@CMB44512 great story as to how you just took the bull by the horns and DID IT.
You being comfortable enough around your friend and he comfortable enough around you NOT to make a huge deal out of not having any beer that night was my favorite part of that post ( besides your personal victory)
👍👍👍

Yes! This! So happy to hear it wasn’t the big deal you expected, and you could just go on with your night!!! Sweet indeed.6 -
@MissMay , I played such terrible tennis yesterday in my match, it’s not even funny. We got crushed. As for paddle tennis, I think I’m going to drop out of the league, I’m getting tennis elbow. The paddles for paddle/platform tennis are much heavier than a regular tennis racquet. No sense making it worse for a version of the sport I’m not that passionate about.4
-
@womona.....admitting here I have never played any form of tennis. I love watching it and can only imagine the great workout it must be. Oh and those darling outfits( hahaha)
My knees would never survive, not even if I were younger. I admire you still out there popping around on a court and playing. Watch out for that elbow. Oh and sorry paddle NOT table tennis, I got that mixed up.5 -
If I have a drink tonight, I will be 10/31days AF. A huge improvement from previous months. Also, since my vacation earlier this month, I’ve dropped down to just one drink when I do choose to do so- with very very rare exceptions. So that’s also good!
You know that expression used by problem drinkers “1000 is not enough, and 1 is too many”? Well, I can stop at 1, but having 0 is tougher for me. I need to explore why. My parents were not drinkers, so I’m not sure where this is coming from.9 -
This is so true.
I was thinking about this earlier in the week. I've been all enthusiastic have AF days but I know that if I want to make the change I want to then it really has to become a long term habit long after the excitement drifts away.
Persistence beats enthusiasm every time.5 -
Happy End of January from -17 real feel (may be up to -10) Rockwood Maine! So much for embracing the outdoors. This Texas girl has her limits.
3 sips wine / 31 days. I'll take it! Last year it would have been more like 15 bottles.
Breakthrough. DH bought 4 bottles of bubbly when cabin shopping yesterday. Must have been feeling somewhat guilty for raining on my parade last weekend. However, I really didn't even want any yesterday. (Who AM I?) Now had he said, Let's have a glass! I probably would have. But feel so free that it just wasn't a thing I was dwelling on. For those who don't know me, this has been a long journey.
If you're considering therapy to help drink less or just be your best and happiest, many therapists are doing remote therapy, which means there are a lot more to choose from. Be choosey. Consider it similar to finding a mate. Go on some dates. If they're saying to love yourself (or buy yourself some flowers--as one said to me long ago when I was very depressed after college) and that's not helpful, say Thank you, but we aren't a fit.9 -
Mentally prepping to do 36 straight days AF, until the day of my medical tests. That means no drinks for Feb.
My Ultimate goal is to just only drink on special occasions like holidays and birthdays, instead of on a regular schedule.
Is it time to chase my BIG goal?
I think so but I want to do 36 straight days first to prove it to myself. I did a few long stretches last year and noticed after day 4, it was wonderful.
Can I do it?
If I don't doubt myself, yes of course. And I need to stick to a lower stress lifestyle and exercise daily to keep mentally strong. And a valentine's chocolate stash for emergencies. It's Russell Stover dark chocolate raspberry marshmallow season.11 -

I sillily (my first invented word for @mainelylisa ) imagine some day when some of us will be able to travel, get together and have a non-alcohol dance party.
The moves are going to be hilarious after all of our workout moves being ingrained into our bodies!
Heehee, through almost a year of Fitness Marshall I am right into the body rolls, booty popping, twerking and stuff : - ).
OMG! Yesterday, as I was shakin my goove thang, weights in hand, in my basement, which is now quite cleared out, I told DH, I might need a disco ball so when this *kitten* Covid *kitten* is conquered, I can throw a proper dance party with all my LA friends! (That's Less Alcohol--I don't think the Cali crowd would think my basement club meets their standards.) There's even a pole, ladies, if you've ever wanted to pole dance in a safe environment (well safe, except for the concrete floor...) Though the ultimate would be Bubba's, if it survives. I can hang a disco ball, but lighted dancefloors are outta bounds.7 -
19/31 days AF this month. I misssd my goal of dry January, but it's way better than my average of 5 AF days a month.
@globalhiker I'm going to be AF for an extended period but want to stay in the group. We can buddy up if you're willing, we can cheer each other on.
As a side note I lost 11 pounds this month 🙌 probably because cutting alcohol cut my daily calories in half.8 -
@CryingBlue 11 pounds!!!! You can totally stay in the group as far as I'm concerned. Drinking Less can mean not drinking for years, or not drinking for 24 hours--it's all individually based on what's improvement for any one person! Happy to be a support buddy, though I do plan to have a few drinks this month. My hard limits are no more than 2 drinks in one day and no more than 4 drinks per week. Though I'm concerned that even that much may make me want more. In which case I'll know that it's too much and adjust.9

Hello to everyone today
I was not AF last night and neither was DH but we both agreed this morning that was too much for us. We each had two pretty strong drinks.
Ah now on to the bitters. I bought a bottle of bitters yesterday and some plain sparkling water. First pass two drops of bitters in 8 oz of sparkling water....barely tasted anything. Added 10 drops of bitters, not much difference. Added a packet of 'true lime' hmmm tastier. Then added a full plastic spoon full. Awww much better. Downed three of them before I actually had a drink. Maybe the brand of bitters is mild? it was manufactured in Australia
I will continue to drink it though as I thought it tasted good.
@MissMay the bitters I purchased has a clove taste and a few other things I have not been able to identify yet and there is no specific ingredient list on the bottle. it really was not so bitter. I did also read up on the origins it is truly interesting

I gave in & drank last night. DH brought home 2 bottles of wine & of course we finished them. I really don't know why we opened that 2nd bottle.
It was nice to have wine again. That 1st glass was lovely. Had I been alone I think I could have put the vacuum sealer rubber cork in & called it a night. That 1st glass got me a bit tipsy so that should have been enough but somehow the thought of DH finishing the 2nd bottle by himself which I know he would have done bothered me. I suppose I have to learn to focus on myself.
Woke up feeling bloated & tired with a bit of a hangover headache.
Will not bring alcohol back into the house until at least next weekend. I'm proud of myself for proving I can cut way down. It should be easier to stick to the goal of weekend drinking only & keeping it to 1 bottle.
So all in all it will be 29 AF days out of the 31 day month. Pretty impressive for my 1st Dry January if I do say so myself especially considering that the last year has been 0-1AF days per month12 -
I'm still running a tally of ONE alcoholess day for this month.
I told my girlfriend last night as I had a couple brews, good news is I didnt die or have dt's the other night. I have had alcohol free days like when I was sick with the flu or had to drive an all nighter back home when my Dad had a bad car wreak once.
I feel like those were times that were unavoidable and out of my control and that is why I didn't drink. Now when I really porocess that in my head it sounds kind of stupid. Of course I could have drank if I really want of. Maybe slowly my inner non drinking thoughts(protein drink angel) were over riding my drinking thoughts (or booze devil).
Either way cant say what will happen in February as far as goals go, except I have stopped picking up nips. 40y/o is only a few years away. I want to start my family. I dont want to be a poor example to any kids I have. It isn't fair to them, like it wasn't fair for me when I was growing up.
Also like the comment from @Stockholm_Andy that it has to become a LONG TERM HABIT.
Videos and pole dancing?? You ladies are making me blush. 😋10 -
I am Dawn, I live in SE BC
I will post with my usual diary style to keep track of my AF days.
Keeping to my usual goal of 16-20 AF days per month, which is manageable for me and doesn't put too much pressure on me.
Saturday Jan 30 - Drinks. All that I did outdoorsy was shovel some slush off of my back walk and around my car so that if it freezes back up again that it won't be thick ice. The trails are really not nice with this thaw.
I remember when people used to put 2 drops of bitters in club soda if they had a sore tummy. I think that it has Quinine in it, so don't have too much more than 2 drops of it.
Rolling total 22AF days out of 30 days9 -
Drinking the world’s worst whiskey sour in the green bay airport. The plastic cup was a nice touch. It’s so weak I could guzzle it all in one gulp. First booze I’ve had in 24 hours. 90 minutes till flight.
The reduced booze intake and eating only when hungry has helped me lose 17 lbs in less than 3 weeks, which should give you an idea about how much I was putting away. At my height (few weeks ago), I was starting the day with a fifth of scotch and then 6 to 12 beers starting in late afternoon. And I wasn’t getting all that drunk.8 -
Your dog after your glass of wine.

oh forgot to add that after tonight being an AF night I will have 18 out of 31 days AF. I can't say I have done that for almost a year now (and that was only for a month and maybe 6 AF days) and before that I would say I was maybe AF 5 days out of 5 years??? or more, mostly likely 20 years or more.11

BRAVO to @trish1c really 29 days.....you inspire me to do "ALL AF February!
@CryingBlue is in.....who else is game?
February is the best month to do it if you are going to pick one, shortest in fact.....not a summer vacation time, not a major holiday. The more the merrier.....and stronger in number....
I like the Disco ball comment.....I am about to buy one off Amazon. I honestly miss the gym classes we had, with the dimmed lights, disco light effects, and sound system. Reminds me of my old disco roller-skating days.

Hi folks, I haven't been around that last few days because we went camping and there was zero cell connection. It is the first time we have been somewhere that had completely no connection at all, and it took us by surprise! Most of our camping trips there is a least a tiny bit of slow connection. Did plenty of hiking, some paddling, and cooking out at the campfire.
So my last check in on this thread and I am pretty pleased overall with how this month turned out.
Look forward to seeing you all in the February thread!

But it is not over, oh no.......this is only the first month of this year, there are another 11 more to follow. To help, incourage and inspire you.
Dry or not, goal setting or not. You showed up for accountability.
Awesome month everyone!

Home. Weighed myself on my own scale and it's the same...268, maybe even a touch less depending on how I stand. I've also lost about two inches from my belly (I measure at the roundest point) in the last couple of weeks. I was 275 on Monday.
Had a hour and 15 minutes before my flight, so I had the aforementioned whiskey sour, a Leinenkugel Honey Weiss, a Blue Moon, and a shot of Jack. Had no effect on me, but oddly enough, I wasn't really disappointed. And on my two flights, I didn't once think of getting booze once I got home.
Thankfully, I don't feel like drinking. I confess to taking a couple of tokes of weed, and after a week, it's more effective than when I was smoking every day. I really, really hope that I can keep my weed intake to a decent level...it's so much better when you wait at least a few days between "sessions." And I hope I can leave my drinking habit back in the Green Bay airport, somewhere between the Packers souvenir store and the Gravely lawnmower exhibit.9 -

Sunday Jan 31 - AF - 23 AF days sits very well with me. February will be a shorter month. See y'all there.
