January 2021 Monthly Running Challenge

No run today. I did a session on the stationery bike followed by strength. I'm feeling really good atm, just in the groove. I'm determined to make this groove last at least a month, given I usually fall off after 2 weeks.4

Remember that feeling @Avidkeo, for times when you don't want to continue. You are doing great!2

@TheMrWobbly
I have signed up and am on the Hamakua coast of Big Island of Hawaii
Just saw this. I have put in my data for Jan 1 through Jan 6. (I'm trying to do RED January this month...) Oh, and I am in Durham, NC, USA.
I could not figure out how to enter fractional minutes so I did some rounding.
Cheers!

Also, on Challenge Hound, what does "miles behind pace" refer to? Pace for the entire group to finish the challenge?0

Yes, I believe that's what it means. the whole group is a little behind pace on a miles per day basis (I just looked and it says 76 miles behind). But I have no worries at all that we will achieve the goal! It's early days. Plus I bet there is a surge over the weekend.

I did drag myself out to do speedwork with the group. This is the first week of the marathon/HM group training, which hasn't been going on separately since suspended last March. This group is an extra fee above our normal gym/run club membership so I don't normally go or pay for it over the winter. And I probably won't this time either but the opening night was free to everyone so I went. The workout was a ladder of 1-2-3-4-4-3-2-1 minute intervals with 90 sec recovery between for the first half (way up) and 60 sec recovery on the way down. Then there was an optional 5 minute interval at the end for marathon training. I wasn't going to do it, but the alternative was to just walk or jog during that time, and I ended up probably somewhere in between hard effort and jogging, and picked up the pace a bit as I went along. Might as well, I guess.
After that I did four 100 meter sprints and then we did a cooldown. It took forever and it was a long night of alternating feeling too cold and too hot. This is one reason I don't like winter speedwork!7 -
January Goal: 90 Miles
1/1: 6.26 miles
1/3: 9.02 miles
1/5: 5.03 miles
1/6: 5.05 miles
25.36/90 miles completed for January
I ran 5 miles this morning. It was chillier than I thought it would be. My weather app said it was 54°F feels like 52°, but it was windy and seemed colder. I wore shorts and a t-shirt and at the last minute I decided on gloves and sleeves. I was really glad. The first half of the run was into the wind and they definitely helped. Once I turned and headed back home it wasn't as cool so it was nice to be able to take them off. A long sleeve shirt would have been too much and I was dressed well except I should have covered my ears. They were a bit cold, but it was a pretty morning. The sky was clear and there were lots of stars. And I really enjoyed my run.
2021 Races: I need to sign up for some races! 😁5 -
I’m in. Starting out slow as this is my first time and just getting back into the workout routine. I’ll shoot for 40 miles if that’s okay.8

Welcome @smdrew6814
Good to have you in the challenge @durhammfp
I am right there with you @katharmonic and I have run to work the the prior two days. This morning was -5c (23F) when I stepped out so I stepped straight back in and picked up the car keys. I have an hour run scheduled for today so we will have to see how much it warms up by the afternoon. TBF when I think about @skippygirlsmom dragging herself back up that bank I am just being a wuss aren't I?7 -
I know we are an apolitical group, I wanted to let our American members know im thinking of you all today.
Be kinda boring when there isn't this political drama eh? Though boring looks good right now.
this might sound really bad, but its the first time in months that the news hasn't been wall to wall covid, which was refreshing 🙈🙈3 -

I absolutely understand what you mean. Doesn't sound bad at all. Sounds human.0 -
I got in a short 1.5 mile run last night. I am hoping to get back on track now that I am no longer on call. I’m dealing with an audit now, but that is something I pretty much leave it work so I can run in the evenings. I am looking forward to a nice, long run this weekend.

we went out for 2 miles, it was supposed to be 4 but coach said getting out is more important. it wasn't too bad. my legs were not thrilled. i've lost so much speed. i was never fast to begin with but i used to be able to do 2 miles in the ten min range. if i lost it in under a year, does that mean i can get it back in a year? sigh. speed demon had fun.
and it was very nice that there was still sunlight when we ran after work

Welcome @smdrew6814 ! There is no upper or lower limit on mileage you challenge yourself to do. We are here to help keep you accountable, answer question, make you smile, listen to your rants, etc. This group is great for all levels of fitness!

Another 5 miles on the treadmill this morning. Sorry haven't commented much lately, just busy at work and not feeling very chatty lately. Big hugs to all those going through injury and other daily challenges. I feel for you and with you.

Cloudy, low 30s F, with a nasty wind from the north that occasionally switched around so it could blow in my face.
Saw bunches of Canada geese; a few squirrels, and heard snow geese flying south. Also heard a robin (not uncommon) and a flicker (very uncommon for this time of the year).
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)7 -

Treadmill run this morning - just 5 min before and the rest after my strength training session.
The track we ran on last night for speedwork is like fine gravel/cinder and a little rough and uneven. I'm finding my ankles and knees a little sore today from that.7 -
Lovely running pals, I need your ideas.
In the run up to Christmas I did a 7 in 7 running challenge, and now this one is being advertised:
https://www.phoenixrunning.co.uk/events/virtual-p7in7-spring
Christmas week I did the Fibonacci pattern which I really loved and it was challenging without actually killing me.
For some background, a normal running week is around 25 miles, running 4 x a week, something like 4,6,4,10-14 miles. Fibonacci was 1,1,2,3,5,8,13.1
I was wondering at trying 3,5,7,9,7,5,3 though that might actually kill me, so I thought i'd see if anyone else had any good ideas?
Also, if anyone else wants to sign up it'd be great to have some virtual running partners? The races are expensive but the medals are AMAZING!5 -

ha ha @TheMrWobbly too funny, I would have been happy to lay there and let someone else pick me up, but I think we all would have gone over the edge at that point ha ha thanks for making me laugh today

@quilteryoyo Hope your procedure goes well tomorrow and you have a quick recovery.
Please don't forget to keep us posted.3 -

Thanks @TheMrWobbly ...I remember all your encouragement when I was trying to finish C25K. Seems like ages ago but it was just fall of 2019. Crazy.
I just figured out how to port my Strava data automagically to the challenge website. Whew. That's a time saver. :-)

@thisvickyruns that's an interesting challenge with a lot of options. I think the increase/decrease mileage pattern would be good. For me that would be a tough week at the mileage you listed, but it is supposed to be a challenge I guess! If you think it's too much, what if you backed it down just a mile? 2-4-6-8-6-4-2 seems more doable to me and that 2 would sure feel good at the end. Or if you rearranged yours to 3-5-7-3-5-7-9 or 5-7-9-3-5-7-3 so you didn't have 7-9-7 facing you right in the middle. Depends how numerically satisfying you find those sequences though
I think I had friends do something like a 5k-4 mile - 5mile -10k-15k-13.1-26.2 week as a challenge, based on local race distances. But that's crazy. You could add in a shorter distance - maybe even a 1 mile- and lop off the marathon.
@quilteryoyo thinking of you and holding you in our hearts tomorrow!

I had a bit of a late start today. The forecast was for rain which I was very much looking forward to as opposed to the 100% sticky humid weather we've had lately. I woke up to no rain so I waited a bit, but then it started getting too late so I had to just get out there. The closest it got to rain was a misty sort of precip.
@mbaker566 I'm right there with you on the loss of speed! Looking back at my data from this time last year is a bit depressing. I got a new watch a few months ago and didn't transfer any of my old records over to it, so I get "new record" alerts as I build back up this time.
@quilteryoyo Sending good thoughts for your operation tomorrow x

It was another cold 5 miles for me this morning. It was a nice enough run, but 38°F feels like 30°F is colder than I like. I'm tired of winter and ready to start complaining about the heat. 😁 But seriously, it is so much easier to just throw on shorts and a tank top.
@quilteryoyo I'm praying for you tomorrow. ❤

*So, my New Years resolution is to hike all 193 (or 195 depending on your source) countries of the world this year. This could be difficult, since I don’t have a passport. But YouTube to the rescue! I have been using the site to take train “trips” recently, and have found them strangely motivating. Why not the world?

Great job on all of the running! I've liked and hugged where appropriate. It's late and I have to get up in 2.5 hours.
Thank you everyone for all of the thoughts and prayers. I really wanted to write something grand as my last post before my operation, but, like I said, it's late, I'm tired, and my brain isn't working very good. I just want you all to know how much you mean to me. We have laughed, cried, shared, ranted, ran, challenged each other, supported each other where ever we are in life, etc. I consider you all my dear friends. Keep up the good work. I'll "see" you in a few days. Love you all!18
