I like fartleks Also it's the name of the running club I've been with for the past few months.
Today I got a late start and decided to go to the forest to try to avoid the sun. It was still hot and muggy. 8k felt good, but I made myself stop with that because I'm still not feeling 100% (mostly my sinuses are still stuffed up).July Goal 100 miles (stretch goal 185k)
"40 weeks of 40K" - 28 Weeks DONE! / 16 weeks left to complete the challenge
Upcoming races:
August 1: Grywicka 10k (forest trail)
August 14: Bieg Zbóju 25km (mountain trail, 1400m elevation)10 -
July total: 14.5 miles
7/3: 3 miles
7/5: 2.7 miles
7/7: 3 miles
7/9: 2.6 miles
7/12: 3.2 miles
I accidentally skipped a day of posting. I’m still hovering around 3-ish miles a run just trying to get a little acclimated. I am feeling slightly better. It’s hard to say I feel good because the heat/humidity combo always sucks and I’m never going to feel good running in that weather. But I am working towards not hating every second of it.
I signed up for a race kind of spur of the moment. I happened to hear the wine & dine HM for November 2021 wasn’t sold out yet. As I started looking into it, everything just sort of fell into place. I was able to get a day off work, found a hotel, flights worked out. So, I signed up! These races are so much fun! The timeline is hard because it’s almost 2 months earlier than I am usually ready for a HM. So, I have to start training despite the oppressive heat.6 -
@katharmonic Sounds like an amazing weekend. Love the pictures and that you were able to make some new hiking friends.
@kgirlhart Yeah for such a nice run and seeing all of the hummingbirds. They are so fun to watch.
Happy Anniversary @Scott6255 ! Love how your run symbolized your marriage. Great job!
@Tramboman Hope your legs get with the program. They should be grateful, not complain.
@skippygirlsmom It just seems like there is no rhyme or reason.
@polskagirl01 That looks like a really nice place for a shady run. Hope you get back to 100% soon!
@martaindale Heat and humidity are hard to run in. I am hoping that training in these conditions will make my HM in the fall feel easier. Probably not, but I can hope.

I was scheduled to work at the daycare from 10:30 - 3:30 and had an appointment to get my car serviced at 4:00. I knew if I was going to get my run in, I needed to do it this morning. I got up and out the door at 7:40, about 30 minutes later than I had intended to last night. It worked out okay. I ran driveway laps.
Garmin said it was 72°F and 83% humidity (my thermometer showed 68°F). I tried really hard to keep my HR down. I figured I wouldn't be able to keep it in Zone 1, as the plan called for - which is below 128 bpm. So, my goal heading out was to keep it below 143. I actually managed to do that, except for one spot where my HR spiked...probably a Garmin glitch, so I was pleased. I did keep it in Zone 1 for the first 6 minutes.
Despite being soaked with sweat, it was a fairly easy run. I was so glad I made myself get out and get it done.7 -
@skippygirlsmom I had seen that they were selling those and it does look nice, but yes quite small for 12 big medals! I think I'll order something simpler/larger but thank you!3

I ran 5 miles this morning. It was another really pleasant morning for July. I didn't see as many hummingbirds today, but I did see a pretty pair of cardinals. And my friend the donkey. He was in his house when I ran by, but when he saw me he stopped and came out on the porch. Your name suggestions were really good @skippygirlsmom. I also was thinking maybe Sunshine or Sunny.
Your hike looks wonderful @katharmonic. And @polskagirl01 you have such pretty places to run.
Happy Anniversary @scott6255!
I know I am missing a lot, but I do read all the posts and give lots of likes and hugs.

@HonuNui - Happy Anniversary to you too! We were away and I haven't been checking in or posting so I am late.
Love all your pictures and the warm welcome for us to run ashore! Looking forward to a mai tai or 2 😁
I am hundreds of posts behind and will be reading thru to catch up. I did run a couple of times while we were gone but it was really really hot (103-107) the entire time. Will post an update later this week.3 -
I had a lovely run today. The weather was perfect - cold, clear and still - and the run was easy and comfortable. My pace was good, near the top of my aerobic zone, and heart rate pretty much stayed in the right zone, however Garmin tells me the run was unproductive 😂 Just goes to show how little a silly watch knows.

July 5: 4.51
July 7: 4.61
July 10: 4.94
July 14: 2.42

Feeling just about normal! I had planned on doing a regular run, but the baby woke up right as I was getting out of bed so I got her back down before I left, cutting my time a little short. Very humid though so maybe I won't complain about not having time to get in almost 5 miles.7 -
My Facebook memories reminded me that it was 2 years ago yesterday we lost Kevin. I think about him a lot and miss his stories, advice and friendship.
16 -
@kgirlhart So sweet that your donkey friend came out to say hi when he/she saw you. Yeah for another good run.
@Zoomie402 Glad your foot is doing better!
@penguinmama87 Glad you are feeling better. Nice run and yeah, I might not complain about not having enough time for a humid run.
@skippygirlsmom Has it really been two years? Doesn't seem like it. I miss his posts too. Hope all of his family are doing well.2 -

Partly cloudy, low 70s F, a touch less humid, nd a light southwest wind. Felt a little better today, but decided that 6 good ks were better than 5 good ks and 2 sloppy ks. My race plan for Saturday may be just one word -- survive.
I miss @MobyCarp, too.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!

Compared to recent weather, today was downright lovely! 71F and only 90% humidity at 7am. Man, my definition of nice weather is changing! It actually felt quite a bit cooler even with just a few degrees difference and it showed in my pace. I really did try not to push the pace and still ended up 30-60 secs/ mile faster. Basically, right at my usual easy pace, which I hadn’t even touched since summer really kicked in. I let myself sleep in just a little thinking I would only be going 3 miles. I wish I had gotten up at my normal time because I could have squeezed in 4 and had time to get ready for work. I ended up pushing it just a little and doing 3.5 miles. I may have to go to work with wet hair, but it was worth it for that extra little bit.
I can’t believe it has been 2 years since losing @MobyCarp ! I did my first HM that November during our memorial run for him. I miss his sense of humor and insights. He was endlessly supportive, just like all you nice people!8 -

@katharmonic I don’t blame you on the medal holder it is too small.
@quilteryoyo time has a way of going on doesn’t it? BTW I owe the state an apology, I received my check back in April ha ha I had it sent to my savings account for some reason so I didn’t see it duh
@Zoomie402 my friend used to teach Pound, she loved it.
@polskagirl01 that looks like a lovely place to run.
@martaindale where is the Wine and Dine HM, good for you for signing up. Summer training makes Fall goals! Or something like that ha ha
Happy Anniversary to @Scott6255 and @HonuNui
@kgirlhart I like Sunshine for a donkey, good name.
@ContraryMaryMary tell that Garmin to shut up

@martaindale I'm a HUGE run Disney fan! That's where I got my running start. I've done the Goofy and Dopey Challenge and also went Coast to Coast before they stopped Disneyland running. My sister and I are going to do Wine and Dine in 2022 and we are so excited for it. I can't wait to hear about your experience with it.
I didn't know @MobyCarp but he sounds like he was a great support for you guys.
@kgirlhart I love reading your donkey updates. They make me smile.
No run for me today or tomorrow. Gotta get through a double shift and then I finally have some solid time off.5 -

I have had limited time it seems, but have been reading, liking and hugging. Since fartleks are still a topic today, I'll quickly post my thoughts on that.
I much prefer the idea of running fartleks over intervals, but I often wonder if the whole method of fartleks provides me (or others) a slightly lesser impact than specified intervals@effort. Fartleks can be as tough as you make them, so it's on you to make them what they need to be. So I guess it's a love/hate relationship only in terms of that. Otherwise fartleks are great, and I usually feel amazing after them as they are the cure to monotonous training for sure.

It was 70F with 99% humidity for this morning’s 5:00 am run. It actually sprinkled on us during the run. After showering and getting ready for work it was steadily raining though so we dodged getting soaked by the rain - I was a sweaty mess anyway.
@katharmonic – Sounds and looks like a great hike! I love the ladder picture. After hiking more in the past year, I’ve really become appreciative of all the people who maintain and improve trails – mostly volunteers. Isn’t it interesting that you had one relationship end last week and now you have two new relationships (albeit they may not be quite the same type of relationships).
@pfeiferlindsey – No worries about the race report. Sometimes you just want to let it go! Even though it may not have turned out like you hoped, you have much to be proud of!
Happy Anniversary @Scott6255!
@skippygirlsmom – Thanks for the pic of Kevin. When I think of him I always picture him in his morning routine - running up and down the hall while waiting on his eggs to cook. I can’t believe it’s been 2 years already!
Hiking report below:We left at 5:00 am Sunday morning to drive down to the trail head in the Smoky Mountains. Our destination was Mt. Le Conte which is the third highest peak in the Smokies. I’ve hiked to Mt. Le Conte twice before on the Alum Cave trail. There are 5 trails that lead to the top and this time we decided to hike up on the Rainbow Falls trail. We started out around 7:20 am. Not sure what the temp was but it was humid. We passed Rainbow Falls after about 2.7 miles and stopped for a brief rest and snack since we had all ate breakfast around 4:00 am. We continued up to the top of the mountain for total mileage of 7.10 miles, 4410’ elevation gain in 5 hours, 18 minutes (time includes breaks). It was mostly sunny when we started but clouds moved in before we finished. It sprinkled rain on us about a mile from the top. As soon as we stopped, removed our backpacks, put the covers on them and got our rain jackets on, the rain stopped!
We checked into our cabin, changed clothes and sat in the rockers on the porch. Coffee, hot chocolate and lemonade are served from 2:00 – 5:00 pm. The dinner bell rings at 6:00 pm. Everyone is served the same meal (roast beef, mashed potatoes, green beans, apples, peaches, cornbread and chocolate chip cookie). The dining hall is still closed so the staff brings individual containers to each cabin. For an extra $12 you can have wine with your meal and we chose that option as we sat on the porch eating dinner and enjoying much laughter. Unfortunately, it was too cloudy and overcast to view the sunset. The cabins do not have running water or electricity. There are communal toilets that flush for the guests use and a cold water spigot and a hot water spigot that you can use to fill up your water bottles and the bucket and wash basin provided by the lodge for hygiene use. All food has to be removed from the cabins and placed in tin cans inside the dining hall by 9:00 pm to keep the mice and squirrels from visiting the cabins. We played cards by the kerosene lamp and were ready for bed by 9:30 (quiet time begins at 10:00 pm).
The same clouds along with some wind were still there when we got up on Monday morning so we didn’t get to view the sunrise either. Coffee is available from 7:30 – 8:00 and breakfast is served at 8:00 am. After we ate breakfast (pancakes, biscuit, Canadian bacon, scrambled eggs and grits), we started back down the mountain on the Trillium Gap trail around 9:00 am. This is the trail used by the llamas to bring supplies to and from the lodge. The llamas work on most Monday, Wednesday and Fridays so we were excited to meet them on the trail.
We made better time going down the mountain but we had to go further since our car was in the parking lot of another trailhead. We also took a short out and back detour on the Brushy Mountain Trail for some beautiful views. We passed Grotto Falls which is about half a mile from the Trillium Gap parking lot and it was really busy with people. Our total return mileage was 10 miles which we did in 5 hours 12 minutes.9
