Instead of making my morning beer run, I took a walk through the snow. I've got one tallboy and not much time to go out and get more if I wanted them (I don't) because we're going on vacation today. I've decided not to drink and while there's certainly booze where we're going, we don't bring alcohol into my mom's house (she has a drinking problem) and I won't feel weird if I turn down someone for a beer.
I haven't decided for sure, but I may leave my weed at home too. I've done it before and didn't really miss it. I'm hoping to keep my days filled with sledding and other outdoor activities so I'm not bored and dying for a buzz.
Hopefully a break from my daily drinking will set a foundation for February and beyond.13 -
@HerNameIsMischief I like your idea to trade in drinking time for physical activities. Maybe try a nice hot chocolate to warm you up after playing in the snow. I found some dark hot chocolate powder that I dearly love--in fact, I think I will have one now! Enjoy your vacation and your dear mom.9

Another AF day come and gone My gloomy mood is improving and my cravings are less often. It's becoming less of a "restriction" and more of a normal evening routine.

@HerNameIsMischief I like your idea to trade in drinking time for physical activities. Maybe try a nice hot chocolate to warm you up after playing in the snow. I found some dark hot chocolate powder that I dearly love--in fact, I think I will have one now! Enjoy your vacation and your dear mom.
A LOT of my drinking comes from boredom. If I have stuff to do, I forget about getting buzzed. I just hope I'm not jittery for the 500-mile car trip up there.7 -
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has posted on this thread.
I've found useful information, inspiration, sound advice and even a couple of posts that shocked me.
I have had a pitiful 3 AF days this month when I intended (even woke up intending) most of them to be. However, 3 is 3 more than than most months in 2020.
One of those was last night and it felt good waking up.
Todays micro-goals:
1) Don't grab a beer or glass of wine as soon as I get home from work tonight. (Even if my wife is having one )
2) Don't pop a beer or pour a glass of wine while I cook our dinner.
3) Don't pour a glass of wine as we eat dinner.
4) Don't pour several fingers of Whisky as we watch TV tonight. (Even if everyone in the shows is drinking )
If I do one of these I know myself well enough to know I'll do the next in the list.
If I can resist those 4 things I'll be on 4 days tomorrow and I can forget about it until I get back from work
I've been drinking daily for way too long and you've all shown me I can change that.

Jan: 8 AF days/25 days. No drinks Sunday but Monday I had 3 glasses of wine. Then I ran out of weight watchers points. At least this is working as another roadblock to stop me. On Saturday I report into a human coach on Zoom who will ask me how I did and how much weight I lost. This is like going to confession but the fact that I have to divulge the truth is making me work harder on sticking to my goals.
On my AF days though, I can manage but by day 2 midday, my nerves are on FIRE and my wine devil is having a hissy fit. I've been hitting the passionflower tea, double-bagged, and 2-3 cups to help stay even-keeled.
@HerNameIsMischief I get what you're saying about boredom. I am still working on filling in all those hours in the day with something distracting. Which reminds me, it's about time I sink my teeth into another home-related project. I LOVE home improvement, just need more dollars9 -
I woke up this morning feeling dog gone good. AF last night, and the weird thing was I did not miss my whiskey...this made it 13 AF days this month and I really want to hit my (now new) goal of 20 AF for January.
This thread with all of you with similar stories has helped me so so much. @MissMay the resources you have been so thoughtful to post at the beginning of this thread are terrific.
Everytime I read all the posts here I see part of me in every single one. It is such a weight off my shoulders to finally know I am not the only one feeling/experiencing these thoughts, emotions, struggles and accomplishments.
I feel like you all have saved my life

That's really quite impressive. I can do #1 and #2 now, but I struggle with #3. I may steal your goal idea if you don't mind and focus on that one for February.
It all starts with a plan and announcing it. Also for me, super helpful to have a replacement standing by (ie: alternative drink, snack, distraction, etc) for times when the brain senses it's being "deprived" of something and starts to act up.6 -
Today I was AF for the first time in at least a year. Soda water and jolly ranchers saved the day. My DH (who barely has 1 beer a month) asked why I was popping the candy, lol. I said it is better than downing wine all night.
I am not setting a number goal for myself. If I start looking ahead, it gets too overwhelming. I will be AF today.
So now I need to get more soda water!12 -
AF day 6 here. Almost a whole week. Husband and I dumped out everything last night and have plans to give away the good wine to a few people.
This is hard. Can't say I'm thrilled with this process, but I know it's what needs to happen.7 -
HEY GANG look what I found. The very first introduction to the less alcohol forum. It was started by this woman that only wanted to do it for one month. Pretty cool to see how far back it originated.

Hi fellow MFPers,
Thought to start this challenge today through end November because I really need it and sounds like some of you might, too.
I am not trying to quit alcohol but just trying to limit my intake during the week especially while allowing myself to enjoy some wine on the weekends. I need to be accountable to exert some control over my 'crutch' ... pretty sure it will help with my weight loss goal along the way.
I will try to post each day and invite you to do the same.
Will start this challenge today and run it until end Nov. I hope some of you will join.

@CryingBlue you said a mouthful....It is hard. No lying there. Taking it day by day, instead in a big hunk is easier. As long as you can feel some progress so far that is what counts.6

@Tesha231 have you ever substituted the cocoa with carob? Takes a little getting used to, but it turns out to be another nice hot beverage besides coffe, tea ,etc.4 -

I am Dawn, I live in SE BC
I will post with my usual diary style to keep track of my AF days.
Keeping to my usual goal of 16-20 AF days per month, which is manageable for me and doesn't put too much pressure on me.
Sunday Jan 24 - AF, and again for Monday planning AF
Monday Jan 25 - AF - Very busy work week
