Sounds like a tough day at the office @katharmonic but good work for getting it done.3

Well done in your race @katharmonic. I love the medal, it looks interesting. Completely different to the usual race medals.
Re: race being short. When I did my first marathon it was a trail/mountain marathon and I think it messed up my GPS as we were in and out of trees a lot (had a much cheaper GPS watch back then). The distance was shorter than the mileage markers. When I crossed the finish line I was 0.4 of a mile out so quickly picked up my medal and a bottle of water and carried on running. The race official was like "you can stop running now" I shouted back "no I can't I've got 0.4 miles to go, no way am I stopping short". As they say, 'if it ain't on Strava, it never happened' 😁8 -
Sounds like a tough race @katharmonic ! You did great, especially given the circumstances. I've been hot like that and it isn't fun. Nice bling too! I looked at the website to see where the race was, before I saw your description. The site said "We are planning on a single start for each race event but if we have to offer the events in "waves" again." Just wondering how the race actually started.
When I was looking up @katharmonic's race, I put "Thousand Island HM" into the search. Google wanted to know if I meant "Thousand Island homes?" Obviously, Google isn't a runner!4 -

Sunny, mid 60s F, and a tiny breeze from the southeast. Was tired again today and my hips were burning, too.
@katharmonic Amazing how some bling and swag can put a smile on one's face. Good race!!

Kind of feeling like garbage at the moment so a quick check-in today. Hope all are doing well!
Today started out pretty good. The scale gave me a surprising drop over the last week. I got ready for my run and was enjoying it. My cadence seemed up too (confirmed by Garmin). Cue the morning birds, sunrise, coyote, and the crane first flying one way, then flying back the other just a few minutes later with a gullet filled with something.
Then my HR started climbing a little after an hour in. It wasn't my monitor, I was feeling it too. I eventually realized I felt parched, but brought no water.
I decided to see how I could manage and be mindful of things. At 90 minutes in my watch switched to a 30 minute Z3 interval. I could get into Z3 easy at that point, but pushing over 3.5 was so hard I cut the run short by about 25 minutes.
Feeling human again after getting home and drinking a surprising amount of fluid. Hopefully back to normal tomorrow.

Congrats on the amazing progress @abowersgirl
That sounds like ireally tough conditions for a race @katharmonic! You deserve that medal even more just for pushing through!3 -
Thank you @scott6255, @WhatMeRunning, @ContraryMaryMary, @quilteryoyo, @Tramboman, @sweetdaisy13. It wasn't the worst I've raced in and many of you run in hotter temps all the time but I was definitely not adapted. Glad to be done with June in any case!
Official race times have not been posted which is very annoying. Or I should say only 1 person's time shows up (I assume the 1st place finisher) and anyone else you look up has blanks for times. I wonder if it's a glitch in posting or they somehow lost the timings altogether. I see some people posting on the facebook site asking about it and there is no response yet.
@quilteryoyo it was just one wave start. Everything seemed back to "normal".5 -
I'm joining in a little late, but I've been running since it has been over 40F. lol I think I will do a 50mi goal to start. I may try one of those virtual competitions later. I've done in-person half-marathons before, but I really don't like crowds much, so maybe a good fallback for me.

@abowersgirl - Take it slow and don't judge your progress by all of ours. Most all of us started out running short distances at slow(er) paces. You will get there with consistency - just celebrate you, getting out the door or on the treadmill, running a bit further or a bit longer. Over time you will just be amazed at the improvements and not pushing yourself to go further/faster will get you there without injury.
@katharmonic - great job finishing under difficult conditions! Love that song!
Also as our mentor @mobycarp would have explained courses are measured typically in the middle of the road or trail and most of us don't run right down the middle. Distances can often be off (+ or -) by a little or a lot depending on how we run the curves/tangents.
Here's a pretty good description (with diagrams!) explaining what happens.
@avidkeo - that article made me think of Kevin and wish there had been medical people there with him...
@polskagirl01 - that is quite a hike with a beautiful view at the end! I too thought the caption was for the picture above not below. I am glad you saw that 'cute little guy' though before you stepped on him.
@sweetdaisy13 - If you can carry the poles comfortably in your pack and you have trained with them a few times, I would take them. You don't have to use them if you don't need them, but if there is a section of the trail that is challenging it might be good to have them. I have used them when hiking (not for running) but I but if you use them it is likely you are in a section that is more hiking than running.
@ContraryMaryMary - hope you had a great time playing in the mud!
@quilteryoyo - great job on your 5mos post op run! Have fun at the birthday party and with your family visit!
@RunsOnEspresso - how are you doing with the big fire over your way? It was on all the news and papers here and looks like a mess and lots of smoke and ash in the air.
I am going to use @WhatMeRunning as an example to remind everyone as it gets hotter and/or more humid to be sure to take or have access to water or some type of hydration solution when you are out for a run. It doesn't take much to become dehydrated. Be safe everyone!
I went out for 8 yesterday but my dd called once we got to the trail so I walked about a mile while we talked. Then I went ahead with my run/walk intervals. Hobbes the Vizsla was getting overheated and we stopped a couple of times to get him some water and cool off a little. I also ran out on the dirt instead of on the main paved trail because the pavement seems to be hurting his paws even though it doesn't seem all that hot. Once we were back in our neighborhood he decided he needed to lie down in someones shady front lawn. It was mid 70's when we got home, so I think as it gets hotter I am just not going to be able to take him any longer which makes me very sad.

I ran 11 miles this morning. It was a pretty good run, but it was hot at the end. I really wanted to get up early to beat the heat, but I didn't get out the door until just after 8. I don't know why I can get up about 4:15 on weekdays and run at 5:15 or so, but on Sundays I can't seem to get up before 7. Most of my run was really good, but the last 3.5 - 4 miles were hard. I think because not only was it getting hotter, I was also in full sun for most of it.
I had one little dog run out at me. I hollered at him to go home and a man came to the door of the house and hollered for him to get back to the house. But he never came outside and then he just went inside and shut the door. I hope he was going get some shoes or a shirt, but I never saw him again. Luckily the dog was just a nuisance and didn't really seem aggressive.
@abowersgirl I love those runs where you enjoy it during the run!
@katharmonic Great job on your Half especially in the heat! Nice swag too! I love the medal.

@katharmonic Great job on a tough race. The heat sounds brutal!
Welcome @plzfeedmecookies. Off to a good start for the month!
@quilteryoyo Congrats on the 5 miles for 5 months!
@polskagirl01 Pretty pics. You can keep your cute little guy! There are so many snakes here this time of year. I'm ready for them to disappear into hiding again. I'm at the point where every stick is a snake and there are a lot of sticks.3 -
Welcome @plzfeedmecookies !
@WhatMeRunning Sounds like you were dehydrated. Glad getting the needed fluids made you feel better.
@shanaber Poor Hobbes. I know Tippy has never liked the heat and it seems to be a lot worse for her this year too. I did have to smile at the thought of him just laying down in the shade and refusing to move. Good job on your run.
Nice run @kgirlhart ! Glad the dog wasn't aggressive.
Nice running for not feeling it @Scott6255 ! Hope you feel better tomorrow.
Company is coming today. I'm hoping I can figure out how to get in some of my runs. I'll try to check in, but not sure how much commenting I'll be doing, so, hope you all have a great week.
I did get in my mile walk yesterday, in between church and leaving for my great nephew's birthday party. A few pictures under the spoiler.
The pool was cold, so I got to hold Shawn, wrapped in a towel, while watching others in the pool.
My great niece was there too. She is going to be a big sister come the 14th of this month.
Obligatory cake picture.

Went out for a couple of walks (4.3 and 3.5 miles) this weekend. With the weather being so gross, it is a nice break from running and struggling with the heat and humidity. My knee is actually feeling better, which is good news because we leave for our trip in a few days. I hope it stands up to all the hiking. I got my trekking poles in. I think they will help a lot on the big elevation hikes.
I need to vent for a sec about my 12 y/o. She is in the midst of a serious angsty phase and it is driving her dad and I crazy! In the last couple of weeks she has quit rock climbing team (which she seemed to be loving), mopes and complains every time we take a walk to the point where she will only walk way ahead of or behind us (never with us), and has informed us that she doesn't want to go on our family vacation. I know that this behavior isn't necessarily unusual for her age, but it is mentally exhausting! She is upset about something constantly. It is getting to the point where I find myself avoiding interactions with her because they are so unpleasant. Then I feel bad because she's my daughter and I love her even though she's infuriating right now, and I don't want her to feel like I'm mad at her or whatever. I told my husband/her dad that if she were a few years older I would probably have just said, fine stay home! The two of us would have a great time and it is stressing me out that her attitude may end up spoiling the experience for all of us.7 -
@quilteryoyo Such cute kids! Glad you got to enjoy some time with your family.1

Yes @martaindale that is a frustrating phase of an adolescent starting to come into their own. It will feel like an eternity, but as @Tramboman mentioned, when you look back it will feel like 5 minutes. It's very difficult, but just staying calm and showing her that you still love her despite all the negativity she is feeling / displaying will get you both through this. Stay strong!6
-
@martaindale hugs and hope that you'll all get through this phase quickly!
@katharmonic way to push through on your tough half marathon. Great job!
I ran about 9 km on one of my standard road routes this morning. I aimed for HM pace but ended up somewhat slower. The sun tried to kill me, which reminded me of @PastorVincent saying that. It wasn't even that hot - you Texans would've loved to run in this weather - but there were no clouds and it felt like the sun was aiming all of its rays directly at me and my little visor.
Got an email from my next race I'm signed up for, and figured out how they're doing a big race with limits of 250 participants still in place. They're doing separate wave starts with all kinds of safety measures, but don't have to count fully-vaccinated people in the 250 per wave. Makes sense now.

Hmm... so when I started this running training 3 weeks and 1 day ago I wanted to be able to run a 10k at 7:30min/km. The lowest pace Garmin would let me chose. My current any run pace was in the range of 8:30 to 8:40min/km then. Today I ran nearly 6km at 7:35. Looks like I'm heading in the right direction.14
