Run The Year ages ago and would love to team up, this year I'm going to end up about 20 miles short of 1,000 miles of running so that will be my goal for next year.
I dont't remember if I set any goals back in January, will have to look and see if I wrote anything anywhere.5 -
@quilteryoyo sounds like one of those days. Do what you can, I like the idea of making a list, but mostly give yourself some grace to leave stuff that isn't urgent. It may not be a bad thing if you don't do some things for mom, as maybe that will allow brother to step up.
I can report that the @Tramboman fueling method is working very well for me. Heading out for a quick mile here soon.
Update: just got back fom my frosty "Morning Mile". I did it as a time trial, because hey, it's just a mile 😆. Running as fast as you can for a mile is actually not easy. However, I did get a PB for this route, about a minute slower than my actual mile PB on the track.
December Goal
"40 weeks of 40K" - 8 Weeks DONE! / 44 weeks left to complete the challenge8 -
@shanaber Thanks. I really don't feel like I can just leave the clothes in the floor for 8 weeks..if I don't deal with it now, that is how long it will be. Well, maybe not quite, but I know I won't be able to for the first 3 - 4 weeks after surgery. My winter coats are in that pile too. I do make lists. Have them everywhere. I do need to consolidate and prioritize AND see what my brother can do. I'll start that today, but will have to add some to it after we talk to a lawyer tomorrow about probate. I'd like to get some of that going next week. Not sure how much of it my brother can help with. I try to give him the benefit of the doubt since he is still working night shift and watches his granddaughter several days a week. So, he doesn't have a lot of time to do things. But, he may just have to figure it out. We're lucky to live in a great rural neighborhood where everyone helps each other. Mom isn't having to worry at all about her cows getting fed or getting wood on the porch for the stoves. Everyone wants to do something to help. There are just some things that family HAS to do.
@shanaber I'm sorry that you hamstring is still giving you issues. You are doing great to listen to your body and give it a rest. Hopefully another week will do the trick and you'll be back to running 100 miles/month in January.
You did great on your goals for the year.
@HonuNui Love the picture of the volcano and conjunction. The food looks delicious too.
Thanks everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and suggestions. You all are the best.3 -

Partly sunny, mid teens F and no new snow. Still, don't think the footing would support an outdoor run, especially with the trusty treadmill available. It's growing on me to the point I don't hate it anymore.
@quilteryoyo I know it's difficult bordering on the impossible. Just be patient and take baby steps.
@HonuNui Wonderful pictures!!

Normally, I participate in the Brenda Miller Christmas run which is held annually on Christmas morning in memory of a fellow runner who died from lung cancer. Everyone brings their change that they have found on the streets and in parking lots throughout the year and canned goods which are donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Because Christmas Day was so icy and cold, the run was rescheduled for yesterday afternoon. The temps were much better. I think it was 30F when we started at 2:00 pm. Unfortunately, the sidewalks were still icy in patches and since it was the afternoon there was too much traffic to run in the streets. I managed to get in 6 miles before I decided to call it good. Now I need to get out the door for today’s run – I came here for inspiration and ya’ll didn’t fail me!
Way to go @eleanorhawkins! I knew you had it in you!
Glad your kids were able to come home for Christmas @Scott6255. I know that made you and mama happy!
Beautiful photos @quilteryoyo. Biggest of hugs to you @quilteryoyo. You are right you can’t do it all. It helps me when I’m feeling overwhelmed to write everything down. I guess it stops my mind from racing her to there constantly. (ETA – I see you’re already doing this. Hope it helps you too.)
Praying for negative results @Faebert and that you feel better quickly.
What a lovely town to run in @katharmonic.
Sounds like a lovely run through the woods @polskagirl01
.
I hope giving your hamstring a good long rest will heal it @shanaber. I don’t blame you for not going to the doctor. I’m supposed to have a dental appointment this week and I’m seriously thinking about canceling. It was originally scheduled for last week but they closed the office due to a worker having IT.
@HonuNui – Love both pictures but the volcano and conjunction is just breathtaking!
Well done on those goals @martaindale!
@shanaber – considering what 2020 brought to all of us and the fact that you recovered from having a pacemaker put in, I would say you have done fabulous!
@Tramboman - You always offer good insight and advice! Keep it coming!
