Better sleep last night (second dose of antihistamines administered as soon as she woke sneezing at 12:30am), so woke feeling ready to tackle my scheduled 90 min run.
I did the same route as yesterday but tacked on 2km on the flat along the beach as a warm up - which meant I was a lot faster up the first hill - and the same 2km at the end as a cool down. I was a bit short, but five minutes out of 90 is barely anything so I didn’t bother with the last kilometre and I really needed breakfast as I was starving.
My coach is a big fan of running fasted to train your body to better use your reserves (less gels/food needed during races means no slowing down to eat and faster results) however, my sister is serving up some pretty small dinners (90 percent salad greens - looks huge, very few calories). This actually suits me and my plan to shed the Christmas kilo, but I needed to eat more to fuel my running properly. It’s not fun starting a run hungry!11 -

I ran 5 miles this morning. It started out kind of rough. I just couldn't get going this morning and it was almost 5:30 before I even got out the door. Then it seemed like every little thing was annoying me. It was colder than I thought and no matter which direction I was going I was running into the wind. But I did eventually settle into the run and it turned out to be a decent run. I'm not sure about tomorrow. It is supposed to rain. I am just hoping that it doesn't start raining until after 6:15 and hopefully I will get up and going better tomorrow.

@quilteryoyo Dad sounds more or less ok but he seems to forget things and get confused every now and again, and he is complaining he feels very tired, but I imagine all the travelling back and forth to the hospital 5 days a week is contributing to that. He's worried about the chemo as they seem to have basically warned him he's going to feel *kitten*.
They've closed our municipal boundaries again due to increasing rates of you know what. That means I can't go down towards the beach to run. Our neighbourhood's name translates literally to 'the lagoons'. No lagoons left now but all the little hills between them are still there, meaning basically if I want to run on the flat I either go to the river trail, which is all stone after the storms, or I run the same old loop I'm sick of. Half way through the first loop of that this morning I decided if life gives me a hill I might as well run hill repeats and the first hill lends very well to those. SO I went and did 4 repeats, running as hard as I could up the hill then walking back down. I know for people used to hills my little hill is pathetic and it only took me around 40 seconds to run up, but for someone who almost always runs on the flat it was hard work! My legs probably won't like me at all tomorrow. But what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?12 -

I haven't slept well this week though I know my reason which is work related, now over and we move on - think I might have one of those afternoon naps @ContraryMaryMary 😊
Now come on @noblsheep that wasn't much of rant - give it some, we are good for it!
On the other hand that looks like you did have fun @rheddmobile
OH MY WORD @Camaramandy648 I just had time to actually read the last few days. 100 MILES!!! Three words A MAZE ZING! You just rock it. I have no words 🙇
The RtW2021 Challenge is almost on track (only 9 miles behind) and places still available. We zoomed through London and down the Mall past the site we hope @thisvickyruns will be going past later this year
Waved at @Faebert (no cup of tea on offer though!) on the way through over the roundabout at Buck P and head of down the A23 toward Brighton. I love the spirit of Brighton where everyone is accepted as who they are unless you are a *kitten*. Brighton's latest magnificent glory is the BA360 This was recently described by a local comedian as (do not open if you are offended by sexual references)"Celebrating Brighton's free love community by making a giant c*ck ring go up and down a 531 ft phallus all day long"
We sprinted off along the South Downs so I just ran up the nearest peak I could to celebrate only to find I had left my phone on charge so here is someone else's picture
We are here for anyone who is struggling and wants to vent, if you don't want to go public then drop me a friend request. It is doubtful I can solve your problems but I can listen to you, from my IT days I am a good 'Rubber Duck'
We really don't.... we hope we aren't successful in the ballot is what we hope 😂😂
I didn't have time for a longer run today, and it was -17°C (warming up, should be back to "normal" tomorrow) and with all sorts of air quality warnings. I had errands to do within a mile from home, so just ran there for 2 km total and decided that was enough. It was snowing and very pretty.
Great running, everyone! I gave you "likes" and "hugs"
Its a bucket list kind of thing... cos at the end of the day its the London marathon... so if you're running marathons, is one to run. but there are so many thing about it that i don't like the idea of - its in London to start with, and i'm really not a fan. and the whole queuing for 2 hours to get to the start line sounds like a logistical nightmare of when you eat breakfast!!!
I have better odds of winning the lottery than getting in, but yes, you never know!!!5 -
@quilteryoyo So glad you are feeling well enough to get in your walks!
@eleanorhawkins Good job on the hills! I would get tired of running the same loop too. Hope you are able to visit your dad sometime this year.
I had about 10 minutes before my body pump class last night, so I hopped on the treadmill for 1.2 miles. Slept poorly last night, so I am hoping some extra coffee can push me through the day!4 -
@ContraryMaryMary Nice running. I understand the running fasted idea, but not sure that would be for me. Besides, being on the slower side, I really don't care if I have to slow down a bit for a little nutrition during a run. I guess that is a perk of being old and slow. LOL It sounds like you are doing great though!
@kgirlhart We all have those days, but sounds like you managed it well. I hope the rain holds/held off for you this morning.
@eleanorhawkins Glad your dad is relatively ok. Radiation makes you really tired on top of the traveling, so that doesn't surprise me. I hope the chemo isn't too bad. Do you know what he is taking? When my husband had brain cancer they had him take a pill which didn't affect him as bad as traditional chemo. I'm sure they have something new by now. The problem with brain cancer is finding something/a pathway to cross the blood-brain barrier which protects the brain from foreign substances. I hope he does well with it. Way to go with the hill repeats! Don't you feel so much stronger each time you reach the top?! You've got this. Hope the lockdown doesn't last too long.
@marisap2010 Nice quick run before your class. That's a great pace.4 -

I don't think he knows the exact details on the drug/drugs involved yet, or he hasn't told me about that yet. When we spoke on the phone the other night he said that they've told him he will be getting 6 cycles spread out over the year, and that they gave him a list of foods he won't be allowed to eat. He did try to explain that part but it didn't make all that much sense, I think the gist was that there are certain foods that contain something that would either interact badly or stop the drugs working or something like that.
I felt stronger after the hill repeats... until I went to do today's yoga video and saw the title 'Strength'. Oh *kitten*! Yes, there were squats hiding in there, and push-ups which I already did yesterday. So not only do my legs hate me now, but my arms do too lololol.
I have to agree with the perks of being old and slow! I think very little now of slowing down, stopping to take photos, nipping home to use the bathroom...6 -
Breaking in one of my Christmas presents today12 -
@eleanorhawkins At least you are a "good" sore and know that you are getting stronger from it. You're body will thank you later - not today, but later. LOL My dad liked to tell a story about me getting hurt when I was little. I can't recall what had happened, but he asked me if I was okay and, supposedly I said, "I don't know. It hasn't stopped hurting yet." LOL Somehow, I feel that may explain what you are feeling pretty well today.
Nice shoes @TheMrWobbly ! Love the color.6 -

It was 29F with a real feel of 19F this morning when I headed out for my run. I could hear the wind blowing and considered waiting until lunch or after work to run but I lifted a few weights to get warmed up and headed out around 6:45 am and got it done.
@martaindale – I love your approach to hiking the 90 mile trail so that your little one can join you!
Loving your progress @quilteryoyo! I just know I will be seeing you again at a race soon!
@ContraryMaryMary – Interesting that your coach recommends running fasted. Is that for all distances? I’ve seen some research that indicates running fasted is not optimal for women due to messing with their hormonal balance. What are his thoughts on that? I always run fasted for my weekday runs which are usually around 5 miles but for my longer runs, I eat a little something before heading out.
Snazzy shoes @TheMrWobbly!
Sending big hugs to all who need/want them! Hang in there people! Sometimes you don't have to beat adversity. You just have to outlast it!

@kgirlhart Days like that are rough. It's good you were able to settle into your run. I have had days where my pre-run grumpiness never wore off and it just made the run hard and I was still grumpy when I got home.
@ContraryMaryMary Re: fasted running. Seriously do not know how you do that! I can do around 3 miles fasted first thing in the morning, but even that distance starts feeling like I'm dragging in the last bit. I think some people just do not function well fasted. It's such a miserable feeling that I just can't do it to myself purposefully. Besides, I have no designs on going to the Olympics or setting world records. These days I even have a little snack before my short 3 milers before work. I would rather just feel good and be content with the baby steps of improvement in my pace.
@TheMrWobbly Love the color! I like a bright shoe. Men's shoes usually have more interesting colors. I get so happy when I can find a shoe that is bright and colorful that isn't pink or purple.
@eleanorhawkins I'm with you on the hills. I never run hills as it's so flat here. One of these days I'm going to end up in a hilly race and I'm not going to know what to do with them!

It would have been a wonderful day for the RtW20201 Challenge through the Sussex and Kent countryside, a little stretch along Camber Sands however Storm Christoph is making it a bit of a slog! Even if you did want to run along the beaches we are in lockdown and might get a fine so low profile everyone. We have left the shores of Blighty, I hope you have your sea legs as it is rough out there in the Channel!

Hill repeats this morning. It was a nice cool morning 12°C with very little wind which made running those short but steep hills easier than last week when it was 20°C with 100% humidity!
@TheMrWobbly Love the new shoes!
RE: running fasted. I do all my runs fasted , up until I get to those runs that are >25km then I usually have an English muffin with jam or vegemite (unless I'm running in the evening then obviously I've eaten during the day). I just can't eat much before I run, it makes me feel nauseous. I only use gels during my runs that are over HM distance too. But like @ContraryMaryMary if my dinner the night before has been light then I definitely notice it on my run the next morning.5 -
@TheMrWobbly I see we made it across the Channel and are back in France I keep meaning to go through my photos to pull out pictures of my travels as we pass through each place to post them here, but I haven't quite managed to get around to it. How much easier do we have it these days with digital photos stored on our devices!3

Re: fasted running. I never used to be able to and 90 minutes is about my limit. However, it is something that can be learned. My coach recommends taking a muesli bar in your pocket if you’re worried you’ll run out of steam en route.
I haven’t hear about it mucking either women’s hormones and haven’t noticed any adverse effects. I do find, by running before eating I eat less - otherwise I have a second breakfast after my run.
Certainly, if I’m not running first thing, I’ll eat breakfast first. So, as it turns out, I usually only run fasted in the weekends and holidays.6 -
I walked another 2 miles today - laps on my driveway. I have my follow up appointment in the morning. Will let you know what he says.13
-
Nice work on another 2 mile walk today @quilteryoyo. I hope you get a good report card at your follow up tomorrow! It certainly sounds like you are doing well.
I almost never run fasted. I'm not really interested in experimenting to see if I could adapt, but I feel like I get light headed if I don't eat before running or working out.
All you people doing hill repeats are making me feel guilty. I skipped speedwork this week and I think hills were on the menu. @eleanorhawkins my run coach always picks hills that take about 30 seconds to run up as the workout. And then repeats the running up and jogging down for a set time like 20 minutes to 40 minutes, depending where we are in the cycle of training.

Snowy day here. I debated going to run group in the morning but really needed to get work done. I brought both outdoor and indoor running clothes to work with me so I could decide to run outside or stop at the gym before heading home. But I ended up working later than expected so chose option C, which was to go home and then take Stella out for a run in the dark with our lights on. She was pretty good and fairly on-task for most of it. She didn't get a walk at all yesterday so she had some energy to burn. Because it was dark and snowing I stayed in my neighborhood and looped around, but when I tried to pass my house to add a little bit more at like 1.94 miles Stella was not having it. She refused to go past the driveway so I put her in the house and did the rest on my own.6 -
January Goal: Hike/Run the "A's" *
1/1: 3.39 Afghanistan, Albania
1/2: 2.41 Algeria, Andorra
1/3: 2.05 Angola
1/4 off
1/5 3.25 Antigua (and Barbados)
1/6 gobsmacked by events
1/7 4.02 Argentina
1/8 2.11 Armenia
1/9 post covid vaccine: tired and achy
1/10 4.05 Australia
1/11 3.75 Austria and Azerbaijan
1/12 2.00 Bahrain and Bangladesh
1/13 off
1/14 snorkel
1/15 4.10 Barbados
1/16 off
1/17 4.60 Bermuda, Belarus and Belgium
1/18 off
1/19 3.25 Belize, Benin
1/20 2.10-no "traveling" today
Total: 41.08
*So, my 2021 resolution is to hike/run all 193 (or 195 depending on your source) countries of the world this year. This could be difficult, since I don’t have a passport. But YouTube to the rescue! I have been using the site to take train “trips” recently, and have found them strangely motivating. Why not the world?
