WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the May 2021 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10831839/may-2021-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until June 1, 2021 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/21182-monthly-running-challenges
Bookmark the previous and past challenges: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10393468/current-past-challenges#latest
Find a small group of runners that encourage and offer food support:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10573619/runners-that-need-some-nutritional-accountability#latest
There you will find lots of good info, and it's a place where everyone can talk to each other for further motivation. It's also a place to find help when there is a problem with this thread.
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month, and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.com and create your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

I can't believe it is JUNE already!!
I am going to say 80 miles with a stretch goal of making the 100 mile club.7 -
Wow. June already.
May was a bit of a bust for me thanks to my ankle but normal service resumes from tomorrow!7 -
Hoping to stay healthy this month, so... 100-mile club for me!8
-
Hello all! I'm feeling ambitious (for me, anyway!) I'm setting a goal for 30 miles this month. I should also finish C25K.16
-
Fine. If you all are going to keep making threads, I'll just have to keep on running.
I guess I'm shooting for the 100 mile club since my estimates are putting me at around 105 for June.14 -
150 k again for me.9
-
Thank for setting this up @shanaber. I can't believe it's June already either. Where has this year gone?
Thanks to the stomach flu last month, I was no where near my running goal. Hopefully, the kids at daycare won't give me anything but hugs this month. Looking at my HM plan, I am going to set my goal for 70 miles running, 30 miles walking faster than 3.0 mph, and continuing my streak. I'm supposed to have company for a week, so this may be a difficult, but I'm going to try.11 -
200 miles (minimum), but *dew claws up* you know I am probably going to go over 400 miles.16
-
I'm in for 100 miles this month. Hopefully.12
-
I'm in again. June and July have typically been my worst months of the year but I am ahead of last year so far even with a few setbacks. May was goal of 200 and I ended up at 186 which was 30 miles more than last year. For June I am going to set my goal at 170 miles which will keep me to plan for Run the Year miles. It will be a little harder as we go back in to the office mid month again, but I don't think I could do any 2 per days in the heat anyway.14
-
Wow, June, ok. I have no idea. I'll say 100 miles as usual.
I'm going to try to take so time off from work before things ramp up for me in July again, and MAYBE I'll start going to HM/marathon training again on a regular basis as that starts up this next week. Plus I'm doing a HM race next Saturday to start off the month. Those things might push the mileage up a little. On the other hand, I've got hiking and travel plans that might bring those miles down. But then again, I'm in denial about this but I have a big Spartan race looming in mid July that I need to start preparing for. We shall see which factors win out! My guess is that some time off for hiking + some fear-based training = still about 100 miles.13 -
No clue as to my milage prediction b/c I'm running for time. Probably basing it off one of Garmin's beginner training plans. I guess I'm shooting for 14 active "running" days. Maybe 2 miles each? So 30 miles for the month?
I'm starting from zero. Or more accurately, I suppose I'm RE-starting from zero. I basically haven't run since 2012/2013 when the injuries piled up and I just flat-out stopped. I've attempted a few test runs which were not encouraging. I can barely complete 3x (5min/3min) Run/Walk intervals w/o going into HR Zone 5 territory, and this is while limping along at 12min/mi pace. When you're sedentary for nearly 10 yrs, things fall apart! Such a rude awakening to see all the fitness I've lost in the intervening years. I used to run daily 5k/10k with a 10mi LR on Sunday. Now, running 30 mins non-stop seems akin to flying to Mars... by flapping my arms! I guess we'll see starting tomorrow...12 -
@runsrunsruns - Don't worry about comparing to a 10 year younger and fitter self. Just run smart and keep it slow in the zone 2 to zone 3 territory at first and build your cardio and endurance back slowly to avoid injury. Following a plan like Garmin or C25K sounds like a great idea!
You'll only find support here, no judgement. It's perfectly fine to run/walk and there are no pace requirements here.9 -
Welcome @runsrunsruns! You don't have to set a mileage goal. Running for time is perfectly acceptable! Or as @avidkeo is doing aiming to complete a goal race. Your run, your goal!
I'm going to say 60 miles this month. Heading to the Grand Canyon on Sunday for a rim-to-rim hiking trip means no running for the week. As soon as I get back home, I have a work trip to Texas and I've heard running in that heat and humidity is only for the beasts among us!13 -
I think my mileage will be around 80. I'd like to get 100 but I'm following a plan man. And we are taking the dog camping, off-roading, and hiking for a few days so missing a week.8
-
Thanks @shanaber I’m in for 60 miles6
-
@WhatMeRunning and @Teresa502 Thanks for the encouragement & advice. I don't know why I'm so apprehensive? Even if I'm unable to cleanly run 30mi, I should be able to simply WALK 3x that distance over 30 days w/o fear of keeling over. I guess it's just a fear of commitment & accountability. Ha9
-
@Teresa502 I am so excited about your GC hike. I have never been there and hope you take lots of pictures. Where in Texas are you going. It is hot everywhere, but some places are more humid than others.3
-
@Teresa502 I didn't realize your Grand Canyon trip was so soon. I'm sure you are getting excited. Can't wait to hear all about it.
@runsrunsruns Welcome. I know it's hard, but, like others said, try to not compare your current self with your 10 year ago self. If you have to compare, compare yourself with your last year self that was doing nothing. C25K is a great place to start.4 -

You'll be fine. Listen to your body and enjoy the journey.6 -
First run of the month on the board and the first official day of winter - a lovely cool and clear one. It would have been perfect running conditions except I hit a strong headwind for the tempo portion of my run. Bad planning!I could have changed my route - this is suburbia after all and there’s no need to run around the harbour in a head wind but, I don’t know what you’re like, once I have a route in my head it’s almost impossible for me to change it.12
-
Hey everyone! My goal this month is 50kms. And I just ran my first 5k in 10 years today! 🥳18
-
@runsrunsruns
Welcome!
I really like your username.
@pabmacAnd I just ran my first 5k in 10 years today!7 -
Going to try for 100km.7

I'm getting excited too! And a little nervous. This hiking and overnight camping is new to me but I'm jumping in with both feet!
For my work trip, I will be east of Dallas in Longview, Tx. Pretty close to the Louisiana state line.5 -
May 1 - 5.28 miles
Nice, cool 49F this morning when we ran at 5:00 am. I have a track club meeting after work this evening. I don't have time to go home in between work and the meeting so I brought my bicycle with me and convinced a friend to ride on the local greenbelt trail.6 -
Nice run @ContraryMaryMary . I usually stick to the route I have planned too, but I don't have many choices where I normally run.
Nice job on the 5K @pabmac !
Welcome @Juliexx00 !4
